  • One of the most atrocious games ever published is coming to Steam, and its not a joke
    www.polygon.com
Big Rigs: Over the Road Racing, widely regarded as one of the worst video games ever commercially released, is getting a 2025 release on Steam and the exhumation of this 2003 disaster does not appear to be a joke, some sort of meta-commentary, or a stealth psychological horror game disguising itself as Big Rigs.Instead, publisher Margarite Entertainment appears to be of the opinion that the oft-mocked Big Rigs is a classic trucking game and that its release on Steam in the coming months will mark its triumphant return. A news release from Margarite Entertainment effectively touts the same inaccurate promises that Big Rigs box art made more than 20 years ago, which the final, barely-playable game certainly did not live up to.Big Rigs: Over the Road Racing was developed by Stellar Stone which outsourced the games development to Ukraine and originally released by GameMill Publishing. In its original state, the game was an unmitigated disaster. The games AI-controlled truck that you were supposed to race against didnt move at all. The games physics and collision detection were virtually non-existent, meaning you could drive your rig up the side of mountains and through buildings. Even the games acceleration was completely busted; players could move in reverse at speeds of up to 2 million miles per hour. The game is also infamous for its congratulatory message YOURE WINNER ! when completing a course. A patch released for Big Rigs addressed some of the games glaring issues, including some of its broken English, but even then, many of the features promised on the games original box (and now in Margarite Entertainments announcement) were never part of the game. That includes stay[ing] one step ahead of the law and hauling loads yes, two of the games four drivable trucks have trailers, but the contents of those haulers are not visible nor are players aware of their contents. You might consider them Schrdingers load.Big Rigs: Over the Road Racing has long been a well-deserved punching bag for critics and content creators for decades. GameSpot famously scored the game a 1 out of 10 in reviewer Alex Navarros 2003 assessment, which was paired with a funny video of Navarro suffering through the barely functioning game. Similar popular takedowns from the Angry Video Game Nerd and Cr1TiKaL have echoed just how bad Big Rigs is. At this years Awesome Games Done Quick speedrunning charity event, runner szcymanski completed all five tracks in 3 minutes, 29 seconds, a feat pulled off completely in reverse to showcase the games brokenness. Its still unclear if publisher Margarite Entertainment truly knows what it has on its hands. Margarite Entertainments website says that the companys mission is acquiring and licensing classic games and that it is eager to present these exceptional games to an emerging audience. Thus far, the only game the publisher has announced it has rights to is Big Rigs: Over the Road Racing. (Margarite appears to be based in China, going by the companys domain registration and investment from Hong Kong-based ACG Plus Capital.)Time will soon tell what the 2025 release of Big Rigs: Over the Road Racing will play like. But given the games infamous quality, dont expect much more than a fresh batch of memes and comedic playthroughs.

  • Im Obsessed With Grilling Shrimp on My Waffle Iron
    lifehacker.com
We may earn a commission from links on this page. For lean protein thats tasty, low fat, and affordable, you can't go wrong with shrimp, especially if you buy frozen. I like to do just that, and stretch it out over many meals. I think we can all agree that when youre eating a lot of one particular thing, the best way to keep things interesting is to try new recipes and to find different cooking methods for it. And my latest shrimp obsession is to grill it using my waffle iron. Why waffled shrimp worksThe waffle iron is one of the most versatile appliances in your kitchenit's good for so much more than making waffles. The benefits of using a waffle maker to cook your wee sea bugs is four-fold: speed, ease, space, and a dry cook (which compares to grilling). When I waffle my shrimp, I always start with a cleaner counter space; as the prep is all done beforehand, and my particular waffle maker is not very large, I need some room to have all my skewers ready to go. Then its just a matter of switching out the skewers of shrimp in the appliance; once cooked, theyre ready to snack on or lay across a pile of rice. The "dry cook" is the biggest selling point for me. I love shrimp, but I don't always love eating wet shrimp, and the waffle iron remedies this. (Im a sometimes seafood lover, so I can get easily grossed out by too much ocean; my fiance historically makes too much saucy shrimp, so Ill switch to waffling when Im in charge of dinner.) Similarly to grilling, where you have grates, the divots and grooves of the waffle press allow the excess juices to drain away from the meat. (This is also why you should waffle some meat.) That, coupled with the high heat of the waffle plates, means you can quickly concentrate the flavor without much moisture collecting around the seafood. Credit: Allie Chanthorn Reinmann How to waffle your shrimp1. Thaw the shrimpWaffling your shrimp is especially good if youre in the mood for a quick shrimp snack. Since the waffle iron cooks from both sides simultaneously, my medium shrimp finished cooking in three minutes. If you have frozen shrimp or youre marinating it, thaw them in the fridge overnight and give them a seasoning dry rub in the morning so youll be ready to waffle them just before eating.2. MarinateA good marinade can be nearly any seasoning mix, spice blend, or even salad dressing. As I mentioned, I prefer dry but flavorful shrimp, so after thawing Ill pat them dry with paper towel and add them to a bowl with dry seasonings like old bay, cayenne pepper powder, a curry powder mix, and salt. Then Ill drizzle on a teaspoon or so of cooking oil. This makes it easier to coat the shrimp with the seasonings but also prevents them from sticking to the iron.3. Skewer Credit: Allie Chanthorn Reinmann You dont need to skewer the shrimp, but I like to because its so much easier to remove them from the waffle maker and switch in the next batch. Also, you must consider how fun it is to eat shrimp straight off the skewer. Use bamboo skewers and poke through the centers of the shrimpthey don't need soaking or any special treatment. You can skewer as many as will fit, but dont add more than the length or width of your waffle iron.4. WaffleMy waffle iron only has an on-off toggle, but if you have temperature controls, then put them up to the highest setting. Shrimp cook easily, and large or medium shrimp will cook through in three to four minutes. When your iron is fully preheated, lay down as many skewers as you can fit with about a half-inch of space between them. Press the lid down and keep some pressure on it for the first minute or so. Peek in the side to see if theyre looking opaque after three minutes, and remove them if so. Swap in the next skewers. If you dont have a waffle iron already or youre looking to buy a new one, I highly recommend one that has removable plates for easier cleaning. Its such a relief to let the waffle iron cool down while I eat my snack shrimp, then come back and pop out the plates; the appliance goes into its storage spot and I take care of plates with the rest of the dishes. Cuisinart 2-in-1 Waffle Maker with Removable Plates, WAF-RP10NAS $79.99 at Amazon Shop Now Shop Now $79.99 at Amazon While your waffled shrimp may not have the grill marks or the smoky flavor of actual grilled shrimp (perhaps you can add some smoked paprika?), heating up the waffle iron is a lot easier than firing up a real grill. Plus, if you live in an apartment (like I do), or you simply dont have a grill, this waffle-griddled shrimp gives you lots of flavor and a lot less mess.

  • My Favorite Amazon Deal of the Day: This Merach Rowing Machine
    lifehacker.com
We may earn a commission from links on this page. Deal pricing and availability subject to change after time of publication.A rowing machine can be a great workout option for people looking to target multiple major muscle groups at once (legs, back, core, and arms) while getting their cardio going at the same time. If you're looking for a rowing machine that's light, portable, and quiet, the Q1S Merach is worth checking out. Right now, Merach's Magnetic Rowing Machine is on sale for $179.99 (originally $299.99), a 40% discount. This is the machine's lowest price ever, according to price-checking tools. Brand:MERACH, Resistance: Adjustable, Resistance Mechanism: Magnetic Merach Rowing Machine- Magnetic (Brown) $179.99 at Amazon $299.99 Save $120.00 Get Deal Get Deal $179.99 at Amazon $299.99 Save $120.00 SEE -2 MORE As I said in my review, this machine is practical, silent, and affordable even before the current discount. I really like the ability to prop it up against the wall and keep it from taking up too much space in my dining room. The machine is also silent enough that I can get workouts done while watching TV and without annoying my partner. The Merach app is a great companion for the rowing machine, with different workouts, tracking metrics, optional classes, and other paid options to unlock. The screen itself is disappointing, but you can very easily use your phone's screen and prop it in front of you to get a much better idea of what you're doing. Where this machine might fall short for some people is in its size. I'm 5'7", and I feel that the handlebars sit very low to the ground and don't come out far enough at the start of the drive, giving me that cramped, small rowboat feel. To get any tension on my arms at the beginning of the stroke, I have to lean backwhich isn't good form. If you're just trying to get a workout in, though, it likely won't bother you.

  • Google Drive is now available on Snapdragon-based Windows PCs
    www.engadget.com
Theres now a native version of Google Drive for Arm-powered PCs, like those featuring last years Snapdragon X Elite and X Plus chips. The company announced this feature update in a blog post, saying that the Drive app for Windows is "generally available" for Snapdragon X chipsets. Todays release follows a beta test going back to last year. This includes machines by several big brands, with the most notable being the newest Microsoft Surface laptops. The Drive port for Arm-based PCs also allows users to access their accounts through the Windows File Explorer app. This should make it easier to pull files from Drive accounts. The native app only works on devices running Windows 11 and Microsoft WebView2. Existing beta users will automatically be updated to the full version. Its rolling out today but could take up to 15 days to hit everyones accounts. The new app is available for all Google Workspace customers, Workspace Individual Subscribers and users with personal Google accounts. This article originally appeared on Engadget at https://www.engadget.com/computing/google-drive-is-now-available-on-snapdragon-based-windows-pcs-173517153.html?src=rss

  • The Blink Mini 2 security camera is only $20 for the Amazon Spring Sale
    www.engadget.com
You can save on some of our top picks for the best security cameras as part of a sale on Blink gear thanks to the Amazon Spring Sale. For instance, the Blink Mini 2 is available for $20, which is half off the list price. It matches a record low. A two-pack of the Blink Mini 2 is down to $38 as well. That's not quite a record low, but you'll still save $22 due to the 46 percent percent discount. We reckon the Blink Mini 2 is the best budget security camera around. You can adjust the webcam-style camera to a variety of angles. It's weather-resistant, so you can place it outside if you have a special power adapter. The camera picks up decent (but not great) images, particularly those captured in the infrared nighttime view. It also has a built-in LED spotlight. Since Blink is an Amazon company, of course the Mini 2 ties into the Alexa ecosystem. You'll just need to have a Blink account before you can actually use it. As you might expect, you'll be able to view images captured by the Mini 2 via the Alexa app on an Echo Show, Fire Tablet or Fire TV but, curiously, not iOS or Android. To see the captures on your phone or tablet, you'll instead need to use the Blink app. You'll get some extra features such as cloud storage and people and pet detection if you sign up for the Blink Subscription ($3 per month for one camera, $10 per month for any number). Elsewhere in the sale, a five-pack of the Blink Outdoor 4 cameras is half off at $200. This is our recommendation for the best security camera for Alexa users. Having five of them should be enough for many folks to keep an eye on everything that's going on around their property. • How to cautiously use health advice from social media
    www.fastcompany.com
In the corners of social media dominated by wellness content, influencers recommend an assortment of treatments and products to support weight loss, fight exhaustion, or promote other desired health outcomes. Some of the endorsed approaches may be helpful. Many play into fads with scant evidence to back up enthusiasts claims, medical experts say. Some influencers encourage their followers to avoid specific food items, such as seed oils, while others advocate going all in on certain foods, such as the meat-heavy carnivore diet. There are video pitches for berberine, a chemical compound thats been touted online as natures Ozempic, and for nonmedical IV vitamin therapy, which businesses popularly known as drip bars market as cures for hangovers or fatigue. To be sure, alternative health practices and cures that lacked the medical establishments backing were a part of popular culture long before the internet age. But the plethora of advice shared online has both prompted calls for safeguards and found a measure of mainstream acceptance. The new U.S. health secretary, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., had his Instagram account suspended in 2021 for posting misinformation about vaccine safety and COVID-19, but many of the ideas he champions have a widespread following. Critics of Dr. Mehmet Oz accused him of sometimes making misleading assertions on the talk show he used to host; Oz now is President Donald Trumps nominee to lead the Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Services.A Netflix series released last month explored the story of Belle Gibson, a popular Australian wellness influencer who amassed a following talking about curing her terminal brain cancer with a healthy lifestyle and alternative medicine. In 2015, Gibson admitted to lying about having a cancer diagnosis. Australias federal court later fined her for failing to donate money she said would go to charity through sales of her cookbook and app. With personal wellness remaining a hot topic, here are some tips health experts have for evaluating the material you see online:Be cautious when an influencer promotes productsMost influencers have or want business relationships with companies that allow them to earn income by promoting products. The arrangements dont necessarily mean content creators dont believe in what theyre marketing, but they do have a vested interest in publicizing products that may or may not work.Creators can get paid for pictures or videos that hype up a product and also earn commissions on sales through features such as affiliate links. Experts note its therefore better to proceed with caution when someone inspires you to hit the buy button, whether its for natural supplements, teas with purported weight loss benefits or any other wellness products that show up in your social media feed.Research published last month in the Journal of the American Medical Association showed a sizable amount of Instagram and TikTok posts that discussed five popular medical tests mostly came from account holders with some form of financial interest in promoting the screenings. After analyzing roughly 980 posts on the two platforms, researchers said most of the posts they found were misleading and failed to mention important harms, including overdiagnosis resulting from healthy people having full-body MRIs or tests to detect early signs of cancer, evaluate microorganisms in the gut or measure hormone levels.Promoting dietary supplements has been a particularly lucrative exercise for many influencers, said Timothy Caulfield, a health policy and law professor at the University of Alberta. He views the supplements industry as the backbone of health misinformation aimed at consumers and designed to fuel billions of dollars in revenue. Its gotten to the point where if someone is selling a supplement, its a red flag, he said. I dont think it was always like that, but it certainly is now.Check for expertiseIn general, consumers should take all bold claims with a degree of skepticism, said Cedric Bryant, chief executive officer at the nonprofit American Council on Exercise. The goal of creators is to increase engagement with their content, and some influencers may be tempted to make unproven assertions to draw in more viewers. If its too good to be true, it probably is, Bryant said. Some health and wellness influencers have medical training, but many do not. Before taking health tips from someone on social media, its a good idea to make sure they have the proper expertise or at least able to share the data that led them to recommend certain products or lifestyle choices. In the fitness area, Bryant recommends checking to see if a creator holds certification from an accreditation organization and then confirming the information through the U.S. Registry of Exercise Professionals database. The American Medical Association and The American Board of Medical Specialties maintain searchable databases for medical doctors, which may help verify the qualifications of creators who share their legal names and general locations. States also operate databases that allow users to check if someone is licensed to practice medicine or has been disciplined for misconduct. If an influencer holding the appropriate credentials pushes certain products, consumers still may want to consider if a brand partnership or other factors are shaping their recommendations.Federal Trade Commission guidelines that reflected the agencys interpretation of federal law directed influencers featuring specific products or services to prominently disclose any endorsements. Yet sponsorships and potential conflicts of interest are not always revealed. In 2023, the year the guidelines were issued, the FTC issued warnings to a dozen online influencers for failing to adequately disclose paid social media posts that promoted sugar-containing products and aspartame, a sweetener found in diet soda, ice cream and other foods. Some of the influencers were registered dieticians.Compare to the prevailing medical consensusIf a creator cites studies to support health and diet claims, its best to check and see if what theyre saying aligns with the latest evidence-based medical consensus.Just because somebody has an M.D. after their name doesnt make them entirely trustworthy, said Elias Aboujaoude, a psychiatrist and Stanford University professor who studies the intersection of psychology and technology.Aboujaoude suggests double-checking health claims with traditionally reputable sources, such as major academic institutions or government health agencies. He also advised looking at studies cited by creators and assessing whether theyve been published in reputable journals and subjected to peer review. In some cases, it might be too soon to know if promising results should be trusted or not, said Katherine Zeratsky, a registered dietitian with the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota. For example, a study might show the benefits of a specific type of herb. But that doesnt necessarily mean the findings have been replicated in other research, a requirement for treatment methods to be considered proven effective, she said.Haleluya Hadero, Associated Press

  • Over 1,000 protesters detained in Turkey since Istanbuls mayors arrest
    www.fastcompany.com
Turkish authorities have detained 1,133 people across Turkey since the start of protests five days ago against the detention of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu, Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya said on Monday. The detention last Wednesday of Imamoglu, President Tayyip Erdogans main political rival, has triggered the biggest street protests in Turkey in more than a decade. On Sunday, a court jailed him, pending trial, on corruption charges that he denies.Despite bans on street gatherings in many cities, the mostly peaceful anti-government demonstrations continued for a fifth consecutive night on Sunday, with hundreds of thousands taking part.Yerlikaya said 123 police officers had been injured during the protests so far, adding that the government would not allow the terrorising of the streets. Those detained include nine journalists who covered overnight protests in several cities, the Journalists Union of Turkey said on Monday. It was not immediately clear why the journalists were detained. An Agence France Presse (AFP) staff photographer is among the detained journalists, the union said in a post on X.Imamoglus main opposition Republican Peoples Party (CHP) has been calling for protests against the court decision to arrest the mayor, which they label as politicised and undemocratic.Imamoglu has denied the charges he faces as unimaginable accusations and slanders and has also called for nationwide protests.Erdogan said last week that the government would not accept the disruption of public order. His government denies that the investigations are politically motivated and says the courts are independent.Omer Celik, spokesperson for Erdogans ruling AK Party, said on Monday the CHPs call for protests was aimed at covering up the oppositions shortcomings.Democratic protest is a (fundamental) right, but the language used by the CHP is not the language of democratic protest, Celik said.JAILED FOR NO REASONImamoglu, 54, was jailed pending trial on Sunday, as the CHP held a primary election to name him presidential candidate. Some 15 million votes were cast in support of the mayor.News of Imamoglus arrest covered the front pages of Turkish newspapers on Monday, with opposition media suggesting the mayor was arrested for being the most credible challenger to Erdogan. The mayors supporters said on Monday the jailing of Imamoglu demonstrated a lack of justice in Turkey.I think there is an injustice committed against Imamoglu. They put the man in prison for no reason, said Adem Bali, a 22- year-old construction worker.Cigdem Tatlica, an unemployed 50-year-old, said she believed there was no justice in Turkey. This system cannot continue like this.In an address to the demonstration in Istanbuls Sarachane district in front of the municipality building, CHP leader Ozgur Ozel said on Sunday that they would continue the protests until Imamoglu was released.Huseyin Hayatsever and Ali Kucukgocmen, Reuters
