The planned building is a three-story steel-framed structure located just a few minutes' walk from Kumagaya Station. Built approximately 60 years ago, the building has served various purposes, with the first and second floors being used as tenant spaces. About two years ago, the owner rented the first floor and opened a beauty salon. However, as the space became too cramped, they decided to renovate the second floor. The owner's request was to create a new esthetic space on the second floor, in addition to the hair salon, to accommodate facial treatments and other beauty services.Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture! The second floor had previously been used as a restaurant and a mahjong parlor. The existing mosaic-patterned flooring still bears cigarette burns and scratches, which create an intriguing texture reminiscent of the accumulation of time. The steel beams also retain traces of the construction process, including the footprints of the workers and layout markings. The initial goal was to preserve as much of these existing materials as possible while creating a new space using fresh materials. The new materials were not chosen to contrast with the existing ones but rather to harmonize with them and reflect their presence. The salon specializes in color styling, so it was important to select materials that would enhance the colorful styles and hairstyles of the customers. This led to focusing on gray and silver.Save this picture!Art historian Atsushi Okada discusses the appeal of graya color generally considered impersonal and anonymousby referencing historical philosophers and painters: "However, from a different perspective, gray can be seen as a color open to infinite nuances. It possesses the potential to express subtle gradations, the play of light and shadow, and delicate variations between light and dark. Precisely because it lacks any inherent characteristics, gray holds the latent power to take on any color." (1) Okada also states, "The positive significance of gray lies in the fact that it cannot be definitively described as one specific color. Instead of asserting itself, it reflects and returns what it receives from others. Gray embodies individuality without personality, impersonality with character."Save this picture!Although these statements primarily concern gray, the concept of a reflective, non-personal existence that can take on any color could also apply to silver. In other words, gray (or silver) can be considered a special color that does not have a fixed hue but rather reflects its environment and those around it. With this in mind, we used square studs (45 mm x 65 mm)typically employed as wall substratesfor the partition walls in the renovation. These studs are inexpensive and, as industrial products, have a relatively consistent quality. The galvanized steel sheets subtly reflect the surroundings, and the slight differences in the finish of the galvanization create delicate gradations.Save this picture!Save this picture! The plan required separating the hair salon from the esthetic space. However, the owner also wanted customers visiting one area to become interested in the other. To achieve this, we designed the partition walls like louvers: in areas where visibility needed to be blocked, the studs were densely arranged; in areas where a sense of presence was desired, they were spaced more sparsely. This design allowed the walls to function as both partitions and louvers.Save this picture!Save this picture! For the raised floor finish, we used gray vinyl tiles. The walls were painted in two shades of grayone slightly lighter than the floor and one almost white. These subtle variations in tone and reflective qualities cause the space to shift gently with changes in light and human movement. Since the use of materials and structure up to this point felt rather rigid, we incorporated acrylic panels as accents between the studs. When sunlight enters through the windows, shadows from the acrylic stretch like lines across the gray floor. The acrylic panels are simply clamped to the studs with magnets, allowing easy removal and replacement. We envision changing the color of the acrylic according to seasonal themes.Save this picture! In this project, we consciously used gray and silver materials. Including previous projects, I have employed gray and silver in many architectural works. As Okada suggests, I am drawn to their "latent potential to take on any color." I intend to continue exploring the possibilities of gray and silver materials.1, 2: Atsushi Okada, The Aesthetics of Translucent, Iwanami Shoten, 2010Save this picture!Project gallerySee allShow lessProject locationAddress:Saitama, JapanLocation to be used only as a reference. • Geesekeepers protect Canada goose nesting at Wrigley Field
    www.popsci.com
The Chicago Cubs welcomed a new fan to opening weekend at Wrigley Field: a Canada goose. Fans spotted the goose near the stadiums outfield bleachers sitting in greenery boxes. During Saturdays game against the San Diego Padres, a team of geesekeepers kept the area clear of human fans, according to Block Club Chicago. There's a section of the center field bleachers blocked off because a goose has made a next in the planter boxes below the scoreboard. #wildlifeofwrigley pic.twitter.com/BGxzfjQuOT Bleacher Jeff (@BleacherJeff) April 5, 2025Canada goose nesting season typically goes from mid-March through April. Geese lay an average of five eggs per clutch and the incubation period typically lasts 28 days. Officials have not confirmed if the goose seen at Wrigley has laid eggs or is just a fan of stadium nachos and baseball. According to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the Migratory Bird Treaty Act (MBTA) protects Canada geese. The law states: No person may take (kill), possess, import, export, transport, sell, purchase, barter, or offer for sale, any migratory bird, or the parts, nests, or eggs of such bird except as may be permitted under the terms of a valid permit In Illinois, it is not allowed to capture and relocate Canada geese to another site within the state. A state permit is also required to destroy a nest or eggs. The Cubs have turbulent history with animals. Superstitious fans blamed a 71-year World Series appearance drought on the Curse of the Billy Goat, a curse that started when officials allegedly kicked out a local tavern owner of Game 4 of the 1945 World Series at Wrigley alongside his pet goat. And in 1969, frustrated fans held a black cat responsible for the team losing a tight division race to the New York Mets. [Related: The science of superstition]Thankfully, the bird seems to have not jinxed the team: The Cubs are 2-0 at home with the goose stationed in the bleachers. Weve reached out to the Chicago Cubs and will update this story if or when we hear back.Mama Goose and eggs have shut down this entire section in #Wrigley bleachers #Cubs pic.twitter.com/mocuMZMqVU Chicago Finance (@FinanceChicago) April 5, 2025The post Geesekeepers protect Canada goose nesting at Wrigley Field appeared first on Popular Science.

Abstract photos by Rus Khasanov.Deliriumis an exploration of the boundaries of perception through the deconstruction of abstract photography. In this project, I use standard Photoshop tools not for retouching, but for the destruction and transformation of images. Each frame undergoes a series of manipulations, revealing hidden structures, replacing reality with digital artifacts, and creating a new visual language. This is not just image processing?it is a method of layering the visible, a search for chaos within form, a play with perception where the original image is dismantled to attain a new depth of meaning.

  • Launch and Scale Your AI Organization
    medium.com
Launch and Scale Your AI Organization5 min readJust now--You have decided on your first AI initiative, the budget is approved, and its time to kick off the hiring process. But whom should we hire, and what roles do we need in an AI team? We dont have enough skilled people available in the market, so as a leader, you should be very clear about hiring the right people for your AI team. This blog covers the various components of an AI system, the skills required for these components, and different strategies for setting up and scaling the team.Like any product/service, an AI system also has a producer and a consumer. We will cover the producer and the team creating the AI models or systems for others to consume. The blog has been divided into four sections:1. Identify and define the AI components2. Identify roles in a team who can work on these AI components3. Onboarding strategies of the AI team members4. Scaling the AI teamSetting up AI infra, tooling, and deployment is also critical for the AI organization; I will cover it in a separate blog.As I said at the start of the blog, the first step is defining the business problem, how we are trying to solve it with AI, and what the success criteria are. Dont start the AI project just because everyone else is doing it. There are different ways of finding out the AI use casesa topic for a future blog.Identify and define the AI components:An AI system consists of multiple components, and as a leader, you should identify and define these components, e.g.Data collection and management: Identify, collect, clean, and manage the raw dataData preprocessing, cleaning, and transformation: Transform the raw data and make it ready for the AI modelsModel selection and development: choose the AI algorithm and build the modelModel training and optimization: Train the model with data, optimize it, and improve accuracy.Model validation and testing: Evaluate the model performance and fine-tune it using real-world data.Model deployment & Integration: Deploy the AI model into production and integrate it with other systems, as required.Model monitoring and continuous learning: Continuous monitoring, retraining and improving the model's accuracy.Data Infrastructure: Ensuring the efficiency and performance of the system at scaleGovernance and Ethics: Fairness, transparency, compliance, and responsible AI.Roles in an AI team:We need a group of engineers who can form an AI team and work on these components to complete the end-to-end system.AI Product Manager: This person defines the business objectives and aligns the AI systems outcomes with the company vision. You may want to add SMEs, domain experts, BA to support the product manager.Data Engineers design and maintain the data infrastructure, pipeline, and warehouse. They are responsible for collecting and cleaning the data while maintaining its quality and consistency.Data Scientists: Transform the data, design AI models, conduct experiments, and extract insights.ML Engineers (including the MLOps): Develop, test, deploy, optimize, and monitor the models.AI Engineers: This includes team members responsible for UI design, testing, Cloud infra management, and creating interfaces and API for consumers.Ethics, Governance and Compliance: Responsible for fairness, bias mitigation, and regulatory compliance.Like any product development team, the AI team members should also have the domain expertise to identify, clean, and manage the correct data. Relying solely on the AI Product Manager for this expertise may be insufficient. In the next part of the article, I will cover examples and case studies of organisations following different team structures.Onboarding strategies:The roles have been identified, so the next step in onboarding these engineers is to build an in-house team, outsource the work, or create a mix of permanent and consultants. Each mode has pros and cons, so the decision is yours depending on your context.1. Outsourcing may be the best option if you lack expertise and need a quick turnaround.2. A hybrid model should work if you want to do POCs or experiments while developing in-house capabilities.3. However, if you have decided on AI as your long-term strategy or are working on a proprietary product or high-security project, setting up an in-house team is the right choice. In the next part of the article, I will cover examples and case studies of different organisations that follow different onboarding strategies.Scaling the AI team:Scaling an AI organization is not just about hiring more people, it is about structuring those people in different teams and business units. The best AI organization dont just scale AI, they scale it the right way. There are several scaling models, based on your business needs and organization structure you can decide.Centralized AI team: This is similar to the traditional CoE, keeping AI under one roof. The CoE manages all AI initiatives and teams across the company request AI solutions from them. This ensures standardization, compliance, and governance across AI projects. As the demand grows the CoE may become a bottleneck.Decentralized AI teams: An organization may have multiple business units, and in this approach, each BU has its own AI team working on its specific AI projects. This allows each BU more autonomy and faster innovation per department. However, this may create duplication of efforts and inconsistent AI governance.Hybrid Model: This is the best of both worlds. A central AI CoE sets standards, infrastructure, and best practices. Each business unit is aligned with the CoE for governance and consistency while focusing on its specific projects and stakeholders.AI as a Platform: AI experts build re-usable AI models, APIs, and tools; business teams integrate these capabilities into their workflows without needing much AI expertise. This requires high AI infrastructure investment and strong platform engineering expertise.Key takeaways for leaders:The AI initiative should start with the business objective in focusAI teams should align with the business goals.Start with a small, focused AI team before scalingChoose the right scaling model based on your organization's needsDo not ignore the ethics, governance, and security concerns when scaling. Are you setting up your first AI team?Or are you planning to scale your team? This blog was initially published on AgileWoW
