If there’s something gamers love in the fantasy genre, it’s when ancient beings are sealed inside cool swords, from which they can only whisper and beguile mortal beings. League of Legends takes this concept even further with the Darkin by creating a whole arsenal of evil weapons containing ancient evils. The Darkin had a rough start in the lore, but the constant cycle of Riot revising and retconning its previous works have led to them becoming one of the most fascinating groups in all of Runeterra. Recent lore revelations suggest that they’re about to become important in the ongoing storyline spun up by the conclusion to Arcane.Wait, what’s up with Noxus?Riot revamped the way seasons work in League of Legends to feel more like narrative events that take the time to explore factions. The first region to benefit from this was Noxus, where we learned more about LeBlanc and Vladimir, the Black Rose, and their ongoing schemes. At the end of the season start cinematic, “Bite Marks,” we see LeBlanc and Vladimir scheming in a direct follow-up to the Arcane finale.“Every new path seems to lead us closer to chaos. Perhaps we should focus on the opportunity that’s washed up on our shores,” says Vladimir, the hemomancer (or blood mage, for the uninitated) with a dark past. The two look at a mysterious rune formed on LeBlanc’s wall of mist and shadows, and Vladimir reacts with anger: “Darling, that is a step too far. Even for us.”We weren’t fully sure what “that” meant until LeBlanc’s new in-game update, which includes new voice lines. If she kills a Darkin in-game, she muses: “Almost too easy. Perhaps you’re not the weapon I seek after all.” On Wednesday, Riot released a new cinematic that follows up “Bite Marks” and the Demon’s Hand in-client card game from March, and it gives us more clarity on the Black Rose’s plans. A Darkin is seemingly hidden in Ionia, the first lands and another hugely popular region in League lore.The current Darkin canon that we have now is stitched together from a series of retcons and rewrites. Aatrox, who was originally released in 2013, had a vague backstory about being one of an ancient race, of which there were only five remaining. In the current lore, they are fallen god-warriors of a long-dead empire, twisted by trauma and an incredibly destructive force.Shurima is a setting of ruins, the remains of an ancient empire built around a celestial Sun Disc. The Sun Disc is millennia old, and it originally helped Shurima expand into a vast empire. One specific honor for the Shurimans was the ritual of Ascension. Noble figures and mighty warriors could be presented to the Sun Disc, and if found worthy, reincarnated into a massive combination of both man and beast. These would become the fabled god-warriors, the Ascended of Shurima, who inspired awe in any who beheld them. Eventually, the empire would fall in two terrible strokes. First, the emperor’s attempt at Ascension was sabotaged, cracking the Sun Disc and causing a catastrophic shockwave that devastated everything around it. Second, the people of Icathia rose up against the tyrannical emperor, and pulled upon the malignant powers of the Void. They failed, and now Icathia is a festering, extraplanar pit that threatens anyone who settles in southern Shurima.Those who had fought the Void called themselves the Sunborn, and they viciously fought to fill the power vacuum left by the emperor. Their conflict lasted for hundreds of years and threatened all of Runeterra. Even distant Camavor was so threatened that they sent Vladimir, their noble son, off to be a slave to one of these warlords — who are now known as the Darkin. The Darkin were petty and cruel, using war crimes and forbidden arts like blood magic to expand their reach.Image: Riot GamesUltimately, celestial mages schemed to murder a mass of the remaining Darkin, and then hunted down the survivors, trapping them in weapons. These weapons are prisons that keep their minds conscious and aware but with no physical form. The only chance for escape is a mortal host (or hosts, in the case of Varus and Naafiri) to seize the weapon out of ignorance or desperation. Vladimir killed his own Darkin captor, learned the secrets of blood magic, and escaped to the plains that would later become Noxus. This explains why he’s so hesitant to pursue the Darkin — he had one for a boss, and it didn’t work out well for anyone.So, what comes next?For the moment, we can assume that the Darkin storyline will be continued in season two. This suggests that Ionia will be the most likely destination for the next season of League of Legends, and we may see a Darkin champion emerge. It’s still early days, and Riot has yet to confirm anything about the next season, so all we can do is speculate. Then, over the weekend, Trump rescinded the tariffs imposed on the import of semiconductors and electronic items (including Apple's iPhones) from China, reducing the effective tariff rate on all Chinese imports to 104 percent. Despite the exemption from the reciprocal tariff rate of 145 percent, do note that the imports of semiconductors, smartphones, and other electronic items from China currently still remain subject to the original 20 percent IEEPA tariffs. Then, in a move that significantly enhances the prevailing confusion and uncertainty, the US Commerce Secretary, Howard Lutnick, announced that sectoral tariffs on pharmaceuticals, semiconductors, and electronic items were still in the pipeline, and would likely become effective in a month or so. This brings us to the crux of the matter. Wedbush's Dan Ives now feels that Trump has taken "the doomsday scenario off the table and tech stocks will rally tomorrow as investors can breathe a sigh of relief." Autonomous sensory meridian response, or ASMR, is a sensation where visual or auditory triggers fire off synapses in the brain that create a pleasant, calming feeling — colloquially referred to as “tingles.” The concept has made for a massive industry of content creators on YouTube and TikTok, all dedicated to helping viewers fall asleep, avoid panic attacks, or just relax by triggering ASMR.  But recently I’ve found that when I play certain games with my headphones plugged in, my tingles sneak up on me. I’m not the only one, either — there are entire YouTube channels dedicated to ASMR in video games. I’ve gotten ASMR from crouching through the grass in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, and the scraping sound of carving down a mountain in Lonely Mountain: Snow Riders makes the top of my head tickle. No promises, though — only about 20% of people get ASMR. But if you’re one of those people, these games just might become your new favorite ASMR triggers. Lonely Mountains: Snow Riders Lonely Mountains: Snow Riders is the game that gave me the idea to write this story. Whether it’s the sound of the wind whooshing past as you zoom down a mountain or the lovely snow-scraping sound when you cut a sharp corner, there is no shortage of possible ASMR triggers in this game. Best of all, there’s no background music — just the sound of riding down a mountain on some skis with nobody else around. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Breath of the Wild deserves to be on every “best of” list about video game foley sounds. The music alone might elicit ASMR, like when a hesitant piano note drops as you climb a mountain, but the environmental sounds are the ones that really give me tingles. Walking through brush, your feet crunching through snow, the sound of your gear jingling as you hop on your horse — just pop on some headphones and listen to the beautifully immersive soundscape in this game. PowerWash Simulator If you like wet sounds (don’t come for me, OK? This is a thing), PowerWash Simulator is your jam. I first got tingles from the sound of the soap washing away scum — which resembles playing-with-slime triggers I quite enjoy — but there are tons of lovely ASMR sounds in this game. I have found that the sound of the water itself can kill the vibe a bit, but the game’s settings are super customizable, so you can turn that off if it doesn’t work for you. Tiny Glade ASMRtists, the term commonly used to describe folks who make ASMR content, would probably be desperate to learn how Tiny Glade’s developers foley’d its “building a wall” sound. It sounds like rocks rolling against one another on a beach, or like sticking a microphone into a bowl of pebbles. Whatever it is, it makes my brain very happy, along with all the other lovely sounds in this chill sandbox game. The whoosh of erecting a new tree, the soft “baa” of a sheep, the plunk of water when you make a pond — it’s all as relaxing as the gameplay itself. A Little to the Left The iconic organization game A Little to the Left is filled with sounds of ceramic bowls being stacked, leaves shuffling around, and tools being organized into neat compartments. In this game, you’ll only hear those when you move items, though — it doesn’t quite give me the tingles, but the foley sounds are certainly ASMR-worthy for someone out there. Any Lego game The Lego video games might be my first experience of ASMR, long before I knew what it was. My favorite is Lego Star Wars, but all of the Lego games have amazing sounds of blocks breaking apart and minifigs walking on plastic and metal platforms. Unfortunately, these games aren’t really designed for a relaxing experience, and you can’t turn off the character dialogue. Nonetheless, nothing beats the sound of Legos moving around in a Lego bin — in a video game or in real life. Potion Craft Potion Craft is relaxing all around — the color scheme is neutral-toned, the gameplay doesn’t require any speed or quick reactions, and the sounds are to die for. You’ll play to the sounds of water pouring into your potion pot and bottles clinking together as you pick out products to sell to your customers. The music can get repetitive, though, so I’d recommend turning it off to get the best out of the game ASMR-wise.

As it said it would do earlier this year, Google has laid off hundreds of employees from its Platforms and Devices division, The Information reported. That part of the company, which employs over 25,000 people, houses its Pixel phones and smartwatches, Nest devices, the Android and ChromeOS platforms and Chrome browser. In January, Google offered buyouts to let them leave as part of a "voluntary exit plan."  "Since combining the platforms and devices teams last year, we've focused on becoming more nimble and operating more effectively and this included making some job reductions in addition to the voluntary exit program that we offered in January," a Google spokesperson told The Information. The Platform and Devices group was formed in April 2024 as a merger of two units, Platforms and Ecosystems and Devices and Services, with SVP Rick Osterloh put in charge. In January, he told employees that the buyouts were available "for those struggling to meet the demands of their role or those unhappy with the company's hybrid work setup." The decision to offer buyouts rather than immediately laying off workers was reportedly prompted by employee complaints over previous layoffs.  Meta also announced layoffs in January, and tech firms have been steadily laying off workers over the past couple of years.
