    Dueler's Providence update
4/14/2025 Changelog: Brute, Quickstep, Underground Level. Posted by providence_dev on Apr 13th, 2025 -A third underground level for the new brute enemy -A brute enemy that swings a massive greatsword with ease. With a slow but unstoppable combo, players must sneak in attacks in between his swings. Beware of the backswing! -Quickstep!! Press Q or E to trigger quickstep, which is a high stamina move that unconditionally evades an attack if timed properly. Players can use it as a desperate last act in the end of a fight, or use it sparingly to scout out unfamiliar enemy movesets. -Tutorials with better UI and the updated character models, set in a "dreamspace". A special tutorial for fighting dual wielding enemies -Checkpointing now live. Given the long level 2, we added generous checkpoints in the level. We reblanced player and enemy stats to be more challenging to compensate. Checkpoints are meant to be forgiving, but players must master game mechanics to progress. -CutScene Guidance! We added opening cutscenes to each level to guide the player through the levels.

9 Things You Might Not Know About The Switch 2
Start SlideshowStart SlideshowImage: Nintendo / KotakuOn April 2, Nintendo revealed a lot about the Switch 2 via a big Direct. And in the days since that event we’ve learned more about the Switch 2 via statements from Nintendo, interviews, and more. For example, did you know that Nintendo confirmed Friend Codes are back, or that the Switch 2 carts will taste disgusting? Keeping track of all this new information is tricky. A lot of it has been revealed in various places and across many days and it’s all a bit of a mess. To help, we’ve gone looking for smaller details about the Switch 2 that you might care about, but not be aware of yet. Then we took all those details and collected them into one easy-to-find place. We’re just really nice like that. So here are nine things about the Switch 2 that you might not know about. Previous SlideNext SlideList slidesFriend codes are still a thing on Switch 2, but have QR codes nowList slidesFriend codes are still a thing on Switch 2, but have QR codes nowScreenshot: Nintendo / KotakuOne of Nintendo’s big shifts for the new hardware is the addition of GameChat, a tool for voice chat and sharing video with people on your friends list. But how do they get added to that list to begin with? Still friend codes, it turns out; Nintendo’s annoying method of finding other players that requires entering bespoke strings of numbers into a text field instead of browsing by username. Fortunately, there’s now a new, easier way to link up with people that bypasses the tedium of entering friend codes: QR codes. Players can now share them via the smartphone app to easily sync up with one another. Not great, but still much better than the current system. —Ethan GachPrevious SlideNext SlideList slidesThe eShop lacks a cool musical themeList slidesThe eShop lacks a cool musical themeNintendo / Rhythm RootSadly, the Nintendo eShop on Switch 2 won’t have a musical theme like it did on the Wii. According to Nintendo, it’s not because they hate joy, but instead because the eShop has trailers and videos now and the company didn’t want to “intrude” on that content. Still, they should just put the Wii Shopping Channel theme in there as an option. Come on. -Zack ZwiezenPrevious SlideNext SlideList slidesMoving your Animal Crossing: New Horizons island will be easyList slidesMoving your Animal Crossing: New Horizons island will be easyScreenshot: Nintendo / KotakuAnimal Crossing: New Horizons only let you have one island per Switch, and you couldn’t easily back it up to the cloud. It was also a pain to transfer it between consoles when upgrading, requiring you to deal with an entirely separate smartphone app. Not so with Switch 2. System transfers have been streamlined for the new hardware, including when going from Switch 1 to Switch 2.“When you do the system transfer, everything like save data will remain on the Nintendo Switch and once it moves to the Nintendo Switch 2 as well,” hardware director Takuhiro Dohta told Polygon. The transfer will include players’ islands. “But the [Animal Crossing] island will be an actual move. So it will leave Nintendo Switch and move over to Nintendo Switch 2,” he added. Millions of players with hundreds of hours cultivating their Animal Crossing retreat can breathe a collective sigh of relief. - EGPrevious SlideNext SlideList slidesThe Switch 2 lacks Xbox-like AchievementsList slidesThe Switch 2 lacks Xbox-like AchievementsImage: Xbox / KotakuOnce again, Nintendo has decided to not include system-wide achievements in a new console. At this point, I’m not surprised. But I am still sad about it. Achievements are a great way to create a record of what you’ve played and can also challenge you to play a game a different way. Not including them on Switch 2 is a shame. -ZZPrevious SlideNext SlideList slidesAmiibo will work on Switch 2List slidesAmiibo will work on Switch 2Screenshot: Nintendo / KotakuWhile only mentioned briefly during the Nintendo Direct, the company’s NFC-enabled plastic figurines known as Amiibo will continue to work with the Switch 2 via the right Joy-Con and new Pro controller. In fact, Nintendo is releasing even more of them this year, including a set of Sages from The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom as well as third-party Amiibo from Street Fighter 6. We still don’t know what kinds of new functionality might be incorporated for games like Metroid Prime 4: Beyond or Mario Kart World but anyone’s big Amiibo collection will remain relevant heading into Nintendo’s next-gen console. —EGPrevious SlideNext SlideList slidesNintendo Switch 2 game carts still taste badList slidesNintendo Switch 2 game carts still taste badScreenshot: Giant Bomb / KotakuBack in 2017, when the original Switch came out, we discovered that the console’s game carts were covered in a bitter substance that made them taste horrible. The idea was that kids and pets would spit the tiny pieces of plastic out instead of swallowing them. Flash forward to 2025 and Nintendo has confirmed that Switch 2 carts will also be covered in the same bitter chemical. - ZZPrevious SlideNext SlideList slidesThe new C button is locked behind a paywallList slidesThe new C button is locked behind a paywallScreenshot: Nintendo / KotakuThe purpose behind the mysterious C button was finally revealed earlier this month during Nintendo’s Switch 2 Direct. It turns out the button stands for chat and it will be how you open up all the GameChat options on Switch 2. But GameChat, after an initial free trial, will only be available to paying Nintendo Online subscribers. And if you don’t pay and press the button you are told to subscribe. Neat, a physical button hidden behind a paywall! I love our dystopian future. -ZZPrevious SlideNext SlideList slidesThat cool GameCube controller might not work with all gamesList slidesThat cool GameCube controller might not work with all gamesScreenshot: Nintendo / KotakuOne of Nintendo’s most bizarre but beloved peripherals ever is making a comeback. A limited supply of modern GameCube controllers will be available for the Switch 2 which is adding games like The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker and F-Zero GX to its Switch Online Expansion Pack subscription. Yay! But Nintendo also clarified that “the controller is only compatible with Nintendo GameCube: Nintendo Classics.” Boo! However, the company also had a similar disclaimer for the NES and N64 controller re-issues on the current console, which did work with some Switch games. So it’s still possible you might be able to play Mario Kart World or, more importantly, the next Smash Bros. with the GameCube controller, it’s just not something Nintendo is committing to across the board. Update 4/23/25 4:14 p.m. ET: Nintendo sent Polygon a statement basically saying it won’t necessarily not work with other games on the Switch 2 but the company’s making no promises: “Since it doesn’t have all the buttons and features found in other controllers that can be used with the Nintendo Switch 2 system, there may be some issues when playing other games,” the company wrote. —EGPrevious SlideNext SlideList slidesZelda: The Wind Waker HD could maybe, hopefully still get ported to Switch 2List slidesZelda: The Wind Waker HD could maybe, hopefully still get ported to Switch 2Screenshot: Nintendo / KotakuFans of Nintendo’s cel-shaded, seafaring Zelda entry have been waiting for the company to port the HD remaster of Wind Waker for the Wii U to the Switch just like it’s done with nearly every other Wii U game. When the company revealed GameCube games coming to Switch Online, it seemed like a clear signal that was never going to happen. But it turns out there might still be hope, thought it sounds slim. Kinda Funny Games co-host Tim Gettys recently said that he’d asked the senior VP of product development and publishing at Nintendo of America if the Switch Online port precluded the Wii U version from still being brought forward at some point. “He was very quick to say no, like all options are on the table,” Gettys said. “Obviously nothing’s confirmed one way or another but there are many examples of games that are on NSO and you can still get them in a different way whether it’s a remake or just the same port version or whatever it is, so interesting that they didn’t say it’s not happening but essentially it was ‘never say never, it’s Nintendo.’” - EG

Latest PS5 Update Brings Back Retro Themes And Adds Some New Features
playstationByZack ZwiezenPublished3 hours agoWe may earn a commission from links on this page.Image: Sony / KotakuLate last year, Sony added a couple of nostalgic PlayStation 5 dashboard themes the recreated the experience of using an older PlayStation console. People really liked these themes, but Sony said they were temporary and eventually they were all removed. But now they’re coming back for good. Suggested ReadingThe Best Reveals From The Game Awards 2023 Share SubtitlesOffEnglishSuggested ReadingThe Best Reveals From The Game Awards 2023 Share SubtitlesOffEnglishThe Best Reveals From The Game Awards 20232024 was the 30th anniversary of the original PlayStation. In December, as part of that celebration, an update for PS5 added a really cool PS1-style boot up animation. And if you checked out the PS5's settings you could find dashboard themes for the console that emulated some past PlayStation consoles, like the PS2 and PS3. People really liked these, but Sony removed them a few weeks later. Starting tomorrow, however, these previously temporary themes will return as part of a bigger PS5 update. On April 23, Sony announced that the next big update for PS5 will bring back all the retro PlayStation themes from last year. In January, Sony promised players it would bring the themes back “in the coming months,” and that time has come. The PS5 update arrives tomorrow, on April 24. Sadly, it doesn’t look like the PS1 intro is coming back. It’s not just returning themes included in tomorrow’s update. Sony has also revealed a whole suite of new sound options as part of a new “Sound Focus” feature that lets you control which types of noise you’ll hear better while playing a game. For example, you can boost voices or footstep audio so you can hear them better while playing a game. Sony says this will be optional and only supports headsets. Here are the presets you can tinker with when tomorrow’s update goes live:Boost Low Pitch: Amplify low-frequency sounds like roaring engines and rumbling noises.Boost Voices: Amplify voice chats, character voices, and other middle-frequency sounds.Boost High Pitch: Amplify high-frequency sounds like footsteps and metallic noises.Boost Quiet Sounds: Amplify low-volume sounds in a wide range of frequencies.

Windsurf slashes prices as competition with Cursor heats up
AI coding assistant startup Windsurf cut its prices “across the board” it announced on Monday, touting “massive savings” for its users as competition with its rival Cursor intensifies. Windsurf said it’s getting rid of its complex system of “flow action credits,” which charged developers for actions its AI did in the background. It’s also cutting prices for its team plans to $30 per user per month down from $35, while making its enterprise plans “much cheaper,” per the announcement. Windsurf product marketer Rob Hou proclaimed on X that Windsurf now has “BY FAR the best and most affordable pricing structure of all AI coding tools on the market,” crediting this to Windsurf optimizing its GPU usage.  Hou criticized “confusing” competitor plans priced at $20 a month in an apparent dig at Cursor’s individual monthly plan, which starts at $20 compared to Windsurf’s $15. The pricing overhaul comes as Windsurf is reportedly being considered for an acquisition by OpenAI for $3 billion (Cursor’s creator Anysphere is in talks to raise at a $10 billion valuation). As TechCrunch previously reported, Windsurf is the smaller of the two coding assistant startups, generating about $100 million in ARR compared to Cursor’s $300 million. OpenAI originally wanted to buy Cursor, but it’s growing so quickly that it’s not in the market to be sold. Although Windsurf hasn’t confirmed the OpenAI acquisition reports, it has recently stepped up its public collaborations with OpenAI. For example, Windsurf’s CEO Varun Mohan appeared earlier this month in OpenAI’s launch video for its latest API model family. And as part of the pricing change announcement, Windsurf is lavishing its users with another week of free and unlimited usage of OpenAI’s latest GPT-4.1 and o4-mini models.  The big question is whether Cursor ends up cutting its own prices in response to Windsurf’s revamp. That might risk a price war, making it harder for both startups to scale up profitably. Windsurf, which declined to comment for this article, said in its announcement that it’s continuing to deliver on its promise “from the very beginning” to pass savings back to its users.  Cursor creator Anysphere didn’t respond to a request for comment.
