  • Billionaire utopian city launches new shipyard plan
    www.popsci.com
The new shipyard may be located near Rio Vista, California. Credit: Getty ImagesA group of Silicon Valley billionaires plan to construct a utopian city of yesterday remains on hold until at least 2026. In the meantime, California Forever is pursuing an alternative option for some of its 60,000 acres purchased through years of stealth real estate dealings. According to Rio Vista mayor Edwin Okamura, early discussions are underway to transform a portion of California Forevers land into a largescale shipbuilding port.A proposed site for this initiative is near Collinsvillean area long suspected as a potential port, Okamura wrote last week in a social media post. Preliminary conversations also included potential tax incentives, federal infrastructure funding, and immediate job creation. The Solano County town of Collinsville is located roughly 40 miles from San Francisco on the Sacramento River, which ultimately feeds into the Pacific Ocean. Attempts to build a new shipbuilding port in the area date back to at least 1989, and focus on an estimated 1,400 acres previously identified for maritime industrial uses.Although no longer the hub it once was, Solano County and the surrounding region has a deep shipbuilding history that dates back to the opening of Mare Island Naval Shipyard (MINS) in 1854. MINS was central to the development and expansion of US naval capabilities for nearly 145 years, particularly when it came to World War II build-up efforts. It also served for decades as a submarine port. The US government finally closed operations for around 7,500 remaining MINS employees in 1996.California Forever publicly announced its $900 million East Solano Plan in August 2023. Envisioned as an idyllic city of yesterday, the new towns founders boasted it would feature novel methods of design, construction, and governance. California Forevers pitch arrived after years of aggressive real estate dealings funded by a group of secretive investors led by former Goldman Sachs trader Jan Sramek. Backers were eventually revealed to include wealthy Silicon Valley venture capitalists like LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman and Lauren Powell Jobs, billionaire philanthropist and widow of Steve Jobs. The East Solano Plan received almost immediate pushback from both local residents and politicians, who criticized the organizations opaque real estate dealings and lofty promises. Meanwhile, environmental groups criticized the projects supposed eco-friendliness, with the Sierra Club describing the overall goals as a hostile takeover of vital agricultural and natural landscapes. Facing mounting pushback, California Forever withdrew an initial measure to fast-track plans that was slated for inclusion on the regions November 2024 election ballot. Representatives at the time said they would instead pursue the East Solano Plan through standard channels, including a full, independent environmental impact review along with preparing a development agreement with local county supervisors.I know from where I stand today, I support this maritime industrial opportunity, Vacaville mayor John Carli told Californias Daily Republic Get the Popular Science newsletter Breakthroughs, discoveries, and DIY tips sent every weekday. During his first state address on March 4, Trump referenced an impending executive order aimed at jumpstarting efforts to compete with Chinas longstanding commercial shipbuilding dominance. A draft of the Make Shipbuilding Great Again executive order obtained by The Washington Post also claimed the president would direct Congress to appropriate funds towards the creation of a US Office of Shipbuilding. Executive orders are not functionally identical to federally passed laws, and can be legally challenged.Meanwhile, maritime experts have already expressed doubts about the feasibility of the Trump White Houses vows for a quick return to domestic ship and naval manufacturing. It appears to be written by people who have absolutely no idea how the maritime supply chain works, Lars Jensen, CEO of Copenhagens Vespucci Maritime consultant agency, said of the EO earlier this month. Jensen cited President Trumps ongoing tariff war provocations, particularly those affecting steel and other manufacturing imports, as counterintuitive to any domestic shipbuilding goals. The Make Shipbuilding Great Again order has yet to be published. We used to make so many ships. We dont make them anymore very much, but were going to make them very fast, very soon, President Trump vowed earlier this month. In an email to Popular Science, a California Forever spokesperson clarified that even if shipyard plans do progress, the project isnt a shift away from the city, but did not provide more details at the time of writing.

  • Earths 5 catastrophic mass extinctions, explained

This photo taken on July 10, 2024 shows part of an Apatosaurus' dinosaur skeleton at the Dampierre-en-Yvelines castle in France prior to an auction. CREDIT: Aurelien Morissard/Xinhua via Getty Images. While life on Earth does usually find a way, it is not without some intense pastand futureperiods of mass death. Extinction is not exclusive to dinosaurs. Our planet has gone through at least five periods of mass extinction, with the planet likely in a sixth wave of mass extinctionthis one, driven by humans.Ordovician-Silurian extinction: An Appalachian connectionThe formation of the Appalachian Mountains may have triggered massive global cooling.CREDIT: Deposit Photos. Our planets first known mass extinction happened about 440 million years ago. Species diversity on Earth had been increasing over a period of roughly 30 million years, but that would come to a halt as water began to freeze in a massive ice cap towards the south pole. The formation of the Appalachian Mountains was the potential cause of this cooling. When the supercontinent Gondwanaland collided with what is now North America, the ancient lapetus Ocean closed over a period of about 150 million years. The weathering of the freshly uplifted rocks from this continental collision may have sucked carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere. As a result, the planet drastically cooled, sea levels plummeted, and roughly 85 percent of species were wiped out.Due to this drop in sea levels, it was particularly hard on marine species including brachiopods, corals, and trilobites. The Devonian extinctions: Pulses of deathA model of a Coelacanth fish is displayed at an exhibition hall on November 4, 2010 in Dresden, Germany. CREDIT: Robert Michael/AFP via Getty Images. Earths marine species, especially those at the tropics, were in trouble again about 419 million to 365 million years ago. This series of mass extinctions during the Devonian period eventually eliminated about 75 percent of life. However, some of Earths oldest fish called coelacanths make it out unscathed. Get the Popular Science newsletter Breakthroughs, discoveries, and DIY tips sent every weekday. By signing up you agree to our Terms of Service and Privacy Policy. There was likely not a single definitive cause of this period of mass extinctions, but oxygen levels in the ocean continually dropped at this time. A combination of several major stresses including excessive sedimentation, rapid global warming or cooling, impacts from comets or meteorites, volcanic activity, or massive nutrient runoff from the continents may have caused these pulses of extinction.Interestingly, plants on land may have played a role. Some of the plants had adaptations including using the stem-strengthening compound lignin and a vascular structure. Both traits allowed them to grow and for their root systems to go deeper than they had before. As a result of these deeper roots, rock weathering may have increased.Permian-Triassic extinction: The really big oneA group of primitive amphibians survived this period of mass extinction. CREDIT: Deposit Photos. Earths largest mass extinction, often referred to as the Great Dying, occurred about 252 million years ago. Massive volcanic eruptions triggered catastrophic climate changes that altered the planets entire biosphere. Over roughly 60,000 years, 96 percent of Earths marine species and about three of every four land species were wiped out. Unfortunately, the Great Dying is the extinction event that most closely parallels Earths current environmental crisis. Both involve global warming related to the release of greenhouse gasses, driven by volcanoes in the Permian and human actions currently, paleontologist Christian Kammerer told Popular Science in a 2023 interview. [They] represent a very rare case of rapid shifts between icehouse and hothouse Earth. So, the turmoil we observe in late Permian ecosystems, with whole sections of the food web being lost, represents a preview for our world if we dont change things fast.Yet, some species managed to survive. A group of primitive amphibians called the temnospondyls may have gotten by through feeding on freshwater prey that larger land-based predators couldnt get to. It also helped that they werent picky eaters.Triassic-Jurassic extinction: Making way for the dinosaursLarge volcanic eruptions spewed carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. CREDIT: Deposit Photos. Life began to rapidly diversify after the Great Dying, but it still struggled. Large volcanic eruptions triggered the Triassic-Jurassic Extinction about 201 million years ago. Carbon dioxide levels rose yet again, acidifying the oceans and warming Earth by an average of five to 11 degrees Fahrenheit. As a result, up to 80 percent of all terrestrial and marine species went extinct. Crocodilians were much larger and more diverse than they are today. They were also dominant terrestrial species, but most of them died out. Both the Great Dying and Triassic-Jurassic extinctions ultimately paved the way for dinosaurs to dominate Earth. And we know how that went.Cretaceous-Tertiary Extinction: Goodbye, dinosaursA fossil of a Sinornithos from a 130-million year old forest that existed in what is now Liaoning Province, China. CREDIT: Spencer Platt/Getty Images. About 66 million years ago, a large space rock slammed into the Earth off the coast of the present-day Yucatn Peninsula of Mexico. The impact from this almost seven-mile wide asteroid generated huge tsunamis and plumes of dust, debris, and sulfur being hurled up into the atmosphere. All of this excess material brought on severe global cooling, while wildfires ignited within 900 miles of the impact. The crater formed by the asteroid strike was about 120-miles wide.As ecosystems collapsed, roughly 75 percent of all the existing plant and animal species went extinct. All non-avian dinosaur species were wiped out in what is arguably the most famous mass extinction in Earths history. With most dinosaurs gone, mammals diversified and took over, paving the way for the ecosystem we see today.

NewsGeneticsWoolly mice were just a start. De-extinction still faces many hurdlesSuccess with mice does not guarantee success with elephants Cute, yes. But is this woolly mouse really a step toward bringing woolly mammoths back?Colossal BioscienceBy Jason Bittel9 seconds agoScientists working to unlock the secrets of de-extinction recently announced what they say is a turning point for the movement: the creation of transgenic mice with long, luxurious golden locks of tufted fur inspired by the coats of woolly mammoths.Theyre called Colossal woolly mice. And yes, they are cute to boot.Transgenic mice those that have had their genomes altered through genetic engineering are not new. But whats novel is the ability to engineer eight edits across seven genes and to do so simultaneously in one animal. The researchers also note that across three experiments, each of which used different combinations of edits, the method worked with high efficiency, resulting in living animals that presented the traits they were bred for.

Fab's Latest Release Introduces Forum Threads, UE5 Plug-In & UX UpdatesFab, the new platform from Epic Games that replaces the Unreal Engine Marketplace, Sketchfab Store, and Quixel Megascans, is undergoing continuous development to restore its full functionality while adding new features, and Epic Games has just released another update and shared an overview of the changes. As before, improving Search is an ongoing and iterative process. This March, after integrating historical data from the Unreal Engine Marketplace and Sketchfab into search rankings, the developers have now started incorporating Fab data into the search weighting. This means recent sales will now have an influence on determining search rankings.Fab's other essential features, Unreal Engine 5 plug-in and UEFN integration, are now aligned with the improved UX. A key addition is the new Include 3D Compatible Formats option. The scrollbar is now wider, too, the left navigation panel remains visible when the panel width is sufficient, and all categories, rather than just a portion of them, are now visible in the plug-in.You can now associate forum threads with product listings on Fab, providing a space for questions, discussions, support, or sharing work created using the products. Please note that this feature is not a replacement for reviews. If you're a publisher, when your product is published on Fab, a forum post will be automatically created with you as the author. The title and description of the post will match the title and description from your Fab product listing, and your listing page will include a direct link to the thread. As for the next steps, the developers revealed that they will focus on improving categories, enhancing the performance of the 3D viewer, and refining the UE5 and UEFN integrations. Additionally, they plan to introduce individual sales for publishers and integrate Fab into the launcher.
