3DPRINTINGINDUSTRY.COMNorth American Scalmalloy Production Begins with APWORKS and EquispheresAPWORKS, a subsidiary of Airbus focused on metal additive manufacturing solutions, and Equispheres, a Canadian producer of advanced aluminum powders, announced an alliance to establish North American production capacity for Scalmalloy. This high-strength aluminum-magnesium-scandium alloy, engineered specifically for 3D printing, will be manufactured using predominantly locally sourced raw materials. Equispheres will provide a secure North American supply chain for Scalmalloy powder, optimized for additive manufacturing. The two companies have entered a non-binding understanding and are now exploring avenues for future production, distribution, and technical alignment. Further details will be released as discussions advance. Developed and patented by APWORKS, Scalmalloy was purpose-built for laser powder bed fusion. Its mechanical properties are comparable to those of 7000 series aluminum, offering high strength, superior ductility, and excellent processability. While the alloy is licensed to producers in Europe and Asia, Equispheres is set to become the first company to establish a North American supply chain for Scalmalloy, relying on primarily regional raw materials. Scalmalloy is only available through licensed distributors, and adoption in critical aerospace, defense, and motorsport programs has been supported by a large, established database of materials data. Parts made of Scalmalloy can be welded to form larger assemblies, and its corrosion resistance is comparable to 5000 series aluminum alloys. Engineered for performance, Scalmalloy offers mechanical properties comparable to 7000 series aluminum. Photo via Equispheres. Equispheres produces optimized aluminum alloy powders that support faster build rates compared with traditional powders, achieving these improvements with no adverse effects on mechanical properties. The company’s proprietary powder technology has consistently demonstrated the capability to enhance the performance of metal additive manufacturing processes, supporting both production speed and part reliability. APWORKS has focused on lightweight design and advanced material development since its founding as an Airbus subsidiary. The company’s flagship alloy, Scalmalloy, combines exceptional strength, corrosion resistance, and low weight—characteristics essential to demanding applications in aerospace, automotive, and motorsport. Materials and process innovation remain central to APWORKS’ work, supporting a global client base with advanced solutions for metal additive manufacturing. “Scalmalloy will be a great addition to our line of high-performance materials for serial additive manufacturing,” said Kevin Nicholds, CEO of Equispheres. “We’re excited to be in discussions with APWORKS about producing this high-strength alloy for aluminum parts. North American supply of critical materials such as aluminum-scandium alloys is a key step toward securing the aerospace supply chain.” Jonathan Meyer, CEO of APWORKS, noted, “Equispheres is a logical choice for expanding Scalmalloy production into North America. They are widely regarded for their expertise in producing high-quality aluminum powders for additive manufacturing, and their access to domestic sources of aluminum and scandium is an important factor in supply chain resilience in an increasingly uncertain world.” Evan Butler-Jones, Vice-President of Product & Strategy at Equispheres, emphasized the broader implications: “Scalmalloy powder made in Equispheres’ North American facility will eliminate many of the adoption barriers that have historically limited the use of this alloy in critical programs. By combining the excellent properties of Scalmalloy with our proprietary powder technology, we can deliver an ideal material solution for the most demanding AM applications.” Scalmalloy test part. Photo via Equispheres. Future updates on North American Scalmalloy production and supply chain alignment will be announced as APWORKS and Equispheres move forward with the project. The initiative is seen as a significant step toward strengthening regional supply chains for advanced manufacturing, providing critical material solutions for aerospace, defense, and other industries. WWW.COMPUTERWEEKLY.COMData breach class action costs mount upOrganisations holding data on US citizens must do more to address gaps in their cyber security posture and respond to incidents in a timelier fashion if they are to avoid falling victim to rising legal costs. An analysis of the past six months of data breach filings Stateside, conducted by continuous controls monitoring (CCM) specialist Panaseer, found that organisations are paying out millions of dollars in regulatory fines, class action settlements and individual payouts. From August 2024 to February 2025, the data – drawn from third-party sources – revealed that 43 lawsuits were filed and 73 settlements reached. Panaseer found US organisations have paid a total of $154,557,000 (£116,195,000) in class action costs since last August, with settlements averaging $3m and the largest hitting $21m. Individual payouts to affected employees or customers ranged from $150 a head to $12,000, money that many can ill-afford to add when other costs, such as engaging third-party forensics and remediation services, are taken into account. “While people – and the courts – can be understanding when a company falls victim to an attack, they’re far less forgiving when it looks like the organisation failed in its duty of care around data,” says Jonathan Gill, CEO at Panaseer. “But most breaches don’t happen because companies wilfully ignore security. Instead, they will set a target risk position, then over time slide back and take on more exposure than intended because well-intentioned people don’t have information they can trust, presented in a language they understand, to do the important work. It’s a process problem, not a people problem.” Read more about data breach costs An effective risk management policy can help companies determine the best ways to offset the costs associated with a data breach and avoid reputational damage. In addition to the $5 million, Deloitte is covering the cost of the RIBridges data breach call centre, credit monitoring and identity protection for affected individuals. IBM publishes data on the spiralling costs of cyber attacks and data breaches, while researchers identify what appears to be the largest ransomware payment ever made. Gill said that without a system of record in place covering incident preparedness, the gap between where businesses think they are and where they actually are can widen until organisations believe they are doing everything right, when the reality is much different. “Assumptions about coverage can mask critical blind spots: unpatched systems, misconfigurations and unnoticed gaps that persist beneath the surface,” he said. “And as our analysis shows, these ‘unknown unknowns’ can be incredibly costly, not just in fines and legal fees, but in reputational damage and loss of customer trust.” The most common failings leading to costly payouts were inadequate cyber security measures, noted in 50% of filings and 97% of settlements; failure to encrypt data, noted in 40% of filings but just 1% of settlements; and delays to breach notifications, noted in 10% of filings and 3% of settlements. Overall, the data show US data breach litigation reached record levels in 2024, with filings doubling over 2023. Notably, states with tougher privacy laws, such as California, Florida, Illinois and New Jersey, unsurprisingly saw the most class action activity. Gill said organisations needed to recognise that the best defence against winding up in a US court is to be able to demonstrate and prove that they have conducted appropriate and effective due diligence around their security – starting by painting a clear and accurate picture of their core data and IT assets, and the measures that are in place to protect them. “Demonstrating a good faith effort is one of the strongest defences against legal action,” he said. “Yet the root cause of today’s cyber security challenges isn’t just threats, it’s the way we manage them. “The attack surface is expanding, visibility is shrinking and security teams are juggling an ever-growing stack of siloed solutions – 83 on average, from 29 different vendors,” said Gill. “This lack of visibility creates a ripple effect. Security teams struggle to track assets, decision-makers lack the right insights and stakeholders can’t translate technical complexity into business risk. Over time, controls drift, alert fatigue sets in and preventable breaches occur.” To break this cycle, he urged chief information security officers to bring security back to three foundational basics – visibility, alignment and clarity – with a system of record that functions similarly to how Workday works for HR leaders, or Salesforce for sales. “[A] trusted, truthful source gives teams a single, validated view of security data, understandable by all stakeholders,” said Gill. “This in turn allows teams to report on cyber security and drive action based on data-driven insights, mapped to business priorities. “This way, organisations can prevent problems before they escalate, streamline operations and move from reactive firefighting to proactive resilience. And then, even if the worst happens, they can show they did the right things.”0 Комментарии 0 Поделились 31 Просмотры

WWW.TECHSPOT.COMDiscord co-founder steps down, new CEO appointed as IPO preparations ramp upIn brief: Discord will enter the next phase of its journey under new leadership. Co-founder and CEO Jason Citron shared the news with employees in a recent memo, which was also made public on the company's blog. Discord was conceived by Citron and Stanislav Vishnevskiy, who wanted to create something akin to a virtual living room where friends could chat with each other about games they like. In fact, Final Fantasy XI was a big inspiration for the chat service which is now used by hundreds of millions of people each month. The service went live in May of 2015. Its focus is still on gamers, but others have also adopted Discord for things like workplace chat and to discuss various hobbies or interests. Humam Sakhnini has been brought in to succeed Citron. Sakhnini arrives with more than 15 years of experience in the gaming industry, which includes a stint at Activision Blizzard where he served as chief strategy officer overseeing franchises like Call of Duty and World of Warcraft. He also led King as president from 2019 through early 2022. Sakhnini will officially take over on April 28, but he won't be tossed into the deep end without a life preserver. Citron will stick around to help with the onboarding process and serve in an advisory capacity. He will also retain his position on the board of directors, we are told. In March 2024, Discord revealed it had over 200 million monthly active users and was planning an IPO in the not-too-distant future. That still has not happened, and it is interesting that it won't be coming to fruition under Citron's watch. Citron said building Discord has been one of the most rewarding experiences of his life, adding that he is deeply grateful for the many friendships, challenges, and achievements along the way. Looking ahead at what will be needed from Discord's CEO over the coming years, Citron said it's time for him to "hire himself out of a job." // Related Stories Image credit: Ella Don, Alexander Shatov0 Комментарии 0 Поделились 29 Просмотры
