Ubisoft censors Far Cry 4 nudity 10 years after the game came out
Probably not approved by Pagan Min (Ubisoft)Ubisoft has quietly rolled out a bizarre update to the PC version of Far Cry 4, which appears to have covered up some of the characters.Censorship in video games has always been a thorny issue, especially as the dominance of the US market means extreme gore is usually always okay and yet the slightest hint of sex or nudity is discouraged.A particularly strange case has now cropped up with a 10 year old game; the PC version of Far Cry 4, which was originally released in 2014, received an update on April 3, 2025 that appears to have censored certain characters with no explanation as to why.Ubisoft hasnt released any patch notes to acknowledge the changes but the sizeable update has been recorded on SteamDB. While its unclear what exactly has been altered, players have started reporting some of the changes on Reddit. As posted in the Far Cry thread, a previously topless woman at the Shanath Arena is now wearing a bra following the update. A Reddit user has also claimed protagonist Ajay is no longer naked during the Shanath Arena mission and now wears a loincloth, posting a screenshot as proof.More TrendingThe sequence with Ajay, where a mans genitals are briefly exposed is highlighted in Far Cry 4s ESRB rating, so its unclear why it has been changed nearly 11 years later, and only on PC. Weve reached out to Ubisoft for comment. While any belated censorship is odd, it feels particularly strange in the case of Far Cry 4. The games predecessor, Far Cry 3, features an actual sex scene between protagonist Jason and Rakyat tribal leader Citra, where her bare breasts are covered in blood, and yet that hasnt been changed. The last instalment in the series was 2021s Far Cry 6, and Ubisoft has yet to officially announce a follow-up. Two separate Far Cry games were believed to be in the works at one point, between a mainline sequel (presumably Far Cry 7) and a multiplayer spin-off, but the latter was reportedly cancelled this year.As announced last month, the Far Cry franchise is now part of a separate subsidiary co-owned by Ubisoft and Tencent. This same company also houses Ubisofts other big franchises, such as Assassins Creed and Tom Clancys Rainbow Six. A new Far Cry is yet to be announced (Ubisoft)Emailgamecentral@metro.co.uk, leave a comment below, follow us on Twitter, andsign-up to our newsletter. To submit Inbox letters and Readers Features more easily, without the need to send an email, just use ourSubmit Stuff page here. For more stories like this, check our Gaming page.GameCentralSign up for exclusive analysis, latest releases, and bonus community content. This site is protected by reCAPTCHA and the Google Privacy Policy and Terms of Service apply. Nia DaCosta Looks at The Marvels as a Learning Experience
By Germain Lussier Published April 4, 2025 | Comments (0) | Nia DaCosta directing Iman Vellani on the set of The Marvels. Image: Marvel Looking back at The Marvels, very few things went right. Production was difficult, the movie was a financial disappointment, and many fans found the story lacking, too. It was a bummer considering what was being attempted: a sequel to one of Marvels biggest surprise hits, Captain Marvel, as well as its most ambitious attempt to date of tying the Disney+ streaming shows into the Cinematic Universe, by weaving in Ms. Marvel and Monica Rambeau. And, in the end, lots of people laid the blame on director Nia DaCosta. She was an easy target. A young, Black, female filmmaker given the reins to such big, complicated project. Of course, this was all largely unwarranted and borderline offensive because DaCosta was only a small part of a big, corporate machine she had little control over. Looking back on the experience, though, she now has a very healthy point of view on it. Speaking at the Storyhouse screenwriting festival in Dublin, reported on by Deadline, DaCosta explained that the Marvel way of making movies was just a lot. They had a date, and they were prepping certain things, and you just have to lean into the process hardcore, she said at the event. The way they make those films is very different to the way, ideally, I would make a film, so you just have to lean into the process and hope for the best. The best didnt happen this time but you kind of have to trust in the machine. DaCosta even admits that, at a certain point, she was well aware of what was coming and just had to embrace it. It was interesting because there was a certain point when I was like, Ok, this isnt going to be the movie that I pitched or even the first version of the movie that I shot so I realized that this is now an experience and its learning curve and it really makes you stronger as a filmmaker in terms of your ability to navigate, she said. We get the sense that, if you were one of DaCostas good friends and spoke with her in private, her feelings on the situation would probably be much less diplomatic. And rightfully so. She got thrown under the bus big time. But we love how she has seemingly risen above it, put it behind her, and now considers it a valuable learning experience on her Hollywood journey. One that will next take her to the zombie-infested coasts of the United Kingdom as she helms 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, out in January 2026. Want more io9 news? Senvag Park, located in the old town of Panevys, Lithuania, underwent a major renovation in 2022, transforming it into one of the city's key landmarks. The red brick loop path around the pond has become the most popular spot for recreational walks, while new piers, bridges, and wooden terraces allow visitors to get closer to the water. The small island serves as a cozy retreat for gatherings and sunbathing.Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture! The renovation of Senvag Park was crucial in reshaping Panevys' image. Once known for its industrial past and history of criminal activity, Panevys has become an appealing place to live, offering great public spaces and a vibrant cultural life. This transformation began with the revitalization of public areas in the historical center. While Senvag was always a scenic spot, decades of neglect had left it with deteriorating infrastructure and limited appeal. Accessibility was also a challenge due to height differences and numerous stairs.Save this picture!Save this picture! The new design for Senvag Park had several key goals: establish a fresh city identity, improve accessibility, bring people closer to the water, and foster community. The main goal was to create a new city landmark, a "postcard" destination that would inspire residents to see the city with fresh eyes. The red brick loop path, connecting various points of interest and pocket spaces, quickly became a recognizable feature for leisurely strolls. Improving accessibility was also a priority. Height differences and stairs had made the park difficult to navigate, particularly for those with mobility challenges. Newly designed paths, ramps, bridges, and cycling routes now link neighborhoods, viewpoints, and public buildings, making the park much more accessible.Save this picture!Another objective was to bring people closer to the water. Piers, bridges, and terraces now encourage interaction with the lake, while the island offers a peaceful space for relaxation and sunbathing. Most importantly, Senvag Park is a space for the community. It includes playgrounds, a sports area, cafe terraces, and spaces for markets and festivals. Panevys is known for its sporting events, especially swimming and triathlons, many of which take place in the park. Local triathletes even helped design the park, providing input on pier sizes and distances, ensuring it suited sports competitions.Save this picture! With its simple design, improved routes, use of natural materials, and increased greenery, Senvag has become a favorite among residents. It's now a hub for festivals, daily meetings, and walks, while also attracting tourists. This surge in activity has led to more cafes, events, and overall livability. Senvag Park truly is the heart of Panevys. In 2024, the project was awarded among the five best architectural works in Lithuania in the biennial exhibition "Introspection".Save this picture!Project gallerySee allShow lessProject locationAddress:A. 97-year-old Galpagos tortoise becomes first-time mom
Only 44 Western Santa Cruz Giant tortoises lived in US zoos prior to the new hatchlings. Credit: Philadelphia ZooAt 97 years old, Mommy is the Philadelphia Zoos oldest resident. But despite her name, the critically endangered Galpagos tortoise has only just become a motherand set a world record in the process. According to the Zoos April 3 announcement, Mommy and her nonagenarian partner Abrazzo recently welcomed four new hatchlings into the world. Prior to their new tiny tortoises, Mommy and Abrazzo were two of only 44 Western Santa Cruz Giant tortoises in US zoos. Mommy is now one of the most genetically valuable tortoises in the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) Species Survival Plan and the oldest first-time mother of her kind.Mommy arrived at the Zoo in 1932, meaning anyone that has visited the Zoo for the last 92 years has likely seen her, said Philadelphia Zoo President and CEO Jo-Elle Mogerman. Philadelphia Zoos vision is that those hatchlings will be a part of a thriving population of Galapagos tortoises on our healthy planet 100 years from now.The Galpagos once hosted 15 unique tortoise species across seven of its islands. After centuries of human exploitation, two of the 15 species are now extinct, while the rest range from critically endangered to vulnerable. Galpagos tortoises are the largest tortoises in the world, with males regularly weighing 500 pounds and the females averaging about half that. The cold-blooded reptiles spend a couple hours each day sunbathing and another 8 to 9 hours either snacking or shuffling around at their famously slow pace. Their laidback lifestyle and genetics (as well as a lack of native predators) allow Galpagos tortoises to regularly reach 100 to 200 years of age.It took multiple attempts for Mommy to reach the milestone moment. She has laid three clutches since 2023, none of which resulted in viable eggs. In November 2024, she laid 16 billiard ball-sized eggs that she then buried in the sand. Galpagos tortoise sex is determined by the temperature at which they incubateanything below 82.4 degrees Fahrenheit results in males, while anything above 85.1 degrees Fahrenheit produces females. To help guide the chances for increased genetic diversity, the Zoos reptile and amphibian team made sure to resituate Mommys clutch so that half would be male and half female if they all hatched. Individual eggs can take anywhere from four to eight months to hatch, and the first of the new quartet arrived on February 27.The tortoise hatchlings will make their public debut on April 23. Credit: Philadelphia Zoo This is a monumental achievement for our animal care team that worked diligently to provide the right conditions for Mommy to lay her eggs and for the eggs to incubate and successfully hatch, said Lauren Augustine, the Philadelphia Zoos director of herpetology and birds. Until now, Mommys genes were not represented in the AZA population, making these offspring extremely important in the protection of this species. The four hatchlings will spend the next few weeks under the care and observation of the Zoos team of experts before making their public debut on April 23. Visitors will have at least five years to swing by and say hello before they potentially move to different facilities, where they will hopefully help usher in more generations of the critically endangered animal.

How U.S. public health cuts could raise risks of infectious diseases
Health & MedicineHow U.S. public health cuts could raise risks of infectious diseasesPublic health experts warn that the deep funding cuts and layoffs make us more vulnerable Employees of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services line up to enter the Mary E. Switzer Memorial Building in Washington on April 2 as the Trump administration's plans to cut 10,000 jobs from the departments roster were kicking in. Many of those cuts could hamper the ability to fight infectious diseases.Anna Moneymaker/Getty ImagesBy Tina Hesman Saey8 seconds agoAt 6 a.m. on March 25, Philip Huang, director of the Dallas County Health and Human Services department, got a devastating email. Millions of dollars in federal grants that the health agency had were suddenly gone. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services had just rescinded about $12 billion from thousands of state and local health agencies, including Huangs. Some of that money was part of a COVID-19 recovery program that health departments were using to beef up testing for many diseases, including bird flu and measles as well as COVID-19. In Dallas, it was going toward a public health lab to expand such testing. Also on the chopping block: a grant that paid for staff providing childhood vaccines, including the measles vaccine, Huang said March 28 in a news briefing to discuss ongoing Trump administration cuts to public health.Sign up for our newsletterWe summarize the week's science breakthroughs every Thursday.
