No One Picked Up Life is Strange: Double Exposure GDC Award Because "We All Got Laid Off"Life is Strange: Double Exposure was a huge disappointment for its publisher Square Enix and the fans who played it. There are several reasons for its Mixed rating on Steam, and one of them is the bizarre decision of the company to send DMCA notices to players criticizing the absence of Chloe Price, the protagonist's love interest in the original game, on Reddit.Despite that, Double Exposure got the Social Impact Award at GDC 2025, which "advances equality, justice, intersectionality, and/or sustainability," but there was nobody to receive it. "I sit backstage at these gaming award shows, interviewing winners as they come through with their trophies. Nearly every game that won had people coming through, beaming with their trophy in hand. It stood out that, for Life is Strange, which won the Social Impact award, there was no one," said journalist Stephen Totilo. So what happened? The answer is quite tragic: the developers had been let go."It's fitting that nobody was there to accept the GDCA award that Double Exposure won, because we all got laid off lol (Don't be sad for me, I am very lucky and I work on BitLife now and I love it)," former Deck Nine narrative designer and writer Elizabeth Ballou shared (via PC Gamer.)Developer Deck Nine suffered two waves of layoffs last year, the most recent being in December due to "deteriorating market conditions in the gaming industry."The whole situation is a huge mess as Ballou said that "a bunch of us are at GDC, but we didn't know we were even nominated so nobody was prepared to accept anything".This sounds like Square Enix and Deck Nine completely gave up on the game and decided to forget about it as if it were a nightmare. I don't know what kind of miscommunication happened there, but hopefully, it won't happen again, as it's just awkward for everyone involved and draws even more attention to issues inside the company.

  • Traverse Research Introduces Evolve: The Next-Gen GPU Benchmark Suite
    cgshares.com
Unlike traditional, static benchmarks, Evolve is designed to grow alongside the industry, incorporating the latest advancements in rendering, compute performance, and efficiency testing. For example, modern ray tracing benchmarks use a formula that converts fps into a peak score but offer little further indication of what is truly happening under the hood. Evolve provides details such as per-pass visibility into the benchmarked passes, rather than just computing a single FPS-based score metric. This approach gives developers, hardware vendors, and consumers more nuanced and detailed context when making decisions. With the rapid evolution of GPU technology, a one-size-fits-all benchmark is no longer sufficient as the market has exploded with devices of different performance characteristics and form factors, all at different power envelopes and performance. This makes it more important than ever to give deep insights into whats going on exactly when measuring through a benchmark. Evolve addresses this challenge with a multifaceted approach, providing seven distinct performance scores:Energy Consumption Measuring power efficiency to optimize performance-per-watt.Ray Tracing Capabilities Evaluating real-time ray tracing performance.Rasterization Performance Assessing traditional rendering capabilities.Compute Performance Measuring general-purpose GPU computing strength.Driver Effectiveness Analyzing how effectively software leverages hardware.Acceleration Structure BuildWorkgraphs Performance (world-first evaluation)And as an industry-first, Evolve introduces workgraph performance evaluation, pioneering a new way to assess the next generation of GPU workloads.1 of 4Unlike conventional benchmarking tools that quickly become outdated, Evolve is designed to adapt. By incorporating emerging rendering techniques and maintaining compatibility across various GPU architectures, Traverse Research ensures that Evolve remains relevant for years to come. With Evolve, were not just testing hardwarewere creating a roadmap for the future of GPU performance, says Jasper Bekkers, CEO of Traverse Research. Our goal is to give developers, manufacturers, and enthusiasts the insights they need to make informed decisions in an ever-changing industry.Evolve is positioned as an essential tool for hardware manufacturers, journalists, developers, and consumers alike. Whether optimizing game engines, comparing GPUs, or fine-tuning rendering pipelines, Evolve delivers a detailed and actionable breakdown of GPU performance.1 of 9About Traverse ResearchFounded in 2019 in Breda, The Netherlands, Traverse Research started with a mission to establish the city as a hub for cutting-edge graphics and game development. From a small office with just three desks, the company has expanded into a powerhouse in the benchmarking space, working with industry giants like AMD, Intel, Qualcomm, ARM, Meta, and Samsung.Specializing in ray tracing, rasterization, and machine learning, Traverse Research has made key contributions to open-source projects and major industry events, including SIGGRAPH Asia and GDC. With a team of passionate engineers and researchers, the company remains committed to pushing the boundaries of GPU technology.1 of 2Evolve is now available for download. Battlestate Games hosted a limited-time event in the tactical FPS Escape from Tarkov recently, but a recurring issue has stopped PvE players from participating, and the community is making its voice heard on the matter. The Killa boss event was announced on Escape from Tarkovs Twitter page, setting the boss spawn rate to 100% for a limited time, and the event took place on March 23. However, several players missed out and were surprised the random event was active on a Sunday as well.
