• Gee whiz, Gboard! An invaluable new Android typing upgrade
    www.computerworld.com
Ahh dont you just love the feeling of a fresh n zesty virtual upgrade? Here in the land o Android, that doesnt mean only major new Android versions (and, alas, the woeful waiting that often accompanies em). Few mere mortals realize it, but Googles quietly created a system of ongoing under-the-hood upgrades that affect all Android-appreciating animals equally thanks to the way system-level components have bit by bit been pulled out of the operating system itself and positioned instead as individual apps in the Play Store. That means theyre updated instantly and universally numerous times a year, without the need for any manufacturer involvement. And that, in turn, means even decade-old Android phones get updates every month that are equivalent to an entire Apple operating system rollout. Those updates just arent packaged neatly or presented cohesively, and most people dont consider how all of the small-seeming pieces add up.This current month of ours is the perfect example. While were been gawking and giggling and guffawing (and whatever other g-oriented actions youve been up to), Googles been giving us an incredible upgrade to the Android typing experience. Its been showing up on Android devices worldwide all week, without any fanfare or announcement. And its up to you to dig it up, put it into a place where youll see it, and then start putting it to practical use.The good news is that (a) its brilliantly useful and easy to use and (b) it couldnt be much simpler to find, once you know where to look.Lemme show ya.[Psst: Love shortcuts? For more ways to supercharge your workflow, check out more articles in ourTech for Architects series, which includes our recommendations of Top Laptops for Architects and Designers. There are many reasons to love Rome: the food, the art, the history. For architects, it is home to some of the most inspirational buildings in the world: the Colosseum, Vittoriano, and St. Peters Basilica, to name but a few. However, there is another lesser-known visual spectacle in Rome that has architects around the world talking: massive flocks of starlings. For centuries, these tiny birds have been drawn to Romes deeply textured faades and intricate stonework, creating nesting spots in the many cracks and crevices of its ancient buildings. Romes dense mix of historic structures, sheltered courtyards, and warm microclimate have allowed these birds to thrive for generations, delighting locals and tourists alike with their stunning murmurations for many winters. However, the urban landscape is changing dramatically. Restoration projects and modern construction throughout the city are increasingly favoring smooth materials like polished concrete, steel and glass, none of which offer sheltered spots for nesting. Renovations to historic sites, such as the cleaning and sealing of travertine stone, have further reduced nesting spaces. The city continues to host significant murmurs of starlings in its skies, but their ability to roost and breed within the built environment is diminishing, and its not just Rome thats the problem. The Tip of the Iceberg: Bird-Safe GlassThe Hub at Prairie Shores by Gensler, Chicago, Illinois | Photo by Kendall McCaugherty Hall + Merrick PhotographersStarlings arent the only species losing ground. Urban expansion frequently disrupts airborne wildlife. Take New York City. Each year, roughly 230,000 birds collide with reflective skyscraper windows, mistaking mirrored glass for open sky. These fatalities present one of the largest killers of birds in the world. In Sydney, the pressures of urbanization on bats, particularly the grey-headed flying fox, are coming to light. As natural forests have been cleared for housing developments and commercial centers, these bats, key pollinators for native eucalyptus trees, have been forced into smaller roosting sites within city parks and green spaces. Unlike many birds, which can nest in artificial structures, flying foxes require large, interconnected tree canopies to live happy lives. In both instances, architects and designers are being brought in to consult on finding solutions. Bird-safe glass, for example, that features ultraviolet coatings and subtle etchings, which break up reflections in ways that birds can detect but remain nearly invisible to the human eye, is becoming more and more popular with many champions of the technology campaigning to make it essential in buildings of heights above 75 feet (23 meters), or the primary flight zone for many bird species. In New York, regulations now require bird-safe glass for all new construction up to 85 feet (26 meters) to reduce the number of collisions.Vertical Forests and Green Corridors100 VandambyCOOKFOX Architects, New York City, New YorkSydneys architects and urban planners are introducing vertical forests and green corridors, effectively extending the citys canopy through high-rise structures covered in vegetation. It is an initiative that not only supports displaced wildlife like the grey-headed flying fox but also as a way of mitigating urban heat, controlling air pollution, and enhancing stormwater management.Undoubtedly, green roofs and living walls contribute to biodiversity, though much of their effectiveness depends on plant selection and placement. Monarch butterflies in North America, for example, rely on milkweed and other native plants as larval host species, but often green developments will choose aesthetics over function, planting non-native species. For pollinators, these non-native plants actually offer little value and do nothing to help increase biodiversity numbers. Studies by Cornell University have shown that butterfly populations thrive in cities that integrate native vegetation into rooftop gardens and green infrastructure projects. Their research indicates that urban spaces with native plantings can increase pollinator activity by up to 50% compared to ornamental plantings. The importance of ecology-driven design choices by architects and designers cannot be overstated. From Lighting to Swift Bricks100 Vandam by COOKFOX Architects, New York City, New YorkLighting is another crucial, often-overlooked factor that affects urban wildlife. Artificial light pollution disrupts the circadian rhythms of nocturnal species and confuses migratory birds that navigate using celestial cues. Studies in Toronto, where thousands of birds die each year due to disorientation caused by excessive lighting, have led to the implementation of bird-friendly lighting guidelines. These measures include motion-activated lighting, downward-facing fixtures, and warmer-colored LED bulbs, all of which help reduce avian casualties without reducing functionality. One of the simplest and most effective interventions for avian conservation in cities is using swift bricks. These are specially designed nesting boxes that are built into the masonry of modern buildings, mimicking the deep crevices found in older stonework. Unlike traditional birdhouses, swift bricks are designed to be unobtrusive, blending into contemporary structures as part of the overall design. They have been successfully incorporated into new residential developments across the UK, where local planning regulations encourage their inclusion in new build properties after the species was added to the red list of endangered birds in 2021, when its population fell by 58% from 1995-2018. Typically placed at least five meters above ground level, swift bricks provide safe nesting sites without too much crossover between the nesting birds and the homeowners.Learning From the PastHAUT Amsterdam by Team V Architecture, Amsterdam, Netherlands.History often offers essential lessons for todays architects. Romes textured faades, built for their beauty and grandeur, once unintentionally housed a diverse array of bird populations. From those earliest architectural wonders, it has been clear that material choices shape urban ecology for better or worse. Sadly, many of todays modern architects have forgotten, and our preference for glossy, seamless buildings has led to substantial ecological losses in cities worldwide. Yet, there is always time to turn things around, and by choosing to incorporate varied surface textures, modular nesting elements, and considered lighting solutions, architects can design a world where humans can live harmoniously with our avian neighbors. Romes starlings are a reminder that urban wildlife is deeply linked to the built environment. Their decline makes it clear that how we design buildings must evolve to prioritize animal-safe materials, habitat-conscious design, and an awareness of ecological impact. In doing so, we can actively reverse the increase in biodiversity loss across the world, and the Starlings can continue to delight Romes visitors for generations to come. For more ways to supercharge your workflow, check out more articles in ourTech for Architects series, which includes our recommendations of Top Laptops for Architects and Designers.Top image: The Muse & CasaNova by Barcode Architects, Rotterdam, Netherlands. The post Concrete Jungles, Empty Skies: How Smarter Design Can Bring Wildlife Back to Cities appeared first on Journal.

  • CD Projekt Co-CEO Believes Single-Player Games Like The Witcher 4 Will Continue to be Popular
    gamingbolt.com
In its latest financial report where the company touted almost $120 million in profits for 2024, CD Projekt has also doubled down on its goals of making more single-player games. In the opening pages of the report, co-CEO Micha Nowakowski wrote about how games like The Witcher 4 and a future sequel to Cyberpunk 2077 will continue to be popular.Following talking about some of the major milestones CD Projekt hit over the previous years, including The Witcher 4 having entered full production, Nowakowski also spoke about how the company will continue to make single-player games while also collaborating with global leaders in technology to ensure that the company stays on the cutting edge.We are aware that the video game market continues to evolve however, we believe that cutting-edge single-player games rooted in strong franchises and immersive narratives will continue to enjoy great popularity, wrote Nowakowski. Our experience, along with brands such as The Witcher and Cyberpunk, which it is our pleasure to further develop, help us build a strong position on the market and paint a positive outlook while collaboration with global tech and innovation leaders enables us to keep abreast of technical developments in the industry and continue to deliver top-quality entertainment. In the same letter, Nowakowski also wrote about the companys work with Cyberpunk 2077 in the form of post-launch support through free updates. He brought up the game getting the BAFTA award that celebrated continuous support for the game, while also talking about the upcoming Mac release of Cyberpunk 2077.During the year Cyberpunk 2077 went on to win additional accolades, including a prestigious BAFTA award, securing its status as one of the most consequential games of the recent years, he wrote. We continue to strengthen the franchise the macOS release will allow us to reach new players and further expand the Night City community.Nowakowskis statement about single-player games being popular in the future comes just a short time after EA CEO Andrew Wilson having spoken about Dragon Age: The Veilguard not hitting internal sales milestones. In a quarterly earnings call back in February, Wilson said that Dragon Age: The Veilguard failed to maintain an audience due to it not having any online shared-world features that would drive deeper engagement with players. To break beyond the core audience, games need to directly connect to the evolving demands of players who increasingly seek shared-world features and deeper engagement alongside high-quality narratives in this beloved category, said Wilson. Dragon Age had a high-quality launch and was well-reviewed by critics and those who played; however, it did not resonate with a broad enough audience in this highly competitive market. For more details about CD Projekts latest earnings report, check out our coverage of the companys profits in 2024 that also features a small celebratory video with the companys CFOR. You can also check out our coverage of the companys next major release, The Witcher 4 (featuring Ciri as its protagonist), which the studio believes wont come out before 2027.

  • CD Projekt Made Almost $120 Million in Profits in 2024 Without Any New Releases
    gamingbolt.com
The Witcher 4 developers parent company CD Projekt has revealed through its recent financial report for 2024 that it made $260 million in revenue, resulting in almost $120 million in net profit. According to the report, these revenue figures would make 2024 the third-best year in its history.CD Projekt CFOR Piotr Nielubowicz celebrated the revenue during the financial report with a video message, where he also pointed out that the profits came in despite the company not having released a single game in the time period. Check out the video message below. Our 2024 financial results are really strong: nearly 1 billion PLN in consolidated revenues and nearly 470 million PLN in net profit, Nielubowicz (translation via provided captions). This is the third highest profit line in the Companys history and the best result we have ever managed in a year which did not include any major releases.Elsewhere in the video, Nielubowicz also spoke about the highlights for CD Projekt from 2024. Leading the charge this time around was the unveiling of The Witcher 4 with a trailer during The Game Awards. Nielubowicz calls the reveal that Ciri will be the protagonist to be a special highlight.Much happened in 2024 it was a busy year, but also a satisfying one, he said. Lets begin with what I hope many of you have been waiting for: The Witcher 4 has moved on to full-scale production. The highlight of the year was the reveal of Ciri as the main protagonist of the upcoming trilogy. This took place in the form of a dark six-minute trailer unveiled at The Game Awards gala. When it comes to the money CD Projekt made in 2024, Cyberpunk 2077 was seemingly the main driver behind revenue. He also spoke about the accolades CD Projekt got for its post-launch support of Cyberpunk 2077 in the form of free updates and DLC release. In business terms, Cyberpunk continued as the main driving force of the past year, Nielubowicz explained. In late November we announced that cumulative sales of the game since its launch had topped 30 million copies, while the Phantom Liberty expansion had sold over 8 million units.More awards also followed: we are particularly proud of the BAFTA Best Evolving Game award, presented in recognition of post-release support for Cyberpunk 2077. Still, we are not resting on our laurels, and we want even more gamers to visit Night City. This year we plan to release the game on Mac devices equipped with Apple Silicon hardware. Finally, Nielubowicz also spoke about how these latest earnings have allowed the company to increase its cash reserves, and in turn, how CD Projekt is able to stay independent in terms of both financial aspects, as well as its creative output. These resources enable us to remain independent in both financial and creative terms, he said. Its clear that top-quality games with superb storylines can continue to attract gamers for many years. This is why we invest in new projects, going beyond the realm of video games, as well as in new technologies, which, in the coming years, will enable us to deliver excellent, memorable experiences to fans of our franchises.CD Projekts next major video game project is The Witcher 4. For more details about Ciri as the games protagonist, heres what the voice actor for previous protagonist Geralt thinks about it. While it has entered full production, CD Projekt RED doesnt believe that The Witcher 4 will come out before 2027.

  • Activision user research workers are unionizing 'to create an industry that works for them'
    www.gamedeveloper.com
A supermajority of user research workers at Activision have voted to unionize under the Communications Workers of America (CWA) banner. The CWA confirmed the news in a press release and explained those workers will become members of CWA Local 9400. Microsoft has recognized the union, which has named itself Activision User Research Union-CWA.Activision User Research Union-CWA is hoping to secure higher wages, job security and protections amid rampant layoffs, and transparency around promotions and career advancement. It has become the first union formed by video game user researchersbut joins a number of others that have emerged at Microsoft after the company signed a labor neutrality agreement with the CWA."We are excited to join our fellow game makers across the video game industry to show whats possible when workers can freely build solidarity in the workplace," said organizing committee member and quantitative user researcher Nicolaas VanMeerten. "Many of us were mobilized to do something about the layoffs in 2023 and 2024, and now we can look out for each other with a union."CWA Local 9400 president Maurice Washington said it's critical that workers in the game industry have a "protected voice" to ensure they can fight for their fair share.Related:"We are proud to welcome these workers to CWA and are looking forward to meeting Microsoft at the bargaining table to secure a fair union contract," they added. The news caps a remarkable few days for unionizing workers in the game industry. United Videogame Workers-CWA (UVW-CWA) broke cover at GDC 2025 last week to fight for "dignity and respect."The union attracted 100 new members within hours of launching and has now welcomed over 350 due-paying members into its ranks. As a direct-join union, UVW-CWA is open to contractors, freelancers, and developers directly impacted by layoffs. It's a setup the union hopes will enable industry-wide reform by uniting swathes of developers across the U.S. and Canada."Industry bosses have shown time and time again that they will choose the siren call of profit over uplifting workers or doing whats right," said UVW-CWA last week. "Now is the time to stand with your peers, and fight for the dignity and respect you deserve."

  • E-bikes banned on London public transport after unsafe mods cause fires
    www.theverge.com
Transport for London (TfL) has announced that all non-folding e-bikes will be banned from the majority of Londons public transport network. The ban has been driven by the fire risk from regular bikes converted into e-bikes using DIY kits, but extends to purpose-built e-bikes too in the name of easier enforcement. The new ban comes into effect on March 31st, and applies to the London Underground, Overground, Elizabeth Line, and DLR. The only e-bikes that will be permitted on those services are folding e-bikes, which TfL says are less likely to have been converted into e-bikes using mod kits. That exemption will be a boon for Brompton and Gocycle, two London-based companies that focus on foldable models.TfL says that cycles that have been adapted using electronic conversion kits pose a greater fire risk than purpose-built e-bikes, but that it can be hard to differentiate modified bikes from other models. The organization adds that the ban is necessary until improved product safety measures are in place for conversion kits, batteries, and chargers. The ban follows several fires on public transport linked to e-bikes, including one that burst into flames on the platform at west Londons Rayners Lane station. Following that incident, the train drivers union ASLEF threatened a strike if safety measures werent implemented, which was backed by the separate RMT and TSSA transport unions. E-scooters have been banned across the network since 2021.Whilewe recognisethe sustainable benefits e-bikes, and micromobility generally, bring to our city, the reality isthat across Londonwehave beenseeing an e-bike or e-scooter fireevery other day, on average, and we have particular concern about the risk posed by conversion kits or modified e-bikes, London Fire Brigade deputy commissioner Charlie Pugsley says. When these fires occur, they can besudden, incrediblyferocious andproducesmoke that isextremely toxic.Full-size bikes electronic or otherwise are already not permitted on Londons bus and tram services, and are only allowed on certain parts of the Underground network at certain times, with a blanket ban during rush hour. Once the electric bike ban comes into effect, non-folding e-bikes will only be permitted on the Woolwich Ferry, certain river and coach services, and the dedicated Silvertown Tunnel Cycle Shuttle, which opens on April 7th.See More:

  • GeoGuessr is coming to Steam after 12 years in your browser
    www.theverge.com
GeoGuessr on Steam looks an awful lot like GeoGuessr in a browser.12-year-old browser game GeoGuessr is getting a belated port to PC, with a new listing for the game now in the Steam Store. Despite its age, GeoGuessr will launch in Early Access when it goes on sale some time in April 2025.GeoGuessr first launched in 2013, and tasks players with figuring out their coordinates after being dropped into a random Google Street View location. Over the years its developed an unlikely competitive esports scene, which the Steam edition looks to capitalize on, with a focus on competitive modes and ranked play. The Steam listing explains that the game will remain in Early Access for at least six months, while the developers add new game modes, maps, and competitive features. At launch it will support ranked Solo Duels and unranked Team Duels, including cross-play with the browser version. What we dont know is exactly when in April GeoGuessr will launch on Steam, or how much it will cost. While the games browser version was initially free, it now only allows you to make three guesses per day before requiring a paid subscription, starting from $2.49 per month. GeoGuessrs iOS and Android apps are locked behind the $2.99 Pro Unlimited plan, but the Steam app will require a new account that will not be synced with existing Geoguessr accounts, so may have its own pricing structure.
