ARSTECHNICA.COMThe gangs back to wrap up a mission in MI: Final Reckoning trailer"Our lives are the sum of our choices." The gangs back to wrap up a mission in MI: Final Reckoning trailer "If we want to bring the world back from the brink, we have to deal with him." Jennifer Ouellette Apr 7, 2025 2:28 pm | 0 Credit: Paramount Pictures Credit: Paramount Pictures Story textSizeSmallStandardLargeWidth *StandardWideLinksStandardOrange* Subscribers only Learn more Tom Cruise is back for what may (or may not) be his final turn as Ethan Hunt in Mission: Impossible: Final Reckoning. After giving CinemaCon attendees a sneak peek last week, Paramount Pictures has publicly released the trailer for Mission Impossible: The Final Reckoning, the eighth installment of the blockbuster spy franchise starring Tom Cruise as IMF agent Ethan Hunt, and a sequel to the events that played out in 2023's Mission: Impossible: Dead Reckoning. This may, or may not, end up being Cruise's last film in the franchise; everyone's being pretty cagey about that question. But the trailer certainly gives us everything we've come to expect from the Mission Impossible films: high stakes, global political intrigue, and of course, lots and lots of spectacular stunt work, including Cruise hanging precariously mid-air from a 1930s Boeing Stearman biplane.(Spoilers for Mission: Impossible: Dead Reckoning below.)For those whose memory of Dead Reckoning's plot is dim, Hunt and his team became embroiled in a global chase to find the two keys capable of controlling a rogue sentient AI dubbed The Entity. Both were needed to unlock a chamber aboard a Russian stealth submarine that contained The Entity's source code, so the possessor of those keys would be able to control or (preferably) destroy the AI. Hunt managed to acquire the two keys and fled by paraglider, reuniting with his BFF and fellow field agent Benji (Simon Pegg), intending to complete the mission and shut down The Entity.Given that Final Reckoning is a continuation of that film, naturally Cruise and Pegg aren't the only returning cast members. Also reprising their roles are Ving Rhames as IMF computer technician Luther Stickell; Hayley Atwell as thief-turned-IMF agent Grace; Vanessa Kirby as black market arms dealer Alanna Mitsopolis (aka the White Widow); Esai Morales as Gabriel, an assassin who serves as The Entity's liaison; Pom Klementieff as Gabriel's fellow assassin who joined forces with Hunt after Gabriel betrayed her; Angela Bassett as former CIA director and now US President Erika Sloane; Henry Czerny as former IMF director Eugene Kittridge, who now heads the CIA; and Rolf Saxon as CIA analyst William Donloe.Mark Gatiss and Indira Varma also return as the heads of the NSA and DIA, respectively. Additions to the cast include Mariela Garriga as a woman from Ethan's past; Nick Offerman as the chair of the Joint Chiefs of Staff; Shea Whigham and Greg Tarzan Davis as US intelligence agents Jasper Briggs and Degas, respectively; Frederick Schmidt as Alanna's brother Zola; and Holt McCallany as the secretary of Defense. Janet McTeer and Hannah Waddingham will also appear in as-yet-undisclosed roles.Mission: Impossible: The Final Reckoning hits theaters on May 23, 2025. It's one of the most expensive films ever made, with an estimated budget of about $400 million, so Paramount needs a big box office take to turn a profit. Dead Reckoning, despite critical raves and a global box office of $571 million, was deemed a disappointment, so that gives you an idea of just how high the bar to profitability could be. Then again, Final Reckoning won't be going up against the "Barbenheimer" juggernaut that dominated the industry in the summer of 2023. Here's hoping Hunt and his IMF team are up to the task. WWW.BUSINESSINSIDER.COMTrump tariffs are all about TaiwanChinese aircraft carriers Liaoning and Shandong in formation exercise in the South China Sea Sun Xiang/Xinhua via Getty Images 2025-04-07T18:39:19Z SaveSaved Read in app This story is available exclusively to Business Insider subscribers. Become an Insider and start reading now.Have an account? Tariffs are an attempt by Trump to reorder the global economy away from China manufacturing.Taiwan and TSMC are at the heart of the current system of interconnected, global supply chains.Ben Thompson warns that a Chinese invasion of Taiwan would make last week look tame.In a world already shaken by economic shocks from the pandemic to sweeping tariffs there's one scenario that would dwarf them all: a Chinese invasion of Taiwan. This is the hypothetical Ben Thompson floats in the latest edition of Stratechery, a newsletter widely followed by tech industry insiders. An invasion wouldn't just be a military conflict; it would be a systemic rupture in the global economic order that underpins everything from iPhones to inflation forecasts.Thompson reckons China would prevail militarily. The larger story isn't about who controls Taipei it's about what happens when the world's most essential supply chains are shattered. Taiwan isn't just any island; it's home to TSMC, the company responsible for manufacturing the most advanced semiconductors on Earth. Take that away, and the modern tech ecosystem buckles taking with it the digital infrastructure of daily life. This is so important that there's even a theory quietly discussed among global security experts that Taiwan could threaten to destroy its giant chip fabs as a way to deter China from invading.Thompson argues that regardless of who wins militarily, the economic result is the same: China, the global factory, is effectively cut off. Taiwan's chip output vanishes. Global trade grinds lower. Inflation surges. Markets tank.Recall the 2020 COVID supply chain chaos or last week's market turmoil from Trump's tariff barrage now magnify that impact exponentially."A war over Taiwan," Thompson wrote on Monday, "would put all of these to shame."Is war the only answer to resetting the system?Of course, it's not clear if, or when, China would invade Taiwan. And even if it did invade, it would face challenges, according to defense writer Michael Peck. But what's particularly striking is Thompson's framing: War might not just break the system it might be the only way to reset it. The post-World War II economic order, rebooted by Bretton Woods and supercharged by China's entry into global markets, is showing its age. The US traded industrial capability for cheap goods and ballooning deficits. American manufacturing jobs vanished, supply chains lengthened, and the economic resilience of the US heartland hollowed out. (These are the areas where JD Vance's anti-globalization message really resonates, by the way.)Trump's tariffs clumsy, politically divisive, and economically painful might still be preferable to waiting for a war to force change. As Thompson notes, the current system can't be fixed without a stomach for hard trade-offs, and America seems unwilling to take the hit until it's forced to.So we return to the Taiwan question if China invades, or how close we come. The prudent path, Thompson suggests, may be to pull China deeper into economic interdependence, betting that shared prosperity can delay or prevent disaster. But if that gamble fails, the cost won't just be measured in GDP it'll be in decades of lost stability, broken industries, and a new global order forged not in peace, but in fire.Recommended video0 Comments 0 Shares 27 Views

METRO.CO.UKNintendo Switch 2 isnt bringing back the eShop music and were fumingThe day the music died was quite a while ago now (Nintendo)The days of eShop bops are officially over, as Nintendo explains why the music will remain switched off on Switch 2.The Nintendo Switch may have largely saved the company, after the financial failure of the Wii U, but the console was noticeably stripped back in terms of personality and features. One option lost in the generational jump was the Nintendo eShop music, which started on the Wii and which has continued to live on with fans through remixes and TikTok clips. While some hoped the music might return for the Switch 2, it seems Nintendo prioritises practicality over fun in the grim darkness of 2025.Unlike back then, the eShop now has lots of videos that are showcasing the games, Kouchi Kawamoto, Nintendo Switch 2 producer, told Polygon when asked about the return of tunes to the eShop. We didnt want to intrude on that, so we dont have music there. While that is an understandable reason, it still feels like a bit of a bum note but maybe the Switch 2 will have more personality in its user interface elsewhere. We didnt get to see that at the recent preview showcase, where nothing was shown of the eShop. The music might be dead on Switch 2s eShop, but Nintendo has said the consoles storefront will definitely run better, as its not popular with fans.More TrendingSpeaking to press in New York about the eShop after the Switch 2 Direct, Kawamoto said: I wanted to make sure that it was a smooth experience. That the scrolling of the list doesnt stall, that its very smooth, pages load fast.A number of new details have emerged about the Switch 2 recently, including the absence of Hall Effect joysticks in the Joy-Cons and the lack of system-wide achievements. The Nintendo Switch 2 is set to launch on June 5, 2025, with some pre-orders up now. However, if youre in the US, the recent tariffs have caused Nintendo to delay pre-orders indefinitely as it assesses the situation. GIZMODO.COMJenna Ortega Shares a Knife-Slim Bit of Insight Into Her Scream ExitJenna Ortegas star has long since elevated beyond the Scream seriesshe has Wednesday season two coming up, co-starred in Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, and is in current A24 release Death of a Unicorn, to name more credits on her ever-growing resume. But her exit from the popular slasher franchise came at such a fraught moment, not longer after co-star Melissa Barrera was fired for social media posts in support of Palestine, made people wonder exactly what happened behind the scenes. At the time, there was speculation that Ortegas Wednesday filming schedule created a conflict with the prospective Scream 7, though it was understood thered be a longer delay between parts six and seven than thered been between five (which released January 2022) and six (March 2023). The directing team of Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett had handed the reins over to Christopher Landon, who ended up departing the project himself after Ortega left. OG Scream head Kevin Williamson come aboard last yearScream 7 should finally hit theaters in February 2026and has been busily adding former Ghostfaces and other past characters into the cast. Though Ortegas character survived Scream VI, and despite the changing of the guard with Williamson directing, the star isnt coming back. In a new interview with the Cut, she addressed her departure, offering a few more details. It had nothing to do with pay or scheduling, Ortega said, debunking the earlier Wednesday scheduling conflicts story. It had more to do with Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett moving on from the next Scream entryand the Barrera controversy. The Melissa stuff was happening, and it was all kind of falling apart. If Scream VII wasnt going to be with that team of directors and those people I fell in love with, then it didnt seem like the right move for me in my career at the time. The Cut article underlines just how busy Ortega is even without any more Scream on her plate, with her Netflix series returning and turns in feature films, including Hurry Up Tomorrow with the Weeknd, Taika Waititis Klara and the Sun, and Cathy Yans The Gallerist. WWW.POPSCI.COMUranus has a longer day than astronomers thoughtGet the Popular Science daily newsletterSometimes, it feels like there is not enough time in the day here on Earth to get everything done. If human life existed on the planet Uranus, its likely the same phenomenon might happen. But now we know that a single day on Uranus is 28 seconds longer than astronomers first calculated in the 1980s. By using a more accurate set of measurements taken with the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope, it actually takes Uranus 17 hours, 14 minutes, and 52 seconds (not 17 hours, 14 minutes, and 24 seconds) to complete one full rotation. The findings are detailed in a study published April 7 in the journal Nature Astronomy. For astronomers, determining a planets interior rotation rate is challenging and scientists cant take direct measurements of Uranus. To try and solve this, the team on this study developed a new method to track the rotational motion of Uranus using the planets aurorae. Just like Earths northern and southern lights, these spectacular light displays are generated in its upper atmosphere by a surge of energetic particles near the planets magnetic poles. However, Uranus aurorae are a little different from those on Earth or the ones that occur on Jupiter or Saturn. Uranus aurorae behave in a unique and unpredictable manner, primarily due to the planets highly tilted magnetic field. This high tilt is significantly offset from its rotational axis, causing Uranus to essentially be lying on its side. The team used more than a decades worth of observations of Uranus unique aurorae taken with Hubble and refined the planets rotation period. This technique revealed that it completes a rotation 28 seconds longer than what was estimated during NASAs Voyager 2 flyby in 1986.Our measurement not only provides an essential reference for the planetary science community but also resolves a long-standing issue: previous coordinate systems based on outdated rotation periods quickly became inaccurate, making it impossible to track Uranus magnetic poles over time, Laurent Lamy, a study co-author and astronomer, said in a statement. With this new longitude system, we can now compare auroral observations spanning nearly 40 years and even plan for the upcoming Uranus mission. This visual showcases 3 images from the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope of the dynamic aurora on Uranus in October 2022. These observations were made by the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) and includes both visible and ultraviolet data. CREDIT: ESA/Hubble, NASA, L. Lamy, L. Sromovsky. ESA/Hubble, NASA, L. Lamy, L. SrAccording to the team, this breakthrough was possible due to the almost 35-year-old space telescopes long-term monitoring of the farthest planet from the sun. Over more than a decade, Hubble has regularly observed Uranus ultraviolet auroral emissions and this data enabled researchers to track the position of the magnetic poles with magnetic field models. The continuous observations from Hubble were crucial, said Lamy. Without this wealth of data, it would have been impossible to detect the periodic signal with the level of accuracy we achieved.Observing whats going on in Uranus magnetic field not only helps astronomers better understand Uranus magnetosphere, but also provide vital information for future uncrewed missions to the third largest planet in the solar system. In 2022, The Planetary Science Decadal Survey in the United States prioritized the Uranus Orbiter and Probe concept for future exploration. While that mission is not off the ground yet, thefindings from this study could set the stage for additional research that deepens our understanding of one of the solar systems most mysterious planets. It also highlights how the Hubble Space telescope and its ability to monitor a single celestial body for decades continues to be an indispensable tool.0 Comments 0 Shares 20 Views
