WWW.ILM.COMNew Details on ‘Star Wars: Beyond Victory – A Mixed Reality Playset’ Emerge at ‘Star Wars’ Celebration 2025ILM and Lucasfilm reveal new information about the virtual and mixed reality Meta Quest experience while Celebration Japan attendees get an exclusive first look. There’s a new kind of adventure in development for the galaxy far, far away. Industrial Light & Magic and Lucasfilm have revealed more details about Star Wars: Beyond Victory – A Mixed Reality Playset for Meta Quest headsets. Fans attending Star Wars Celebration in Japan this weekend will be able to experience a special hands-on first look at the title. “Star Wars Celebration has always been a place where fandom meets passion and we wanted to bring something to the show this year that our team is over the moon about,” said Alyssa Finley, executive producer of Beyond Victory. “We’re calling this a Playset because it isn’t just a game; it’s an entirely new way to experience the Star Wars galaxy and the worlds we create at ILM. This new mixed reality [MR] experience blends the physical and digital worlds in a way that’s unlike anything we’ve done before and we’re so excited to share a special first look with our incredible Star Wars community.” Beyond Victory will take fans into a story rooted in the fastest sport in the galaxy: podracing. “We started by asking ourselves some questions,” explains director Jose Perez III. “What kind of toys would be amazing in mixed reality? What toys don’t or can’t exist in real life? Podracing zipped straight to the top.” “One word: Sebulba,” Finley adds. “Sometimes you just wanna go fast and win races. Sometimes you want to learn from (or about) the greatest racer ever to throw a wrench into an engine. In Beyond Victory, we see firsthand the gritty underbelly of the podracing world. We dig into what happens around the racing circuit, and we get to try our hand at MR podracing along the way. If that’s not ideal what is?” Set around the timeline of Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018), Beyond Victory centers on up-and-coming racer Volo Bolus who joins forces with the unforgettable Sebulba, originally seen in Star Wars: The Phantom Menace (1999). Fans will be able to experience this new story in three distinct modes: Adventure: Using a combination of virtual and mixed reality, the story Arcade: Experience the thrill of podracing in mixed reality on a virtual holotable that brings players right into the heart of the action like never before. Playset: Transform the physical world around you and create your very own incredible Star Wars moments in mixed reality with a collection of unlockable virtual action figures and vehicles. “I genuinely love our story in Adventure mode,” explains Perez III. “It feels like a proper little MR journey. That’s a big one for me, personally. But honestly, the coolest thing for me is that all these different modes will co-exist. We’re working on this super cool playset with all these different kinds of experimental MR features. It’s interesting to see how we can push these kinds of technologies and stories in MR. We are taking some big swings on Beyond Victory. It’s really different from what we have made before.” The ILM and Meta Quest experience at Star Wars Celebration features over a dozen playable Quest stations equipped with the first ever hands-on look at Beyond Victory. This first look experience offers a glimpse into the tale of Volo and leads into a thrilling top-down Arcade podrace that plays out on a virtual holotable. Additionally, demos for award-winning titles Vader Immortal: A Star Wars VR Series and Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy’s Edge are available for those in attendance at Celebration. “Being in VR can feel like being in a whole different world,” says Finley. “What we’ve added for Beyond Victory is the ability to bring the story worlds and the real world together a little more in MR – so you can be playing, you can be interacting with the story world or playing a race – and you can also see what’s happening around you, integrated together with your play.” “We’ve definitely leveled up as a team since Vader Immortal and Galaxy’s Edge,” Perez III adds. “We’re bringing forward a lot of the tech we cooked up back then into Beyond Victory, so the nuts and bolts and how you move around in VR will feel pretty familiar if you’ve played our other titles. But the thing about ILM is we’re always innovating. So, even with that foundation, we’re building a ton of new systems and approaching the design in some pretty different ways for this one.” Star Wars Celebration Wishlist Star Wars: Beyond Victory – A Mixed Reality Playset now, and watch the ILM.com Newsroom for the latest updates. WWW.SCIENTIFICAMERICAN.COMWhat Is Dimethyl Sulfide, the Chemical Potentially Found on Exoplanet K2-18 b?April 17, 20254 min readIs Dimethyl Sulfide Really a Sign of Alien Life?Dimethyl sulfide is in the news after NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope may have detected relatively high levels of it in the atmosphere of an exoplanet called K2-18 bBy Meghan Bartels edited by Dean VisserAn artist’s depiction of exoplanet K2-18 b. NASA, ESA, CSA, Joseph Olmsted (STScI)Scientists and extraterrestrial enthusiasts are abuzz after a team of researchers studying the atmosphere of an exoplanet called K2-18 b with NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) just announced that they detected high levels of either the chemical dimethyl sulfide or a very similar compound—billing it as a hint of alien life. Although most people have never heard of dimethyl sulfide, it’s all around us here on Earth. But what is this compound, and is it really a sign of life beyond Earth? What Is Dimethyl Sulfide? In chemical terms, dimethyl sulfide comprises one atom of sulfur bonded to two methyl groups, each of which contains one carbon atom and three hydrogen atoms. The result is a small molecule with an outsize ability to offend the human nose. “Any of these sulfur things are going to be super stinky—that garlic, rotten egg smell,” says Eleanor Browne, a chemist at the University of Colorado Boulder. On supporting science journalismIf you're enjoying this article, consider supporting our award-winning journalism by subscribing. By purchasing a subscription you are helping to ensure the future of impactful stories about the discoveries and ideas shaping our world today.Earth’s dimethyl sulfide is constantly being produced by tiny plankton in the oceans. From there, it rises into the atmosphere, where it makes up about one out of every billion molecules. Once aloft, each individual molecule of dimethyl sulfide lasts only hours or, at most, about a day before it is destroyed in reactions that are triggered by exposure to sunlight and various atmospheric compounds. That process is scientifically important here on the surface, Browne says, because those reactions eventually create tiny particles called aerosols that seed clouds, making dimethyl sulfide an important compound to understand for climate models and other atmospheric science. From Earth to K2-18 bBecause microbes produce all of the detectable dimethyl sulfide in Earth’s atmosphere, and because it breaks down so quickly, scientists have long held that the compound could be a so-called biosignature—a fingerprint of life that is detectable from a distance—on other planets far from our own. “On Earth, it’s considered really a clean, unambiguous biosignature,” says Nora Hänni, a chemist at the University of Bern in Switzerland.Enter JWST, a piece of technology with an unprecedented ability to sniff out atmospheric chemicals on planets that pass between their stars and the telescope. Scientists arranged for JWST to study K2-18 b, which had been discovered orbiting a small, cool star about 124 light-years from Earth in 2015. The exoplanet’s size appears to be between that of Earth and Neptune and belongs to a range that scientists have never seen up close. In 2023 researchers led by Nikku Madhusudhan, an astrophysicist at the University of Cambridge, announced the first signs of dimethyl sulfide in K2-18 b’s atmosphere. At that time, other scientists were unable to corroborate the detection. But on Wednesday Madhusudhan and his team announced that a second JWST instrument had detected either the compound or a similar potential biosignature, dimethyl disulfide, with more confidence than the previous observations and at much higher levels than those in Earth’s atmosphere. The new results were published on April 17 in the Astrophysical Journal Letters.“You need thousands of times of Earth’s concentrations to be able to explain the data,” he said during a presentation broadcast on YouTube on April 17.Taking the “Bio” Out of Biosignature? From the new JWST observations—and the calculation that K2-18 b lies at a distance from its star that could permit liquid water to remain on its surface—Madhusudhan concluded that the most logical explanation is that the planet is covered in an ocean of warm water that is “teeming with life,” he said during the presentation on Thursday. But both Hänni and Browne conducted recent research that showed it would be a stretch to rely on dimethyl sulfide as a conclusive sign of life. Browne and her colleagues produced it and similar compounds in a laboratory simulation of Earth’s early atmosphere—without including living organisms. Hänni and her team detected the molecule on a frozen comet called 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko, which the European Space Agency explored up close with its Rosetta mission. Both researchers emphasize that scientists don’t know nearly enough about K2-18 b to determine whether any dimethyl sulfide found in its atmosphere was produced by living organisms—or by abiotic happenstance of the kind that led to their own observations. Researchers don’t even know whether the compound would disappear as rapidly as it does in Earth’s nitrogen-rich atmosphere, given that the alien world’s atmosphere is dominated by carbon dioxide instead.“Chemistry and the planets and all of those processes are so diverse,” Browne says. “There’s always going to be a way to make something abiotically.”And if life is producing the dimethyl sulfide, that same life should be producing other compounds as well, says Chris Lintott, an astronomer at the University of Oxford. “[Dimethyl sulfide] should exist in a chemical network. If it’s produced by biology, it should break down, and the raw materials—such as H2S [hydrogen sulfide]—used to make it should be visible in the spectrum, too. They aren’t.”Overall, he argues that local context will always determine what makes something a biosignature. “Looking for what’s biological on Earth isn’t a good guide to what might be biological elsewhere,” he says.0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 60 Visualizações

WWW.ARCHITECTURALDIGEST.COM11 Best Murphy Beds to Save Space in Stylish Fashion (2025)The best Murphy beds are among the most versatile, space-saving furniture items on the market, giving people the choice to have a discreet sleeping area in a guest bedroom, home office, or playroom. They’re kind of like the mullet of the interior design world: Business in the front, slumber party in the back. When it’s closed, a Murphy bed looks like a desk, cabinet, or chest, and frees up plenty of floor space. Sometimes referred to as wall beds, these have handles or some other feature you can pull down to reveal a bed frame and mattress.“Murphy beds are all the rage once again, but with a different take on design and function,” says Ania Agárdy, a Miami-based interior designer who runs the AD PRO Directory firm Luxury Living by Ania Agárdy. “Actually, they have become much more multifunctional than in the past, providing not only additional shelving and storage, but also integrated sofas and desks.”Daniella Hoffer, AD PRO Directory designer and owner of Daniella Hoffer Interiors, says custom is preferred, but you can elevate any Murphy bed sold online by color washing the entire wall, enlisting trim and millwork experts for retrofitting, or adding cohesive decor.“Creating millwork on the wall or making it look like cabinetry—similar to how we approach pantry doors in the kitchen today—is a beautiful way to incorporate a Murphy bed into the space, and frankly, hide it,” she says. “Or even putting a piece of artwork that you can remove easily before pulling down the bed.” Ahead, find all of our expert-approved picks for your home. Our Top Picks for the Best Murphy Beds:Best Overall Murphy Bed: Bestar Pur Murphy Bed, $1,500A Wooden Option: PVWIIK Murphy Bed with Desk and Removable Shelves, $599The Budget Pick: Merax Size Murphy Bed with Sofa, $555Most Stylish Murphy Bed: Wildon Home Solid Wood With Rattan Murphy Bed, $1,400For Spacious Storage: RealRooms Paramount Murphy Bed Bundle, $1,400Please note that prices reflect queen-size beds. Agárgy prefers the sophisticated designs from Italian brand Clei. “Their systems are very stylish, customizable, and high quality,” she says. “I also like the fact that many of their models are motorized, making them easy to convert back and forth.”How We Chose the Best Murphy BedsFor a comprehensive understanding of Murphy beds, we turned to designers Ania Agárdy, Daniella Hoffer, and Sarah Storms for their shopping tips and specific product recommendations. From there, we explored best-selling, top-reviewed products on the market today and analyzed a number of accounts from real customers. We prioritized the functionality and style of each piece, and took note of special features that could appeal to homeowners.FAQsWhat to look for in a Murphy bedHere are the key components to assess while you’re shopping for a Murphy bed, per our research and feedback from Agárdy, Hoffer, and Storms.Function: Think about the space and your expectations. Who will use this room, and is there an alternative purpose for it? “I have been using them frequently in empty-nester households where the children’s rooms have been redesigned to serve as multi-purpose spaces like a guest room/office or guest room/gym, or both,” Agárdy says. Hoffer also sees Murphy beds in secondary homes, such as a summer house.Style: Evaluate your home and the overall design elements you’ll need to coordinate with prior to purchasing your Murphy bed. Fortunately, there are plenty of styles to choose from, so you’ll find one for a midcentury modern guest room, bright and eccentric children’s room, and so on. “I always look for ones that can be customized to blend with the overall look of the room,” Agárdy adds.Size: While Murphy beds are space-saving by nature, sizes can range depending on the functionalities. For instance, a Murphy bed with a cabinet or desk attached will take up significantly more room (closed or open) than a classic Murphy bed without those bonus bells and whistles. You’ll also need to factor in the size of the mattress you’d like, since there are Murphy beds that can accommodate twins to kings. Make sure to measure your space prior to checkout.Installation: The customer reviews don’t lie—even the best Murphy beds are a pain to install, and some even require a specific type of wall for proper mounting. It’s technically one piece of furniture, but it comes with lots of parts and most manufacturers (and our design experts) recommend a professional installer. If you feel up to the DIY challenge and the manufacturer gives you the okay, follow the instructions and exercise as much patience as possible. Otherwise, enlist a pro to help you out. Because of the installation requirements, this is not considered a renter-friendly solution. What’s the best type of mattress for a Murphy bed?“There isn’t any reason to sacrifice quality sleep and wall beds can be just as comfortable as a traditional frame, as long as the platform and mattress are solid and supportive,” Storms says.0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 63 Visualizações

TECHCRUNCH.COMDefense tech Theseus landed Y Combinator, the US Special Forces, and $4.3M from a tweetOn February 18, 2024, Ian Laffey posted on X that he and two others he’d just met built a cheap drone at a hackathon that calculated its coordinates simply by using its camera and Google Maps. He and his colleagues, Sacha Lévy and Carl Schoeller, were all engineers under the age of 25. The tech had clear potential to combat rampant GPS jamming of drones in Ukraine. Instead of GPS, drone operators there have to use high-tech goggles to guide their drones by sight. But that leads to lots of problems, especially under poor conditions like thick fog or at night. At the end of the hackathon, Schoeller wished his two teammates well and parted, hoping their paths might cross again. But the tweet went viral and changed their lives. A day later, the three decided to apply to Y Combinator, successfully getting into its Spring 2024 cohort. Now, their San Francisco-based company, Theseus, has just raised $4.3 million in seed funding in a round led by First Round Capital, with additional backing from Y Combinator and Lux Capital, it exclusively told TechCrunch. Theseus joins a flock of other drone-related startups. There’s Skydio, which focuses on replacing Chinese drones for U.S. law enforcement and was last valued at $2.2 billion in 2023. Shield AI, which builds reconnaissance drones, recently raised at a $5.3 billion valuation. The biggest defense tech player, Anduril, launched its own small drone last year, and is reportedly in talks to raise at a $28 billion valuation. A drone at a us special forces base using theseusImage Credits:Theseus Theseus says it doesn’t build drones, but focuses on the hardware components and software that will enable pretty much any military drone to fly unmanned without GPS. Schoeller, Theseus’ CEO, told TechCrunch the company doesn’t build targeting systems. Its software is not deciding whether a certain spot is a legitimate military target or not — the sole focus is getting a drone from point A to B. Theseus hasn’t won any U.S. military deals yet, and hasn’t been deployed in an actual battlefield. So it’s using its fresh capital to focus on further building out its tech, hiring for three engineering roles. However, the viral hackathon tweet did get Theseus noticed by U.S. Special Forces, which has entered into an agreement for early testing and development. Theseus says it recently went to a secret Special Forces base to test out its latest system, sending TechCrunch a photo of it in action. Overall, starting a company with people you’ve known for under a week “generally isn’t advised,” but in Theseus’ case, it warranted the leap of faith, Schoeller wrote on LinkedIn.0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 82 Visualizações
