    Bug-size robots that fly and flip could pollinate futuristic farms’ crops
    Tiny flying robots could perform such useful tasks as pollinating crops inside multilevel warehouses, boosting yields while mitigating some of agriculture’s harmful impacts on the environment. The latest robo-bug from an MIT lab, inspired by the anatomy of the bee, comes closer to matching nature’s performance than ever before.  Led by Kevin Chen, an associate professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science and the senior author of a paper on the work, the team adapted an earlier flying robot composed of four identical two-winged units, combined into a rectangular device about the size of a microcassette. The wings managed to flap like an insect’s, but the bot couldn’t fly for long. One problem is that the wings would blow air into each other when flapping, reducing the lift forces they could generate. In the new design, each of the four units has a single flapping wing pointing away from the robot’s center, stabilizing the wings and boosting their lift forces. The researchers also improved the way the wings are connected to the actuators, or artificial muscles, that flap them. In previous designs, when the actuators’ movements reached the extremely high frequencies needed for flight, the devices often started buckling. That reduced the power and efficiency of the robot. Thanks in part to a new, longer wing hinge, the actuators now experience less mechanical strain and can apply more force, so the bots can fly faster, longer, and in more precise paths. The robots can precisely track a trajectory enough to spell M-I-T.COURTESY OF THE RESEARCHERS Weighing less than a paper clip, the new robotic insect can hover for more than 1,000 seconds—almost 17 minutes—without any degradation of flight precision. “When my student Yi-Hsuan Hsiao was performing that flight, he said it was the slowest 1,000 seconds he had spent in his entire life. The experiment was extremely nerve-racking,” Chen says. The new robot also reached an average speed of 35 centimeters per second, the fastest flight researchers have reported, and was able to perform body rolls and double flips. It can even precisely track a trajectory that spells M-I-T. “At the end of the day, we’ve shown flight that is 100 times longer than anyone else in the field has been able to do, so this is an extremely exciting result,” Chen says. COURTESY OF THE RESEARCHERS From here, he and his students want to see how far they can push this new design, with the goal of achieving flight for longer than 10,000 seconds. They also want to improve the precision of the robots so they could land in and take off from the center of a flower. In the long run, the researchers hope to install tiny batteries and sensors so the robots could fly and navigate outside the lab. The design has more room for those electronics now that they’ve halved the number of wings. The bots still can’t achieve the fine-tuned behavior of a real bee, Chen acknowledges. Still, he says, “with the improved lifespan and precision of this robot, we are getting closer to some very exciting applications, like assisted pollination.”

    After decades of working as a biologist at a Southern school with a Division 1 football team, coming to MIT was a bit of a culture shock—in the best possible way. I’ve heard from MIT alumni all about late-night psetting, when to catch MITHenge, and the best way to celebrate Pi Day (with pie, of course). And I’ve also learned that for many of you, the Institute is more than simply your alma mater. As the MIT Alumni Association celebrates its 150th anniversary, I’m reflecting on the extraordinary talent and drive of the people here, and what it is that makes MIT alumni—like MIT itself—just a little bit different. As students, you learned to investigate, question, argue, critique, and refine your ideas with faculty and with each other, managing to be both collaborative and competitive. You hacked the toughest and most interesting problems and came up with the most unconventional solutions. And you developed and nurtured a uniquely entrepreneurial, hands-on MIT spirit that only those who have earned a degree here can fully understand, but that the rest of us can easily identify and admire. An article in this magazine about the history of the MIT Alumni Association notes that when the association was formed, there were 84 alumni in total. By 1888, the number had increased to an impressive 579. And it grew by orders of magnitude; today nearly 149,000 alumni are members. But even as the alumni community has grown and evolved, its culture and character have remained remarkably consistent, represented by men and women known for their rigorous thinking, incisive analysis, mens et manus ethos, and drive to make a real and transformative impact on people and communities everywhere. As MIT alumni, you recognize each other by your Brass Rats. These sturdy, cleverly designed rings not only signify your completion (some might say survival) of an immensely difficult course of study. They also signal to the world that you stand ready to share your expertise, knowledge, and experience in the service of humanity.  Alumni have always been the Institute’s greatest ambassadors, and today that role has taken on even greater meaning and importance. As a collectible card game, Magic requires competitive players to select the optimal deck of cards based on how they think it will function against hypothetical opponents with many different strategies—then the game itself offers proof or disproof of the player’s predictive powers. Because about 30,000 different cards are available today—though they’re likely not all owned by a single individual—there are many degrees of variation.This abundance of possibilities has sparked plenty of questions and ideas. Some players have wondered how complicated the game really is. For example, does it involve enough complexity to perform calculations, as you would with a computer? To this end, software engineer Alex Churchill and two other Magic players created a game situation in which the cards act as a universal computer—as a Turing machine. They posted their work to the preprint server arXiv.org in 2019.Their computer model sealed the deal: Magic is the most complex type of game, they concluded. Theoretically, any kind of calculation that a computer can perform, a particular Magic game can do the same. Coding such a Turing machine alone is extremely time-consuming. And who has the time to go one step further and go through the billions of different card combinations necessary to solve a math problem with Magic cards? The quicker option would be to type the problem into a computer through some elegant Python code (or another programming language).As it turns out, people are quite willing to give their time to such “Magical” endeavors. For example, in 2024 Churchill and mathematician Howe Choong Yin developed a Magic programming language that used Magic moves to code elementary calculations such as addition, multiplication or division. Say you wanted to calculate 3 + 5. All you would need are a few cards (such as Vaevictis Asmadi, the Dire), Churchill and Howe’s instructions, and a little patience. Forget supercomputers, quantum computing and all that fancy stuff: the future of computing lies in Magic cards, right?Probably not—even solving a division problem with Magic cards is cumbersome, and tackling more complex problems in this way proves to be nearly impossible, especially when it comes to dealing with open questions in mathematics. That hasn’t stopped others from trying, however.Gameplay with Twin PrimesIn the fall of 2024 Reddit user its-summer-somewhere posted a combination of 14 moves that use about two dozen Magic cards and could potentially deal infinite damage. The outcome of the game depends on the answer to a mathematical puzzle that is almost 180 years old: Are there an infinite number of prime number twins? Prime numbers, such as 2, 3, 5, 7, 11, and so on, are divisible only by 1 and themselves. Twin primes are pairs of prime numbers that differ by only two, such as 3 and 5, 5 and 7, 11 and 13, and 17 and 19.Mathematicians have previously proven that there are an infinite number of primes. But their number decreases with increasing size: the further you progress in the number line, the less often prime numbers appear. This is even more true for prime number twins. The question that mathematicians have been asking themselves for centuries is: Are there also an infinite number of twin primes? Or will this parade end at some point?In 1849 French mathematician Alphonse de Polignac put forward the now famous twin prime conjecture: there are an infinite number of prime number twins. But despite numerous attempts, the assumption has so far neither been proven nor disproven. The largest known twin prime pair is 2,996,863,034,895 x 21,290,000 + 1 and 2,996,863,034,895 x 21,290,000 – 1. Is it perhaps the last?A Mathematical Magic CardInterest in prime numbers among Magic players increased with the introduction of the new card set Duskmourn: House of Horror on September 27, 2024. The deck contains, among other things, the card Zimone, All-Questioning. Its description reads: “At the beginning of your end step, if a land entered the battlefield under your control this turn and you control a prime number of lands, create Primo, the Indivisible, a legendary 0/0 green and blue Fractal creature token, then put that many +1/+1 counters on it. (2, 3, 5, 7, 11, 13, 17, 19, 23, 29, and 31 are prime numbers.)”That sounds cryptic, at least for Magic-inexperienced people like me. But the action of the card depends on the number of currency-generating cards called “lands” that a player controls—specifically on whether that number is prime.After its-summer-somewhere posted their complicated, and not particularly realistic, game situation, the outcome of which depends on whether there are an infinite number of prime twins, another Redditor promptly commented, “Somehow I knew that introducing the concept of prime numbers into the game would be a bad idea. Good to know I’m not wrong.” (“To be fair,” responded a third user, “prime numbers have always been in the game, as have non-prime numbers. [This set] just introduced the concept of that mattering.”)The idea, its-summer-somewhere wrote, is to create situations in which certain cards called “creatures” can be copied as often as desired using a particular card combination. Another card ensures that the copied creatures function as lands. If the number of lands controlled is not prime, a certain combination of cards creates two more lands. As soon as the number of lands corresponds to a prime number p, however, Zimone comes into play: It then creates two new Primo creatures, which in turn automatically also become lands. This means that you now have p + 2 lands. If p + 2 is also a prime, Zimone’s ability gets triggered again, leaving four Primo creatures on the battlefield. At that point you can use three of them to cause damage to the enemy. Thus, the opponent can only be harmed if Zimone is triggered twice in a row—in other words, only if the number of lands corresponds to a prime number twin. You can then repeat certain steps to increase your number of lands to the number of the next largest twin prime. The maximum damage that can be inflicted depends on the number of all existing twin primes: “Our maximum damage is infinite, if and only if the twin primes conjecture is true,” its-summer-somewhere wrote.Does this now bring humanity closer to a solution to the prime twin conjecture? Probably not. Sure, you could sit two people down and have them play Magic for ages. But ultimately the gameplay is based on knowing whether numbers are prime twins instead of explicitly proving the conjecture.Regardless, the imagined game is always entertaining and bizarre—and apparently it tempts nonmathematicians to deal with problems related to number theory. It may also have the opposite effect: As a math fan, I’ve been looking for a new hobby for a long time. Following months of leaks, an official livestream confirmed the existence of the long-awaited remaster. Bringing players back to the land of Cyrodil, Oblivion Remastered brings the game to Unreal Engine 5 with stunning new visuals. Oblivion Remastered includes all previously released DLC of the original Xbox 360 and PC game. This means that Knights of the Nine, The Shivering Isles and other DLC add-ons will be included alongside the main game. The new version of the iconic RPG uses Unreal Engine 5 for the game’s visual facelift while keeping the original game engine’s quirks running underneath. This means that systems like Radiant AI return in full, allowing the game to keep its unique charm. Oblivion Remastered Release Date The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remaster launches on April 22, 2025. That’s right, it’s available later today, and I still have to work. “Here we are 20 years later,” Todd Howard said in the livestream. “When you think about The Elder Scrolls, to us it goes beyond a game franchise. Obviously, we’re working on the sixth chapter here, but what’s great about The Elder Scrolls is being able to look at each chapter. Oblivion was a real defininig moment for the series, and also how we make games as a studio.” The new “visual update” is designed to keep the charm of the original Xbox 360 RPG, albeit with a new coat of paint. New Oblivion Remastered Features The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion features a new levelling system that is a middle point between the original Oblivion and Skyrim. Combat has also been overhauled to include hit reactions, proper effects, controller feedback and more. The game’s third-person perspective has been massively improved to be more in line with Skyrim and Starfield. This means that builds like stealth archers can still be enjoyed in a third-person view. Interestingly, each race of the game has unique voice lines that weren’t able to be included in the original release. While a lot of the quirkier original lines are still in place, Virtuos has recorded a tonne of new voice lines for players to enjoy. Oblivion Remastered Price The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered is on sale for $49.99 for its base edition. The game is also available in its base form on Xbox Game Pass and Xbox Cloud Gaming on Xbox One, Xbox Series, PC and Mobile. The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered Digital Deluxe Edition also includes a few additional goodies. These include access to the Artbook and Sountrack App as well as the Akatosh and Mehrunes Dagon armour, weapons and horse armour sets. The game is available on Xbox Series, PlayStation 5 and PC. (We used to call them goons, but not anymore.)  The fan game is admittedly very simple, but it’s the first true 3D Daredevil game to actually be released. It’s a little Arkham Asylum, and it’s a little janky, but it is fun to actually play as the Marvel superhero for once.  Now, there was a proper console game in development for the hero back in the early 2000s. Created by Alien Resurrection and Croc developer Argonaut Games, the title was an interesting take on the character, and builds can be found online for a very early PlayStation 2 version of the game.  Now, Daredevil is expected to make a modern game appearance within Marvel Rivals as a brand-new hero. Hopefully, one day, we’ll also get a proper AAA adventure with the vigilante. Daytime investigations, nighttime beat downs? Screw it, give us a Persona calendar and a small open world. You know what?
