Nintendo accidentally confirms upgraded Switch 1 games for Switch 2Michael BeckwithPublished March 27, 2025 6:43pmUpdated March 27, 2025 6:43pm Does Metroid Prime 4 come in two flavours: Switch 1 and Switch 2? (Nintendo)A next gen version of Metroid Prime 4 just became much more likely, as an official Nintendo web page says Switch 2 Edition games will be a thing. While the Nintendo Switch 2 is confirmed to have backwards compatibility, ensuring most Switch 1 games can run on the new hardware, its suspected that some Switch games could see enhanced Switch 2 versions as well.Metroid Prime 4: Beyond is at the centre of this theory. Despite only being confirmed for Switch 1, the graphics seen in the newest trailer seem to be too good for it not to be running on more powerful hardware.Nintendo will hopefully provide a more concrete answer soon (probably at next weeks Switch 2 showcase) but, in the meantime, it has let slip that enhanced versions of certain games are indeed in the pipeline. The information comes courtesy of the web page for the virtual game cards announced in Thursdays Nintendo Direct, which are designed to allow Switch owners to more easily share their digital games with Nintendo Account family group members and other Switch consoles.Tucked away at the very bottom is some fine print that mentions how Switch 2 exclusive games will only work on Switch 2, effectively confirming that theyll be getting these virtual game cards too.All that is as youd expect, but Nintendo says this also applies to Nintendo Switch 2 Edition games. You can see it for yourself on the web page but, just in case, weve included a screenshot should Nintendo delete that text by the time you read this.We struggle to think what else a Nintendo Switch 2 Edition game could be, except an enhanced port of a Switch 1 game, designed exclusively for the Switch 2. And if Nintendo has an official name for it, that points to there being multiple examples of it. Nintendo probably didnt mean to reveal this year (Nintendo)Metroid Prime 4: Beyond is the most obvious example. Aside from the graphics, Nintendo remains coy about giving it an exact release date, which could point to the company wanting to wait until it confirms the games presence on Switch 2, making it a cross-gen title. The same could be said for Pokmon Legends Z-A, which is due for Switch 1 in late 2025. But then again, its also been claimed that there are no plans to bring any Pokmon games to Switch 2 this year.More TrendingIt is possible that some Switch 1 games will simply run better when played on Switch 2. Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition, for example, was discovered to have a hidden 60fps mode that doesnt work on such, but may well do so on Switch 2.But Nintendo Switch 2 Edition games (complete with a capital E) sounds like something Nintendo intends to put in promotional material, highlighting how such games arent simple re-releases but dedicated Switch 2 versions with new bells and whistles.Considering how Nintendo has treated Wii U ports over the last eight years it must seem very tempting for them to create Switch 2 Editions for many of their most prominent Switch 1 titles. How this will work if you own an original copy of the game remains to be seen but, rather than being free, its much more likely it involves some kind of fee. • The new Metroid Prime 4 trailer has the best Switch graphics ever

The new Metroid Prime 4 trailer has the best Switch graphics everGameCentralPublished March 27, 2025 4:59pmUpdated March 27, 2025 5:00pm This is the newly revealed box art for the game (Nintendo)A new trailer for Metroid Prime 4 has revealed the first details of the plot and some new gameplay mechanics, but not whether therell be a native Switch 2 version.Thursdays Nintendo Direct, for the original Switch, was strange for any number of reasons, not least because that the long-anticipated Switch 2 Direct is only next week. That and the fact that the most notable new announcements were two former PlayStation exclusives coming to Switch and the return of two super obscure Nintendo franchises. If there was one game that was almost certain to be featured though it was Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, which many suspect will be a launch title for the Switch 2 if only via backwards compatibility. The Nintendo Direct did nothing to discredit that theory, as the game still doesnt have a release date, just sometime this year. But theres still no hint of whether it will have a dedicated Switch 2 version, as well as a Switch 1 edition. It was the Switch 1 version that was apparently being shown in the new trailer, but the graphics looked so good many suspect, just as they did with the debut trailer, that its really Switch 2 footage.Thats presumably not the case Nintendo is very unlikely to outright lie about such a thing but the game look considerably better than any other Switch title, including the likes of Luigis Mansion 3.Its possible the footage being shown is the Switch 2 playing the Switch 1 version, and adding some enhancements on top but, again, if that was the case Nintendo would probably just say so.Apart from looking amazing, the main thing to be discerned from the trailer is that the plot of the game involves Samus being trapped on the jungle planet of Viewros. The previous trailer clearly showed space pirates, and rival bounty hunter Sylux, but in this one it was just angry alien lifeforms. The footage was likely from the opening sections of the game, before the main plot kicks in, but it did reveal one of the games main new gimmicks: psychic powers for Samus.Whether that means she has her usual gadgets from the start isnt clear, but her abilities involve operate alien mechanisms, opening doors, and controlling the trajectory of her beam weapons. So basically, she can use the Force now.The end of the trailer shows what we think is Samus in a new red and black suit. It could conceivably be one of the various evil versions of Samus, that have been in previous games, but we think it was just meant to be a new suit although it was unclear what new abilities it might confer.Apart from the psychic abilities the trailer didnt reveal much, other than that the game continues to look incredible, so whether well get additional information next week, at the Switch 2 Direct, is unclear. What does the Pokmon Legends: Z-A name mean? The only other big name first party game during the Direct was Pokmon Legends: Z-A, which was a bit of a surprise, as usually new games are only shown off during dedicated Pokmon Presents showcases.More TrendingZ-A continues to look good, with the semi real-time combat being an interesting twist to the formula. As with Metroid, there wasnt an awful lot of significant new information, but Nintendo did reveal that at night youll be able to battle with other trainers. This is when you can compete in the Z-A Royale tournament, where you work up the ranks from Z to A, with anyone that goes all the way having their wish granted. However, if your wish is a native Switch 2 version its unclear if that will be granted. As with Metroid Prime 4 there was no indication that thered be a dedicated next gen edition, and it may be that both games only work on Switch 2 via backwards compatibility. • ChatGPTs Studio Ghibli AI Art Trend Is an Insult to Life Itself
    gizmodo.com
In the past, OpenAI has explicitly refrained from allowing users to create prompts and generate images mimicking Studio Ghiblis art style to avoid potential copyright lawsuits from the anime giant. That is, until the company released a new ChatGPT update earlier this week touting its technological ability to create more precise, accurate, photorealistic outputs. The update has led to an online trend where folks are posting AI-generated images using OpenAI to transform themselves into characters from Ghibli films, like Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, and My Neighbor Totoro. Building on that, ChatGPTs new update has meant verified accounts on X/Twitter have been smarmily patting OpenAI on the back for how its new update is democratizing animation by shitting out prompts transforming photos of their weddings and whatnot into something that Ghibli could have created. Whats worse, OpenAI appears to be leaning into the farcical fad despite its previous reservations. On Wednesday, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman appeared to have cosigned the trend by changing his profile picture to a ChatGPT AI-generated image of himself as a Ghibli character. In a post on his official X/Twitter account, Altman wrote > be me / > grind for a decade trying to help make superintelligence to cure cancer or whatever / > mostly no one cares for first 7.5 years, then for 2.5 years everyone hates you for everything / > wake up one day to hundreds of messages: look i made you into a twink ghibli style haha.' This also happened Wednesday: The underlying issue in this entire situation is how AI initiatives like the one mentioned above reflect breathless tech bro sentiments about AI democratizing art by enabling anyone to input a prompt and receive an image in a distinctive art style. Art styles professional animators put years of work into mastering. It is also the latest (and arguably the most brazen) example of copyright infringement that AI is posing against the professional artists and voice actors who are battling for protections from shit like this. The whole affair is made exceedingly worse when you consider the official White House X/Twitter account jumping on the trend, posting Ghibli-fied images to dehumanize people in President Donald Trumps massive deportation campaign. While Studio Ghibli has yet to issue an official comment or announce legal action against OpenAIs new update being used to generate images in its art style, famed animator Hayao Miyazaki has already made his feelings explicitly clear about AI: he despises it. In NHKs 2016 documentary, Never-Ending Man, a production intern showed Miyazaki a demonstration (using deep learning AI) of a dismembered zombie using its head to wriggle across the floor. After a pregnant pause, Miyazaki provided feedback on the video in the form of an anecdote, leading to the meme of him calling it, An insult to life itself. Let me just say every morning I used to see a friend whos disabled. He would walk up to me. One legs turned outward, so its hard for him to walk. Even a high-five is hard for him. His stiff hand and mine touch. I think of him, and cant say I like this, Miyazaki said. Whoever made it gives no thought to pain. Its very unpleasant. You can make horrible things if you want, but I want nothing to do with it.Miyazaki wanting nothing to do with AI is pretty understandable considering the labor he and his animators put into making scenes in their feature films as awe inspiring as they are. Theres no greater example of this Herculean effort than a clip from NHKs 10 Years with Hayao Miyazaki documentary, which made the rounds online shortly following the Ghibli AI animation trend. The video, which shows a four-second clip of a busy crowd in Wind Rises, took animator Eiji Yamamori 15 months to complete. When Yamamori downplayed Miyazaki telling him good job, saying Its so short though, Miyazaki responded in kind saying, But it was worth it. Should Ghibli and Miyazaki wish to pursue legal action against OpenAI and ChatGPT, well bring the popcorn. Want more io9 news? • Garmins New Paid Tier Is Filled With AI, but Actually Seems Useful
    gizmodo.com
If theres anything weve been learning these last couple of months, all good things must end. Fortunately, Garmin isnt putting an end to its free tier, but it is introducing a premium plan called Garmin Connect+. The perks will sound familiar if you subscribe to apps like Strava. And because its 2025, the paid features added to Garmin Connect+ all have something to do with AI. For $7/month or $70/year, Garmin Connect+ will unlock personalized Active Intelligence insights, which seems to be Garmins attempt at a moniker for AI offerings. These features include suggestions based on your health and activity data history, a performance dashboard to compare your progress, and training guidance for runners and cyclists. The subscription also includes bonus LiveTrack notifications so that trusted family and friends know youve started a run, plus some unique social features, including special badges for completing activity challenges. The company clarifies in its press release that this is about growing its platform. Garmin is competing with other fitness and training apps, like Strava, which offers many of the same features for nearly double the price of Garmins offering. And while longtime Garmin users may be disappointed to hear the brand embracing a trend were all barreling toward, at least this one offers useful features. AI can be a hard sell right now because of general consumer reluctance, but its not as gimmicky as it may sound in the fitness world. I use Stravas AI summaries and find them informative and encouraging, as the bot always positively spins the fact that I did any activity at all. But Strava costs me $12/month, which is a ton for someone who isnt hiking more than four miles a week. Garmins cheaper subscription price is already making me consider jumping ship to save on the cash. Garmin users can sign up for a 30-day trial to try out the features before opting in. Or, if youre already in the Garmin ecosystem, you can ignore it all and stick with the free health data and abilities already offered, including performance metrics and buildable courses for rides and runs.

LUM House / Caz ZegersSave this picture! Cristbal PalmaArchitects: Caz ZegersAreaArea of this architecture projectArea:227 mYearCompletion year of this architecture project Year: 2022 PhotographsPhotographs:Cristbal PalmaSave this picture!Text description provided by the architects. The owners, a middle-aged couple living in the countryside working with plants and essential oils, are at the origin of the concept design for this house. The husband, a person of great humor, named the house La Ultima Morada, therefore LUM. The name translates in English as: Last Resting Place, but LUM works only in Spanish. He also had an idea of the form, and they planted and created the garden on site, so I used his ideas and the garden as a starting point.Save this picture! The spirals observed in plant growth and described by the Italian mathematician Leonardo Pisano Fibonacci (1140-1270), inspired the spiral proportions of the garden and the site placement of the house. It is a serpentine pavilion related to the sunrise for the wifes morning meditation, and all astrological phenomena like the rising full moon and its relationship with the distant hills.Save this picture!Save this picture! Each of these natural situations becomes a rite in their daily lives. In these everyday rituals connected to nature, the garden, and the space allow them to enjoy life in a loving and substantial way, The volume winds over a rock garden, created with Precolombian ceremonial rocks protected by a semicircular rock fence and a layer of quartz, creating an intimate living space, that centers on the axis of the primary Fibonacci curve of the house. The second curve, centered on the axis of the front yard garden, gives space to the entrance, located between the Studio and house.Save this picture! In this way, the living area and bedroom can be used as a continuous private space if there are guests. The roof controls the architecture curves, defining the volume with a diagonal ridge from one extreme to the opposite, creating a compact volume reinforced by the timber deck over the walls and roof. The interior walls are also worked as long curving lines. Hence, doors become invisible to reinforce the power of space, a tension that runs from the studio area located in the south to the main bedroom at the other end of the space.Save this picture! The use of cardinal directions is another request of owners. This was not the best solution for the solar control of solar gain and climate efficiency, but it was an important issue for them. The area tends to flood in winter, so the entire volume was raised forty centimeters above ground level, a practical solution that also creates a floating space opening to the landscape. Columns supporting the roof come directly from the ground, supporting terraces from the outside, reinforcing the architectural idea of the floating pavilion.Save this picture!Save this picture! The project is sustainable and low budget. The effort was put into confirming the energy performance of the walls, floors, and roof layers, using Passivhaus solutions, and protecting them from the sun with externally covered corridors. These passageways also form an intermediate space open to the east and west. The quartz rock garden in the west, facing the sunset, was not a good solution in terms of climate efficiency, but articulating the desires of the owners in an efficient and balanced way also ensures the coherence of the architecture.Save this picture!Project gallerySee allShow lessAbout this officeCaz ZegersOfficePublished on March 27, 2025Cite: "LUM House / Caz Zegers" [Casa LUM / Caz Zegers] 27 Mar 2025. • This 444 Million-Year-Old Arthropod Was Fossilized Inside Out
    www.discovermagazine.com
After 25 years of research, a 444-million-year-old inside-out fossil has finally been named. The fossil, which researchers at the University of Leicester have identified as a new species of multisegmented fossil, has been named Keurbos susanae, or Sue for short, after the lead researchers mom. And while its insides seem to have been well-preserved, researchers are still debating what this organism may have been. The researchers published their findings in the journal Palaeontology.Sue is an inside-out, legless, headless wonder. Remarkably, her insides are a mineralised time capsule: muscles, sinews, tendons, and even guts all preserved in unimaginable detail. And yet her durable carapace, legs, and head are missing lost to decay over 440 million years ago, Gabbott said in a press release. We are now sure she was a primitive marine arthropod, but her precise evolutionary relationships remain frustratingly elusive.Unearthing the Fossil Keurbos susanaeSarah Gabbott, the studys lead author and a professor in the School of Geography, Geology, and the Environment at the University of Leicester, first uncovered K. susanae about 25 years ago, at the start of her career. The fossil was in the Soom Shale, which is about 250 miles north of Cape Town, South Africa.Though it may have taken years of painstaking research, Gabbott finally had some answers about this mysterious fossil.According to the study, arthropods make up about 85 percent of the animals on Earth and include lobsters, shrimp, centipedes, and spiders, among others. Arthropods have an extensive fossil record dating back about 500 million years. However, researchers typically find their exterior fossilized; in the case of K. susanae, it was the opposite. The area where Gabbott uncovered K. susanae was once the ocean floor some 440 million years ago. Within what would have been a marine basin, it appeared that K. susanae may have taken refuge from the Ordovician-Silurian extinction (the Late Ordovician mass extinction (LOME)), the first of the big five mass extinctions.During this time, global temperature dropped as ice sheets grew and altered oceans. By the end of it, about 85 percent of Earths species were eradicated. From the fossil, researchers can tell that after K. susanae died, it was buried by extremely toxic sediment. In place of oxygen, the ocean was full of hydrogen sulfide, which the researchers believe may have caused the organism to fossilize inside out.A Fossil That's Difficult to IdentifyThough it is a fascinating feat that K. susanae has been fossilized inside out, the downside is that researchers arent sure what the exact species it is. Without the exterior, its difficult to compare this fossil to others in the fossil record from the same time period. On top of that, the quarry where Gabbott found the fossil is unlikely to yield any more specimens, though she hoped to one day find one that matched K. susane. Instead, shes shifting focus. This has been an ultramarathon of a research effort. In a large part because this fossil is just so beautifully preserved, theres so much anatomy there that needs interpreting, Gabbott said in a press release. Id always hoped to find new specimens, but it seems after 25 years of searching, this fossil is vanishingly rare so I can hang on no longer. Especially as recently, my mum said to me, Sarah, if you are going to name this fossil after me, youd better get on and do it before I am in the ground and fossilized myself.According to Gabbott, she would tell her mom shed name a fossil after her because shes a well-preserved specimen. But for Gabbott, the real reason was because her mom was the one who encouraged her to pursue a career she loved. In this case, its digging up fossils. • How Often Should You Wash Your Reusable Water Bottle? Studies Say Everyday
    www.discovermagazine.com
Whether it's the near infamous Stanley cups or the Naglene, covered in national park stickers, you likely have spotted reusable water bottles almost everywhere youve go. College campuses, cafes, the office, and of course, the gym or on a hiking trail.People carry reusable water bottles for a variety of reasons. Perhaps they want to reduce plastic waste or microplastic intake, or maybe they are trying to stay hydrated for health reasons. Regardless of the different reasons, there is one thing that reusable water bottle owners likely all do, and that is not wash their water bottles often enough.Studies have found that reusable water bottles carry a plethora of bacteria that could greatly impact your health. So, how often should you wash your water bottle? Are Bacteria Hiding in Reusable Water Bottles? After discovering biofilm in his water bottle, Carl Behnke, an associate professor at Purdue University, specializing in food safety, and colleagues conducted a study on reusable water bottles around campus. The study team analyzed the water bottles based on age, material, if they used a filter, and what sort of beverages the owners put in them (usually water, coffee, tea, and soda). The results of the 2017 study were as one might fear: Reusable water bottles were hotbeds for bacteria. Most of the bottles in this study had high to unsafe levels of bacteria in them. The team noted that filtered and non-filtered bottles had a similar amount of bacterial growth and that bottles used for beverages other than water had higher bacterial counts. They also found that material mattered when it came to a cleaner water bottle. As this study showed, among the four bottle materials examined (hard plastic, soft plastic, metal, and glass), glass bottles have the lowest reading of organic residue on the exterior surface. This might be attributed to the fact that glass is nonporous and easy to clean. Still, perhaps more importantly, it is easy to see when it is sufficiently clean, compared to plastic or metal bottles, the authors wrote in the study.Water Bottles Need to be Properly CleanedOf the Purdue study participants, nearly 85 percent claimed to wash their water bottles regularly, whether it be just a quick rinse or with soap and water. Of those who did wash their bottles, they only did so about once a month. However, a researcher from the University of Alabama at Birmingham notes that water bottles need to be washed more frequently and dried properly.Mold spores, which are ubiquitous in the environment, can settle on damp surfaces and begin to grow, Benjamin Turner, an instructor at the University of Alabamas Department of Biology, said in a statement. Additionally, if the water inside the bottle is not replaced regularly, organic matter from saliva or other contaminants can provide nutrients for mold to thrive. How to Clean Your Reusable Water BottleWhen it comes to cleaning your reusable water bottle, its something you may want to add to your daily routine. For best and cleanest results, follow the steps below:Use hot, soapy water to scrub the interior and exterior of the water bottle. Including any straws or mouthpieces you may use.Make sure to get all the hard-to-reach places where bacteria may grow, like in the lid.Rinse thoroughly.Once rinsed, you could use a food-safe sanitizing spray, like those used in restaurants, to kill any lingering bacteria.Lastly, let the bottle air dry completely before putting it away or filling it up again.Other tools, such as a bottle brush, can come in handy when sanitizing your water bottle or running it through the dishwasher if it is dishwasher safe. Another way to mitigate bacteria growth is to only keep water in your bottle instead of tea, coffee, or other beverages.
