In a world where emerging designers often struggle to break through the noise, the Designers’ Residency by New York-based Colony offers something invaluable and rare: time, space, and meaningful support. As a cooperative gallery, design studio, and strategy firm, Colony has long championed independent American design. Through the Residency led by Colony founder Jean Lin and Art Director Madeleine Parsons, it extends that ethos to the next generation of designers. Now in its third year (see 2023 and 2024), the 8-month intensive Residency program provides early-career studios with mentorship, subsidized shop space, hands-on gallery experience, and the chance to debut their work to the international design community. The 2025 cohort introduces three standout studios to the Colony roster: Another.World, Studio B.C. Joshua, and MTM Studio. Each brings a unique point of view, rooted in storytelling, material exploration, and expressive form. Joshua’s Harlem Cottage collection is a nod to the cabin culture of his Minnesota upbringing and the design traditions of the African diaspora. Through sculptural seating, hand-painted tables, and light fixtures inspired by the Harlem Renaissance, Joshua honors Black history with thoughtful detail and artistic expression. Works like the Vincent Chair and Dogtrot Table balance structure with soul, while evoking visual languages shaped by hair patterns, quilting, and Southern architecture. The result is a narrative-rich collection that offers an intimate, tactile reflection on identity and belonging in American culture. Studio B.C. Joshua Studio B.C. Joshua Blake C. Joshua of Studio B.C. Joshua MTM Studio Last but not least, Brooklyn-based designer Maxwell Taylor-Milner of MTM Studio brings a meditative approach to material and form. Influenced by their background in art history, childhood in rural northern New Mexico, and work experience at the Donald Judd’s Chianti Foundation in Marfa, Texas, Taylor-Milner’s Recent Relics collection is a study in elemental transformation. Each object expresses a single material and its defining property, from the luminous cast resin SPE Lamp to the sandcast CGB Mirror and charred pine VDB Desk. Resilient and quiet, the works speak to the elemental effects of nature and the lasting impression that leaves on a single object. In an ideal world, you'd lead a long and happy life only ever shutting down and restarting your PC via the Start menu. Click the power icon, choose your option, and you're done. However, life doesn't always work out like we plan it, and sometimes you may need to trigger a restart or shutdown from the command prompt instead.Maybe something is stopping the Start menu from working, or perhaps you find yourself on a screen where the Start menu isn't available. One of the scenarios where I use the command prompt to shut down Windows is when I'm in the initial setup phase for the operating system and don't want to complete it right away. The shutdown command can turn off your PC on a timer. Credit: Lifehacker You might also have loaded the command prompt interface to try and troubleshoot a problem that's stopping Windows from working—in which case you need to know how to power off or reboot your computer without pressing and holding the power button. As far as these shutdown and restart commands are concerned, you can use either for the job, but if you ever need to run more advanced text commands, scripts, and automations, PowerShell is better set up to accommodate them.You can launch either the command prompt or PowerShell from the Start menu: Just type the first few letters of either utility into the search box at the top to find them. There are various other options too, like right-clicking on the Start menu button and choosing Terminal, or by typing "cmd" into the search box on the taskbar and hitting Enter.Using the "shutdown" command The text command you need to either shut down or restart your Windows computer is 'shutdown'. If you type it into the command prompt or PowerShell and then hit Enter, you'll get a full description of shutdown, and all the ways you can use it (by the way, you can add "| more" to this or any command to see a page of text at a time).Type "shutdown /s" to trigger a standard shutdownThe most basic flags you'll need are "shutdown /s" and "shutdown /r" to power off and restart your computer, respectively. In both cases you'll see a dialog box on screen telling you what's happening, and the action is taken in less than a minute. These commands will initiate a normal shutdown process, so you'll be prompted to save any unsaved work in your open programs that usually do that. This will restart Windows and launch the advanced boot options screen. Credit: Lifehacker Type "shutdown /s /f" to force a shutdownTo force all apps to close without any further prompting—perhaps if you need to make sure the shutdown or restart goes through without a hitch—add the "/f" to the end of your command (so, either "shutdown /s /f" for a shutdown or "shutdown /r /f" for a restart). You do this at your own risk though, with the risk of losing data that hasn't already been saved, and it's probably best left as a last resort.Type "shutdown /r /o" to access advanced boot optionsFor troubleshooting purposes, the "shutdown /r /o" command is useful because it reboots your computer into the advanced boot options screen. That's the one that gives you access to features such as using a USB drive to recover your PC, running the built-in start-up repair utility, and rolling back recent updates to Windows. You can also get back to the command prompt from here without starting the operating system. The shutdown command can also be used to stop a shutdown. Credit: Lifehacker Time your shutdown by adding "/t"Another flag that can be useful is the "/t" flag followed by a space and a number. This puts the shutdown or the restart on a delay, giving you time to close apps or finish downloads. The number is the number of seconds Windows should wait, and it can go from 0 (instant) all the way up to 315360000—that's 10 years, if you were wondering. If the seconds are set to anything above zero, the "/f" flag is also applied.Stop a shutdown with "shutdown /a"One final one that you might find helpful: You can use "shutdown /a" to abort a shutdown that's currently underway (perhaps one that you've set on a timer). While Apple's stylus lineup can be confusing, it's clear that the Apple Pencil Pro is the most advanced model of the bunch. If you've been looking to grab one, whether it's for note-taking or more intricate drawing, the device is back down to $99 at Amazon, Walmart and Best Buy. That's $30 off Apple's list price, and while it's $10 more than the all-time low we saw last October, it matches the largest discount we've tracked in 2025. Apple released this top-end model last year. It offers features such as pressure sensitivity, a squeeze gesture to see menu options and a built-in gyroscope that improves the process of changing your pen's orientation and brush tools. The hardware is as comfy to hold as the older second-gen Pencil, plus it works with Apple's Find My network, so you can easily locate the tool at any time. The catch is that it's only compatible with select iPads: You'll need an iPad Pro with an M4 chip, an M2 or M3 iPad Air or the most recent iPad mini to take advantage. If you don't want to spend quite that much, the USB-C Apple Pencil is technically on sale for $69 as well. That's $10 less than buying from Apple direct, though it's a price we've seen at third-party retailers fairly often over the past several months. This model has most of the basic features, including tilt sensitivity, the ability to attach to an iPad magnetically and a "hover" feature that lets you preview inputs before you make them. These strange-looking buses operate in rural Shikoku, Japan. They're Toyota buses that have had an unusual proboscis added. The non-standard snout houses an extra axle fitted with steel wheels. Another of these axles, unseen, is tucked under the rear. When the roadgoing buses get to the train tracks, the axles with the steel wheels are lowered onto the rails. The bus can then power itself along the railway tracks.These DMV (Dual-Mode Vehicle) buses were developed by Japan's Asa Seaside Railway as a cost-effective way to provide public transportation. While the modifications require investment, the buses are significantly cheaper to maintain that trains—and also prevent residents from needing to transfer between travel modes.
