• Netflixs Dead Talents Society is the spiritual successor Beetlejuice really needed
    www.polygon.com
For fans of Tim Burtons 1998 comedy Beetlejuice, the 2024 sequel Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is a fun exercise in nostalgia, reuniting characters who havent been on the big screen in 35 years. Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, and Catherine OHara revive and evolve their roles from the first movie, even if their characters are underserved and neglected. But Beetlejuice 2 is mostly an exercise in echoing the past: Whats missing is the shock and surprise that came with the first movie, the sense of innovation, novelty, and subversive humor, and the wholly unique world-building around the exasperations of the afterlife. When we award the Polygon Recommends badge, its because we believe the recipient is uniquely thought-provoking, entertaining, inventive, or fun and worth fitting into your schedule. If you want curated lists of our favorite media, check out What to Play and What to Watch. For all those elements, Beetlejuice fans should turn to the horror-comedy Dead Talents Society, now streaming on Netflix.Director John Hsu (the video game superfan behind 2019s screen adaptation of Detention) channels a wide enough variety of elements in Dead Talents Society to keep viewers guessing, and ensures the social satire will feel different almost from scene to scene. Whether hes lampooning talk shows, influencer personas and videos, lifestyle reality TV, competition shows, or ghost-chaser programs, though, every story thread comes back to a handful of ghosts pursuing fame and fortune and avoiding oblivion by trying to become urban legends.Reigning ghostress superstar Catherine (Sandrine Pinna) has earned Golden Ghost awards and wide acclaim as the contortionist diva behind a classic hotel haunting. But her protg Jessica (Eleven Yao) has recently surpassed her with a fresh new innovation in scaring mortals: a viral internet video that lets Jessica jump out of peoples computers to scare the crap out of them. As their rivalry heats up, a freshly dead young woman identified as The Rookie (Gingle Wang) enters the mix, but finds she lacks the presence or confidence to scare people.Rookies failure at ghost auditions and her cringey, half-hearted haunting attempts leave her existence at risk. Ghosts are tied to the living world through significant objects, and hers has been lost, so soon shell fade into nothing. She can only continue on in the afterlife if she proves profitable to a predatory scare-generating corporation, which will give her a pass to continue interacting with the world of the living. The focus on scares as a form of currency and successful scarers as the worlds biggest celebrities hearkens back to Pixars animated favorite Monsters, Inc., but Hsu and co-writer Tsai Kun-Lin are referencing a lot more than that. Drawing equally on real urban legends, decades of Asian horror cinema, viral online videos, pop-idol videos, and reality TV, they veer from one silly mode to the other with manic abandon. They follow the three-way competition between Catherine, Jessica, and Rookie through a variety of lenses, as if its mostly a series of TV shows other ghosts are watching. Its a chaotic approach, but also a high-energy one, packed with goofy gags and referential imagery, from the mumbling hair-in-face ghostress who evokes movies like The Ring and Ju-On: The Grudge to Jessicas fluffy red dress, taken from the final act of Satoshi Kons anime classic Perfect Blue. Dead Talents Society is simultaneously a media satire and an underdog story, as Rookie teams up with a group of misfits led by grimly positive talent agent Makoto (Chen Bolin). Together, they try to save Catherines career, beat the smirking, patronizing Jessica, and keep Rookie from oblivion. The stakes sound high, but Hsus approach of framing the biggest action sequences as reality competition shows or prank shows gives the whole movie an agreeably light, goofy tone and lets it operate at breakneck speed. Good horror-comedy is hard to pull off, but Hsu finds his balance by steering hard into the comedy, while pouring on the fake blood. There are messages at work here about how so many people these days are hungry to be seen, but can only get attention online by chasing trends and employing gimmicks, leaving any recognition and applause they get feeling a little hollow and lonely. But the movie never hits those notes hard enough to make them maudlin, any more than Beetlejuice feels like a serious exploration of loneliness and loss for gothy teenager Lydia. Rookies feelings of frustration and fear are authentic enough to give the movie a little sympathetic warmth.Instead, Hsus film channels some of Burtons empathy for the alienated and outcast, alongside his early-career rambunctious weirdness, while mixing in a fair bit of media satire and digs at influencer culture. Without feeling imitative or indebted to Burtons world, Hsu and Tsai Kun-Lin arrive at a similar place, where one of the biggest frustrations of being dead is how much the afterlife resembles actual life, albeit through a twisted funhouse mirror that turns the whole story into an agreeable carnival ride.Dead Talents Society is now streaming on Netflix.

  • The Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra Is $253 Off Right Now

We may earn a commission from links on this page. Deal pricing and availability subject to change after time of publication. If you need a sturdy watch to meet all your athletic and adventurous needs, good news: You can save big right now on the LTE Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra. The watch is currently 39% off during Amazon's Big Spring Sale. Normally priced at $649.99, the current discount brings the smartwatch down to $396.94. This is as low a price as this watch ever gets, according to price-tracking tools. Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra $394.00 at Amazon $649.99 Save $255.99 Get Deal Get Deal $394.00 at Amazon $649.99 Save $255.99 Samsung announced the Galaxy Watch Ultra last summer, marketing it as competition for the Apple Watch Ultrawith an emphasis on outdoor and exercise features. And as Lifehacker's deals expert Daniel Oropeza explains, the Galaxy Watch Ultra does in fact excel in those areas above other watches. The watch is built to weather tough conditions. It's made out of Grade 4 titanium, and has an IP68 water- and dust-resistant rating. You can also take it up high altitudes (up to 9,000 meters), and it can withstand up to 10ATM of pressure (about 330 feet underwater). There's also a built-in siren option, which you can set to go off in case of emergencies. And since this watch uses LTE, you don't rely on wifi or Bluetooth for a satellite signal. And yes, you can take calls on it. Another huge perk: battery power. If you don't use any power-saving modes, it'll last 60 hours, but it can go up to 100 hours if you're conservative. However, if you're not looking for a rugged (read: big) smartwatch, then the biggest downside is that the Galaxy Ultra only comes in one size, 47mm. The 1.47-inch Super AMOLED display is brighter than previous Samsung AMOLED smartwatches.Shopping for tech? Lifehacker can help you make the right decision. • Amazon Spring Sale Apple deals: Get the Series 10 Watch for $100 off
    www.engadget.com
It's your lucky day if you're looking for good deals on Apple devices. Thanks to the Amazon Spring Sale, the Apple Watch Series 10 has dropped to its lowest price to date. The smartwatch is back on sale for a record-low price of $299. That's a $100 discount. The Apple Watch SE got a discount too. The device typically retails for $249, but you can snap it up for $169. The Apple Watch Series 10 is our pick for the best smartwatch overall. That may not necessarily apply if you're an Android user, since you need an iPhone to actually use an Apple Watch. In any case, we gave the Apple Watch Series 10 a score of 90 in our review. Apple's current flagship smartwatch has a bigger screen, making it easier to see your notifications and health data (it's a pretty dang great device for wellness and fitness tracking). The thinner frame makes it more aesthetically pleasing too. On the downside, losing the blood oxygen feature from previous models is a bummer, but that issue was out of Apple's hands to a certain extent. It's perhaps not quite worth an upgrade if you have a Series 8 or 9 already. Apple isn't exactly reinventing the wheel here. Plus the sleep apnea detection feature that debuted alongside the Series 10 is also available on the Series 9 and Ultra 2. Still, if you're an Apple Watch newcomer or upgrading from an even older model, the Series 10 is likely your best option, especially for the sake of future proofing. It also disassembles easily for storage making its lack of base less of a deal breaker. Apple Watch Series 10 for $299 ($100 off): Apples flagship wearable is the best smartwatch you can buy, period. While the Series 10 was an iterative update, thats not necessarily a bad thing. It sports a slightly longer battery life, a slimmer design and wide-angle OLED screen for better viewing angles. It tracks workouts accurately and delivers alerts to your wrist efficiently. Mac mini M4 for $499 ($100 off): If you're on the market for a new desktop, the upgraded M4 Mac mini is one that wont take up too much space, but will provide a ton of power at the same time. Apple AirTags (4-pack) for $70 ($29 off): These are the best Bluetooth trackers for iPhone users thanks to their vast finding network and accurate ultra wideband features for locating your things when theyre close by. They can even work as a hearing aid, though their six-hour battery life still isnt the best, and you should only get them if youre all-in on Apple hardware. If thats the case, though, we call them the best choice for iPhone owners in our wireless earbuds buying guide. We saw this pair drop as low as $154 back in December, but this deal comes within a dollar of its best price since then. AirPods Max (USB-C) for $480 ($70 off): If youre looking for over-ear headphones with all of the conveniences of in-ear AirPods, the AirPods Max are one of your only options (with the others being Beats devices). Its compatible with the first-gen Apple Pencil and the keyboard folio, plus we found it to have solid performance and a matching battery life. Beats Studio Pro for $180 (49 percent off): These Beats headphones have improved sound quality, good Transparency mode and USB-C charging, plus decent mic quality for phone calls. They support wired USB-C audio, plus they have solid ANC as well. Beats Fit Pro for $169 (15 percent off): These are the best wireless earbuds for working out thanks to their comfortable, secure fit, good sound quality with thumping bass and handful of convenient features provided by Apple's H1 chipset. It provides quick-pairing and switching between Apple devices (and quick pairing with Android phones), Find My compatibility and hands-free Siri. Chipolo One for $20 ($5 off): The Chipolo One is the top overall pick in our guide to the best Bluetooth trackers. While Apples AirTag can tap into a substantially larger crowd-sourcing network, weve found the One to send separation alerts faster when youve left an item behind and ring louder when youre back in its vicinity. Blink Mini 2 for $20 (50 percent off): Blink's latest wired, indoor security camera is one of our favorites, particularly if you're just starting out building a security camera system. It's easy to set up and use, and it works seamlessly with Amazon's Alexa. Plus, if you want a local storage option, you can buy the Blink Sync Module 2 and a thumb drive to store video clips locally. Audible (three months) for $3 ($42 off): This deal gives you access to Audible Premium Plus, which includes one credit each month that you can spend on any book you'd like, along with listening access to thousands of other books, podcasts and Audible Originals. You also get to take part in Audible's exclusive member sales. iRobot Roomba Combo Vac and Mop for $149 (45 percent off): This "essential" Roomba is relatively no-frills, but it has the added benefit of being a mopping robot in addition to a vacuum. It includes a washable mopping pad and a water reservoir so you can clean hard floors, and it will autonomously vacuum just like all of iRobot's other basic robovacs. Eufy 3-in-1 E20 robot vacuum for $400 ($200 off): If you cant decide between a robot vacuum or a lightweight stick vac, you dont have to. The new Eufy E20 combines a robo vac, cordless upright and handheld vacuum in one machine. Plus the automatically emptying base holds a lot of debris for its size. While we found the robot performance to be better than the stick vac suction, its still impressive and convenient for an all-in-one model. Cosori 9-in-1 air fryer for $90 ($30 off): One of our favorites in our best air fryers guide, this Cosori model has nine preset cooking modes and a spacious cooking basket that can handle more food at once than you might expect. It's not too large, so it can sit on your countertop all the time, and the basket has a safety release button that prevents accidental pulls. Levoit Core 400S air purifier for $190 ($30 off with coupon): Our top pick for the best air purifier for most people, the Core 400S has easy-to-use onboard controls, powerful filtering technology that isn't too loud and relatively affordable replacement filters. It reliably improved air quality in our testing, and even though its mobile app is a little overstuffed, it gives you another way to control and monitor the device. TP-Link Deco XE75 Pro mesh Wi-Fi system for $280 (30 percent off): Our current pick for the best mesh Wi-Fi system you can get, this TP-Link bundle may be no-frills, but it gets the job done nicely. It's easy to set up and provides excellent Wi-Fi 6E performance, plus the three included nodes can cover up to 7,200 square feet. Samsung Evo Select microSD card (512GB) for $35 ($5 off): A value pick in our best microSD cards guide, this Evo Select card provides respectable read and write speeds, and it comes with a full-sized adapter. Samsung T7 portable SSD (2TB) for $140 (48 percent off): We're on the T9 series now, but if you're looking to save a bit of cash, the T7 remains a great option for on-the-go storage. It supports read and write speeds up to 1,050/1,000 MB/s and sports a pocket-friendly design. Amazon Spring Sale FAQs When is the Amazon Spring Sale? • Nvidia-backed CoreWeave slashes IPO size and price amid investor concerns
    www.fastcompany.com
CoreWeave plans to reduce the size of its U.S. initial public offering and price its shares below the indicated range, a person familiar with the matter told Reuters on Thursday, dampening expectations that the listing would boost investor appetite for IPOs.The Nvidia-backed cloud services provider is now looking to sell 37.5 million shares, 23.5% less than originally planned, and price them at $40 apiece, well below even the low end of the indicated range, the source added, requesting anonymity discussing confidential information.Nvidia will anchor the CoreWeave IPO at the price with a $250 million order, the source said. The sale would raise about $1.5 billion and value CoreWeave at about $23 billion on a fully diluted basis, according to Reuters calculations. The company did not immediately respond to Reuters request for comment. It is expected to price the IPO later on Thursday.CoreWeaves roadshow, which began last week, received a weaker-than-expected reception as risk-averse investors in a volatile market weighed concerns over the companys long-term growth, financial risks and capital intensity, according to four sources familiar with the matter.Among the concerns is CoreWeaves heavy reliance on Microsoft, whose shifting AI datacenter strategy could impact long-term demand for chips known as graphics processing units, or GPUs. While investors appear comfortable with the companys high leverage since it has strong free cash flow, the risk of commitments not being fulfilled remains a worry.Additionally, CoreWeaves capital-intensive business model raises questions about sustainability, adding to broader market uncertainty.CoreWeave has been a significant customer for Nvidia, deploying over 250,000 of Nvidias GPUs by the end of 2024. Investors lukewarm reception to the CoreWeave IPO could signal reduced confidence in the AI infrastructure market, as the scaling of GPU assets in AI training slows down. The business model doesnt appear fundamentally flawed, but this suggests investors are recalibrating AI infrastructure valuations, said Lukas Muehlbauer, research analyst at IPOX.CoreWeave and some existing investors had initially aimed to sell 49 million shares in the offering priced between $47 and $55 each to raise as much as $2.7 billion. That would have valued the company at up to $32 billion on a fully diluted basis.Mounting concernsCoreWeaves stock market debut has been closely watched as a test of the strength of a recovery in the U.S. IPO market and whether investor enthusiasm for AI newcomers remains strong or has started to wane. The number of U.S.-listed equity capital markets deals, including both IPOs and block trades of shares, fell to 187 in the first three months of this year, down from 243 during the same period last year, according to Dealogic data through Wednesday. The total value of these transactions also dipped, falling from $74.02 billion to $63.48 billion.Despite the AI boom, there are growing concerns that data center spending will be uneven, with investments concentrated among a few giants while others struggle to keep pace.DeepSeek, Chinas low-cost AI rival, has also emerged as a growing threat, fueling concerns about pressure on data center spending.CoreWeave had debt of about $8 billion as of last year. It also leases its 32 data centers and some equipment, instead of owning them, resulting in operating lease liabilities of $2.6 billion. In its offering filing, the company had said about $1 billion of the IPO proceeds would be used to pay down debt. The company has said it would continue to borrow.CoreWeave has yet to turn a profit, and IPO investors in the last few years have been wary of backing companies with no history of profitability.Ahead of its IPO, CoreWeave secured partnerships with major AI players, including Sam Altmans OpenAI. Earlier this month, it signed an $11.9 billion infrastructure deal with the ChatGPT maker. The cloud services provider, which offers access to data centers and high-powered Nvidia chips for AI workloads, will also issue $350 million in shares to OpenAI through a private placement as part of the offering.Morgan Stanley, J.P. Morgan and Goldman Sachs are the lead underwriters of the IPO.The downsizing was first reported by Semafor on Thursday.Echo Wang, Krystal Hu, Milana Vinn, Manya Saini, Niket Nishant, and Ateev Bhandari, Reuters

  • Why Tesla may be spared from Trumps auto tariffs
    www.fastcompany.com
As the global auto world reeled from the potential fallout of Donald Trumps new auto tariffs, one name stood out as less affected than otherselectric-vehicle maker Tesla. The Texas-based companys shares were the rare automotive stock to trade in the green in U.S. action, as analysts said Teslas supply chain and financial performance may not be affected by the wide-ranging levies that will affect global shipments of both cars and car parts to the United States, mainly due to the companys largely domestic production.Still, that relief in the United States, where Elon Musk has become one of President Trumps primary advisers, tasked with swiftly cutting federal spending, may not improve the brands reputation worldwide.Tesla shares have plunged more than 40% since peaking in mid-December as a protest movement against the EV company has erupted in the U.S. and around the world as the Musk-led Department of Government Efficiency has drawn heavy criticism for going after federal workers. The stock was up about 2% on Thursday. The 25% tariffs are expected to disrupt the global automotive industry, raise the cost of vehicles in the United States, and pinch automakers earnings. Shares of Ford, General Motors and Chrysler-parent Stellantis were down between 2.1% and 7%.While Tesla does import some parts from around the world, the company largely produces its vehicles in the United States. Analysts expect Tesla to report deliveries of about 398,000 vehicles when it reports figures for the first quarter next week, according to 20 analysts polled by Visible Alpha.Trump said the duties announced on Wednesday could be net neutral or even good for Tesla, adding that his close ally Musk did not advise him regarding auto tariffs.Several administration officials have defended Tesla in public comments in recent days, ranging from urging people to buy its stock to opening investigations into vandalism at Tesla dealerships.Still, Musk late on Wednesday said, To be clear, this will affect the price of parts in Tesla cars that come from other countries. The cost impact is not trivial.Tesla imports lithium-ion batteries from Chinas Contemporary Amperex Technology Ltd and other automotive parts from countries such as South Korea, Japan and Mexico, according to import filing data through the end of February provided to Reuters by ImportYeti.Car prices could rise by $5,000 to $15,000 if a 25% tariff on imported cars is maintained, according to Goldman Sachs.Automakers are likely to pass on the impact of tariffs to customers by raising prices, and that could close the price gap between Teslas electric vehicles and competing gas-powered cars, analysts said.Tesla is a relative beneficiary given 100% U.S. production footprint, substantial U.S. sourcing and with Model Y competing in a midsize crossover segment where close to ~50% of vehicles could be subject to tariffs, TD Cowen analysts said in a note. While Trumps tariffs may benefit Tesla in the United States, the automaker faces mounting challenges in Europe and Canada, where political sentiment and reduced electric vehicle incentives are eroding its competitive position. In Britain and the European Union, Tesla is grappling with policy headwinds and shrinking subsidies that threaten to dampen demand and slow its growth trajectory. Canada has frozen a rebate program for Teslas.Musks involvement with Trump might be a factor weighing on sales outlook outside of the United States, Sandeep Rao, senior researcher at Leverage Shares, said.Akash Sriram, Arsheeya Bajwa and Richa Naidu, Reuters
