• This Batman: The Animated Series Villain Is Perfect For His Own Horror Film
    gamerant.com
Batman: The Animated Series' depiction of the sympathetic villain Clayface is as grounded as it is horrifying. His showdown with Batman in the two-part special episode 'Feat of Clay' is one of the most spectacular fights in any Batman medium. Its story follows a similar arc to recent best picture nominee, The Substance, a film that is also powered by shocking body horror elements. Clayface will get his own R-rated feature film in 2026, which begins filming this summer, according to DC co-chiefs James Gunn and Peter Saffran.

  • Into Black announced for PS VR2
    blog.playstation.com
Picture yourself stranded alone on an alien planet. With no-one around to help, and no-one coming to the rescue, your only salvation lies in the endless darkness of a sprawling cave system. Would you dare face the dangers that lurk in the dark?Welcome to the world of Into Black, a VR action/exploration game about a deep space scavenger trying to repair his ship and escape a mysterious alien planet. You scour the caves for resources to upgrade your gear and rebuild your ship, all while fighting off hordes of deadly alien creatures. And while the game features a fully voice-acted story campaign, playable solo or in co-op with up to 3 friends, as well as a standalone battle royale mode, the true heart of Into Black is the sense of exploration as you navigate the darkness and uncover wonders and dangers beyond reckoning.PS VR2 owners will soon get to experience this sense of exploration first hand, but rest assured, this is no mere port. By utilising the power of the PS VR2 hardware, weve been able to reshape the world of Into Black into something truly next level.Let there be lightAs the name implies, so much of Into Black is about the interplay of light and dark as they explore the underground expanse, so much so that one of the first items we give players is a torch. That exploration is now much more vivid and alive with the use of real-time shadows.Sweep your torch over a prowling insectoid grunt, and see its spider-like silhouette thrown up against the cave wall behind it. Observe inadvertent puppet shows as your co-op crewmates dash around, each with their own torch throwing its own shadows. The immersive feel of shadows stretching out and parallaxing along the ground as you pass by cave openings, swinging your torch side to side as you look for valuable resources, is second to none. And of course, the other side of this equation is the darkness itself. New HDR lighting and volumetric effects, as well as the deeper blacks of the PS VR2 OLEDs, adds a richer sense of foreboding to the depths of the caves, and makes exploring them a true journey into the unknown. The Devil is in the detailsBut what is the point of ultra-realistic lighting if theres nothing to see when lit? Thats why the world of Into Black has also been given a full visual overhaul.Weve rebuilt the cave environments with a much higher geometric density, giving them gorgeous new depth and complexity, especially when seen in tandem with the improved lighting. Weve also enhanced the textures and detail maps, to give increased fidelity to the visuals. We also wanted to enhance the feeling of life in the caves, so we used some of the new processing power to dramatically increase the amount of atmospheric flora and fauna in the caves. Whether it be unidentified airborne creatures circling high overhead amongst the stalactites, fields of grass, or swarms of alien fish swimming through massive coral structures, the caves you are exploring are not only full of danger and treasure, but also life.Combine all this with higher resolution, eye-tracked foveation, and a smooth 90Hz refresh rate, and you have the cleanest, most striking version of Into Black yet.Once more, with feelingSure, visuals are great and all, but theres more to a game than just how it looks. All new headset haptics, and, most importantly, adaptive triggers of the Playstation VR Sense controllers offer a whole slew of new immersive capabilities for Into Black.Feel the impact of every pickaxe swing, and the kick of the shotgun blast. Get rocked by a swipe from a colossal rock golem, or by the errant throw of a buddys grenade. We all know the magic of VR is in the immersion, and with so many tactile feedback options now at our disposal, that feeling of being there is deeper than ever before.A little about usAs a veteran VR studio, The Binary Mill takes pride and joy in bringing fun and exciting experiences such as Rush, Mini Motor Racing X and Gun Club VR to enthusiasts of all types. Our previous game, the award-winning Resist (available on PS VR2 April 10) will also give PS VR2 players the ability to swing through a dystopian city and battle for the fate of humanity like never before. With Into Black we wanted to allow our players to feel the thrill of discovery. And with Into Black on PS VR2, we feel like weve truly delivered on that promise, and we hope youll join us on this journey into the unknown. You can wishlist Into Black today and be ready to descend into the depths when it launches on PlayStation VR2 soon!

  • Everything we know about Switch 2, Nintendos next-gen console
    www.polygon.com
After many months, if not years, of leaks and speculation, its finally official: Nintendo has announced its next console, and its called Nintendo Switch 2. As the name implies, its a very similar design to the Switch a hybrid handheld console with detachable controllers that can be connected to a TV via a dock. While it may seem an obvious move, this iterative handheld is an unusual strategy for Nintendo, which has often chosen to innovate with its new hardware, finding new control systems and new forms of play. But, with 146 million units sold after nearly eight years on the market, the Switch is Nintendos second most successful gaming system ever (after the Nintendo DS), and the third-bestselling console of all time. So perhaps its not surprising that the company decided, for once, that its previous console design wasnt broken and didnt need fixing. Also, Nintendo Switch 2 launches into a changed market where players have come to expect that they will be able to carry their game libraries forward from one machine to another, which precluded a radical change. However, after Nintendos quite minimal announcement video, many questions remain. Nintendo focused on the new hardware and only showed one new game, a new Mario Kart. It also refrained from announcing a firm release date or price for the Switch 2. And not all of the rumored features of the new system were addressed by Nintendos video. Heres everything we know and everything we think we know about Nintendos next console. What is the latest Switch 2 news?Nintendo has suggested that some Switch 1 games will be getting enhanced versions for Switch 2 or at least, versions that run natively on the Switch 2 console rather than through the backward compatibility layer. A footnote to an article about the new Virtual Game Card system made mention of Nintendo Switch 2 Edition games as distinct from Switch 2 exclusives. (It also appeared to confirm that the Switch 2 will also use the new Virtual Game Cards.) Read our full report.Additionally, as spotted by VGC, an image of the Switch 2 included in promotional materials for the new Nintendo Today app showed the new, extra button on the right Joy-Con clearly labelled with a C. The mysterious C button has been the subject of much speculation since it appeared in leaks and the mystery around it only deepened when, in the Switch 2 announcement video, it was blank and unlabeled. Now the C is officially back. But we still dont know what it stands for. What is Switch 2s release date?In its announcement video, Nintendo confirmed it would release the Switch 2 in 2025, but refrained from giving a more precise release date than that. At this stage, all we know for sure is that well be playing Switch 2 before the year is up. However, there have been strong indications that the wait wont be too long.Last year, Nikkei reported that Nintendo was targeting March 2025 in an effort to avoid hardware shortages and ensure a strong lineup of games but noted that a slip beyond March was possible. The former is clearly not happening, but a launch within the subsequent spring or summer months seems plausible. Nintendo unveiled the Switch in October 2016, debuted it to press and players in January 2017, and released it in March 2017. If the company follows the same timeline this time around which, given the early April timing of the Switch 2 Nintendo Direct and the Switch 2 Experience events rolling out all spring long, it seems to be were likely looking at a June 2025 release. What is Switch 2s price?Aside from the games lineup, this is the biggest unanswered question we have about the Switch 2. Nintendo revealed nothing about pricing in its announcement video. But the likelihood is that it will be more expensive than the Switch. The Switch launched at $299 in 2017, and its official sticker price hasnt dropped a single cent since. This is in line with the changing trends in pricing. Due to chip shortages, inflation, and the slowing pace of advances in tech, this generation of consoles has not come down in price the way previous generations did.In this environment, Nintendo will have to figure out how to package more advanced tech while keeping the price reasonable. The Switch 2 is unlikely to be priced any lower than $349, the current cost of an OLED Switch model. $399 seems like a safe bet the same price as the base Steam Deck. Any more than this and Nintendo will face uncomfortable comparisons to the new wave of PC handhelds (a Steam Deck OLED is $549; an Asus ROG Ally is $499) and risk pricing itself out of its traditional family market. There is also the question of whether the tariffs imposed by the U.S. on China in early February could impact the price of the Switch 2. On this score, it seems we might be in luck. Nintendo began manufacturing the Switch in Vietnam during the last Trump administration trade war with China, in 2019, and has plans to ramp up production at a new factory there. Nintendo could avoid the tariffs by using its Vietnamese production facilities to supply Switch 2 units to the U.S.What games will Switch 2 have?Nintendo chose not to confirm any games alongside the new console in its announcement video, although it did show a glimpse of what appears to be a new Mario Kart. So were still officially in the dark on the Switch 2s launch titles and its larger lineup. However, through a combination of leaks and informed speculation, we can make some good guesses.Despite extensive leaks about the console itself, Nintendo has somehow managed to avoid any of its own games leaking. But knowing what we do about internal development at Nintendo, we can make a few informed guesses:Mario Kart 9: This may not be what its called, but Nintendo showed a glimpse of what appears to be a new Mario Kart in the video. It looks familiar, but the setting shown is new to the series and perhaps looks like an open world? Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is the Switchs best-selling game, with an astonishing 64 million copies sold, so a new Mario Kart will be the perfect way to kick the Switch 2 era off with a bang.A new 3D Super Mario game: There hasnt been an entry in this series since 2017s Super Mario Odyssey, so the time seems ripe for a follow-up in the Switch 2s launch year.Metroid Prime 4: Beyond: One of Nintendos final major in-house productions for the Switch, slated for a 2025 release, looks like a perfect candidate for a cross-generation release, like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, which launched on Wii U as well as Switch.Pokmon Legends: Z-A: The latest Pokmon title also looks like a likely cross-gen title. In addition, a number of third-party titles have been rumored by leaker Nate the Hate and other sources. These are all recent hits on other platforms, or already-announced multiplatform titles, so while theyre all unconfirmed, it wouldnt be surprising if they came to Switch 2 early in its life.Final Fantasy 7 Remake and RebirthAssassins Creed Mirage and ShadowsMetal Gear Solid DeltaMicrosoft Flight Simulator 2024Halo: The Master Chief CollectionRed Dead Redemption 2Will Switch 2 be backward-compatible?Yes, the Switch 2 will be backward-compatible! Before it even officially announced the Switch 2, Nintendo confirmed that Switch software will also be playable on the successor to Nintendo Switch. It added that Nintendo Switch Online the online multiplayer service that also includes a large catalog of retro games will be available on the Switch 2, too. With many users hoping or outright expecting to carry forward their game libraries to Nintendos next console, as has become the norm with the latest generations of Xbox and PlayStation consoles, the news comes as a big relief. In the video, Nintendo underlined that the Switch 2 will play its own exclusive games and both physical and digital Nintendo Switch games, but it did warn that certain Nintendo Switch games may not be supported on or fully compatible with Nintendo Switch 2. It said it would share details on its website at a later date. While Nintendo has yet to specify exactly how backward compatibility will work, it did say that Nintendo Accounts will carry over to the new console, and that players would have access to Nintendo Switch software they currently own. Following Nintendos announcement of the new Virtual Game Card system, it now appears that the Switch 2 will support swapping Switch games with original Switch using this system. Mention was also made of Nintendo Switch 2 Edition games, suggesting some Switch games may get native, possibly enhanced versions for the Switch 2.Nintendo did not mention hardware backward compatibility. However, earlier reports, sourced from peripheral manufacturers, suggest that the Switch 2 will be backward-compatible with some Switch accessories, including the Pro Controller and Joy-Cons.What new features does Switch 2 have?As previously reported and now confirmed by Nintendos video, the Switch 2 features detachable Joy-Con controllers like the Switch. Reports and patents say that the Joy-Cons attach magnetically; the video didnt exactly confirm this, but it did suggest it. It has been reported that the Joy-Cons also have more reliable Hall-effect sticks, but this isnt confirmed by the video.Theres a new square button on the right Joy-Con, but we dont know the use of this yet. The Joy-Cons also feature a small optical sensor on their inner edge. A Nintendo patent appears to confirm this will allow for mouse-like controls, and the video did seem to suggest this with a sequence showing the Joy-Cons sliding around on their side in additional foot-like attachments. The console features a second USB-C port on its top, like the one on its lower edge for charging and connecting to its dock. This will allow it to be charged while its being used in tabletop mode, propped up on its new, U-shaped stand. But it could potentially be used to connect new accessories, like a camera or even a second screen.Switch 2 is bigger than its predecessor; Nintendo didnt give dimensions, but an 8-inch screen has been reported, and thats consistent with the video. (The original Switchs screen is 6.2 inches and the Switch OLED models is 7 inches.) How powerful will Switch 2 be? What are its tech specs?Nintendo has yet to announce any tech specs for the Switch 2. Based on reporting and leaks, it looks to be a capable device somewhere between a last-gen PlayStation 4 or Xbox One and the current Xbox Series S. The systems graphics processing unit is reportedly paired with custom, AI-powered Nvidia upscaling that should bring it surprisingly close to the performance of current-gen consoles like PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. In short, it should be able to run many current-generation AAA games if they are carefully ported over.Leaks seen by The Verge and shared online suggest that the Switch 2 may be more powerful when docked. The dock appears to have fan vents and a higher power rating than the undocked console, while the graphics processor can allegedly run at nearly twice the clock speed when docked. In combination with the upscaler, this might make 4K visuals when hooked up to a TV possible.According to Eurogamers and VGCs reporting on the behind-closed-doors Gamescom demos in August 2024, Nintendo showed hardware targeting the specs of the console running The Matrix Awakens Unreal Engine 5 tech demo with ray tracing enabled and visuals comparable to Sonys and Microsofts current-gen consoles. Reporting by Reuters and Digital Foundry suggests the console will use a custom Nvidia chip that will be capable of both ray tracing and DLSS.Customs and shipping data analyzed by fans seems to indicate that the Switch 2 will feature considerable upgrades in both RAM (from 4 GB to 12 GB) and internal storage (from 32 GB to 256 GB). According to an FCC filing, Wi-Fi will be upgraded to the Wi-Fi 6 standard (from Wi-Fi 5 in the original Switch). The Switch 2 will feature one tech downgrade, however: The console will reportedly feature an LCD screen, unlike the OLED screen seen in the current top-of-the-range Switch model, as a cost-cutting measure. Can you pre-order Switch 2?No, you cant pre-order the Switch 2 yet! But you may well be able to in April. Pre-orders for the original Switch opened when Nintendo made a full presentation of the console and its games to the press and public in January 2017 just two months before launch. If its following the same playbook, pre-orders may open alongside the Nintendo Direct on April 2.When will Nintendo reveal more about Switch 2?Nintendo has scheduled a Nintendo Direct all about the Switch 2 for April 2. This is when well probably learn everything we want to know about the machine: launch games, price, release date, and more about its features.Nintendo will also hold Nintendo Switch 2 Experience events around the world throughout April, where members of the public will be able to go hands-on with the machine. These events will take place cities around North America, Europe, Asia, and Australia.Polygon will continue to update this story as new details develop.

  • The Thai horror gem Operation Undead takes a big swing with its zombie twist
    www.polygon.com
Its easy for a genre as specific as zombie movies to start feeling repetitive, no matter how many micro-variations on the story directors have explored. Whether the undead are lumbering or sprinting, whether the plague was human-made or seemingly random, the general notes remain: a sudden apocalypse, loved ones separated, society crumbling, Brains!!! You get the picture.Enter Operation Undead, the 2024 Thai zombie movie from writer-director Kongkiat Komesiri, which is finally out digitally in the U.S. Komesiri has a unique spin on the genre: Its 1941, and a group of Thai junior soldiers have to contend with both the invading Japanese army and an outbreak of the undead. While combining the war and zombie genres isnt new (see: the very fun Overlord), Operation Undead stands out because its surprisingly thoughtful about war and the atrocities we inflict on each other, especially considering the premise and somewhat goofy title. In classic war-movie fashion, Operation Undead opens with the teenage antics of extremely immature junior soldiers, shortly before the invasion. After Komesiri immerses the audience in that group and their youthful exuberance for life and its pleasures, Operation Undead cranks the stakes from zero to 60 in a heartbeat: The Japanese army invades, and the biological weapon they brought with them escapes, causing a zombie outbreak in the boys village. But these arent standard zombies. They can speak and use tools, and they have memories and emotions. Unfortunately, they still have very little control over their hunger for flesh, leaving them in psychic torment as they commit atrocities. They regret their actions, tearing apart their victims with immense sadness on their faces, howling their despair into the wind. This allows Komesiri to bring in a particularly clever twist on the conventional zombie metaphors of capitalism and consumerism. Rather than mindless drones caught in cycles of consumption, these zombies are fully aware shells of themselves, robbed of their humanity and helpless to stop repeating the cycles of violence that caused this disaster in the first place. These zombies are cherishing fading memories, and reflecting on their hopes for the future that vanished when they turned.Komesiri got his start working for Thai master Apichatpong Weerasethakul, as a crew member on Mysterious Object at Noon. That influence shows, even in a movie that delivers on more conventional genre thrills like violence and gore: A sense of melancholy pervades Operation Undead, and strong themes of family loyalty and community shine through the bloody action. (Especially through the characters of two brothers caught on opposing sides of the conflict.) And yes, the action does get extremely bloody: The zombie effects are appropriately gross, with parts of their faces peeling or fully off, plenty of gore, and visual representations of parts of the skull that dont often turn up on screen.[Ed. note: Spoilers ahead for a major twist from the first act of Operation Undead. If you want to go in completely fresh, stop here but I think its very cool and worth discussing.]The boldest choice Komesiri makes is turning his principal group of teenage protagonists into zombies immediately after the invasion starts. Yes, like Warm Bodies and iZombie before it, Operation Undead makes zombies into primary protagonists. This deepens the movies themes by focusing on how war specifically robs young people of not only their lives, but their joy for living, and how cycles of violence perpetuate harm against both the perpetrators and innocents. Because the teens arent able to control their zombie desires, they tear apart Japanese soldiers and their fellow Thai villagers with equal viciousness.Operation Undead is a stellar new entry in the zombie-movie canon that takes some real big swings: It respects the genres roots and need for thrills while providing a strong emotional backbone. Its one of the standout horror movies of 2025 so far, and a must-watch for anyone interested in new twists on a tried-and-true genre formula.Operation Undead is available for digital rental or purchase on Fandango.

  • F5: Lise Vester on a Favorite Book, Neon Signs in Japan + More

When Lise Vester was completing her design school application, it marked a turning point in her life. Exploring an open-ended theme of family, she visited a hospice center. It was there that Vester experienced the concept of healing architecture, and also realized that she could merge her intuitive instincts with her passion to create something meaningful. Learning how design influences comfort in a space felt profound, and continues to inspire my work today, she says.A native of Denmark, Vester studied furniture design and business as an undergraduate. She had the support of her family, and met two key individuals, a gallerist and a lighting company design manager. The pair soon became informal mentors who were always there to offer advice and listen. Their support and encouragement helped to build Vesters confidence as she set out on her path.Lise VesterVester eventually headed to the Royal College of Art in London, where she earned a masters degree, then accepted jobs as a freelance designer for a range of companies, including Louis Poulsen. In 2022 she founded her eponymous studio based in Copenhagen. When Vester experiments with glass and light, her philosophy of form follows feelings is at the forefront. Her pieces are often playful and sculptural, with elements that spark curiosity and invite engagement. Whether her objects are for everyday use or artistic installations, Vester aims to craft experiences on both sensory and emotional levels.Even with plenty of projects on tap today, Vester has a romantic vision of her later years. She would love to spend hours crafting rings, necklaces, and other baubles in a cozy workshop. Jewelry fascinates me the stories it carries about identity, memories, and connections, she adds. I see jewelry as another way to tell stories through design.Today, Lise Vester joins us for Friday Five!Photo: Lise Vester1. Your Brain on Art book by Susan Magsamen and Ivy RossThis book resonates with my interest in Neuroaesthetics and our mind-brain-body relation. It dives into how art and design affect our brains and emotions, which is a constant theme in my work. Just like physical exercise lowers cortisol levels in our bodies, neuroscience can help inform us, how art affects our mental and physical health too. It also reminds me of Googles Making Sense of Color installation at Milan Design Week 2024, and their 2019 collaboration with Muuto, where they explored how differently designed spaces can evoke emotional responses.Photo: Lise Vester2. The camera itself shoots 4K video at 120fps, with a 1/1.3-inch sensor that handles low light better than most other action cams in this range. That means clearer shots at dusk or in shady spotsbasically, where cheaper cameras start to give up. The image stabilization is excellent and on par with GoPro, notes this PCMag review. You can run, bike, or strap it to your chest while snowboarding, and the footage'll be smooth. But theres no onboard storage, so youll need a microSD card. Not a dealbreaker, but something to know upfront. That said, this isnt the full Adventure Combo, so you dont get the extra batteries or the charging hub. For casual users, thats probably fine. But if youre looking to vlog or shoot for longer sessions, the add-ons might be worth budgeting for later. Its also waterproof to 59 feet, and the touchscreen works well even when wet. The DJI Osmo Action 4 camera pairs with your phone through DJIs app if you want to shoot remotely or transfer clips quickly. If youre already sitting on a GoPro setup, this wont do much to make you switch. But for first-time buyers or casual creators, this deal is about as low-risk as it gets.
