  • I will protect Kamala Khans father at all costs
    www.polygon.com
In this weeks episode of Daredevil: Born Again, Matt Murdock finds himself in a hostage situation at a bank. Well, more accurately, he heads right back into a hostage situation after leaving the bank, because he overhears the robbers conspiring. Its a pretty thrilling episode, made all the more wonderful by the fact that Matts partner in escalating the hostage situation is none other than Yusuf Khan, Ms. Marvels father.[Ed. note: This post contains spoilers for the fifth episode of Daredevil: Born Again.]Matt actually meets Mr. Khan before the hostage situation, because hes come to the bank to ask for a loan. Mr. Khan adorably gushes about his daughter, Jersey City, and his custom Ms. Marvel Funko Pop, but unfortunately he cant give Matt the business loan he needs for his firm. What he can do, however, is step up and assist Matt as he deals with the criminals. Hes a capable ally, and while ultimately everything ends up OK for him, there were some close calls. I was particularly stressed and if anything happened to Mr. Khan, I wouldve sobbed. I will protect him at all costs which is a much-needed feeling for any MCU character.Twenty years ago, the character in a hostage situation would probably be some superheros love interest, la Green Goblin dangling Mary Jane off the Queensboro Bridge. Weve more or less evolved past the damsel-in-distress trope in superhero movies, but at the same time, the bad guys do have to threaten someone. And its always more interesting if that someone has a personal connection to the hero or the audience. But at this point in the MCU not many heroes have families or even friends who are just plain ol civilians. And if they do, those characters arent really active parts of their story. Sure, its fun when the whole gang gets to kick ass together, but its hard to be worried when everyone can hold their own in a fight. As for Normal Civilian Characters who are just mentioned sometimes (hello, Hawkeyes family), we dont actually care if theyre threatened because we just do not really know who they are outside of their most basic one-word character description (anyone remember Clints sons name?).The big exception is Kamala Khan. Shes a teenager, which means she lives with her parents and has to navigate her superpowered life and her mundane one more directly than some of the other heroes. Her family, while being wonderfully entertaining characters in their own right, also remind us that she has a life outside being a hero, one that she wants to protect. She may not be keeping her superhero identity a secret from her family, but theyre also not suiting up and fighting alongside her. They are, however, pulled into her wacky adventures, be it getting swallowed by Flerken or watching Captain Marvel smash up their living room.Kamalas superhero antics tend to be more lighthearted than the heavy crime-drama vibes in Daredevil, so holy hell its tense to see her goofy father in a dangerous scenario. Thats Mr. Khan! I know him! I know that he dressed up in a Hulk cosplay to make his daughter happy, and keeps a little Funko Pop of her on his desk! I know he loves his daughter, even when her superpowers keep pulling him into increasingly bizarre situations! I figured hed come out unscathed, since this show isnt even his own property, but I felt way more invested in his fate than I wouldve with random strangers simply because I actually know who he is outside of this specific scenario. The MCU needs more mundane characters we care about, so that when theyre in danger, we actually give a damn.

  • PlayStation Plus adds surprise hit RoboCop: Rogue City in April
    www.polygon.com
PlayStation Blog just went live with news on the trio of games being doled out next month to those with an active PlayStation Plus subscription.RoboCop: Rogue City, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth Hackers Memory will up for download starting next Tuesday, April 1 (no fooling). RoboCop in particular is only on PlayStation 5, while The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Digimon Story also have PlayStation 4 versions. While the asymmetrical multiplayer of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre also looks like a lot of fun, the main draw here is definitely RoboCop: Rogue City. The first-person shooter starts with an action-heavy sequence that would be at home in any of the classic dystopian sci-fi films on which its based, but soon expands into a semi-open world adventure full of side quests and impeccable voice acting by RoboCop himself, Peter Weller. Dont skip this one, especially if youre already a fan of the RoboCop franchises kitschy charm. The only two things I know about Digimon come from the shows English theme song it stands for digital monsters and apparently theyre the champions but Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth Hackers Memory is supposed to be pretty decent. If you missed out on last months PlayStation Plus games, Dragon Age: The Veilguard, Sonic Colors: Ultimate, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Cowabunga Collection will be available until March 31.

  • The Best (and Newest) MacBook Air Is Already on Sale
    lifehacker.com
We may earn a commission from links on this page. Deal pricing and availability subject to change after time of publication. It's rare to see a deal on a premier Apple device so soon after release, but that's exactly what's going on with the M4 MacBook Air right now. Announced just a few weeks ago, it's now $50 off (or $60 off if you go for an upgrade) as part of Amazon's Big Spring Sale event. While not the biggest discount in the world, that's a pretty quick turnaround on our favorite MacBook Air right now. Apple M4 MacBook Air $949.00 at Best Buy $999.00 Save $50.00 Get Deal Get Deal $949.00 at Best Buy $999.00 Save $50.00 What makes the M4 MacBook Air specifically so attractive? Well, aside from being the most recent model, it features the same processor as current base-level MacBook Pros, albeit with slightly fewer GPU cores unless you shell out a little bit more. Luckily, both GPU core loadouts are on sale heresimply choose the model with 16GB of memory and 512GB of storage for the upgrade. But regardless of what you choose, this is a significant power bump over the MacBook Airs of the past, which had fallen into using last-gen chips until now.All of this comes with pretty good value, too. Even without a sale, the M4 MacBook Air is the first in a while to offer the most recent available chip at an entry-level price point, replacing the M2 MacBook Air in the sub-$1,000 arena. That's a two-generation upgrade at no extra cost.Really, unless you want a beefy M4 Pro or M4 Max chip, there's little reason to shell out for an MacBook Pro right now, since the M4 Air can easily keep up with the current entry-level Pro model. The only caveat is that this sale only applies to the 13-inch version of the Air; the 15-inch version is still full price.Shopping for tech? Lifehacker can help you make the right decision. • The latest Kindle update lets you turn pages by double-tapping
    www.engadget.com
Amazon has updated Kindles with a new way to navigate books. While nothing will recapture the tactile pleasure of physical page turn buttons, anyone with a Kindle running Version 5.18.1 of Amazon's software will now be able to double-tap the side or back of their e-reader to turn pages."Double Tap to Page Turn" can be turned on in the Settings menu under Device Options. Amazon says it works for more than just turning pages. You can also use double taps to scroll through your Home and Library pages, too. Interestingly, the option doesn't use the touchscreen at all. Good E-Reader speculates Amazon is relying on the accelerometer inside Kindles to detect taps.Along with the update, Amazon is also adding a feature it calls "Recaps for Books in Series." These are short summaries "for thousands of bestselling English language Kindle books in series you have purchased or borrowed." The company already does things like automatically group books from the same series to make them easier to find, but this should save you the trouble of looking up a summary of A Dance with Dragons before diving into The Winds of Winter assuming it's ever released. The 5.18.1 update is rolling out now newer Kindles, like the Kindle Colorsoft, and devices as old as the 10th generation Kindle and Kindle Paperwhite. It will also be available on the last of Amazon's e-readers to have physical buttons, the Kindle Oasis. If you don't see it on your device now, you can manually download the update from Amazon's website and install it yourself. This article originally appeared on Engadget at https://www.engadget.com/mobile/tablets/the-latest-kindle-update-lets-you-turn-pages-by-double-tapping-175452454.html?src=rss
