Marathon Developer Says Price is “Definitely Going to be a Conversation”
News Marathon Developer Says Price is “Definitely Going to be a Conversation” The studio has previously mentioned that Marathon will not be a full-priced game. Rumours indicate pricing similar to Helldivers 2. Posted By Joelle Daniels | On 22nd, Apr. 2025 While Bungie has revealed quite a few details about its upcoming PvPvE extraction shooter Marathon, the company has continued to remain silence about the game’s price. In an interview with streamer Dr.Lupo, assistant director Del Chaf has continued the company’s elusiveness on questions about price. When originally asked about the price, Chafe pointed to the studio’s previous statements about how Marathon will not be priced like a full-priced game. DrLupo responded to this by saying, “Yeah, I saw that on Twitter.” Check out the whole interview below. “I can’t go into details, but what I’ll say is – we’re not ready to talk about it right now,” continued Chafe, “but […] we’ll have conversations about this. When we’re ready, we’ll share some of the stuff we’re talking about. Like, you and a bunch of other people are going to have really good feedback about it.” Chafe continues on, saying that when Bungie does finally unveil the price for Marathon, it is “definitely going to be a conversation.” According to Chafe, there are “big goals here – especially kicking this off with alpha – is to build this game and build a community around it. And so, we want to do that collaboratively. We want that perspective that helps us do what the players most care about.” Previously, Marathon director Joe Ziegler also spoke about the game’s price without revealing any details. In an interview, Ziegler said that Bungie is committed to making Marathon “really awesome,” and that players might have their own ideas about what good value means when it comes to the price of a game. “What we’re hoping everyone understands is that we’re focused on committing to making this a game that’s really awesome, and we think that starting point is really strong at this current time,” said Ziegler. “Everyone’s got their own definition of what is the right price.” Rumours, meanwhile, have indicated that Bungie is looking at charging $40 for Marathon when it comes out on September 23. While not confirmed by Bungie or Sony, the price would be logical, putting it in line with other online shooters like Helldivers 2. The same rumours also indicate that Bungie is planning to have an open beta for Marathon where more players will get to try the game in August before its September launch. This month, however, will see closed alpha tests of Marathon. Bungie recently revealed the system requirements needed for the closed alpha test, with the minimum specs indicating that Marathon will likely be highly scalable. At the lower end, the game needs players to have at least an Intel Core i5-6600 or AMD Ryzen 5 2600 CPU, 8 GB of RAM, and an Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050 Ti (4 GB), an Intel Arc A580 (8 GB), or an AMD Radeon RX 5500 XT (4 GB) graphics card. Earlier this week, Bungie has also released a new trailer for Marathon. Dubbed the Alpha Intro Cinematic, the trailer gives us a look at the background story of the game, and reveals a few key details about the various Runners of the game. The trailer also revealed the existence of support AI ONI, which ties the upcoming extraction shooter in a small way back to the original Marathon trilogy. Marathon is under development for PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. Wuthering Waves x Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Collaboration Announced for 2026
News Wuthering Waves x Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Collaboration Announced for 2026 This marks the action RPG's first collaboration and Edgerunners' second after Guilty Gear Strive adds Lucy to the roster this Summer. Posted By Ravi Sinha | On 22nd, Apr. 2025 Kuro Games’ open-world action RPG Wuthering Waves has been on the upswing post-Version 2.0, and it’s prepping for Version 2.3’s launch on April 29th. However, the developer also announced a collaboration with CD Projekt RED and Cyberpunk: Edgerunners for 2026, its first since launching in 2024. It would mark the second collab for Studio Trigger’s popular anime, as Lucy will join the roster of Guilty Gear Strive this Summer as part of Season Pass 4. The content is unknown, but if it’s anything like Honkai: Star Rail’s upcoming Fate/stay night Unlimited Blade Works collab, we could see Edgerunners characters as new Resonators. Whether they play a part in the story remains to be seen, so stay tuned. Wuthering Waves is available for PS5, PC, iOS, and Android. Check out our review of the console version here. Version 2.3, “Fiery Arpeggio of Summer Reunion,” will add two new playable five-star Resonators – Zani and Ciaccona – alongside their weapons, a new story quest centred on the Black Alley, and new events. Video Game Outlet GamesBeat Spins Out From VentureBeat, Forms Separate Independent Publication (EXCLUSIVE)
Video game publication GamesBeat has spun out from technology site VentureBeat into a separate, independent entity, Variety has learned. Gina Joseph, who was chief strategy officer at VentureBeat and GamesBeat, now serves as CEO for the latter’s new incarnation, which is keeping the same name. Dean Takahashi, lead writer at GamesBeat since 2008, is the revamped publication’s editorial director. “We are excited about this powerful new chapter for GamesBeat and the industry we are serving,” said Joseph in a press release. “As a niche independent publication, we’ll unlock unparalleled insights, opportunities and direct access to decision-makers, playing an integral role for this $177 billion industry and the broader interactive tech landscape.” Related Stories “This is a new era for GamesBeat,” said Takahashi in the press release. “As the gaming industry continues to evolve, thoughtful reporting is more important than ever. Our goal is to deliver the kind of insightful journalism that offers our audience contextual insights needed to understand how gaming interacts with other high-growth sectors.” Popular on Variety Joseph leads GamesBeat after spending more than two decades in media and tech, serving a stint as head of strategic partnerships and ad sales at Hearst before joining VentureBeat in 2018. She also sits on the boards of Midwest Games and the IGDA Foundation. Takahashi began covering video games as a staff writer at the Wall Street Journal in 1996, going on to write for other publications before landing at VentureBeat, where he launched GamesBeat. VentureBeat said in a press release it will “sharpen” its focus around “the enterprise shift to AI, data infrastructure and intelligent security,” in the wake of GamesBeat’s spinout. In addition to gaming coverage, GamesBeat hosts live events like the GamesBeat Summit and its Next, Global Tour and Games & Hollywood events. “What we want to do is really focus in on how we can create opportunity for the industry — not just… cover news but really just break through the noise and provide insights that matter, but also drive conversations and really focus in on the community and the needs of the industry,” said Joseph, speaking to Variety. Globally, the gaming industry saw more than 14,000 layoffs in 2024, with one in 10 developers reporting in a GDC survey that they lost their jobs. In 2025, EA’s BioWare reduced its workforce to less than 100 employees. Games journalism is just as unstable. Ziff Davis enacted soft layoffs across IGN, GamesIndustry.biz and Humble Bundle last October, after the IGN Creators Guild filed an unfair labor practice charge with the NLRB earlier in 2024, in response to prior layoffs. In addition, GameStop shut down Game Informer last August, only for Gunzilla Games to purchase and resurrect the publication in March as an entity running independently from the studio. Meanwhile, Kotaku is one of just two publications left at G/O Media, which sold off Quartz earlier in April. Many gaming journalists have set up shop at platforms like Substack to continue their work. “We truly care about the industry and we recognize that it’s been underserved in so many ways,” Joseph told Variety. “We really want to break down barriers and get everyone paying attention.” “I often hear from the smallest game companies, the game startups, that if we didn’t do a story on them, nobody else would,” said Takahashi, also to Variety. “One of the most important things to us is to cover the ecosystem and how it sprouts new ideas.” GamesBeat’s new iteration counts strategic advisors like Peter Levin, who is co-founder and managing director at venture capital firm Griffin Gaming Partners. Levin previously co-founded Nerdist Industries, overseeing its sale to Legendary Entertainment in 2012, in addition to his involvement with the sale of Deadline in 2009 to Penske Media Corporation, which owns Variety. Greg Akselrud and Kelly Siobhan Laffey at Stubbs Alderton & Markiles, LLP served as legal counsel for GamesBeat’s spinout from VentureBeat.

Retro game industry in panic as Trump tariffs threaten hobby
One gaming handheld maker is pausing shipments to the United States due to U.S. President Trump’s 145% tariffs on products imported from China. Anbernic, which makes the popular Anbernic RG35XX Plus, announced it’s suspending all orders of its handhelds sent from China to the U.S. The company joins Retroid Pocket in the tariff chaos; that company, which also ships handhelds from China, is rushing to ship out its new device before the U.S. government closes the de minimis exemption, which allowed smaller shipments, under $800, from facing tariffs. To put it simply: If a company is shipping a bunch of handhelds to the U.S., and any one shipment is valued over $800, that shipment would face normal tariffs. If that company is shipping a single handheld console to a customer in the U.S., the levies were originally 30% of the item’s value, or a flat rate of $25 — a number that will increase to $50 on June 1. Small packages will have those tariffs applied instead of the 145% increase. A $25 or $50 increase might not seem like a ton, but the draw of these consoles is that they allow players to access lots of games, on a system that runs well, for pretty cheap. The $25 or $50 rates also turned out to be short-lived; Trump later increased the rate twice, ending up at 120% or $100, beginning May 2. On June 1, that goes up to $200 per item. A console that previously cost $100 could now be $200 or more under these rates.Polygon has reached out to Retroid and Anbernic for comment, but has not heard back before publication. A spokesperson for Ayaneo, another retro handheld maker, said it’s “actively” working on its plan with regard to the tariffs.Retro gaming enthusiasts are panic-ordering devices like the Retroid Pocket Flip 2, trying to get their order in before tariffs hit. Eric, a retro gaming enthusiast from Pennsylvania, told Polygon that he “immediately” ordered the device when it went on sale, due to the tariffs and fear he wouldn’t be able to get it later. With Retroid rushing to get out its orders to U.S. customers, Eric’s Flip 2 is navigating the Chinese mail system.“Ultimately, we need people to create new ‘retro’ products to keep a vibrant community”“The whole premise of the sub-$150 market, and much more so the sub-$80 market, is that you’re getting an outdated phone [system on a chip] in a form factor that is going to have some random flaws, but because it’s cheap and you’re only looking to play old SNES or Playstation games, it’s not a big deal,” Zu and Stubbs, who write for retro handheld enthusiast site RetroHandhelds, told Polygon via email. “It’s even part of the fun to see new form factors, find out what new chips can do, and discover what sort of custom firmware people will come up with.”While some consumer electronics are exempt from tariffs (supposedly temporarily, per a statement from Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick), like smartphones and computers, video game consoles aren’t. They’re classified by the U.S. International Trade Commission as toys, not technology. The chaos of it all is causing widespread panic in the retro gaming community — not just retro handheld makers, but retro hardware repair businesses and others, too.“Anyone who creates or manufactures any hardware has been impacted,” Steve Nutter, who repairs and restores vintage CRT monitors and televisions, told Polygon. “This leads to concern within the community that items will not just cost more, but will disappear all together. Either risk a lot by trying to maintain production and pass on the costs, or producers will leave the market and abandon manufacturing, temporarily or possibly permanently.”Nutter runs his business, Retro Tech, through Patreon. Subscribers get access to a community and vintage gaming expertise; they can also hire him for repair and maintenance on CRTs. He doesn’t sell anything, but he relies on “tools, materials, and replacement parts that are manufactured all over the world to repair and restore these machines,” he said. The companies that make those parts are forced to raise prices to offset tariffs. Nutter said he’s looking to U.S. manufacturing and bulk orders to offset costs. The problem is that some materials or parts simply aren’t made in the U.S. There’s no other option.Another handheld device that’s at risk due to Trump’s tariffs is Arduboy, the credit card-sized, open source system. Beloved by its community, Arduboy is a device that some people might be willing to shell out double the price for, but creator Kevin Bates isn’t interested in that. “Nobody wants to pay $200 for an Arduboy,” Bates told Polygon. “And even if they do, I don’t really want to sell it. The magic of Arduboy is that it is accessible and price is a huge factor of that. People can still make it themselves, and play the games online using the emulator. Because of the open source nature of Arduboy, the platform itself can never really be killed.”Bates said he was looking to divest from the business anyway, either by selling it or having investors take over, but the tariffs are making his “final chapter as an entrepreneur more difficult.” He’s revisiting U.S. manufacturing for an upgraded Arduboy he’d like to make, but there are challenges to that, too. U.S. manufacturers will likely rely on Chinese parts to make, which increases prices to manufacture in the U.S. even more.“Zooming out a bit — there’s a familiar dystopian pattern,” Bates said. “Technology starts cheap and accessible. We adopt it, rely on it, and once it becomes essential, access gets restricted or priced up. It’s not just market disruption, it’s a shift in power and that’s what I believe these tariffs are designed to feel like.”Some businesses remain in a “wait-and-see” holding pattern — things have changed so rapidly and frequently that no one knows how long these major tariffs will stick. But the turmoil created by the situation has already had a bleak impact on the industry.“My concerns are about morale and sentiment,” Nutter said. “These abrupt changes cause uncertainty. I am concerned that many of my colleagues in the retro community will have to put their passions and creations on hold due to trade markets basically closing. These kinds of roadblocks really can be detrimental to small and medium size businesses as well as the creation of niche products. Ultimately, we need people to create new ‘retro’ products to keep a vibrant community.”See More:

iPhone 17e Slated For Late May 2026 Launch As Apple Targets Major Rivals, With Trial Production Expected To Begin Soon For Budget-Friendly Successor
With the success of the iPhone 16e launch, Apple is now planning to make it an annual series, as the device is nearing the trial production stage. The so-called budget iPhone is slated to launch in May of next year, as per reports from a Chinese leaker from Apple's supply chain. The iPhone 16e is gradually becoming a hit for the masses, especially after rumors of a price hike. Apple is preparing to launch the iPhone 17e in late May 2026, with trial production expected to begin soon as part of its annual budget lineup The Weibo-based leaker known as Fixed Focus Digital claims that the iPhone 17e is currently expected to launch by the end of May 2026. While the exact launch time frame is not mentioned, Apple will potentially see fit to take its time and judge market response and production. According to the leaker, the iPhone 17e will face direct competition from rivals who launch their own set of mid-range devices more or less in the same time frame. In the North American market, we believe that the competition is Google's Pixel 9a and Samsung's A series of devices, but these two have not launched in the second quarter. This means that the real competition for the iPhone 17e comes from Chinese smartphone manufacturers, including Xiaomi, Redmi, and Vivo. Apple is quite concerned with its falling sales in China, as it was recently reported that the company's market share fell by 9 percent. It was the seventh consecutive quarter for the company to have declined while all major smartphone manufacturers, such as Xiaomi, Huawei, Oppo, and Vivo, took the top spot, respectively. The setup of the 17e production line is being planned. This answers the question: There will be a 17e next year, and now it is almost in the trial production stage. Compared to the iPhone 16e, which was launched in late February, Apple appears to be not too strict with its launch timeframe, as it is with the flagship models. However, it is too early to assume, as the company could pick up pace in the coming months and keep up with its Spring schedule. The 16e came with a bigger 6.1-inch OLED display, Face ID, A18 chip, and a USB-C port, all housed inside a body that resembles the iPhone 14. This allowed the company to position the device as a budget option to the standard models. A source shared a little information: “e model” is likely to be available in the next generation. At present, a new project code has been seen, which is suspected to be 17e. Fixed Focus Digital was the first source to have coined the name of the device, while the rest of the industry was pointing to the same 'SE' naming scheme. The new "iPhone 16e" nomenclature suggested that the budget iPhone will be an annual thing rather than launching every three years. The device will add more users to Apple's lineup who are not willing to spend upwards of $1,000 for a smartphone. Google does the same with its "a" series of Pixel phones, and the latest Pixel 9a has been received pretty well by the tech community. Apple's iPhone 16e is surely a direct and better competitor of the budget lineup from Google, and an annual cycle would only push the budget industry forward. Lying About Your Birth Year Might Not Cut It Anymore, As Meta Is Using AI-Powered Age Detection To Catch Underage Users And Move Them Into Teen Accounts
As social media companies are focused on introducing products and features that keep their users hooked, regulatory authorities are actively looking into protecting teenagers from the adverse impact of excessive consumption of these platforms by having companies focus on protecting younger users. A growing number of teens, not only parents, seem worried about the harmful impacts of social media, as pointed out in a recent report. Meta, amidst the growing concerns, launched its Teen Accounts for Instagram last year but has been pursuing the protection more aggressively by now using its AI technology to have more teens enroll in the right account. Meta is now using AI to help figure out suspected teens lying about their birth year and place them into Teen Accounts With the growing trend of social media platforms, there seems to be a wider concern among the community about how detrimental excessive consumption can be, especially for younger users' mental health. Even the teens are said to now be aware of how the exposure to these platforms is impacting their time and generally believed to not have a positive impact. A recent report by Pew Research surveyed about 1,391 teens and parents across the United States and highlighted how young users now feel the need to hold these platforms accountable for the harm they have done to them. Given the shifting view of teens along with the parents and community, Meta launched Instagram Teen Accounts last year and recently expanded to Facebook and Messenger aimed at supporting parents who want to have control over their kids' interaction and are able to see the content they see and the time they spend online through the built-in protection setting. Teenagers are automatically part of the protection settings, and if they need to make any changes, they need either parental or guardian approval. Now, Meta is going one step ahead as it announced its plan to ensure the new protection is expanded to as many teens as possible. Meta shared yesterday about now using its AI-based age technology in the U.S. to protect young users by identifying teens who have been misrepresenting their age in order to have access to adult features on Instagram, Facebook and Messenger. While the company admits this is not the first time it is deploying AI to estimate user age groups, it also takes the chance to highlight that it is the first time it is actively using the tool for applying safeguards and, hence, is a significant step. If the AI technology detects any underage teenager that claims otherwise, they would be automatically transitioned to the teen account with more stringent safety features placed up. Meta emphasizes that it is ensuring the technology is accurate through its built-in safeguards and AI scans for behavioral cues. It is also aware of false positives and how, in order to deal with them, the company will allow users to update their settings themselves. Meta seems to be actively responding to pressure from the public and regulatory authorities and making a smart move by not only complying but also looking for more ways to protect young children from the harmful impact of social media consumption.
