  • The High Cost of Team Trumps Sloppy OpSec
    www.thebulwark.com
(Composite / Shutterstock / Screenshot)THE TOP ISSUE OF THE 2016 presidential election, the one that changed Donald Trump from a TV loudmouth to a world historical figure, was information security. Hillary Clintons private email server and the mere possibility that classified information might have traversed it dominated media coverage and featured prominently in Trumps attacks. Then he won the election and became the biggest information security risk in U.S. history.Eight years later and the dumb keeps coming: In a stunning new security lapse revealed Monday, top Trump administration officials included Atlantic editor Jeffrey Goldberg in their group chat on the encrypted messaging app Signal. At one point, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth shared operational details about upcoming U.S. airstrikes in Yemen, and two hours later they happened. Were not talking about an embedded mole carefully eluding detection. Trumps national security advisor, Michael Waltz, sent Goldberga personification of establishment media if there ever was onean invitation. Goldberg says he eavesdropped on the chat for two days. Apparently none of Americas national security leaders or their staffers noticed. This incident exposes a rich vein of political hypocrisyall the untold hours of Trump administration officials criticizing Hillary Clinton for her emailsthat it is difficult to resist mining. But this latest lapse fits into a disturbing broader pattern, with serious implications for our national security.U.S. military commanders see easily avoidable leaks like this and worry about operational security. At minimum, when the most senior defense leaders are information security risks, it adds another factor to planning thats already quite complex.U.S. intelligence partners see failures like this and conclude America cant be trusted. They have to operate under the assumption that any sensitive information given to the United States could be accidentally leaked by top officials. Not to mention the possibility that President Trump or longtime Putin sympathizer Tulsi Gabbard, the new director of national intelligence, will give it away to adversaries. The loss of trust damages counterterrorism, insight into foreign governments, and other national security goals. If these idiots are accidentally roping in the editor of the Atlantic on secret war deliberations, what are the chances theyre making other serious information-security mistakes, including ones that create openings for foreign intelligence agencies? Probably pretty high.Stay current on the news without losing your mind to it: Sign up for a free or paid Bulwark subscription, and well help you keep your grip.Avoiding problems like that is the point of experts, time-tested procedures, and rule-followers. At a basic level, why are senior national security officials using a private organizations messaging app instead of U.S. government-controlled communications protected by the NSA and preserved as required under the Federal Records Act? And why are classified war deliberations being set up by the national security advisor personally sending out invites to other users on an app?Its stupid, its bad for the country, but Americans shouldnt be surprised. Trump was historically terrible for information security in his first term and after, and voters elected him again in 2024 anyway.Recall that, less than a month after first taking office in 2017, Trump conducted an emergency meeting on a surprise North Korea ballistic missile launch with Japans prime minister at Mar-a-Lago, in view of resort guests with smartphones. The presidents Florida beach club/home is easily accessible, and multiple unauthorized individuals have made it past security, including a suspected Chinese spy carrying a laptop, external drives, and four phones.Just two months into his first term, the president blurted out highly sensitive intelligence from a foreign partner to Russias ambassador and foreign minister in the Oval Office. It wasnt illegalthe commander-in-chief has the power to disclose classified informationbut it served no national interest, and looked like an attempt to impress the Russian officials. The information came from Israel, and concerned a spy placed high inside ISIS in Syria, which was led at the time by Bashar al Assad, a Russian ally and Israeli adversary. Those are just two early examples. Trump intervened to get his son-in-law Jared Kushner a top White House position even though Kushner couldnt pass the standard background check. Kushner subsequently requested more information from the intelligence community than almost any other executive branch official, including on topics outside his purview. He also used WhatsApp to communicate with Saudi Leader Mohammed bin Salman, who was later caught putting malware on Amazon owner Jeff Bezoss phone. After leaving office, Trump illegally took documents containing national security secrets, including some pertaining to nuclear weapons, and kept them in unsecure spaces at Mar-a-Lago. That alone was easily worse than any information security breach Hillary Clinton didor other notable examples, such as Joe Biden, Mike Pence, and David Petraeusnot least because those individuals cooperated with federal officials, while Trump repeatedly lied and defied the law. That led to criminal charges, but with the help of loyalist judge Aileen Cannon, Trump managed to delay the case long enough to run for and win the 2024 election. As bad as Trumps first term was for information security, the White House included some serious professionals that contained his worst impulses. The second Trump administration has been purging those sorts of people and replacing them with loyalists (or no one), further transforming the federal government from a competent, professional civil service into a tool of corrupt authoritarianism. Will Trump punish Waltz or anyone else responsible for this security lapse? Someone might get fired to contain the embarrassment, but it probably wont improve anything, as Trump prizes loyalty more than competence. And his broader priority is clear: Americas president doesnt mind if his administrations actions weaken the United Statesso long as he gains more domestic power for himself. To him that counts as a good deal.Share

  • Doge cuts allow to cash in with SpaceX and Starlink contracts, ex-workers warn | Tech CEO accused of aiming to privatize space and satellite operations as federal agencies reportedly seek contracts
    www.theguardian.com
Elon Musk appears to be laying the groundwork to privatize some space and satellite operations now under the authority of National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (Noaa), or steer lucrative contracts toward his SpaceX and Starlink companies, former agency employees say.Theyre sounding the alarm as at least four other federal agencies have reportedly begun pushing new contracts toward Musks Starlink satellite internet company. Musk, the worlds richest man, has been tasked by Donald Trump with drastically slashing the federal government workforce and costs. The situation raises conflict of interest questions for one of Trumps closest allies who backed him with millions of dollars of funding in the 2024 election. Musk boasts that his so-called department of government efficiency (Doge) slashes spending, but critics say hes using his position to steer government funding toward his companies.Noaa could offer the biggest prizes yet for Musk, presenting the opportunity for SpaceX to have a commanding financial advantage in a commercial US space market expected to grow to a value of nearly $2tn in value over the next decade. Already Doge likely has access to competitors confidential business information at Noaa, former employees at the agency say.More importantly for the public, it would put control of the nations communications infrastructure in the hands of a rightwing billionaire. Noaas activity quietly touches the basic functions of daily life, and everything from dependable cellphone service to how Americans connect to the internet to weather forecasting is at stake, five former Noaa employees who spoke with the Guardian said.Theres a lot of smoke but were not sure where the fire is yet, a former employee said. Were waiting to see when the next shoe drops. In the wake of a firing spree that gutted some Noaa space operations, Donald Trump Jrs investment firm stoked speculation by purchasing $50m worth of SpaceX shares. Noaa operates as part of the US commerce department and is responsible for a range of economic activity relied upon by the public. Musks Doge team has laid off about 1,300 Noaa staff so far.SpaceX primarily launches rockets and satellites for Musk and national governments. Starlink, meanwhile, has nearly 6,000 satellites in low-earth orbit and provides satellite broadband internet service and military communications to at least 2.7 million people in 100 countries.SpaceX is the biggest player in the private space industry and several former Noaa employees praised the company as an often good partner prior to Musks attack on the agency. The space technology company had strong momentum prior to the new Trump administration, making it difficult to parse what is legitimate business and what could be construed as corruption, former employees said.A new emergency Freedom of Information Act request for communications among Noaa offices and Doge in part seeks to shine some light on those questions. The Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility (Peer) request noted that privatization of the agency has long been a goal of the right and was called for in the Project 2025 rightwing playbook. The move is driven by greed and corruption, Peers executive director, Tim Whitehouse, said. The danger is that Musks enterprises could morph into government-sponsored monopolies that would operate with no fear of antitrust prosecution, Whitehouse added.New contracts for StarlinkLeadership for the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) ordered staff in February to find tens of millions of dollars in funding for new Starlink contracts, Rolling Stone reported. The FAA is in the process of updating ageing air traffic control networks and last year awarded a $2.4bn contract to Verizon, but Starlink has already edged into the process. At the US Government Services Administration, Doge ordered federal staff to use Starlink for internet services, an employee told NBC News. Another agency plans to contract with Starlink, according to a federal employee familiar with the situation who spoke with NBC News. Meanwhile, Customs and Border Protection recently authorized an evaluation of Starlink to help monitor the border.Gutting space traffic controlThe nascent space traffic coordination program manages thousands of satellites, debris and spacecraft, and helps prevent up to 50,000 near-collisions, called conjunctions, daily. Starlink accounts for a large number of those.Called the Traffic Coordination System for Space (Traccs), the program would also eventually provide launch and re-entry services for commercial satellites and spacecraft, former employees said. Musks company already works closely with Traccs, but the program has avoided vendor lock and contracts with multiple companies, in no small part because Musks agenda may not always align with the nations, one former official said.SpaceX is a great service provider, but as long as hes in control of the company its not anything that can be counted on, a former Noaa employee said. Those who spoke with the Guardian said it didnt appear that SpaceX had any interest in privatizing or taking over Traccs prior to Trumps re-election, but Musks Doge fired all but one Traccs member in effect crippling a sorely needed operation. That could open the door for privatization, and SpaceX is best positioned. They discover something is broken and conveniently say: Oh, we can fix this, a former Noaa employee said.skip past newsletter promotionSign up to This Week in TrumplandFree newsletterA deep dive into the policies, controversies and oddities surrounding the Trump administrationPrivacy Notice: Newsletters may contain info about charities, online ads, and content funded by outside parties. But private industrys data and forecasts are of extremely poor quality compared to those from the Noaa, a former employee said.Noaa weather satellites have redundancies and fail-safes intentionally built in, and huge effort is put into calibrating them with weather on earth: Noaa flies planes into storms to confirm that the data its satellites are providing is accurate, for example. The data is highly reliable, 24/7, no breakdowns, no ifs, ands or buts, a former agency employee said. If Noaa satellites fail, explode or crash, they added, then people who rely on that data may die, or serious economic damage may be inflicted. The risk of having outages is so significant because that data is used all the time for everything, and for far more than people realize, a former employee said.Musk, by contrast, has a mission of eliminating redundancies and finding efficiencies, and former agency employees noted his rockets and satellites have a history of crashing and exploding.Meanwhile, Noaa monitors space weather, including solar flares, coronas and radiation, and geomagnetic storms that can damage the electric grid and telecommunications on earth and beyond. That could have implications for Musks well-known plans to colonize Mars.If youre serious about sending people to Mars, then you have to be able to monitor and respond to space weather, an employee said.Radio frequencySpaceX, telecom giants and other industries are lobbying the federal government to auction off valuable bands on the radio frequency spectrum the electromagnetic waves that enable wireless communication, including among the military, the CIA, Noaa and their satellites. The obscure function is essential to a wide range of commercial activities, such as cellphone use, and industry wants to get their hands on all that they can because its a finite resource, a former agency employee said.A large part of Noaas forecasts stem from its satellites monitoring water vapor movement in the atmosphere, and the agency owns the radio frequencies at which vapor vibrates. If the Musk-aligned FCC sells bands too close to that frequency, potential interference could impede satellite function and disrupt reliable weather forecasting and cellphone use.Starlink wants more and more spectrum, and you hope [the FCC] would not be stupid enough to auction off the bands next to where water vibrates, but I wouldnt put it past anybody, an employee said.

  • Wreckfest 2 early access is as stripped back as its bumperless bangers, but at least Bugbears bashing together a good chassis
    www.vg247.com
Piling UpWreckfest 2 early access is as stripped back as its bumperless bangers, but at least Bugbears bashing together a good chassisTheres no music and youll be racing against the well-honed skills of BOT 29, but the carnage is the thing - and its pretty satisfying.Image credit: VG247 Article by Mark Warren Senior Staff Writer Published on March 25, 2025 My windscreen replaced by a wall of racing-suited flesh and jagged metal, I floor it, mashing the accelerator to push whatever power my battered engine can still muster to wheels that may not even still be attached. The car creeps forwards at about 12 KPH for less than 30 seconds.SLAM. Yep, definitely thats me wrecked. Time to respawn and crash again. To see this content please enable targeting cookies. That was the loop which made the first Wreckfest tick. The FlatOut successor Bugbear Entertainment gradually built up and tweaked into possibly the most fun arcade racer on the market is a lesson in doing what you say in the tin, and doing it brilliantly. In a sea of confused simcades and often pretty dry sims, it knew exactly what kind of battered, rusty hatchback crudely painted to look like a shark it was.Has Bugbear managed to re-capture that feeling and supercharge it with enough new parts to outdo itself with Wreckfest 2 so far? Its hard to say, but at this very early point in early access, Im tending towards yes. It might seem a bit un-Wreckfest to hide behind qualifiers, but the first thing thatll stick out to you if you fire up this would-be successor right now is that its definitely taking the early bit of EA seriously.Theres no music at all, which means a wonderfully terrifying silence hangs in the air as you navigate menus to pick which car youre going to sacrifice to the scrap gods and the venue thats going to play host to that crime. Right now, youve got four rides to choose from, with two being instantly recognisable updated versions of classic original Wreckfest muscle cars - the Roadslayer and the Rocket. The other two are new and their names reflect that, with American 1 being a US-style family sedan that looks very mid-2000s and European 1 basically being a boxy 80s VW Golf in all but name. A crash course in how not to drive. | Image credit: BugbearTrack-wise, its a similar story. The main route of the Savolax Sandpit folk racing ring returns, and one of the two layouts of a new track - the Scrapyard - is basically a revamped version of the first games ever-chaotic jump-heavy figure eight Bonebreaker Valley. Beyond those, theres the main Scrapyard circuit which is the usual kind of banger circuit with some crossovers, a Kingston Raceway-esque asphalt oval that also boasts a figure eight variant and a demolition arena, and the testing grounds. The latters a BeamNG.Drive-style playground of different jumps and hazards designed to let you play around and, well, test Wreckfest 2s physics/damage model, but each event in it is set up like the usual demo derby mechanically, rather than being straight-up free roam.If you hop into a single player race or derby, youll unsurprisingly be battling against AI foes, but dont expect them to have proper names as they do in the full version of Wreckfest. Instead, its BOT 35 smashing into BOT 2, as BOT 15 powerslides past you. Early access, baby. You gotta be skiddin' me. | Image credit: BugbearSo, hows the actual gameplay? Well, in short, I think its the rough foundation of what could very much become a strong step up on the first Wreckfest. One of the first things I noticed, especially when behind the wheel of the throaty muscle cars, is that Wreckfest 2 seems to be a big improvement in the car audio department. Theres not a large pool yet, but each of the cars in the current early access build boasts an engine note that sounds a lot more distinct and richly-delivered than the often kinda samey drones the originals rides had. Both the car models and the environments look to be rendered with greater fidelity and more detailed textures - though that does come with the slight caveat that my view could be skewed a bit by having done most of my OG Wreckfesting on PS4, and these impressions being from PC early access. As for how they feel to drive, the answers pretty good. Theres no simming going on here, but things feel less like your cars just floating along in between the tyre-screeching turns and sudden stops. One thing I did quickly notice is that Wreckfest 2s cars seem to be wired a lot harder towards requiring a very oversteery setup on oval tracks with long, sweeping bends or ones with tight turns. With a controller, I was suffering a boatload of understeer in such corners if I didnt initiate a drift big enough to lose me time, to the point where I went into the settings and tried messing with the dead zone settings in an effort to tighten up my turning circle into something less like a what a cruise ship might have. On a wheel, things were much better, with the ability to go lock-to-lock and deliver proper dabs of oppo when sliding really helping the situation. On more traditional circuits, youll find yourself leaning against other racers in tight packs early on, recreating the classic Wreckfest banger race challenge of trying not to get spun out and picking the path of least resistance past whichever accidents are inevitably taking place at various points in the lap. It's a contact sport, technically. | Image credit: BugbearBut, what about those crashes, those bumps, those scrapes, you ask? Well, Id say the initial moment your car connects with another thats moving at a decently different velocity is maybe a bit less crunchy and explosive compared to the first game. Thats not to say a lot of damage isnt being done and your wheel isnt liable to be thrown out of your hands momentarily if youre not holding on tight enough, but things are maybe a tad less worthy of being accompanied by cartoony BOOM and KER-SLAM splashes. Its very much still possible to get smashed up or smash things up in satisfying fashion - just see the intro to this article, but the damage model feels a bit more complex this time around, something thats added to by the fact the little notifications you get about specific parts being not in the best shape come in a bit more of a variety. Youll still be handily told stuff like oops, a wheel has become detached and oh brother, this engines taken a beating, but I dont recall being told before that my radiator was leaking or that my big end bearings had been damaged. It did seem a bit unclear how much of a tangible impact these extra details were having on my cars performance, but they are things thatre a bit less obvious to notice mid-race/fight than, for example, one of your gears taking longer to click in or suddenly having three round things on your wagon.Delving into a few derbies didnt really aid me in checking this either, possibly not helped by the fact theres nothing big enough in Wreckfest 2s garage at the moment to be a clear tank that can take a lot of damage rolling weapon in the way the likes of the first games MudDigger or Warwagon are. Thats not a new thing, the original Wreckfests early access was without such vehicles to my knowledge, in both cases likely with the intention to stop everyone gravitating to the same car for such events since beefing up your ride via customisation isnt possible yet - unless painting it pink counts. Is this the wheel life? | Image credit: BugbearYou can still have plenty of the usual fun in these events despite this, but suddenly going back to being without the David vs Goliath element latter-stage Wreckfest developed is noticeable. Maybe Im just suffering from school bus vs driveable loo showdown withdrawal, and all of that ridiculousness will no doubt be coming to Wreckfest 2 in time. For now, though, the base online multiplayer and single player modes work as advertised, aside from a bit of frame rate droppage I got in one race around the scrapyard. Playing against real people also comes with the added benefit, at least in my case, of watching someone in the text chat suddenly start typing out the lyrics to a certain Britney Spears song as part of plea to the silent session overlord to give the upcoming race more laps.Ray tracing [is] for big-balled men and Has anyone seen my dad? are some other things Ive seen yelled into the void. Its still a bit too early to tell for definite if Wreckfest 2s interesting changes to the successful formula will result in a finished product that surpasses its predecessor. But hey, at least we know the community of people determined to give you reasons to want to drive into them so fast their knees end up in weird places has successfully made the jump from that game to what feels like a pretty good early access foundation.

Brown Trousers Time"GTA 6 is basically a huge meteor and we will just stay clear": multiple major publishers are reportedly prepared to delay games to avoid clashing with Rockstar's little thing*Jaws theme starts quietly playing in the background*Image credit: VG247/Rockstar Games News by Mark Warren Senior Staff Writer Published on March 25, 2025 You've probably not heard of it. GTA 6? Ring any bells? No? Well, it's a little indie game that's currently set to drop later this year, in a fashion that's sure to fly under the radar, I swear.Ok, you got me. It's biggest game of the year and several major publishers have now been reported to be prepared to delay their own games if needs be in order to avoid coming out at the same time as Rockstar's "huge meteor".To see this content please enable targeting cookies. This is according to cool new Chris Dring thing The Game Business, which cites three major video game publishers as having told it that they're ready to delay their own games if that ends up being what it takes to avoid running into the GTA 6 time and money buzz-saw.Basically, no one wants to release at exactly the same time as Rockstar's crime fun time, so they're all holding off on locking in their release plans for Q4 this year until they know for sure when that game's coming, with fall 2025 being the current window Take-Two is citing. Studios and publishers which operate top live-service games are also reportedly avoiding planning to drop any significant updates to their titles around the time of GTA 6's release window."Rockstar games always suck a lot of money and, more importantly, time out of the market," The Game Business cites the boss of one of the worlds biggest game publishers as having told it, We dont want to be anywhere near that. We are working up multiple different plans for our titles."Meanwhile, one studio boss put the situation thusly: "GTA 6 is basically a huge meteor and we will just stay clear of the blast zone. We will nudge our releases back or forward three weeks to avoid it. Of course, the problem is everyone is going to do the same. So three to four weeks before or after GTA 6, youre going to get a load of games dropping content in what they believe will be the safe zone."It's the uncertainty that comes with GTA 6 not yet being locked into a concrete date that's causing the most headaches, with publishers fearing that if they opt to delay their stuff into 2026 right now to avoid GTA 6, Rockstar could end up pushing its big shark into next year too, neccessitating more running around from the panicked swimmers at the games industry beach. How will it all play out? We'll just have to see, but you'll now find it a lot harder to fill in the time by exploring an attempted re-creation of GTA 6's map in GTA 5 as a mod attempting to do just that was pulled offline by its creator the other day following a Take-Two YouTube claim. Ah well, off to the GTA Discord server's most unhinged channel it is, then.

  • After Copying Smash's Homework, MultiVersus Publisher Was Apparently Turning To Mario Kart Next
    www.nintendolife.com
Image: Nintendo LifeLate last month, Warner Bros. announced that it was shutting down three studios including Player First, the team behind the soon-to-be-defunct Smash Bros-style brawler MultiVersus. Before things went south, however, it seems that the publisher was looking to another Nintendo franchise for inspiration, this time with WB San Diego behind the wheel (thanks, VGC).According to Sacred Symbols podcast host Colin Moriarty (via "someone once associated with WB San Diego"), the studio was working on a Mario Kart-style racing game codenamed 'Moonlight'. A couple of potential titles were being floated for the racer during development, with both 'WB Racers' and 'XDR (Cross Drift Racers)' on the table."Project Moonlight's roster of drivers would come from Warner's wide array of IP, including Adventure Time, Tom & Jerry, Scooby-Doo and more," Moriarty was apparently told, with his source claiming that the game was built in Unreal Engine 5 and boasted "stylised graphics".Despite being conceived near the start of WB San Diego's lifespan at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, the project was hit with various setbacks, including consistent staff rotations and disagreements around whether it would launch as a free-to-play or paid title. Towards the end of development on the project, all console versions were apparently dropped from the launch plans, with the team hoping to port the PC version at a later date.Moriarty's source also mentioned that there was "quite a lot of animosity internally from people that worked on the game, who felt that it was profoundly unfair that their sister team, Player First, got to launch MultiVersus twice, while they never got a shot to launch at all".Subscribe to Nintendo Life on YouTube800kWe've seen several big IPs try to break into the Mario Kart space of late, from Disney Speedstorm to DreamWorks All-Star Kart Racing not that any have managed to come close to the reputation of the king, mind you. We can kind of see the logic behind trying again with Warner Bros. characters, but looking at the fate of MultiVersus, we doubt it would have been a success.A few weeks before the announcement of the Warner Bros. studio closures, it was revealed that MultiVersus would be shutting up shop on PC, Xbox and PlayStation less than a year after its relaunch. The brawler is set to go offline on 30th May 2025, though local multiplayer will still function after that date, assuming you have it downloaded by then. Select the Permanently Delete Data button. You will then receive an email from 23andMe with a link that will allow you to confirm your deletion request. You can choose to download a copy of your data before deleting it.There is an important caveat, as 23andMes privacy policy states that the company and its labs will retain your Genetic Information, date of birth, and sex as required for compliance with applicable legal obligations. The policy continues: 23andMe will also retain limited information related to your account and data deletion request, including but not limited to, your email address, account deletion request identifier, communications related to inquiries or complaints and legal agreements for a limited period of time as required by law, contractual obligations, and/or as necessary for the establishment, exercise or defense of legal claims and for audit and compliance purposes. This essentially means that 23andMe may keep some of your information for an unspecified amount of time. How to destroy your 23andMe test sample and revoke permission for your data to be used for researchIf you previously opted to have your saliva sample and DNA stored by 23andMe, you can change this setting. To revoke your permission, go into your 23andMe account settings page and then navigate to Preferences. In addition, if you previously agreed to 23andMe and third-party researchers using your genetic data and sample for research, you can withdraw consent from the Research and Product Consents section in your account settings. While you can reverse that consent, theres no way for you to delete that information.Check in with your family membersOnce you have requested the deletion of your data, its important to check in with your family members and encourage them to do the same because its not just their DNA thats at risk of sale it also affects people they are related to.And while youre at it, its worth checking in with your friends to ensure that all of your loved ones are taking steps to protect their data.
