  • What to know about the abortion pill under the Trump administration
    www.fastcompany.com
Many Americans wonder whether the pill used in most U.S. abortions will be restricted under the new Republican administration in Washington.President DonaldTrumps pickto lead the Food and Drug Administration,Dr. Marty Makary, wasconfirmed by the Senatelate Tuesday. In recent testimony before the Senate health committee, Makary wouldnt commit to specific action on the pill, called mifepristone, despite prodding from both Republicans and Democrats.Medical professionals call it among the safest medications ever approved by the FDA. But a Christian conservative group that sued the FDA over the drug says it has caused tens of thousands of emergency complications.Heres what to know about the safety of mifepristone, which is typically used withmisoprostolin medication abortions that make up close to two-thirds of abortions in the U.S.What are the safety limits on use of the abortion pill? The FDA approved mifepristone in 2000 as a safe and effective way toend early pregnancies. Currently, there are no in-person requirements and the pill can be sent through the mail.Thats not how the FDA first treated mifepristone, which on rare occasions can cause dangerous, excessive bleeding that requires emergency care. Strict safety limits were placed on who could prescribe and distribute it only specially certified physicians and only as part of three mandatory in-person appointments with the patient getting the drug. The doctors also had to be capable of performing emergency surgery to stop excess bleeding and an abortion procedure if the drug didnt end the pregnancy.Over time, the FDA reaffirmed mifepristones safety and repeatedly eased restrictions. How often are there serious problems?Abortion opponents say the FDAs 2021 decision allowing online prescribing and mail-order use of mifepristone resulted in many more emergency complications. But that argument lumps together women experiencing a range of issues from mifepristone not working to people who may simply have questions or concerns but dont require medical care.OB-GYNs say a tiny fraction of patients suffer major or serious adverse events after taking mifepristone.Alegal brieffiled with the Supreme Court last year by a group of medical organizations including the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists says: When used in medication abortion, major adverse events significant infection, excessive blood loss, or hospitalization occur in less than 0.32% of patients, according to a highly regarded study with more than 50,000 patients. The definition that scientists generally use for serious adverse events includes blood transfusions, major surgery, hospital admissions and death, said Ushma Upadhyay, one of the authors of that2015 study. The prescribing information included in the packaging for mifepristone tablets lists slightly different statistics for what it calls serious adverse reactions. It cites ranges for how frequently various complications occur: 0.03% to 0.5% for transfusion; 0.2% for sepsis and 0.04% to 0.6% for hospitalization related to medication abortions. The ranges reflect findings across various relevant studies, experts said. Why do patients go to the emergency room?Mifepristones labeling lists a complication that most medical groups dont consider a serious or major adverse event: ER visits, which ranged from 2.9% to 4.6%. The current FDA label lists going to the ER as an option if patients experience prolonged heavy bleeding, severe abdominal pain or a sustained fever. But ER visits dont always reflect big problems. Some people may go there after a medication abortion because they want to be checked out or have questions but dont have a doctor, said Upadhyay, a public health scientist at the University of California, San Francisco. Others, she said, dont want to go to their primary care provider about their abortion because of stigma.Astudy she co-authoredin 2018 found that slightly more than half of patients who visited the ER because of abortions received only observational care. How effective is the pill?Mifepristone results in a completed abortion 97.4% of the time, according to U.S. studies cited in the FDA label. But in 2.6% of cases, a surgical intervention is needed. And 0.7% of the time, the pregnancy continues.Thats compared to a procedural abortion in a clinic, where the chance of the procedure failing to end a pregnancy is extremely, extremely low, probably less than 0.1%, said Dr. Pratima Gupta, a board member for the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.Any time a procedural abortion is done, the clinicians ensure that it was a complete abortion by examining the tissue that is removed or performing an ultrasound during or after the procedure, she said.Gupta, who has done abortion procedures for more than 20 years, said there are very few complications from abortion any kind of abortion, medication or procedural abortion.Onestudysuggested thats just as true for medication abortions that happen in a clinic, a doctors office or at home with the help of telehealth. How does mifepristones safety and effectiveness compare to other drugs? The FDA makes drug approval decisions on a case-by-case basis, weighing effectiveness, safety and other factors. No drug is 100% effective, and many common medications dont work for a significant portion of patients.Antidepressants typically help between 40% and 60% of people with depression. New antibiotics approved by the FDA often resolve about 70% of infections.Since 2000, roughly 6 million patients have taken mifepristone, according to the FDA. A 2021 review of agency records looking for deaths that were likely related to the drug identified 13, or 0.00027% of patients.Medical organizations supporting mifepristones availability say the drugs safety given the rate of deaths compares to ibuprofen, which more than 30 million Americans take in any given day. ___The Associated Press Health and Science Department receives support from the Howard Hughes Medical Institutes Science and Educational Media Group and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. • Brutalist Concrete Hilltop Home Seamlessly Integrates With Nature, While Maximizing Elevated Position
    www.yankodesign.com
The Frame House is a striking brutalist home perched on a hilltop near Santa Brbara de Nexe village in Portugal. Designed by Lisbon-based Pedro Domingos Arquitectos, it features exposed, board-marked concrete throughout and large openings that deliberately frame the surrounding landscape. The four-bedroom residence maximizes its elevated position with strategic architectural elements. The design includes generous cut-outs, expansive terraces, and a rooftop swimming pool, fulfilling the architects vision to create a home that seamlessly integrates with nature while maintaining its raw concrete character.Like an ancient ruin, the design belongs to the landscape in a timeless way, as if it has always been there, said founder Pedro Domingos. The house evolves with the changing daylight, creating a dynamic and highly atmospheric experience. Every window frames a breathtaking landscape, offering views of either nature or the sky, like perfectly composed photographs, he continued.Designer: Pedro Domingos ArquitectosIn order to maximize the views, the architects elevated most living spaces to the upper level, where the kitchen sits beneath an angular skylight next to an external dining area. This arrangement creates an efficient indoor-outdoor flow thats both practical and visually striking. The spacious lounge opens through rotating glass doors onto a concrete-canopied terrace that steps down into a swimming pool. High walls flank the pool, strategically framing the landscape rather than blocking it. Along the southern edge, recessed balconies with black metal balustrades extend the living space while remaining sheltered within deep concrete reveals, offering protection without compromising the panoramic vistas.Sleek balconies stretch across the southern edge of the upper level, nestled within substantial concrete recesses and featuring minimalist black metal railings. The lower level adopts a more segmented, intimate layout, housing three additional bedrooms, each with its ensuite bathroom. This thoughtful arrangement creates a clear separation between the homes social and private spaces. Each bedroom boasts its own private patio, forming personal outdoor spaces that are protected by the homes concrete walls. These patios serve as intimate spaces where residents can spend some much-needed time in nature, without actually stepping out of their homes. These patios are quite thoughtful and refreshing in comparison to the typical afterthought outdoor spaces seen in many contemporary homes. The home follows a sleek rectangular plan, interrupted by angular extensions that house bathrooms, storage, and the main staircase. This central feature is quite impressive, illuminated by a high-level window positioned above a curved concrete wall. This unexpected organic element softens the rigid brutalist geometry while preserving the homes distinctive character. On the main floor, the space flows seamlessly, creating a continuous environment without visual barriers, allowing a strong connection between the interior and the surrounding landscape, Domingos said. The lower floor houses the more private rooms, offering quieter, more intimate views with a domestic feel, he concluded. The post Brutalist Concrete Hilltop Home Seamlessly Integrates With Nature, While Maximizing Elevated Position first appeared on Yanko Design.

  • YouTuber custom builds fully functional crab-shaped PS One with movable arms for controller
    www.yankodesign.com
We live in the world surrounded by games, memes, and mods. When all three combine, the result is mindboggling. Case in point, the Playstacean a carabified version of the good old PlayStation 1. Yes, its exactly as it reads and looks; a PS One in the shape of a crab. Sony may have pulled the plugs on the game console almost two decades back, but that hasnt stopped a YouTuber from creating a crab-like PS One (a model released after the first boxy PlayStation), based on the memes by video game concept artist Anh Dong.YouTube content creator GingerOfOz has modified the PS One into a crab-shaped functional game console complete with movable arms. As it appears, this DIY console is modified to resemble Dangs illustrations titled Playstacean, which really impressed GingerOfOz when he first saw it. It was at the top of his mind to build the artwork into a functional game player, and the vision turned into reality when he was able to get a used PS One from eBay.Designer: GingerOfOzAfter receiving the old PS One, he got down to carcinize it. He traded the basic gray body for a vibrant orange color and gave the console the crab looks with movable limbs and a heart to nestle the disc drive. He has modified it to exactly match the style and shape of Dangs Playstacean, and has named the creation the same as well. The custom-built device required some tinkering and refitting, which started with the motherboard that was trimmed to fit the new crab body. The boxy upper half of the modified console has a crab-like face with eye sockets and antennae, while the lower half incorporates ports, and mounts for the motherboard and disc drive. Since the shape of the PS One is pretty distinct from what GingerOfOz wanted in his console, he has positioned the controller and memory card ports at an angle. The entire console shell was first designed in CAD and then 3D printed in parts, which include the four parts of each movable limb of the craby PS One. The pincers of the crab-shaped console are meant to function as the controller. But like the innards were not very easy to make, solder and wire, getting the consoles to handle two controllers in a single slot wasnt childs play either. By thoughtfully using a multiplexer, which toggles multiple data lines to be toggled with a switch. With switcher soldered to the mainboard, he was able to slit them up and use as a single controller place in two arms of the crab. This functional crab-shaped PS One console comprises 56 3D printed parts, an original motherboard, and wiring in seven different colors. And features a customized circuit board with a mode switch that activates the controller. Gizmodo asked GingerOfOz, if he was willing to share the CAD files to let others 3D print their own Playstacean; he confirmed that he is unwilling to share anything currently. The post YouTuber custom builds fully functional crab-shaped PS One with movable arms for controller first appeared on Yanko Design.
