  • NASA Astronauts Return, Seals Hold Their Breath Underwater, and Penguin Poop Panics Kril

March 23, 2025NASA Astronauts Finally Return, Seals Hold Their Breath, and Penguin Poop Stresses Out KrillIn this weeks news roundup, two NASA astronauts finally return to Earth after nine unexpected months in space, gray seals hold their breath for more than an hour, and penguin poop panics krill. Anaissa Ruiz Tejada/Scientific AmericanSUBSCRIBE TO Science QuicklyRachel Feltman: Happy Monday, listeners! For Scientific Americans Science Quickly, Im Rachel Feltman. Lets kick off the week by catching up on some science news you may have missed.Well start out with a space update that weve all been waiting about nine months for[CLIP: NASAs SpaceX Crew-9 Re-Entry and Splashdown: And splashdown Crew-9 is back on earth [cheering]]On supporting science journalismIf you're enjoying this article, consider supporting our award-winning journalism by subscribing. The two NASA astronauts, who were meant to spend about a week on the International Space Station but have been there since June, splashed down in a SpaceX capsule last Tuesday evening. Welcome home, Butch and Suni!If youre wondering why it took so long to bring them back after their arrival vehicles initial technical difficulties, the answer isnt very excitingit basically came down to scheduling issues. First, NASA had to bump two other astronauts off an upcoming mission so that their return vehicle would have room for Butch and Suni. Once that mission made it to the station, it had to stay put until the next mission came up to relieve the prior crew of their duties. Space is hard, as folks so often say, and multiple ISS missions are bound to mean multiple delays. In other space news, last week scientists unveiled images of a planetary system 130 light-years away snapped by the James Webb Space Telescope. In an exciting first, the JWST was able to directly capture images of carbon dioxide gas on an exoplanet. That means JWST lives up to its promise of sussing out the chemistry of planetary atmospheres from a distance. These observations suggest that the four planets of the system, known as HR 8799, were likely formed through a process called core accretion. That process starts with the gradual formation of solid cores, which go on to attract gas from inside a protoplanetary disk. Its the same way Saturn and Jupiter formed. At 30 million years old or so, HR 8799 is a baby compared to our roughly 4.6-billion-year-old solar system, so studying these alien worlds could give us a glimpse into what our own gas giants looked like in their early days. And speaking of early days, when it comes to JWST the best is still yet to come. The space telescope was designed to last for at least five years, but the hope is that it can make it more than 20.Now lets catch up with the Environmental Protection Agency. In last weeks news roundup, I outlined EPA head Lee Zeldins plans to undo heaps of environmental legislation. I also mentioned his purported plan to cut 65 percent of the agencys costs. Last week, thanks to documents reviewed by Democrats on the House Committee on Science, Space and Technology, we got a clearer picture of those prospective cost-cutting measures. The New York Times reported last Monday that the EPAs plan calls for firing up to 1,155 scientists, as well as getting rid of the Office of Research and Development. This is the EPAs main science arm, which conducts research on environmental issues such as pollutants and their effects on humans. Zeldin said in a Fox Business appearance on Tuesday that the EPA was still working through cost-cutting decisions. Also on Tuesday, Representatives Valerie Foushee, Deborah Ross and Zoe Lofgren, who are all members of the House Science, Space and Technology Committee, put out a joint statement condemning the supposed plans. They argued that, considering the EPAs obligation to use the best-available science in making its decisions, eliminating its main science branch would be illegal. If you like having clean air and water, you might consider calling up your own congressional reps to ask them to take a stand too.Meanwhile last week President Donald Trump posted on Truth Social, a platform he owns, that he was authorizing his administration to immediately begin producing energy with BEAUTIFUL, CLEAN COAL.Clean coal is a nebulous term referring to technologies that make coal less polluting than it would be without those technologies. But theres no way of handling coal that makes it a clean form of energy. There are a few facilities that now use carbon capture technology to mitigate coals impact on the environment, but this technology is expensive and lemme be very clear about this it doesnt turn coal into a zero-carbon energy option. Coal is the most polluting source of energy. It releases heaps of carbon dioxide, contributes to environmental issues like acid rain and smog, and can cause lung disease. On Truth Social, President Trump claimed that Environmental Extremists and Thugs had allowed other countries, particularly China, to gain economic advantages over the U.S. by opening new coal plants. While its true that China has opened new coal plants in recent years, its worth noting that the countrys percentage of electricity generated from coal is actually on the decline. Its also worth noting that last Wednesday the World Meteorological Organization reported that atmospheric carbon dioxide levels are at an 800,000-year high. So yeah, consider calling your reps! For no particular reason, I could use a little bit of a breather. Lets just talk about animals for the rest of the episode.First, have you ever wondered how seals avoid drowning? You totally should wonder that cause gray seals, for instance, can hold their breath for more than an hour at a time. A study published last Thursday in Science could help explain how. It turns out that gray seals can seemingly sense how much oxygen is in their blood at any given moment.Like most mammals, humans dont necessarily react to a lack of oxygen in the air. Were much more sensitive to an uptick in our carbon dioxide levels, which prompts us to breathe more. If a gray seal started to get that panicky air-hunger feeling as soon as the saturation of CO2 in their blood started going up while they were holding their breath, theyd never get anything done. But it seems theyve got a trick for that: just cutting out the middleman and sensing oxygen directly.Scientists tested this by giving seals air with different levels of oxygen and carbon dioxide before the animals went for their dives. The researchers found that seals would dive for longer after inhaling more oxygen-rich air and would cut their dives short after getting less oxygen. When the seals inhaled air with high levels of carbon dioxide, it didnt really change their dive length. While this study looked at gray seals, theyre not even the most accomplished divers in the seal world. The northern elephant seal can dive for up to two hours at a time. Its even possible that this oxygen-sensing trait came from a fairly distant ancestor that is applies to more than just mammals. After all, the emperor penguin can stay underwater for up to 27 minutes. And speaking of penguins it turns out their poop causes a big ruckus among zooplankton world. In a study published last Thursday in the journal Frontiers in Marine Science, researchers zoomed in on the behavior of Antarctic krill. These tiny, shrimplike creatures are crucial members of the food chain, so they spend a lot of their time trying not to get eaten. Scientists already knew that krill used their sense of smell to react to things like food and pollution, so naturally they thought, Why not try penguin poo? Sure enough, when exposed to seawater containing guano in a tank, the little critters swam faster, pivoted direction more, and ate less algae. You might be asking yourself why scientists are interested in this crap. Like literally specifically this crap. But between krills spot on the food chain and their ability to sequester carbon by eating algae, these little guys can have a big impact on the ocean. Krill are already changing their behaviors due to climate change, sea ice loss and ocean acidification by moving further south. And if you need a pick-me-up this week, just take a moment to be grateful you arent on penguin doody duty: researchers had to collect a couple ounces of the stuff for the study, and apparently it smells like rotten shellfish.Thats all for this weeks news roundup. Well be back on Wednesday to talk about the changing science of invasive plants. And stay tuned for a very special video episode on Friday. Were giving you a tour of the cutting-edge lab where MIT [Massachusetts Institute of Technology] scientists study and fabricate stuff at the nanoscale.Science Quickly is produced by me, Rachel Feltman, along with Fonda Mwangi, Kelso Harper, Naeem Amarsy and Jeff DelViscio. Assassin's Creed Shadows team thanks fans for "heartwarming" response as game launches to Very Positive Steam rating"This is just the beginning for Shadows."Image credit: Ubisoft News by Tom Phillips Editor-in-Chief Published on March 24, 2025 A message posted by the Assassin's Creed Shadows development team has thanked fans of the franchise for "the sheer amount of love and positivity" received since the game's long-awaited launch last week, which, the team said, had been "incredibly heartwarming".Assassin's Creed Shadows had a particularly rocky road to release, beset by delays and numerous online controversies, and an uncertain future for publisher Ubisoft in general. But, four days and two million players later - the end result appears to be a game the Assassin's Creed fanbase has taken to warmly, with numerous positive threads on the Assassin's Creed reddit, and a Very Positive user rating on Steam from those who have played.Eurogamer's Assassin's Creed Shadows review in video form.Watch on YouTube"This weekend, many of us on the Dev Team spent time reading your reactions across the Assassin's Creed subreddit - and we just want to say thank you," a message from the Ubisoft Quebec development team stated. "The sheer amount of love and positivity we've received has been incredibly heartwarming."The team's message comes in response to a popular thread on the Assassin's Creed subreddit over the weekend with over 2.3k upvotes, sending thanks to the Shadows team for a job well done, with particular praise for the game's visuals, combat and exploration mechanics."We came across this post in particular," the team continued, referencing that fan thread, "and it really moved us. Seeing your excitement, your thoughtful reactions, and your joy has meant the world to us. After years of hard work, there's nothing more rewarding than watching the community connect with what we've created."While we don't reply directly, please know we're listening. The entire Dev Team has been reading your posts - the celebrations, the feedback, the theories - and it's been inspiring. It fuels us. And it helps us keep improving."The Assassin's Creed Shadows team closed with a nod to the future, and the game continuing to change and grow over the coming months through future patches and expansions - the first of which comes free to anyone who pre-ordered the game."Thank you for being part of this journey with us. This is just the beginning for Shadows, and we're thrilled to see the game evolve with you by our side."'Where other men blindly follow the truth, remember... nothing is true.'""Majestic in scope, impressive in detail, Ubisoft's epic adventure honours the beauty of feudal Japan, even if its strongest moments are saved for the personal stories of its two protagonists," I wrote in Eurogamer's Assassin's Creed Shadows review.

Check out how we test and review games hereOnlyFangs, a Hardcore World of Warcraft guild forged by popular livestreamer SodaPoppin, has disbanded after days of targeted DDoS attacks on Blizzards servers. Since the start of a recent event, the WoW Classic guild has been hyper-targeted with hackers bringing down servers during raids to spoil their games. With the Hardcore guilds raids ruined by DDoS server outages, every event the guild has ran over the last week has resulted in countless deaths. As a hardcore run, death means death, those characters are gone, and the guilds massive losses as a result of the attacks have caused many to feel massive anxiety when playing.World of Warcraft OnlyFangs Guild set to disbandIn an announcement on Discord, Guild Leader SodaPoppin announced that the World of Warcraft guild is on its last legs. While the leader has reached out to developer Blizzard to revert character deaths caused by the rampant server attacks, recent events mean that the guild will likely end.So, clearly the DDoS attacks are centered on us, the Guild Leader explained. Ive reached out for potential rollback, but its highly unlikely and I wouldnt hope for it. So many of us died, but we still have people that can play, regardless, though I dont feel comfortable dragging people through getting world buffs, flasks and consumables just to raid with the anxiety and the actuality of being DDoSd again and dying. In the announcement, they claimed the OnlyFangs guild is over if Blizzard doesnt rollback players to get their characters again. With DDoS attacks occurring every time the guild attempts to fight a major raid in the Hardcore WoW server, its clear that wrongdoing is at play, but that doesnt mean Blizzard will revive deceased characters. Its a terrible ending imo, but thats the ending we got, the streamer continued. On a positive note, the beginning of OnlyFangs was so long ago, I think a lot of us forgot how awesome the entire event was, and I wanted to thank all of you for being a part of it.For more WoW coverage, read about the creation of the D.R.I.V.E. system from the new Undermine update, or read about how Ashbringer may actually be coming to World of Warcraft Classic after 20 years.World of Warcraft ClassicPlatform(s):PCGenre(s):Massively Multiplayer, Massively Multiplayer Online, RPGSubscribe to our newsletters!By subscribing, you agree to our Privacy Policy and may receive occasional deal communications; you can unsubscribe anytime.Share

  • Fallout 76 devs had to fight Bethesda to create its huge map as they didnt want it bigger than Skyrim

Rest assured, all imagery and advice is unique and original. Check out how we test and review games hereUpon release, Bethesda Game Studios Fallout 76 was a bit of a mess. While the games story was lacking and it will chock-full of bugs, fans fell in love with its expansive map that excels in environmental storytelling. However, early in development, Bethesda didnt want to invest in a massive map for the first Fallout MMO. Eventually, the team was given the go ahead to make a map four times bigger than Fallout 4, but that wasnt alwaysFallout 76 almost had a smaller mapSpeaking at the 2025 Games Developer Conference, via GamesRadar, Fallout 76 lead artist Nate Purkeypile explained that they had to personally fight for the map to be bigger than Skyrim. In an attempt to create the epic scope of the Virginian wilderness, the artist had to battle to create the map they wanted.Fallout 76s map was huge; its actually even bigger than Skyrim, and that was something I had to fight for really hard from the start, the artist said. I knew it was a game people were going to be spending a lot of time in, and I wanted to capture that epic feel of the West Virginia wilderness.Despite the games poor launch shooting harsh criticisms towards individual developers, years of updates has massively improved Fallout 76. However, Purkeypile explains that he still received compliments for the games brilliant map even when everyone was complaining about everything else about the game.Even though the game had a rocky launch, people liked the map, they said. It was kind of nice to hear hey, that game sucks, but the maps pretty cool. I did my job.Since its release in 2018, Bethesda has continued to update Fallout 76 with massive expansions and brand-new features. • Tour a Familys Historic Chevy Chase Home With a Colorful Redesign
    www.architecturaldigest.com
Following an extensive review by the local historic preservation boardwhose regulations forbid any changes to the homes facade to ensure it retains its original early 20th-century appearancethe house was stripped down to its foundation and Farmer set to work. In a historic house, you need to be mindful of putting the patina back into some of the hard surfaces, explains the designer. You have to consider how, and where, to go about thatasking questions like, Is it reclaimed? Or, is it something thats new, but will look old? Otherwise, it gives the wrong impression of just being done all at once without care. And so Farmer and her team rebuilt the framework to reflect its original era by installing period-appropriate mouldings, sourcing fireplaces, adding tile, and laying flooring that would honor its heritage while still remaining modern. To pull off a convincing interior rebuild of this nature, a strong sense of trust was built between Tullumello and the designer, which allowed Farmer to guide her in taking risks she might otherwise avoidespecially when it came to color. We wanted a bright, cheerful home. And Nina understood that, Tullumello says, praising the designers ability to handle saturation with a strong sense of elegance. And so Farmer dressed the home in rich jewel tones: glossed olive walls in Drews office; saffron yellow trim in the dining room; rusted auburn fabric on a living room sofa; cerulean blue tiles along their sons bathroom. I like complex colors and unexpected combinations, and Jenn didnt shy away from that, explains Farmer of their collaboration. She was game for anything. The homes unconventional floor plan made designing the asymmetrically thin, elongated living room a challenge, but Nina Farmer Interiors made clever use of a corner, placing a custom sofa in Russet velvet by Holland & Sherry and a Brighton coffee table by The Lacquer Company beneath built-in bookshelves for a quiet moment of reading or contemplation. I felt like she really understood how to manage the quirkier parts of the historic house in such a way that the flow of our entertaining space is immaculate, shares Tullumello. While Tullumello placed her full trust in Farmer, she was admittedly a touch hesitant initially about the deep hues, worrying it might make the house too dark. As the project went on and she was able to be in the house at different times of the day, and experience how the scale of the spaces and layouts create quite a light atmosphere, she let us run with color, says Farmer. While the preservation board stipulated that the front needed to remain unchanged, there was a bit of room to play in the back of the house with a more contemporary addition that lends an indoor-outdoor element. Vintage pillows from Central Asia rest on a Roman Thomas sofa, which is surrounded by a daybed dressed in Atohi 16007 fabric by Design of the Times as well as chairs in linen striped Jasper Jaipur fabric. The stone and metal vintage side table is from Obsolete, and the pendants RW Guild.Farmer called upon an eclectic melange of periods and styles to build out the home. We wanted to find a mix of interesting magic of pieces that juxtaposed against the architecture of the house; to create a tension between pieces that one might not expect to see together.

  • Visiting Jake Gyllenhaal in His Othello Dressing Room
    www.architecturaldigest.com
First there was method acting (sometimes it wins you an Emmy, sometimes it bristles your costars, sometimes it does both). Then a novel phenomenon called method dressing took red carpets by storm (remember Zendayas perfectly executed tennis-themed looks for her Challengers press tour?) Next up: The method dressing room.Othello star Jake Gyllenhaals backstage home-away-from-home in Broadways Barrymore theater is an extension of the Shakespearean world hes been steeped in while developing his version of Iago, the duplicitous ensign to the titular Venetian army general played by Denzel Washington. The revival is a modern take on The Bards centuries-old tragedy with relatively spare set design, so Gyllenhaals dressing room presented an opportunity to bring the narrative to life with more evocative decor.A rug and drapery by Nordic knots soften the dressing rooms chess table vignette.Photo: Gieves AndersonA Wretched Flowers lamp swathed in anodized stainless-steel chainmail commands attention on the vanity table; Brentwood barrel armchairs by Josef Hoffman for J & J Kohn; Ginori coffee cups from the brands Oriente Italiano collection. Two pieces by London-based artist Joel Tomlin were selected for the touch of charming, domestic, homey familiarity they introduced to the room, says Atelier LK designer Ruby Kean.Photo: Gieves AndersonI was told that its the dressing room that Marlon Brando was in for A Streetcar Named Desire. It has hundreds of layers of paint from every performer that has had or shared that room, and so it holds within it a deep, rich history that I am honored to be a part of and to add to, even if its temporary, Gyllenhaal tells AD. The BAFTA winner has a soft spot for design, evidenced by his role as an ambassador for the luxury Italian porcelain purveyor Ginori 1735, so, naturally, he was inclined toward an elevated approach for the short-term dwelling. To make the most of his time in such hallowed quarters, Gyllenhaal brought in designers Ruby Kean and Lisa Jones of Atelier LK, a firm operating out of New York and London. Kean says the trio agreed upon a vision for the room that was narrative-driven, but also something that would be very comfortable for him that he could really retreat into, given the demanding, high-pressure environment of a Broadway production. Another consensus was highlighting local creatives with their decorative choices. Gyllenhaals love for artisan craftsmanship, as well as emerging designers in New York, was quite a key thing for Ruby and I to explore, Jones says.A spiky Crown of Thorns lamp by Wretched Flowers creates an intriguing contrast beside delicate blooms in a Sophie Lou Jacobsen vase. I would never claim to try and be a dramaturge here, but I do think the materials that [Jones and Kean] pickedboth soft and tough, the danger, and the comfortall these juxtapositions are very, very right for the themes of Othello, Gyllenhaal says.Photo: Gieves AndersonA handmade chess set by NYC-based designer Minjae Kim serves as a stylish callout to the calculated gameplay characteristic of Iago, whose plotline is defined by his meticulous orchestration of Othellos downfall. Pulled up to the board are a pair of chairs also by Kimone light, one darkthat echo the aesthetic of the chessboard itself while aligning with the themes of racial dichotomy underpinning the tale.I would never claim to try and be a dramaturge here, but I do think the materials that they pickedboth soft and tough, the danger, and the comfortall these juxtapositions are very, very right for the themes of Othello.Jake GyllenhaalSubtlety, though, was key. Kean explains the team was cognizant of staying grounded and mindful about capturing the world of Othello in a way that didnt feel too overly literal. Accessories woven throughout the dressing room reference the play in a more understated manner, but conjuring the appropriately dark and dramatic vibe to match Othello led to an emphasis on sourcing the right lighting. Two ochre sconces of Venetian Murano glass (made by New York designer Dana Arbib), Sophie Lou Jacobsens Tulipa pendant in a moody tobacco shade, and a prickly Crown of Thorns lamp by Wretched Flowers offer Gyllenhaal the ability to be flexible with the lighting, per Kean. Its warm yet elegant. Its comforting, but it has a sense of formality to it, and I love that theyve really tried to make it feel like the spaces Ive been to in Venice, Gyllenhaal says of the sultry lighting.Gyllenhaal and the Atelier LK team relished the opportunity to take on the dressing room project, but at the end of the day its a utilitarian space. The actors absolute must-haves? A place to change, a place to sleep, and a place to make coffeethose are my requirements. Glass candlesticks from Dana Arbib; floating shelf by Atelier LK.Photo: Gieves AndersonThe more nuanced nods to the Italian locale in which the play opens are balanced with a statement-making, theatrical approach to the rooms walls, which set the scene via Rafa Prieto x Wallpaper Projects photographs of Venice blown up large. The dressing room is a very small and intimate space, and we really wanted it to take on the charm and romanticism of the play, Kean says. Two immersive images taken in the city lend themselves to distinctively separate moods in their respective vignettes. A shot of a salmon-hued faade along Salizada dei Spechieri tonally encourages people to gather, feel energized, to learn linesmaking more of an uplifting, lighter space, Jones says. A more low-key ambiance takes shape in the rooms back area. Jones explains that a wall wrapped in the image of a caf table with a dim, low-down view of the canal was chosen with the intent of helping Gyllenhaal unwind, relax, take a moment to rest, and to feel a little bit more like a downtime space.Atop a carved-leg side table by Soren Ferguson sits a bowl of figs, another Othello easter egg that nods to an Act I line from Iago. (Virtue? A fig!) Curtain tassel by Jessica Light; fiberglass and wood floor lamp by Minjae Kim.Photo: Gieves AndersonOf course, there hasnt been much downtime of late. Denzels made his way up there a couple of times, but just through the nature of him being the general, I tend to go to his room. The rest of the cast comes in and out. At this point, were all so focused. Its quite a piece to try and do service to, so were all onstage all the time rehearsing when were not in the play, Gyllenhaal says. When time comes and were in our run and we get to come in at 5:00 or 6:00 for an 8:00 p.m. show, I hope well hang out there a lot more.Othello starring Denzel Washington and Jake Gyllenhaal officially opened March 23 at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre and runs through June 8.

  • Exclusive: 'Misc. A Tiny Tale' Gameplay - Check Out Switch Footage Of This Cosy Chibi-Robo-Like
    www.nintendolife.com
Subscribe to Nintendo Life on YouTube799kMisc. A Tiny Tale is scheduled to launch Switch later this year, and today we've got an exclusive look at a trailer showcasing the game running specifically on Nintendo's console.Coming from three-person indie developer Tinyware Games, the video above features project lead Michael Pearce showcasing this Chibi-Robo-eque 3D platformer with footage captured on Switch (it's also coming to PC). Showing various characters and areas, the demo gives us a good idea of how Misc. is shaping up on Nintendo's console. If you haven't been keeping up with this one, Misc. has you playing as Buddy and Bag Boy, a pair of mini robots who head out to collect all manner of everyday doohickeys nuts, bolts, coins, clutter, and outright rubbish in classic collectathon style. Improving the world and recycling waste is a big theme of this one, and it's all looking very pleasant indeed. The video looks at two areas, one from early on and a later stage, Melodic Meadow, which (predictably) adds a spot of musicality to the platform-y proceedings. We'll admit to being a little cosy-ed out there's no shortage of wholesome, cosy games right now! but we're still rather taken with this and the vibes it's channelling.Images: Tinyware GamesWe're suckers for everyday worlds seen from a different perspective, whether it's Pikmin or The Plucky Squire or the most obvious inspiration for Tinyware's game, Skip Ltd's Chibi-Robo series, which turns 20 in June.Former Skip devs are also working on an (unrelated) project with heavy Chibi-Robo vibes, although they're keen to distance koROBO from that series despite the obvious comparisons. So it seems Chibi-Robo fans have plenty to be looking forward to in the near-ish future. It's been a long time coming (the game was originally announced way back in 2021), but we're still excited to see how this particular pint-sized platformer measures up and it's great to get a good look at the Switch version specifically. There's no word on a Misc. A Tiny Tale release date just yet, but take a look at the video at the top of the page and let us know below if you plan on clearing up with Buddy sometime later in 2025.
