WWW.THEVERGE.COMOpenAI names new nonprofit ‘advisors’OpenAI has revealed the “advisors” for its new nonprofit commission: Dolores Huerta, Monica Lozano, Dr. Robert K. Ross, and Jack Oliver. The company says the four advisors will help “inform OpenAI’s philanthropic efforts,” according to an announcement on Tuesday. Huerta was a prominent labor activist during the 20th century, while Lozano was the president and CEO of the College Futures Foundation and is a member of Apple’s board of directors. Ross previously served as president and CEO of the health and wellness foundation The California Endowment, and OpenAI says Oliver is a “leader in government, technology, business and advocacy.” Their appointment comes just months after OpenAI announced its plan to shift into a for-profit company. Several former OpenAI employees opposed the change in a proposed amicus brief supporting Elon Musk’s lawsuit against the company, which accuses it of abandoning its original mission of helping humanity. A coalition of nonprofit, labor, and philanthropic leaders have also urged California Attorney General Rob Bonta to probe OpenAI’s transformation into a for-profit company. “As we’ve said, OpenAI’s nonprofit isn’t going anywhere—and this commission will be key to expanding its reach and impact,” OpenAI says in the announcement. “The commission’s goal is to help ensure that our nonprofit becomes a force multiplier for communities and mission-driven organizations tackling urgent global challenges—from health and education to public service and scientific discovery.”0 Commentarios 0 Acciones 14 Views

WWW.IGN.COMThis Beautiful Illustrated Edition of Eragon Has Dropped to a New Low Price on AmazonI've perused a surprising number of books about dragons in my time, but Eragon was one of the most impactful because I was just a kid when I first read it. The Inheritance Cycle was one of my first proper introductions into the fantasy genre as a whole and got me excited to read more in a way that I hadn't really experienced outside of Harry Potter. So when I found out that the illustrated edition of Eragon not only existed, but was also at it's lowest-ever price, I couldn't help but buy it for myself. The art I've seen in the preview for it looks incredible and seems to portray the story in a way that feels perfect for the series. The rich painted strokes from artist Sidharth Chaturvedi seem to really bring the images to life, and it seems like the perfect fit for my growing illustrated collection of some of my favorite fantasy books.Eragon: The Illustrated Edition Deal on AmazonLowest-Ever PriceEragon: The Illustrated Edition (The Inheritance Cycle)This is the first illustrated edition in the Inheritance Cycle, with an original release date of November 2023. Since its release, the price has dropped a few time but this price is the lowest we've ever seen. Newer illustrated editions, such as George R.R. Martin's upcoming Feast of Crows, can come at a high price and stay there for a long time. If you are thinking of adding this version of Eragon to your collection, there's never been a better time. That being said, it's also worth considering some of the other popular illustrated editions that come at a similar price. There's the Hunger Games Illustrated edition, which recently received a similar Amazon price reduction. And there's also a new upcoming Harry Potter interactive illustrated edition that was discounted as soon as it was available for preorder.See more popular illustrated editionsThe Hunger Games: Illustrated EditionSee it at AmazonHarry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (Interactive Illustrated Edition)See it at AmazonThe Hobbit Illustrated by the AuthorSee it at AmazonThe Last Wish: Illustrated Edition (The Witcher, 1)See it at AmazonWill There Be More Illustrated Editions in the Inheritance Cycle? One issue with buying illustrated editions is that there's no guarantee you'll be able to complete your set. While the illustrated edition of Eragon looks awesome, it came out almost two years ago and is still the only book in the series to receive this deluxe treatment. I did a bit of research about whether or not there's been any word from Christopher Paolini about new illustrated editions, but the only thing I could find was this Reddit thread discussing the topic. Basically, there is no official news about Eldest, Brisinger, and Inheritance getting illustrated versions, but if this one sells well enough they will make more of them.Outside of the books, Eragon will be receiving a Disney+ TV series that will likely breathe new life into the books. The upcoming series does not yet have a release date, but it is still on track to happen.0 Commentarios 0 Acciones 15 Views

THEHACKERNEWS.COMU.S. Govt. Funding for MITRE's CVE Ends April 16, Cybersecurity Community on AlertApr 16, 2025Ravie LakshmananVulnerability Management / Incident Response The U.S. government funding for non-profit research giant MITRE to operate and maintain its Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVE) program will expire Wednesday, an unprecedented development that could shake up one of the foundational pillars of the global cybersecurity ecosystem. The 25-year-old CVE program is a valuable tool for vulnerability management, offering a de facto standard to identify, define, and catalog publicly disclosed security flaws using CVE IDs. Yosry Barsoum, MITRE's vice president and director of the Center for Securing the Homeland (CSH), said its funding to "develop, operate, and modernize CVE and related programs, such as the Common Weakness Enumeration (CWE), will expire." "If a break in service were to occur, we anticipate multiple impacts to CVE, including deterioration of national vulnerability databases and advisories, tool vendors, incident response operations, and all manner of critical infrastructure," Barsoum noted in a letter sent to CVE Board Members. However, Barsoum pointed out that the government continues to "make considerable efforts" to support MITRE's role in the program and that MITRE remains committed to CVE as a global resource. The CVE program was launched in September 1999 and has been run by MITRE with sponsorship from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA). In response to the move, cybersecurity firm VulnCheck, which is a CVE Numbering Authority (CNA), has announced that it is proactively reserving 1,000 CVEs for 2025 to help fill the void. "A service break would likely degrade national vulnerability databases and advisories," Jason Soroko, Senior Fellow at Sectigo, said in a statement shared with The Hacker News. "This lapse could negatively affect tool vendors, incident response operations, and critical infrastructure broadly. MITRE emphasizes its continued commitment but warns of these potential impacts if the contracting pathway is not maintained." Tim Peck, Senior Threat Researcher at Securonix, told The Hacker News that a lapse could have massive consequences for the cybersecurity ecosystem where CNAs and defenders may be unable to obtain or publish CVEs, causing delays in vulnerability disclosures. "Additionally, the Common Weakness Enumeration (CWE) project is vital for software weakness classification and prioritization," Peck said. "Its halt would affect secure coding practices and risk assessments. The CVE program is a foundational infrastructure. It's not just a nice to have 'referenceable list,' it's a primary resource for vulnerability coordination, prioritization and response efforts across the private sector, government and open source." WORLDARCHITECTURE.ORGRed pigmented gridded structure defines village-like Mexican sport facility by Sordo MadalenoSubmitted by WA Contents Red pigmented gridded structure defines village-like Mexican sport facility by Sordo Madaleno Mexico Architecture News - Apr 16, 2025 - 05:16 html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40/loose.dtd" Interdisciplinary architecture, urban, and interior design firm Sordo Madaleno has created a sport facility for one of Mexico’s most long-lived football teams Atlas FC based in Guadalajara, Mexico.Named Academia Atlas, the 8,300-square-metre building was envisioned as a linear, gridded structure with monochromatic pigmented-red color to create a powerful sense of place on site. The village-like sports facility features street passages, intimate courtyards, and small town garden squares that "surprisingly" invite visitors into the structure. The structure accommodates six professional football fields and features clubhouses, applied sport science facilities, and administrative offices. An important function of the project is to provide housing and resources for young players from underprivileged backgrounds.Sordo Madaleno collaborated with Atlas FC and Orlegi Sports to convert the seven-hectare site into a collegiate-style campus bustling with vibrant, young, and healthy individuals connecting through the nation's most popular sport, utilizing locally-sourced materials and traditional construction methods.A modular system was used as the basis for designing the sports facility. Open-air spaces are formed at the intersections of elemental columns and beams, creating a grid-like effect as they frame the building. In the building's areas of greater density, the reticulated roof functions as a brise-soleil. Thanks to this modular system, the club can adapt or expand its interior spaces as needed in the future, all while making optimal use of materials for the project. The building encompasses external areas that offer softly shaded pathways throughout the complex, all within its designated rectangular volume of 8,300 square meters. They resemble street passages, intimate courtyards, and small-town garden squares. External staircases that punctuate these areas establish a robust connection and cultivate a sense of fluidity between the interior and exterior environments. The area for spectators also facilitates this link between interior and exterior along the western façade. It proved to be a highly adaptable space; when unoccupied, it functions as either a contemplative area or a relaxation spot. During matches, family, friends, and the general public gather to support their favorite players, turning the area into a lively hub. Athletes warm up using this stair-like structure during training."We wanted to create an enclosure within a vast flat landscape that is highly exposed to the elements, and we wanted to bring green areas inside Academia Atlas to show how important planting and wildlife are in giving us a sense of belonging somewhere," said Fernando Sordo Madaleno. The use of a single shade of red throughout the project connects to the identity of the football team and to traditional Mexican brickwork. The structure of pigmented concrete was cast on-site, whereas the floor’s concrete pre-slabs were pre-cast to allow for quick assembly on-site. The red bricks were specially designed for the building regarding proportion, dimensions, color, and structural functions. This led to the contractor taking advantage of a considerable reduction in waste throughout the construction process. The landscape design aimed to include only endemic species, allowing it to flourish in the environment throughout the various seasons. Additionally, the use of native species makes the planting low-maintenance and reduces its water consumption. It is encouraged to plant some things to climb the structure, which introduces a purposeful timelessness that helps establish a strong sense of place on a site lacking immediate scale or cultural reference points."Academia Atlas is about creating the right environment and facilities for the future development of young players making entry into elite football more widely accessible in Mexico," said Alejandro Irarragorri Gutiérrez Orlegi Sports Chairman."The project has also been conceived by us together with Sordo Madaleno to create jobs in Jalisco through local procurement processes while giving the region an important landmark promoting the role of sport in society," Gutiérrez added. The project serves as an intriguing case study on the application of a rigid modular system measuring 8.4 meter by 8.4 meter to create a building that is flexible, dynamic, and engaging due to its rich spatial qualities. It also serves as a model for how to redefine the building typologies of conventional sports architecture.Site planAxonometric drawingConcept planConcept plan structureGround floor planFirst floor planSectionSectionHand drawingSketchHand drawingIn preparation of Asturias' bid to host the FIFA World Cup in 2030, Sordo Madaleno and Orlegi Sports unveiled a proposal to renovate and remodel the El Molinón stadium, which is home to Real Sporting de Gijón. WWW.THEREGISTER.COMUncle Sam abruptly turns off funding for CVE program. Yes, that CVE programUS government funding for the world's CVE program – the centralized Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures database of product security flaws – ends Wednesday. The 25-year-old CVE program plays a huge role in vulnerability management. It is responsible overseeing the assignment and organizing of unique CVE ID numbers, such as CVE-2014-0160 and CVE-2017-5754, for specific vulnerabilities, in this case OpenSSL's Heartbleed and Intel's Meltdown, so that when referring to particular flaws and patches, everyone is agreed on exactly what we're all talking about. It is used by companies big and small, developers, researchers, the public sector, and more as the primary system for identifying and squashing bugs. When multiple people find the same hole, CVEs are useful for ensuring everyone is working toward that one specific issue. CVE is a cornerstone of cybersecurity, and any gaps in CVE support will put our critical infrastructure and national security at unacceptable risk While the whole world's vulnerability management efforts aren't going to descend into chaos overnight, there is a concern that in a month or two they may. The lack of US government funding means that, unless someone else steps in to fill the gap, this standardized system for naming and tracking vulnerabilities may falter or shut down, new CVEs may no longer be published, and the program's website may go offline. Not-for-profit outfit MITRE has a contract with the US Department of Homeland Security to operate the CVE program, and on Tuesday the group confirmed this arrangement has not been renewed. This comes as the Trump administration scours around the federal government for costs to trim. "On Wednesday, April 16, funding for MITRE to develop, operate, and modernize the Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures Program and related programs, such as the Common Weakness Enumeration Program, will expire," Yosry Barsoum, MITRE's vice president and director at the Center for Securing the Homeland, told The Register. "The government continues to make considerable efforts to support MITRE's role in the program and MITRE remains committed to CVE as a global resource," Barsoum added. The Common Weakness Enumeration program is a centrally managed database of bug types. The expiration came to light after a letter sent to CVE program board members was leaked on Bluesky. In that memo, Barsoum confided: If a break in service were to occur, we anticipate multiple impacts to CVE, including deterioration of national vulnerability databases and advisories, tool vendors, incident response operations, and all manner of critical infrastructure. Historical CVE records will at least remain available at GitHub. "CVE is a cornerstone of cybersecurity, and any gaps in CVE support will put our critical infrastructure and national security at unacceptable risk," Luta Security founder and CEO Katie Moussouris, who pioneered Microsoft's vulnerability disclosure program, told The Register. "All industries worldwide depend on the CVE program to keep their heads above water when it comes to managing threats, so an abrupt halt like this would be like depriving the cybersecurity industry of oxygen and expecting it to spontaneously sprout gills," Moussouris said. It basically works like this: When an individual researcher or an organization discovers a new bug in some product, a CVE program partner — there are currently a few hundred across 40 countries — is asked to assess the vulnerability report and assign a unique CVE identifier for the flaw if and as necessary. The program is sponsored, and largely funded by the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, aka CISA, under the umbrella of the US Department of Homeland Security. "I can say that, having been in this industry for longer than CVEs themselves, it won't be good," Dustin Childs, head of threat awareness at Trend Micro's Zero Day Initiative, told The Register. I can say that, having been in this industry for longer than CVEs themselves, it won't be good "Before CVEs, each company referred to vulnerabilities using their own vernacular," he added. "Customers were confused about whether they were protected or impacted from a particular bug. And was a time when there were much fewer companies and infinitely fewer bugs." To put this in perspective: More than 40,000 new CVEs were published last year. "If MITRE were to lose funding for the CVE, we can expect considerable confusion again until someone else picks up the flag," Childs continued, noting that this would require some sort of industry consortium — but nothing along those lines currently exists. "Vulnerability management will become a mess as enterprises struggle to confirm they are in compliance with regulations and directives," he said. "Let's hope this is resolved quickly." VulnCheck, a private vulnerability intel company that is also a CVE Naming Authority, aka CNA, on Tuesday said it has proactively reserved 1,000 CVEs for 2025. Still, this only preserves the functionality of the program for a couple months at best. The security industry needs to step in to fill the void "MITRE, as a CNA, issues between 300-600 CVEs each month, so by reserving 1,000 hypothetically, we can assign a CVE to vulnerabilities for 1-2 months as long as the core service continues," Patrick Garrity, security researcher at VulnCheck, told The Register. "The CVE program is a critical resource globally used by nearly every organization in the world, so the implications of a pause will have downstream implications for security tooling, security teams, and every organization that cares about security," he added. "It would be terrible to see government funding for the CVE program go away, but we also believe that this is a time when the security industry needs to step in to fill the void." ®0 Commentarios 0 Acciones 16 Views

TECHCRUNCH.COMHow Musk manages his growing family: WSJIn Brief Posted: 9:55 PM PDT · April 15, 2025 Image Credits:ALLISON ROBBERT/POOL/AFP / Getty Images How Musk manages his growing family: WSJ Elon Musk says it’s his duty to “make new humans.” Now, a WSJ investigation suggests he may have fathered more than the 14 children already known, with sources claiming the real number could be significantly higher. The report also describes how Musk keeps those details under wraps. At the center of it all, per the report, is longtime fixer Jared Birchall, who runs Musk’s family office but also handles the logistics of Musk’s growing family, including by drafting NDAs and serving as a sounding board for the mothers of some of Musk’s children. For example, Musk reportedly asked conservative influencer Ashley St. Clair to sign a restrictive agreement after she gave birth to their son last fall. The deal: $15 million, plus an additional $100,000 a month until the baby turned 21 in exchange for her silence. She refused; now the deal gets worse with every perceived betrayal, she says. (She told the Journal that Musk’s team sent her just $20,000 after the outlet reached out to Musk for comment about its article.) As for Birchall, who is also the CEO of Musk’s brain-implant venture Neuralink and a partner at Musk’s AI venture xAI, managing Musk’s private life might just be a third full-time job. Per the Journal, in one two-hour call with St. Clair, Birchall told her that going the “legal route” with Musk “always, always leads to a worse outcome for that woman than what it would have been otherwise.” Topics Government & Policy0 Commentarios 0 Acciones 14 Views
