  • Death of a Unicorns director went all-in on unicorn lore: Theyre symbolic of our own corruption
    www.polygon.com
Death of a Unicorn, a monster flick in which two enraged, predatory unicorns chomp and stomp through a mansions worth of exploitative, rich assholes, seems as far as possible from the classic vibe of unicorns as fragile, rare, gently magical creatures. Its equally as far from the more contemporary My Little Pony-clutching Horse Girl vibe around unicorn-associated concepts: sparkles, rainbows, and friendship. But in practice, the movie retains an emotional and thematic coremeant to delight almost any longtime enthusiast for the mythical beast, and writer-director Alex Scharfman even fits in some psychedelic rainbow moments. That sets Unicorn apart from many of its contemporaries in the realm of genre subversions films that slap, say, Regency romance and zombies together, or slasher films and public domain childrens media. When Polygon spoke to Scharfman, he made it clear that his goal went beyond just making a strange juxtaposition. It was really important to me that we didnt do a cynical movie. That is, a monster movie where the monster happens to be a unicorn, Scharfman told Polygon over video chat. It was really important to me that the movie felt true to unicorns, both in terms of their lore, but also in terms of the emotional valence that they carry. In Death of a Unicorn, two unicorn parents rampage through a remote mansion, seeking to rescue and avenge their foal after father/daughter duo Elliot and Ridley (Paul Rudd and Jenna Ortega) accidentally hit it with their car. The emotional throughline comes from Elliot and Ridleys relationship and the connection Ridley forms with the monstrous equines, in the same way that unicorn mythology describes the connection between a unicorn and a pure-hearted (or virginal) maiden.Scharfmans dedication to that setup Elliot and Ridley as the heroes, and the ruthlessly capitalistic Leopolds as villains was mystifying to some producers when he was pitching the movie. There were definitely people who at some points were like, Oh, why are you dealing with any of this emotional stuff, or any of this satire stuff? What if its just four buddies on a hunting trip, and they kill a unicorn? And I was always like, Thats not a unicorn movie, then. Thats a movie with a unicorn in it, but its not about a unicorn. In the chicken and the egg of it all, Scharfman says, the idea of a movie about people who accidentally kill a unicorn came first, and the horror element arrived second.I didnt really know what to do with the story, Scharfman recalled, and then somewhere in the middle of telling the story to my friend, I just blurted out And then a bunch more unicorns show up and they kill everybody! Id never had the thought before, and it was only in the moment of saying it to my friend that I realized, Oh, wow, this is a way in to do a creature feature. The creature-feature genre,as Scharfman has noted, often comes with significant anti-capitalist subtext, in movies from Alien to Jaws to Jurassic Park. And that brought the theme right back around to his original unicorn idea.I think to truly [make a unicorn movie], you need to engage with sure, the lore but the emotional weight that they carry for people, the sense of their symbolism. In a way that speaks to what they are, but also I dont know why theyve resonated with humans over two millennia. If they were just these monsters in the woods, we wouldnt have these emotional associations with them, that theyre symbolic of something that we cant attain. Theyre symbolic of our own corruption. Theyre symbolic of the thing that to our great shame we destroy as a society. And I think that speaks to all of us.Respecting the emotional valence of an idea that has endured for thousands of years wasnt just about accuracy to Scharfman, or living up to an audiences expectations: It was about using existing and powerful symbolism. Its funny, because in some of these conversations, people are like, I didnt know unicorns had to do with class commentary or socialist commentary, Scharfman laughed. And like, well, hell yeah, they do. They always did. Thats the point.Death of a Unicorn is out in theaters this Friday, March 28.

  • This Futuristic XR Lab Looks Straight Out of a Sci-Fi Film
    design-milk.com
Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR), collectively known together as Mixed Reality (XR), are rapidly advancing as companies focus on miniaturizing AR technology and enhancing VR capabilities. While fully immersive virtual collaboration may be the future, todays priority is to develop, learn, and collaborate on XR technology in the physical world. This vision is at the heart of the new XR Lab, designed by WindsorPatania Architects. The new XR Lab space is located at West Suffolk College in the United Kingdom, and was recently awarded the Inspiring Learning Space Award at the 2024 Education Estates Awards. The lab is an impressive high-tech space featuring a Collaboration Theatre, a Green Room, and a Conference Room. But this Green Room isnt the typical waiting area used in theaters or backstage of a concert venue its a fully immersive environment with green ceilings, walls, and floors, designed to make it easier to isolate real-world objects by removing the background, similar to green screen effects used in film production.Though it might seem that interior design wouldnt be a priority in a space dedicated to virtual experiences, the architecture is striking. The XR Lab repurposes an old workshop hangar and incorporates acoustic insulation to enhance XR immersion. Inside, high-end cameras and microphones are strategically placed to create a more natural and seamless XR experience. Beyond serving as a cutting-edge learning environment, the lab is also positioned as a business hub for the surrounding region, particularly focused on the development of XR projectors. The XR Lab is truly an inspired learning space, where ambitious architecture embodies the function of the building, says Giovanni Patania, co-director of WindsonPatania. We are very proud to have been part of this exciting and game-changing educational initiative. The design of the labs other spaces leans into a futuristic, modern aesthetic. This is emphasized by the 3D triangular mesh adorning the buildings exterior, symbolizing the advanced 3D technology being explored and developed within. We had different sources of inspiration for this project, which combined helped us deliver the wow factor our client wanted, Patania says. We reimagined the likes of the Tesla factories in the United States and the boxy Tesla Cybertruck, and even the minimalistic, monochrome interiors from the Men in Black films.Ultimately, the space will hopefully facilitate the development of new and exciting XR tech and software. You can learn more about it at windsorpatania.com. • Amazon's Biggest Kindle Is $75 Off Right Now
    lifehacker.com
We may earn a commission from links on this page. Deal pricing and availability subject to change after time of publication.I love my (admittedly last-gen) Kindle Paperwhite, but even though I know its 6.8-inch screen isn't actually that much smaller than most paperback pages, I still sometimes feel like I have to squint to read it. Maybe it's my fault for seeing it as more of a tablet than an out-and-out digital book, but I do sometimes feel tempted to read on my iPad instead and just put up with the glare. Luckily, Amazon does make a bigger Kindle, and now it's on sale. Amazon Kindle Scribe $324.99 at Amazon $399.99 Save $75.00 Get Deal Get Deal $324.99 at Amazon $399.99 Save $75.00 The Kindle Scribe is Amazon's only e-note, meaning it's intended more for writing on than reading with, but it will work for both. It can access your entire Kindle library, and thanks to its 10.3-inch screen, text and images do feel like they have more room to breathe on it. This can be especially good for comics (although, the black-and-white screen might make you want to stick to manga) and articles, and I've been tempted to upgrade for that reason alone before. The problem was the price, which is normally a little steep at $400. Starting at $325 with this sale, though, it's suddenly a much more attractive prospect. And that goes double when you take into account the Kindle Scribe's intended use case. It comes with a stylus that lets you mark up PDFs and jot down notes in either your own documents or in dedicated boxes in existing books, and Amazon says it's retuned this model to have a more paper-like feel when writing on it. Yes, there is AI here too, although it's fairly unobtrusivewhen you're done handwriting a note, you can have the Scribe quickly summarize it, "refine" it, or reconfigure it into a digital font, if you like. There are arguments to be made for other e-notes despite all this functionalitymy colleague, Joel Cunningham, recently reviewed a similar device, the Boox Note Air 4C, that has a color screen and can run Androidbut if you're already in the Kindle ecosystem, this Scribe sale could make for a handy little upgrade.Shopping for tech?
