"SNL" took on the White House Signal scandal in its latest episode. The show's cold open featured Trump officials accidentally sharing military information with high schoolers. It follows The Atlantic's bombshell reports on the Signal security breach this week. The latest episode of "Saturday Night Live" saw the cast take on the Signal texting scandal. In a spoof of the security leak, Oscar winner Mikey Madison and "SNL" regulars Sarah Sherman and Ego Nwodim played a trio of high schoolers chatting over text who discover that they've been accidentally added to a group chat with Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth.Interrupting their conversation about cute boys and bad outfits, Hegseth, played by Andrew Dismukes, sends: "FYI: Green light on Yemen raid. Tomahawks airborne 15 minutes ago.""Do we know you, bro? This is Jennabel," Madison's character replies. Nwodim adds: "Hey, I think you have the wrong group chat.""LOL LOL. Could you imagine if that actually happened?" Dismukes' Hegseth responds. "Homer disappears into bush GIF. And while I've got everyone, sending a PDF with updated locations of all our nuclear submarines. Check out that one we got chilling right outside Shanghai. Jordan Peele sweating like crazy GIF."As the teenagers continue to plead with Dismukes' Hegseth to stop sending messages, JD Vance (played by Bowen Yang), then joins the chat."Nice job with the strike, fam. Female skier emoji," Yang's Vance writes. "My bad, meant to send fire emoji."Mimicking Vance's recent visit to Greenland during which the vice president hit out at Denmark and repeated calls for the US to take control of the island Yang adds: "Nobody knows why I'm here, especially me."The spoof also features brief cameos from Marcello Hernndez as Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Mikey Day as Jeffrey Goldberg the editor of The Atlantic who was mistakenly added to the real-life Signal group by Michael Waltz, President Donald Trump's national security adviser."Wait, who are the other three numbers here? P.S. sending you the real JFK files, not those fake ones we released. Do not share!" Hernndez's Rubio writes, prompting Nwodim's character to explain that they're high schoolers."In that case, we were totally pranking you guys, LOL," he replies, while also asking them to send their names and home addresses to an ICE email address."Hey, could be worse. We could have added the editor of The Atlantic again," Yang's Vance reasons."You did!" Day's Goldberg says.Goldberg published a bombshell report about the incident in The Atlantic on Monday, detailing how he had been mistakenly added to a chat called the "Houthi PC small group" along with senior Trump administration officials discussing upcoming military strikes on Houthi rebels in Yemen. As scrutiny of the apparent security breach mounted, Trump's team attempted to downplay the significance of the incident and denied that classified material had been shared in the group. In response, The Atlantic published a follow-up article detailing messages from Hegseth about the timings and targets of airstrikes. The leak has drawn alarm from both Republican and Democratic lawmakers.Recommended video

  • I'm a single mom who lives paycheck to paycheck. I once made my son do food deliveries with me to pay for his dinner.

Become an Insider and start reading now.Have an account? I'm a single mom who lives paycheck to paycheck and struggles with money anxiety.I'm always balancing the family budget in my head and figuring out ways to feed my kids dinner.I try to look on the bright side by reminding myself that my kids have a home and are healthy. My son wanted Chipotle for dinner the other night, and I couldn't afford it.I didn't want to say, "Sorry, but I don't have the money" again. So, this time, I said something different: "If you want Chipotle, we have to work for it."I explained to him that I'd have to make a few deliveries on the Uber Eats app to pay for our Chipotle. Thankfully, my 14-year-old was excited about the adventure and didn't realize this isn't how many moms feed their children. But this is my norm because my paycheck as a freelancer and educator in Connecticut doesn't quite last to the next one especially while paying increasing rent and raising three kids. It's becoming even more difficult now that the cost of living is rising. It's so damn defeating.I feel like I'm failing as a motherAt 46, I thought I would have made it by now whatever that means. I thought I would have some financial cushion, a liveable salary, or a husband to ease the financial burden. I have none of that. I'm ashamed I have zero credit cards, savings, or retirement plans.Instead, all I have is worry. My money anxiety is stealing precious moments from under my nose. My kids come home from school with stories and smiles, and I nod, but I'm not really there. I'm in my head, where the wheels are turning, trying to figure out which bills to pay this month and which to put off, hoping that my bank will reverse that overdraft charge and praying that my landlord will accept the late rent again.I wake up every day and strive not to let money (or lack thereof) define me, but every day I fail. I battle with thoughts of inadequacy and guilt and shame because I can't provide for my kids in the ways I know they deserve. We all deserve more. I need a root canal, and the tooth is starting to hurt, but my current health insurance won't cover it, so I am just trying to deal with it until I get new insurance, stumble upon an extra $600, or have the damn tooth pulled altogether. My daughter needs a prom dress; my son has grown three inches and needs an entirely new wardrobe. Anyone who has kids knows that each day brings with it new, unexpected expenses: field trip fees, coaches' gifts, and school projects that require things like a new white T-shirt, poster board, and markers.Thankfully, the kids spend half the time with their father, who covers most of their expenses. But it leaves me feeling ashamed and guilty.I envy other families who don't have to deal with money issuesAs I stroll up and down the grocery aisles, I add the items in my cart to be sure their sum total isn't more than my bank balance. We've recently had to cut back significantly on groceries because of the rising prices.I also look at the other moms and dads: Their overflowing carts, the smiles on their faces, and the Airpods in their ears tell me they probably aren't calculating anything. It makes me frustrated and sad that we have to live like this while they don't have these worries.I try to convince myself that life isn't about material things, like dinners at nice restaurants, new comfortable shoes, or grocery carts overflowing with luxury items like ice cream and shrimp.Still, there is happiness, and I hold onto thatRecently, I overheard my son say to his sister: "Moms are magical, aren't they?"Moments like that make me believe I can do anything and get us through all of these difficulties.I remind myself that we are blessed with a roof over our heads, food on the table, and health. These are the times when I know we are rich in important ways.I also knew this on the Uber Eats deliveries with my son. To him, it was an adventure and an opportunity to earn something he desperately wanted. As it turns out, it was an opportunity for us to enjoy the things we do have that money truly can't buy: laughter, health, and love.We were broke but happy for those three Uber Eats deliveries and we laughed the whole time. It just so happens that Chipotle tastes even better when it's hard-earned.Maybe my tomorrows are filled with a different story and the comfort of financial stability or maybe my wealth comes in the form of health and love.Recommended video

  • Why are so many college basketball players from other countries?
    www.vox.com
Vox reader Brian Diederich asks: Why and how do so many collegiate basketball teams both mens and womens now have so many international student-athletes?If youve turned on March Madness this year, youve witnessed the most international players ever in college basketballs signature competition. Across both the mens and womens brackets, 264 athletes 15 percent of all NCAA players in the tournaments hailed from outside of the US. They are a cross-section of humanity, representing 45 countries in the womens tournament and 52 in the mens. The number of overall international college basketball players more than doubled from 2010 to 2025. It is a trend across sports: 25,000 of all US college athletes were born in another country.Forty years ago, US schools put little thought into recruiting players from Africa or Europe. A handful of players started to come to the US to play college ball in the 1980s, as the NBA was becoming more popular and thinking more globally. But international players were almost exclusively identified by word of mouth, recommendations from a friend of a friend. Sometimes, the US coaches wouldnt even see any game tape before signing a player to a scholarship; in 1984, Dutch player Rik Smits got a scholarship offer from Marist University based on nothing but his height (74); he says the coach never even saw him play. But today, the NBA and NCAA have built out an international pipeline for players, while the internet has made it easier than ever to scout from abroad. A lot has changed. What has driven more international recruitment in college basketball?NBA legend Hakeem Olajuwon, who came to the US in 1980 to play NCAA basketball, is a pivotal figure in this evolution. Then a relatively unknown Nigerian teenager, he was offered a chance to try out for the University of Houstons team because a coach had heard from an acquaintance that Olajuwon was a promising prospect. After his star college career and a successful transition to the pros, Olajuwon had set the blueprint. Olajuwon became one of the NBAs best players in the 80s and 90s, winning an NBA MVP and two championships. His rise was paralleled by Jamaicas Patrick Ewing, who moved from Kingston to play high school basketball in the US before attending Georgetown and then going on to make the New York Knicks one of the consistently best in the league. Smits played for 12 seasons and made one All-Star team. Their success, and the next generation of players who followed, pushed the NBA and, with it, college basketball on the path to globalization. By the turn of the century, even elite prep schools were starting to recruit international players.A recruiting arms race got underway in the 80s and 90s, and then an NCAA rule change in 2010 made it easier for more international players to come to the US.Basketball is typically one of the most popular and most profitable athletic programs that a university will have, second only to football if the school has a football team and for some schools, like Duke, basketball still maintains primacy. The pressure to compete is intense. If youre at the University of North Carolina and you see your top rival, the Blue Devils, recruiting abroad, you are going to start doing the same thing. International recruitment went from happenstance in the 80s to an indispensable recruitment tactic that teams across the NCAA used to keep up.In 2001, the NBA and NCAA doubled down on the strategy and set up a formal pipeline, the Basketball Without Borders program, to get promising international players in front of American scouts. The NBA has more recently set up academic training camps that teach basketball skills while also offering more general education classes to prepare participants for a US college experience. The program proved to be a success. One of Basketball Without Borderss graduates is Joel Embiid, a Cameroonian player who came to basketball as a teenager, played as a Kansas Jayhawk, and won an MVP at the professional level in 2023.Technology helped revolutionize basketball recruiting. In 1984, Rik Smitss Marist coach had to hope that somebody had recorded Smits playing on some grainy VHS tape and then physically get his hands on that tape. Without that, he had nothing to go on but height. Today, player highlights from all over the world are uploaded to YouTube where American coaches can view them easily at any time, and players can even build hype on social media to get attention from recruiters. Those recruiters are offering players not only the chance to come to the US for an education theyre also offering a financial opportunity. How has money in college sports affected international recruitment?Money is changing everything about what it means to be a college athlete including for international players. An opportunity to make money for themselves and not just for the schools is steering even more foreign basketballers to US colleges. NCAA athletes can now earn money through endorsements and other activities thanks to the Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) rule that took effect in 2021. In the 90s and early 2000s, as international recruitment was spreading, playing college basketball wasnt necessarily the smart move for the most elite foreign players. They could instead play in the expanding overseas professional leagues, earn a salary, and then enter the NBA draft without ever attending a US school. And that path was well trod: Luka Doni, the subject of a media frenzy after his trade to the Los Angeles Lakers, played in the EuroLeague and leapt to the NBA in 2018 three years before the NIL provision took effect. But today, you can make real money playing college basketball in America and earn a salary that rivals those of foreign professional leagues. International players do have to jump through some extra hoops, as students on an immigration visa earning money raises legal questions, but athletes and their sponsoring institutions are quickly becoming savvy about how to navigate that issue. The potential to make money while in school might even convince some players to stay in the college game longer instead of jumping to the NBA as quickly as possible. Michigan center Vladislav Goldin, who was born in Russia, helped lead the Wolverines to their Sweet 16 berth last weekend, but he almost wasnt there at all: Hed declared for the NBA draft in spring 2024, but changed his mind and transferred from Florida International University to the U of M, a more prestigious program with more earning opportunities. A decade or two ago, that would have been unthinkable. But the business of college basketball has changed and so have the players. This story was also featured in the Explain It to Me newsletter. • AI Experts Say Were on the Wrong Path to Achieving Human-Like AI
    gizmodo.com
According to a panel of hundreds of artificial intelligence researchers, the field is currently pursuing artificial general intelligence the wrong way. This insight was revealed at the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI)s 2025 Presidential Panel on the Future of AI Research. The lengthy report was put together by 24 AI researchers whose expertise ranges from the state of AI infrastructure to the social aspects of artificial intelligence. The report included a main takeaway for each section, as well as a community opinion section where respondents were asked their own thoughts about the section. The section on AI Perception vs. Reality, chaired by MIT computer scientist Rodney Brooks, referenced the Gartner Hype Cycle characterization, a five-stage cycle common for technology hype. In November 2024, Gartner estimated that hype for Generative AI had just passed its peak and was on the downswing, the report noted. 79% of respondents in the community opinion section stated that current public perceptions of AIs capabilities do not match the reality of AI research and development, with 90% saying that the mismatch is hindering AI research74% of that number saying that the directions of AI research are driven by the hype. Artificial general intelligence (AGI) refers to human-level intelligence: The hypothetical intelligence of a machine that interprets information and learns from it as a human being would. AGI is a holy grail of the field, with implications for automation and efficiency across countless fields and disciplines. Consider any menial task that you dont want to spend much time doing, from planning a trip to filing your taxes. AGI could be deployed to ease the burden of rote tasks, but also catalyze progress in other fields, from transportation to education and technology. The surprising majority76% of 475 respondentssaid that simply scaling up current approaches to AI will not be sufficient to yield AGI. Overall, the responses indicate a cautious yet forward-moving approach: AI researchers prioritize safety, ethical governance, benefit-sharing, and gradual innovation, advocating for collaborative and responsible development rather than a race toward AGI, the report wrote. Despite hype distorting the state of researchand current approaches to AI not putting researchers on the most optimal path towards AGIthe technology has made leaps and bounds.Five years ago, we could hardly have been having this conversation AI was limited to applications where a high percentage of errors could be tolerated, such as product recommendation, or where the domain of knowledge was strictly circumscribed, such as classifying scientific images, explained Henry Kautz, a computer scientist at the University of Virginia and chair of the reports section on Factuality & Trustworthiness, in an email to Gizmodo. Then, quite suddenly in historic terms, general AI started to work and come to public attention through chatbots such as ChatGPT. AI factuality is far from solved, the report read, and the best LLMs only answered about half of a set of questions correctly in a 2024 benchmark test. But new training methods can improve the robustness of those models, and new ways of organizing AI can further better their performance.I believe the next stage in improving trustworthiness will be the replacement of individual AI agents with cooperating teams of agents that continually fact-check either other and try to keep each other honest, Kautz added. Most of the general public as well as the scientific communityincluding the community of AI researchersunderestimates the quality of the best AI systems today; the perception of AI lags about a year or two behind the technology. AI is not going anywhere; after all, the Gartner Hype Cycle doesnt end with fade into oblivion, but instead the plateau of productivity. Different arenas of AI use cases have different levels of hype, but with all the clamor about AIfrom the private sector, from government officials, heck, from our own familiesthe report is a refreshing reminder that AI researchers are thinking very critically about the state of their field. From the way AI systems are built to the ways they are deployed in the world, there is room for innovation and improvement. Since we arent going back to a time without AI, the only direction is forward.

  • Sloped to Fit: 14 Homes That Embrace the Hill as a Catalyst for Their Design

Sloped to Fit: 14 Homes That Embrace the Hill as a Catalyst for Their DesignSave this picture!Cabbage Tree House by Peter Stutchbury Architecture. Image Michael NicholsonWhen we think about cities, we often assume the orthogonal grid is the norm: neat, predictable, and rational. However, many urban areas around the world, notably those shaped by hills and uneven terrain, defy this convention. In cities like Lisbon, in Portugal orthogonal grids appear only in flatter zones such as Baixa, while surrounding areas like Alfama adapt organically to topography. These areas create more layered, irregular, and visually dynamic urban forms. Yerevan in Armenia, offers another urban example of this adaptation: the Cascade Complex transforms a steep hill into a terraced public space that connects different city levels while framing panoramic views. For other countries, this response to topography becomes even more critical. Cities like Tegucigalpa in Honduras or Valparaiso in Chile are defined by steep, irregular terrain that requires architects to engage deeply with the land. Designing in these contexts, especially for residential projects, demands technical adaptation and a contextual understanding that allows the slope to become a generative element in the design process. In this regard, this roundup aims to provide examples of houses that tackle their relationship with topography in different ways. At the same time, it hopes to offer brainstorming ideas for architects looking to design in similar contexts. Interestingly, three strategies became evident when working with sloped terrain: The first is to elevate the structure on stilts, allowing the interior layout to remain horizontal and detached from the irregularities of the land below. The second approach involves creating stepped or terraced forms that follow the slope, dividing the program vertically, and allowing each level to adapt to different elevations. The third builds on the previous two by using the slope itself as a generator for the form, by aligning or contrasting the geometry of the house with the incline. Each one represents a way to work with, rather than against, the topography, transforming constraints into opportunities for spatial richness and deeper integration with the environment.Read on to discover 14 houses around the world that embody these strategies, offering diverse approaches to building with the slope. Related Article Touching the Earth Lightly: How Freeing the Ground Plane Shapes Architectural Atmosphere Elevating the Structure on StiltsOne of the most straightforward responses to sloped terrain is to lift the structure above it using stilts. This approach preserves a flat, orthogonal interior layout while minimizing disruption to the existing landform. By detaching the house from the ground, architects can avoid costly excavation and create interesting spatial moments beneath the structure, such as shaded outdoor areas, better airflow, or elevated viewpoints. Design-wise, it often emphasizes horizontality and allows the building to read more clearly as a singular, unified object set against the complexity of the terrain.House in the Trees / Ayako ArquiteturaSave this picture!Save this picture!Oyea House / Yangnar StudioSave this picture!Save this picture!VAY, Coonoor Retreat Lodge / Biome Environmental SolutionsSave this picture!Save this picture!A Lodge in the Pige / Mestizo Estudio ArquitecturaSave this picture!Save this picture!Workshop House / Agustn Berzero + Manuel Gonzalez Veglia (Tectum arquitectura)Save this picture!Save this picture!Divide the Program in TerracesThis method embraces the slope by dividing the building program across multiple levels that follow the natural incline. These stepped or terraced forms offer opportunities for visual connectivity, interior spatial variety, and outdoor platforms at different elevations. This strategy works well when the goal is to integrate the home more intimately with the terrain, allowing each level to open onto the landscape. The building in this case becomes an unfolding experience, where the act of moving through the space mirrors the act of climbing or descending the terrain itself.Sar Street House / Parsonson ArchitectsSave this picture!Save this picture!Oblique House / Red Brick StudioSave this picture!Save this picture!House on a Slope / Gian Salis ArchitectSave this picture!Save this picture!Oru House / saavedra arquitectosSave this picture!Save this picture!Villa in Frdava / Uhlik architektiSave this picture!Save this picture! The Slope as a Generator for the FormThe most integrated approach treats the slope not as a challenge to overcome, but as a design generator. In these cases, the house's geometry is either aligned with or deliberately contrasted against the topography, resulting in highly contextual forms. This strategy can help to produce architecture that feels deeply rooted in placewhere circulation, materiality, and views are created in direct response to the land's rhythms and contours. The slope becomes the organizing principle, anchoring the architecture both physically and conceptually to its environment.Peace Residence / Quinzhee ArchitectureSave this picture!Save this picture!Sloping House / Claudio Santander + Mara Ines BuzzoniSave this picture!Save this picture!Cabbage Tree House / Peter Stutchbury ArchitectureSave this picture!Save this picture!Guthrie House / Felipe Assadi & Francisca PulidoSave this picture!Save this picture!Image gallerySee allShow lessAbout this authorMoises CarrascoAuthorCite: Moises Carrasco. • How to customize Google Chrome to make it your own
    www.popsci.com
Part of the appeal of Google Chrome on the desktop is its simple and intuitive interfaceallowing you to focus on the actual webpages youre looking at. But there are ways to give the browser a fresh lick of digital paint, and customize the look to suit your tastes.Youre likely to be spending a lot of time looking at your web browser, so it makes sense to take advantage of the personalization optionssome of which you may not have realized are available inside Chrome. Heres everything you can do in the latest version of Google Chrome for Windows and macOS.Choose a new Chrome themeApplying a new theme can really change the look of Chrome. Screenshot: Google The biggest change you can make to Google Chrome is to change its theme: This covers the colors of the tabs and toolbars, the background images and colors on the new tab page, and the accents used in menus and on dialogs. Open a new Chrome tab, then click Customize Chrome (bottom right) to see some color scheme options (with some themes, the Customize Chrome button is just a pencil icon).Click any color swatch to apply it, and use the Light and Dark options to force Chrome into light or dark mode (the Device setting means Chrome follows the lead of Windows or macOS). If you want to choose your own color, click on the little color picker icon in the bottom-right corner of the grid.To see even more theme options, choose Change theme. This brings you to a gallery of themes created by artists and picked out by Google. Youll notice that these themes often come with attractive background images for the new tab page (use the Refresh daily toggle switch to automatically cycle between themes every day). You can also upload an image of your own, or choose a solid color.Still unable to find something you like? Click the Chrome Web Store link at the bottom of the pop-out panel, and you can browse even more options. Open the Themes tab and you get plenty of choice, including themes developed by Google and themes submitted by other Chrome users. To apply a theme, click on it to see more details, then choose Add to Chrome. The pop-out customization panel also has a Reset to default Chrome if your interface tweaking gets out of hand. Note that this will wipe out any custom themes youve added to the browser, so if you want to get back to them in the future, you might want to bookmark them in the Chrome Web Store.Set other customization optionsYou can find more appearance options inside Chrome Settings. Screenshot: Google Besides theming, you can customize Chrome in a variety of other ways. Click the Customize Chrome button (or the pencil icon) in the bottom-right corner of the new tab page, and if you scroll down youll see you can set the shortcuts that appear when you open a new tab: You can curate your own shortcuts, show shortcuts for sites you visit a lot, or hide the shortcuts altogether. If youre opting to show your own shortcuts, use the Add shortcut button below the search bar to drop in a new web link. Once links are added, you can click and drag their icons to move them around the new tab page, and click the three dots besides an icon and Remove to delete any of your shortcuts.Click Toolbar on the pop-out customization panel, and this gives you access to a few options for the toolbar. Youre able to choose which icons appear on the toolbar (from Home to History), and you can rearrange icons by clicking and dragging them on the toolbar itself. You can find even more options by clicking the three dots in the top-right corner of any Chrome tab, then choosing Settings and Appearance. You can replace the new tab page with a site of your choice from this screen, as well as show or hide the bookmarks bar, customize the fonts used by Chrome, and choose whether the side panel appears on the right or the left. Finally, its well worth browsing through the Chrome Web Store for third-party extensions relating to the user interface. A lot of these extensions enable you to do more with the new tab page and with the way tabs are displayed on screen, though you should be cautious about which extensions you install. To be able to operate effectively and integrate with Chrome, these extensions will need access to data such as your browsing history (each extension comes with user reviews and a privacy policy you can check).
