• Something Bizarre Is Happening to People Who Use ChatGPT a Lot
    futurism.com
Well, that's not good.Power Bot 'EmResearchers have found that ChatGPT "power users," or those who use it the most and at the longest durations, are becoming dependent upon or even addicted to the chatbot. In a new joint study, researchers with OpenAI and the MIT Media Lab found that this small subset of ChatGPT users engaged in more "problematic use," defined in the paper as "indicators of addiction... including preoccupation, withdrawal symptoms, loss of control, and mood modification."To get there, the MIT and OpenAI team surveyed thousands of ChatGPT users to glean not only how they felt about the chatbot, but also to study what kinds of "affective cues," which was defined in a joint summary of the research as "aspects of interactions that indicate empathy, affection, or support," they used when chatting with it.Though the vast majority of people surveyed didn't engage emotionally with ChatGPT, those who used the chatbot for longer periods of time seemed to start consideringit to be a "friend." The survey participants who chatted with ChatGPT the longest tended to be lonelier and get more stressed out over subtle changes in the model's behavior, too.Chat LackeysAdd it all up, and it's not good. In this study as in other cases we've seen, people tend to become dependent upon AI chatbots when their personal lives are lacking. In other words, the neediest people are developing the deepest parasocial relationship with AI and where that leads could end up being sad, scary, or somewhere entirely unpredictable. This new research also highlighted unexpected contradictions based on how ChatGPT was used. For instance, people tended to use more emotional language with text-based ChatGPT than with Advanced Voice Mode, and "voice modes were associated with better well-being when used briefly," the summary explained. And those who used ChatGPT for "personal" reasons like discussing emotions and memories were less emotionally dependent upon it than those who used it for "non-personal" reasons, like brainstorming or asking for advice.Perhaps the biggest takeaway, however, was that prolonged usage seemed to exacerbate problematic use across the board. Whether you're using ChatGPT text or voice, asking it personal questions, or just brainstorming for work, it seems that the longer you use the chatbot, the more likely you are to become emotionally dependent upon it.Share This Article

  • Critical Ingress NGINX Controller Vulnerability Allows RCE Without Authentication
    thehackernews.com
Mar 24, 2025Ravie LakshmananVulnerability / Cloud SecurityA set of five critical security shortcomings have been disclosed in the Ingress NGINX Controller for Kubernetes that could result in unauthenticated remote code execution, putting over 6,500 clusters at immediate risk by exposing the component to the public internet. The vulnerabilities (CVE-2025-24513, CVE-2025-24514, CVE-2025-1097, CVE-2025-1098, and CVE-2025-1974 ), assigned a CVSS score of 9.8, have been collectively codenamed IngressNightmare by cloud security firm Wiz. It's worth noting that the shortcomings do not impact NGINX Ingress Controller, which is another ingress controller implementation for NGINX and NGINX Plus."Exploitation of these vulnerabilities leads to unauthorized access to all secrets stored across all namespaces in the Kubernetes cluster by attackers, which can result in cluster takeover," the company said in a report shared with The Hacker News.IngressNightmare, at its core, affects the admission controller component of the Ingress NGINX Controller for Kubernetes. About 43% of cloud environments are vulnerable to these vulnerabilities.Ingress NGINX Controller uses NGINX as a reverse proxy and load balancer, making it possible to expose HTTP and HTTPS routes from outside a cluster to services within it.The vulnerability takes advantage of the fact that admission controllers, deployed within a Kubernetes pod, are accessible over the network without authentication.Specifically, it involves injecting an arbitrary NGINX configuration remotely by sending a malicious ingress object (aka AdmissionReview requests) directly to the admission controller, resulting in code execution on the Ingress NGINX Controller's pod."The admission controller's elevated privileges and unrestricted network accessibility create a critical escalation path," Wiz explained. "Exploiting this flaw allows an attacker to execute arbitrary code and access all cluster secrets across namespaces, that could lead to complete cluster takeover."The shortcomings are listed below -CVE-2025-24514 auth-url Annotation InjectionCVE-2025-1097 auth-tls-match-cn Annotation InjectionCVE-2025-1098 mirror UID InjectionCVE-2025-1974 NGINX Configuration Code ExecutionIn an experimental attack scenario, a threat actor could upload a malicious payload in the form of a shared library to the pod by using the client-body buffer feature of NGINX, followed by sending an AdmissionReview request to the admission controller. The request, in turn, contains one of the aforementioned configuration directive injections that causes the shared library to be loaded, effectively leading to remote code execution.Hillai Ben-Sasson, cloud security researcher at Wiz, told The Hacker News that the attack chain essentially involves injecting malicious configuration, and utilizing it to read sensitive files and run arbitrary code. This could subsequently permit an attacker to abuse a strong Service Account in order to read Kubernetes secrets and ultimately facilitate cluster takeover.Following responsible disclosure, the vulnerabilities have been addressed in Ingress NGINX Controller versions 1.12.1, 1.11.5, and 1.10.7.Users are recommended to update to the latest version as soon as possible and ensure that the admission webhook endpoint is not exposed externally. As mitigations, it's advised to limit only the Kubernetes API Server to access the admission controller and temporarily disable the admission controller component if it's not needed.Found this article interesting? • To Win Trust and Admiration, Fix Your Microphone
    www.scientificamerican.com
March 24, 20253 min readTo Win Trust and Admiration, Fix Your MicrophoneFrom job interviews to dating, we subconsciously judge one another based on sound quality when we interact digitallyBy Rachel Nuwer edited by Sarah Lewin Frasier yasinemir/Getty ImagesLike hundreds of millions of others around the world, Brian Scholl, a psychologist and cognitive scientist at Yale University, spent much of the COVID pandemic on Zoom. But during one digital faculty meeting, he found himself reacting unexpectedly to two colleagues. One was a close collaborator with whom Scholl usually saw eye-to-eye, while the other was someone he tended to have differing opinions from. On that particular day, though, he found himself siding with the latter colleague. Everything he said was so rich and resonant, Scholl recalls. As he reflected afterwards, Scholl realized that there was a key underlying difference between the two mens messaging: the colleague whom Scholl normally agreed with had been using a junky built-in microphone on an old laptop, whereas the one with whom he typically disagreed had called in from a professional-grade home-recording studio. Scholl began to suspect that it was the quality of their sound, rather than the content of their arguments, that had swayed his judgment.New research published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences USA suggests his hunch was correct. In a series of experiments, Scholl and his colleagues found that poor audio quality consistently caused listeners to negatively judge speakers in a variety of contextseven if the message itself was exactly the same.On supporting science journalismIf you're enjoying this article, consider supporting our award-winning journalism by subscribing. By purchasing a subscription you are helping to ensure the future of impactful stories about the discoveries and ideas shaping our world today. When chatting on Zoom, everyone is familiar with how they look, but we dont typically take into account how we sound to other people, Scholl says. It turns out this can really drive peoples impressions of how intelligent you are, how credible you are and how datable and hirable you are.Our brain evolved to make intuitive judgments about people not solely on the basis of what they say but also according to how they sound. Ample research has shown that factors such as how confident a person sounds or whether they have an accent influence how others perceive them. Scholl wanted to see if the same pattern would hold when the only difference was technological distortion.Scholl, Robert Walter-Terrill and Joan Danielle Ongchoco, both then graduate students at Yale, created audio recordings in which a human man or woman or a computerized male or female voice read one of three scripts. Each script dealt with a different topic: the readers posed as a job applicant, a potential romantic partner and someone describing a car accident. Some of the recordings were clear, whereas others were artificially manipulated to sound tinny. We tried to use a manipulation thats relevant to daily life, Scholl says. If you spend time on Zoom, you probably know tons of people who sound like this. The researchers recruited more than 5,100 people online and had each participant listen to one script and then answer simple questions about their judgment of the speaker on a continuous scale. The team ensured that the participants actually understood what they had heard by asking some of them to transcribe the recording they heard after they answered the questions.Across all three scripts, and for both human and computerized voices, participants consistently rated the tinny voices as less hirable, datable, credible and intelligent. The findings speak to the deep power of perception, Scholl says, and its ability to make us behave irrationally. Everybody knows that this kind of auditory manipulation does not reflect on the person themselves, he says. But our perception is operating, in some ways, autonomously from higher-level thought.Nadine Lavan, a psychologist at Queen Mary University of London, who was not involved in the research, says the findings are somewhat expected based on what researchers already knew about how we evaluate other people. But a lack of surprise doesnt mean the results are not important or interesting, she says. The study raises questions, she continues, about how much of an effect microphone quality may or may not have in real-world settings. Job applicants, for example dont tend to read out their applications; they tend to give more spontaneous answers, Lavan says. Also, abstract ratings of credibility and of being hirable are informative, but real-life hiring decisions tend to include higher stakes and much more complex trading off of different factors.Assuming the findings do hold in the real world to some extent, Scholl says the takeaway lesson is clear: You should really find out how you sound to other people online. And if you dont sound good, take some remediable action, he says. This was the case for Scholls tinny-sounding colleague, he adds, who eventually upgraded to a better microphone.

Tony Hawk reportedly intervened to get Bam Margera in Pro Skater 3 + 4 remake when Activision said 'no'Troubled skater was missing from announcement roster.Image credit: Activision News by Matt Wales News Reporter Published on March 24, 2025 Skater and former Jackass star Bam Margera will reportedly feature in Activision's upcoming Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 + 4 remake, despite being omitted from the publisher's previously released skater roster - supposedly thanks to a last-minute intervention by Tony Hawk himself.Margera made his series debut in Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 back in 2001 and has appeared in all subsequent instalments. However, fans quickly noticed his absence when 3 + 4's skater line-up was unveiled earlier this month, with many speculating his omission may be related to the legal issues Margera has faced as a result of his struggles with drug and alcohol abuse. Now, though, it's been claimed Margera will appear in the Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 + 4 remake after all - albeit as a last-minute addition at Tony Hawk's insistence. That's according to skating podcast The Nine Club co-host Roger Bagley, as spotted by VGC.Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 + 4 official announcement trailer.Watch on YouTube"Well, here's what happened," Bagley explained in a recent livestream. "The game was already done. Tony called up Activision and was like, 'Hey, we're putting Bam in the thing', and they were like, 'Hey, we can't'. He goes, 'No, you're gonna do it', and basically made them fly Bam back out there to get body-scanned and everything else, and get him back in the game."Activision hasn't yet commented on the claims, but its currently confirmed skater roster - which includes classic skaters and new additions - is as follows: Tony Hawk, Bucky Lasek, Steve Caballero, Kareem Campbell, Geoff Rowley, Andrew Reynolds, Elissa Steamer, Chad Muska, Eric Koston, Rodney Mullen, Jamie Thomas, Rune Glifberg, Bob Burnquist, Rayssa Leal, Chloe Covell, Jamie Foy, Zion Wright, and Yuto Horigome.Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 + 4 launches for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Switch, and PC (via Steam, Battle.net and Microsoft Store) on 11th July. It's also coming to Game Pass Ultimate and Game Pass PC.
