(AP Photo/Evan Vucci, File) Share By JOSH BOAKUpdated [hour]:[minute] [AMPM] [timezone], [monthFull] [day], [year] Share WASHINGTON (AP) After weeks of White House hype and public anxiety, President Donald Trump is set Wednesday to announce a barrage of self-described reciprocal tariffs on friend and foe alike. The new tariffs coming on what Trump has called Liberation Day is a bid to boost U.S. manufacturing and punish other countries for what he has said are years of unfair trade practices. But by most economists assessments, the risky move threatens to plunge the economy into a downturn and mangle decades-old alliances. The White House is exuding confidence despite the political and financial gamble being undertaken.April 2, 2025, will go down as one of the most important days in modern American history, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said at Tuesdays briefing while adding that the new tariffs will take effect immediately. The reciprocal tariffs Trump plans to announce follow similar recent announcements of 25% taxes on auto imports; levies against China, Canada and Mexico; and expanded tariffs on steel and aluminum. Trump has also put tariffs against countries that import oil from Venezuela and plans separate import taxes on pharmaceutical drugs, lumber, copper and computer chips. RELATED COVERAGE None of the warning signs about a falling stock market or consumer sentiment turning morose have caused the administration to publicly second-guess its strategy. White House trade adviser Peter Navarro has suggested that the new tariffs would raise $600 billion annually, which would be the largest tax increase since World War II. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told lawmakers that the tariffs would be capped and could be negotiated downward by other countries, according to the office of Rep. Kevin Hern, R-Okla. But the White House has yet to confirm policy details, despite Trump saying on Monday that he had made his decision.Importers would likely pass along some of the cost of the taxes on to consumers. The Budget Lab at Yale University estimates that a 20% universal tariff would cost the average household an additional $3,400 to $4,200. The administrations premise is that manufacturers will quickly increase domestic production and create new factory jobs and the White House is expressing confidence that Trumps approach is absolutely correct.Theyre not going to be wrong, Leavitt said. It is going to work. And the president has a brilliant team of advisers who have been studying these issues for decades. And we are focused on restoring the golden age of America and making America a manufacturing superpower. The bold optimism has done little to reassure the public or allies who see the import taxes as a threat.Based on the possibility of broad 20% tariffs that have been floated by some White House aides, most analyses see an economy tarnished by higher prices and stagnation. U.S. economic growth as measured by gross domestic product would be roughly a percentage point lower, and clothing, oil, automobiles, housing, groceries and even insurance would cost more, the Budget Lab analysis found.Trump would single-handedly be applying these tariffs, since he has ways of legally doing so without congressional approval. That makes it easy for Democratic lawmakers and policymakers to criticize the Republican administration, if the uncertainty expressed by businesses and declining consumer sentiment are, in fact, signs of trouble to come. Heather Boushey, who served as a member of the Biden White Houses Council of Economic Advisers, noted that the less aggressive tariffs Trump imposed during his first term failed to stir the manufacturing renaissance he promised voters. We are not seeing indications of the boom that the president promised, Boushey said. Its a failed strategy.Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer of New York said the tariffs were fundamentally a way for Trump to raise revenues in order to pay for his planned extensions of income tax cuts that disproportionately favor millionaires and billionaires.Almost everything they do, including tariffs, it seems to me, is aimed at getting those tax cuts for the wealthy, Schumer said Tuesday on the Senate floor.Even Republicans who trust Trumps instincts have acknowledged that the tariffs could be disruptive to an economy with an otherwise healthy 4.1 % unemployment rate.Well see how it all develops, said House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La. It may be rocky in the beginning. But I think that this will make sense for Americans and help all Americans.Longtime trading partners are preparing their own countermeasures. Canada has already imposed some in response to the 25% tariffs that Trump tied to the trafficking of fentanyl. The European Union, in response to the steel and aluminum tariffs, put taxes on 26 billion euros worth ($28 billion) of U.S. goods, including on bourbon, which prompted Trump to threaten a 200% tariff on European alcohol. Many allies feel they have been reluctantly drawn into a confrontation by Trump, who routinely says that friends and foes have essentially ripped off the United States with a mix of tariffs and other trade barriers. The flip side, of course, is that Americans also have the incomes to choose to buy designer gowns by French fashion houses and autos from German manufacturers, whereas World Bank data show the EU has lower incomes per capita than the United States.Europe has not started this confrontation, said European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. We do not necessarily want to retaliate but, if it is necessary, we have a strong plan to retaliate and we will use it.Because Trump has hyped his tariffs without providing specifics, he has provided a deeper sense of uncertainty for the world, a sign that the economic slowdown could possibly extend beyond U.S. borders to other nations that would see one person to blame.Ray Sparnaay, general manager of JE Fixture & Tool, a Canadian tool and die business that sits across the Detroit River, said the uncertainty has crushed his companys ability to make plans.Theres going to be tariffs implemented. We just dont know at this point, he said Monday. Thats one of the biggest problems weve had probably the last well, since November is the uncertainty. Its basically slowed all of our quoting processes, business that we hope to secure has been stalled.___Associated Press reporters Lisa Mascaro in Washington and Mike Householder in Oldcastle, Ontario, contributed to this report.JOSH BOAK Boak covers the White House and economic policy for The Associated Press. • Samuel B. Conant House // 1895
    buildingsofnewengland.com
Built in 1895 for Samuel Conant, president of aPawtucketprinting firm, this stately residence is one of the finest Colonial Revival houses in Central Falls, Rhode Island. Designed by the Providence architectural firm of Stone, Carpenter & Willson, the house is brick on the first floor with clapboard siding above. The Contant house has a gambrel roof punctuated by several gable dormers. The main facade has two symmetrical round bays, which rise to the roof and are topped by low balustrades. A single-story porch extends between the center points of these bays, and is also topped by a low balustrade. Recognized for its architectural grandeur (inside and out), the house was individually listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Conant House is now used as a nursing home and while the transition to this new use has required a number of interior alterations, these changes have been made with sympathy for the character of the house and many of them are reversible.

  • 2 Tried-And-True Tricks For Sleepless Nights From A Psychologist
    www.forbes.com
A sleepless night can feel endless, but your body isnt broken. If youre struggling to doze off or ... More just desperate for rest, these two tricks might bring relief.gettyThere are few things in life as frustrating as insomnia. Laying in bed, exhausted, but failing to fall asleep can make it feel as though your body is betraying you. Pair this struggle with the painstaking awareness that sleep is essential for your daily functioning, and sleep deprivation can quickly become maddening or even torturous.Yet those who face sleep deprivation may also hesitate to seek help for it. Whether its the fear of dependence on medication, the sheer expense or inaccessibility of healthcare or the simple belief that itll improve on its own, the battle against insomnia is one often fought alone without help or insight. However, it doesnt have to be this way; sleep is recognized as one of our most fundamental human needs, and no person on Earth should have to go without it.If youre facing insomnia, but lack the support needed to overcome it, heres two things that may help you find the rest that you need according to research.1. Resist The Urge To Force SleepBesides obvious medical causes, there are various factors that can lead to struggles with sleep onset. It could be dietary, such as too much caffeine or alcohol, or it could be environmental, like distracting noises or an uncomfortable bed. In some cases, it could just be a stressful day and in others, it could simply be the fact that your body just isnt ready to fall asleep yet.No matter the cause, our most intuitive instinct when faced with restlessness is often to will ourselves to sleep: to lay in bed, close our eyes and pray that sleep will come. However, according to a 2023 study from the Journal of Sleep Research, this is exactly what you shouldnt do when struggling to fall asleep.Much like nearly all of our bodily functions, sleep is a physiological process meaning, in other words, that its automatic. While we can certainly influence it, we cannot direct this process. Think of it in the same way you would breathing: you can focus on it and try to control it, but it can (and should) be enacted automatically. And often, the more you try to regulate it, the more difficult it becomes. This is why one of the most easy, accessible and effective treatments for sleep onset difficulties is stimulus control. According to the 2023 study, this process serves to reinforce the association you have between your sleeping and your resting place or, rather, your bed.Your bed is made for sleeping. Thus, laying in it for hours on end without sleeping can make it much harder to successfully associate it as a place intended for rest. As such, sleep therapists recommend a simple six-step routine for reinstating this association:Only lay down in your bed, with the intention to go to sleep, when you are tired.Try your very best to not use your bed for anything other than sleep (with sex, of course, being the one exception to this.) This means no eating, reading, watching TV, scrolling on your phone or even worrying while youre in bed.As soon as you find yourself struggling to fall asleep in your bed, get up immediately and go to another room. Stay up as long as you want, most preferably, doing something relaxing and not overstimulating like reading, listening to a podcast or working on a puzzle. Then, you can return once you feel that youre ready to sleep. Remember that the main goal is to associate your bed with falling asleep quickly. If youre in bed for longer than 10 minutes without falling asleep, then you need to get up and leave the room.If you still cant fall asleep, repeat step three as often as needed throughout the night.Set your alarm for the same time each and every morning, regardless of how much sleep you get. This will enforce your body to slowly acquire a more consistent sleep rhythm.Avoid napping during the daytime. While this process might seem tedious, various peer-reviewed research studies suggest it to be highly effective in the treatment of sleep onset disorders. As frustrating as sleep deprivation can be, you must trust your body to do what it was designed to do. The harder you fight to fall asleep in your bed without success, the more frustrated you will become. In turn, sleep will only become more difficult. Throughout the process, try to remind yourself that you will fall asleep eventually once your mind and your body are both ready to do so.2. Remember That Rest Without Sleep Still CountsWhile stimulus control is proven to be effective, it can nevertheless take time to get the hang of it. In the early stages, you might find yourself getting in and out of bed a few times in a night before managing to fall asleep. In other words, you might have to lose some sleep before you get some. This, of course, will be frustrating. Before seeing improvements, you might feel that the entire process is counterintuitive or a waste of time and effort. But, again, holding onto this frustration may only lengthen the process. On days and nights like these where sleep feels impossible, and exhaustion sets in theres one gentle reminder that may help: rest, even without sleep, is still invaluable. While sleep is undeniably crucial, sleep therapists implore us to remember that simply resting whether through meditation, deep breathing or even just lying down with your eyes closed can still provide significant benefits.A 2024 study from Scientific Reports on Yoga Nidra, for example, demonstrated that this deeply relaxed state can mimic some of the restorative effects of sleep specifically, by calming the nervous system and reducing stress. In other words, even if you arent sleeping, there are other ways to allow your body and mind to recover. The key is to shift your mindset. Instead of viewing wakefulness as a failure, try to reframe it as an opportunity for rest. If you find yourself lying in bed unable to sleep and need to leave your bedroom (as outlined in step three of stimulus control), you can use this time to focus on relaxing your muscles, slowing your breath or even engaging in a mindfulness exercise. While sufferers of insomnia may be fed up with hearing suggestions like meditation, mindfulness and yoga, theres a reason that theyre so often recommended: theres ample research that lends support to their effectiveness. They have undeniable success in lowering cortisol levels and easing frustration and, more importantly, they make it easier to drift into sleep naturally when your body is ready. If they havent worked for you yet, dont give up. You might just need a little more instruction like classes or YouTube videos on the finer details of these practices.Insomnia can be infuriating; it can feel like theres no way around it. But beating yourself up over it wont make sleep come any faster. Instead of treating each sleepless night as a fight you need to win, try to meet it with patience. Some nights will be easier than others, and some will still be rough. But by giving yourself permission to rest, even when sleep doesnt come, youre making space for your body to do what it needs to do on its own time.Has restlessness become part of your nightly routine? The TV achieves some of the best contrast levels weve seen for a set priced this low, and you can also expect vibrant colors and smooth motion clarity, thanks in part to the B4s native 120Hz refresh rate and gaming features like VRR and ALLM support.RelatedIdeally, youll place the B4 in a moderately lit room, as its WOLED display has a tough time with harsh ambient lighting and glare. We also wouldnt rely on HDR to save the day, as the B4 Series only delivers decent specular highlights and doesnt support HDR10+.Still, the LG B4 does a great job at polishing every source, so even your old DVD collection looks fresh and new. cha-ching $70 and $80 game price tags send an early signal about Switch 2 game pricing Early first-party games are getting bumped up to the $70-to-$80 range. Andrew Cunningham Apr 2, 2025 3:30 pm | 7 Mario Kart World's $80 price tag increase is a significant bump from the current Switch. Credit: Nintendo Mario Kart World's $80 price tag increase is a significant bump from the current Switch. Credit: Nintendo Story textSizeSmallStandardLargeWidth *StandardWideLinksStandardOrange* Subscribers only Learn moreNintendo's Switch 2 presentation gave us pricing for the console ($449 to start) and Nintendo's product pages have given us pricing information for accessories ($80 for a Pro Controller, $90 for another pair of Joy-Cons, and $110 for a replacement dock, sheesh). But what Nintendo didn't mention during the presentation was game pricing, either for standalone Switch 2 titles or the Switch 2 Edition upgrades for existing Switch games. We do have one solid first-party data point for US game pricing:Mario Kart World, the console's flagship launch title, will cost $50 when you buy a digital copy as part of a Switch 2 bundle. But the game will cost $80 when you buy it on its own, $30 more than the pack-in version and $20 more than the usual $60 price for first-party Switch games. That doesn't mean that $80 is the starting price forall Switch 2 games.Donkey Kong Bananza, slated for a near-launch July 17 release, has a $69.99 MSRP, which is more in line with the $70 default for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S games.Nintendo hasn't explained that first-party pricing gap between the two games, but it could reflect Mario Kart World's more involved online multiplayer, or simply be a way to push people on the fence in the direction of the cheaper bundled version.Inflation alone would be enough to justify the price increasesa $60 game in 2017 could cost $78 now (though that's using the overall rate of inflation, and prices have risen more steeply in some corners of the economy than others). But with a new console comes the potential for better and more detailed graphics, and those can take more money to produce, too.The big question mark is how expensive the Switch 2 Edition game upgrades will be, and what the price gap (if any) will be between games likeMetroid Prime 4 orPokmon Legends: Z-Athat are going to launch on both the original Switch and the Switch 2.But we can infer fromMario Kart andDonkey Kong that the pricing for these Switch 2 upgrades will most likely be somewhere in the $10 to $20 rangethe difference between the $60 price of most first-party Switch releases and the $70-to-$80 price for Switch 2 games. Sony charges a similar $10 fee to upgrade from the PS4 to the PS5 editions of games that will run on both consoles.Nintendo will also use some Switch 2 Edition upgrades as a carrot to entice people to the more expensive $50-per-year tier of the Nintendo Switch Online service. The company has already announced that the upgrade packs for Breath of the Wild andTears of the Kingdom will be offered for free to Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack subscribers. The list of extra benefits for that service now includes additional emulated consoles (Game Boy, Game Boy Advance, Nintendo 64, and now Gamecube) and paid DLC for both Animal Crossing: New Horizons andMario Kart 8.Andrew CunninghamSenior Technology ReporterAndrew CunninghamSenior Technology Reporter Andrew is a Senior Technology Reporter at Ars Technica, with a focus on consumer tech including computer hardware and in-depth reviews of operating systems like Windows and macOS.
