This is the stuff from the past that has inspired some of the best things you’re listening to now. Both of those deals represent all-time lows as well.  Apple only released the MacBook Air M4 in mid-March and we've since named it 2025's best MacBook overall. We gave it in a 92 in our review, as it still packs an accurate (albeit 60Hz) display and excellent keyboard in a slim, sturdy build that weighs 2.7 pounds and measures 0.44 inches thick. But it's the M4 chip that really gives the Air a boost; the 13-inch model has a 10-core CPU, 8-core GPU and 16-core Neural Engine, all of which are more than fast enough for most everyday tasks. Battery life is another plus: The notebook lasted over 18 hours while playing HD video in our testing. If you're looking for something a little bigger, then it might be worth getting the 15-inch MacBook Air M4. This week, the discount retail chain Big Lots will open dozens of new stores. The openings are the third part of a four-wave relaunch of the brand, which marks a radical turnaround for a chain that was expected to close every store permanently after it filed for bankruptcy last year. Here’s what you need to know about the latest round of Big Lots store openings. Big Lots back from bankruptcy brink Back in December 2024, Big Lots filed for bankruptcy after years of financial struggles. The company announced that it would close all of its 800 stores and permanently go out of business, and it brought in liquidation specialists Gordon Brothers to oversee the closure. But in a last-minute deal, Variety Wholesalers, which owns discount chains including Super Dollar and Bargain Town, swooped in and agreed to buy 219 Big Lots locations from Gordon Brothers. Variety then announced that it would reopen those locations after a brief period of closure for remodeling and restocking, and continue to operate them under the Big Lots brand. As Fast Company previously reported, those 219 Big Lots reopenings would be conducted in a phased approach made up of four waves: The first wave of stores opened in April. The second wave of stores opened in early May. This week, the third wave of that phased reopening begins. 78 more Big Lots locations to open on May 15 On Thursday, May 15, an additional 78 Big Lots stores will reopen in Variety Wholesalers’ third wave. The 78 store openings will occur in 13 states: Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Michigan, Mississippi, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia. The Shenzhen Science & Technology Museum is a prime example, featuring a distinctive futuristic design focused on energy efficiency. First unveiled in 2020, the museum is located in Shenzhen’s Guangming District. This project highlights the studio’s ongoing commitment to innovation and bold architectural statements, ensuring their work continues to capture attention and set new standards in sustainable design. Designer: Zaha Hadid Architects The design team employed advanced computer modeling and extensive wind tunnel testing to optimize the building’s performance, ensuring it maintains a stable temperature even during the peak of summer. The resulting structure evokes the sleek contours of a cruise ship or even a spaceship, standing out with its futuristic aesthetic. Zaha Hadid Architects describe the museum as resembling celestial bodies orbiting in space, emphasizing both its innovative form and its dynamic presence in the cityscape. “Guided by passive environmental strategies, the design process employed advanced computer simulations to test and refine the building’s form, spaces and envelope for optimal performance within the annual solar radiation, temperatures, humidity, prevailing winds, air quality and other variable conditions of Shenzhen’s subtropical climate and location,” said ZHA. “The building’s orientation has been determined to minimize solar heat gain within its central atrium while maintaining panoramic views of the park.” The museum’s interior is expansive, offering 128,276 sq m (about 1.38 million sq ft) of space. This area is organized into permanent and temporary exhibition halls, immersive theaters, cinemas, research labs, an innovation center, and a variety of visitor amenities. The interior decor continues the striking, futuristic style of the exterior, creating a cohesive and engaging atmosphere throughout the building. While the Shenzhen Science & Technology Museum isn’t strictly green, it incorporates impressive energy-efficient features to balance its large footprint. Stainless-steel exterior panels form a ventilated gap between the facade and walls, reducing heat from sunlight and weather. This system continues onto the roof, which is fitted with solar panels to generate on-site power and limit reliance on the grid. The facade also has a nano-scale oxide film for self-protection and self-cleaning. The Shenzhen Science & Technology Museum uses many recyclable materials in its construction and features a smart water management system. Greywater recycling and rainwater collection help cut down on the building’s reliance on municipal water. This approach adds to the museum’s overall efficiency. The project reflects Zaha Hadid Architects’ ongoing commitment to innovative design in China under Patrik Schumacher. Macworld When iOS 18.5 arrives for iPhone users this week, there won’t be any major new features or exciting Apple Intelligence updates. The update, which comes a month ahead of WWDC 2025, doesn’t bring major changes, but rather adds some nice new features, including new wallpaper and improvements to Screen Time and the Apple TV app. However, there’s one specific new feature that will have a more profound impact on iPhone users. At long last, iOS 18.5 enables support for carrier-provided satellite features on iPhone 13 models. If you’re curious about what exactly this means for users, read on as we detail what’s new in iOS 18.5. What’s new in iOS 18.5 According to Apple, iOS 18.5 comes with five notable enhancements. One of them is the new Pride Harmony wallpaper available for iPhones and iPads, which is part of Apple’s 2025 Pride Collection to mark LGBTQ+ Pride Month in June, which also includes new watch faces and an exclusive Apple Watch band. After updating to iOS 18.5, you’ll find the new Pride Harmony wallpaper available for free in the Display settings. It shows rainbow stripes that dynamically change every time you unlock your iPhone or iPad. New wallpaper to celebrate Pride month will be part of iOS 18.5.Foundry For parents, Apple has also added an important feature to Screen Time, which lets parents manage how children use their devices. With the iOS 18.5 update, parents will now receive a notification when their child enters the correct password to bypass the Screen Time restrictions. Apple is also making it easier to buy or subscribe to content in the Apple TV app on a third-party device or smart TV. Instead of tediously entering their password manually, users will have the option to authenticate and confirm the purchase using an iPhone. In addition, iOS 18.5 fixes a bug that showed a black screen in the new Apple Vision Pro app released with iOS 18.4. iPhone 13 gains satellite capabilities But iOS 18.5 has another trick up its sleeve, and it’s a pretty big one if you own an iPhone 14. With this update, iPhone 13 owners will have access to carrier-provided satellite features for the first time. Support for carrier-provided satellite features was first added with iOS 18.3 on iPhone 14 and later, and it lets users send text messages via satellite in areas without cellular connectivity. Apple offers satellite service through Globalstar for free for two years with the activation of a new iPhone, enabling users to text emergency services, request roadside assistance, message friends and family, and share their location, even when outside cellular range. Satellite features are coming to the iPhone 13 for the first time in iOS 18.5.Foundry Carriers have also begun to offer the service, with T-Mobile recently teaming up with Starlink and Verizon partnering with AST SpaceMobile. Essentially, the carriers use a technology called “Direct to Cell,” in which satellites act as cell towers in space and kick in when there’s no cellular signal. T-Mobile says it plans to expand this technology to support data and voice over satellite in the future, while Verizon recently tested its first satellite-to-cellular-enabled video call. Here’s how to check if you can use carrier-provided satellite features: 1. Open the Settings app 2. Tap Cellular 3. Select your carrier or phone number (if you have more than one SIM registered) 4. Look for the Satellite toggle in the list. If you don’t see the Satellite option, your carrier probably doesn’t support it yet. If you have this option enabled and your iPhone is connected to a satellite through your carrier, you’ll see the “SAT” symbol in the iPhone’s status bar. Bonus feature: Mail improvements Although not listed in Apple’s official release notes, iOS 18.5 also brings some improvements to the Mail app. With iOS 18.2, Apple introduced a redesigned version of the Mail app with smart categories, which automatically organizes your inbox using Apple Intelligence. However, not everyone seems to have liked the new Mail interface, and some users have opted to switch back to the old layout. You might like the new Mail app a little more with a couple of tweaks in iOS 18.5.Foundry To appeal to users who don’t love the new interface, Apple has introduced two important changes with iOS 18.5. First, the “All Mail” category is now always visible by default, whereas previously users had to make a swipe gesture to reveal this category. This means you can still use smart categories while seeing all emails at once, if you prefer. Apple has also added the option to hide contact icons, making it look more like the old interface prior to iOS 18.2. Simply tap the three-dot button in the top right and deselect the “Show Contact Photos” option. You can update your iPhone or iPad to iOS 18.5 by going to Settings > General > Software Update. It is expected to arrive later today or tomorrow.

Jamf wants to make enterprise support for Android as easy as it has become for Apple and plans to expand into Android device management beginning in July, the company said. The new support will be featured within the Jamf for Mobile solution, with the idea behind this integration to make it much easier for Apple-based enterprises to also support Android devices in use alongside their iPhone, iPad, and Mac fleets. Raising all the boats Enterprise tech will be able to manage Apple and Android platforms from within the same Jamf console they already use. The company stressed that the addition of Android support should improve its offer to Apple-based businesses. “For years, we’ve helped organizations do more with mobile by focusing on the best platform for work: Apple,” said Henry Patel, chief strategy officer at Jamf. “By adding basic Android enrollment to Jamf for Mobile, we’re enabling Apple-first organizations to eliminate friction — so a few Android devices don’t stand in the way of delivering exceptional Apple experiences at scale.”  Patel stressed that the upcoming Android support should be considered a positive additive to the company’s existing Apple focus, rather than reflecting any thawing ardor for the company’s computing platforms. “This addition helps us support customers who primarily use Apple, but also have some Android in their environment — without forcing them into a one-size-fits-all UEM platform,” he said. I expect Jamf wants to approach that challenge with its customary “consumer simple” mindset, intentionally ensuring that supporting Android alongside Apple creates no additional friction and is convincingly easy to use. “Jamf’s commitment to Apple remains unwavering,” he added. Apple MDM has become a diverse market It is, of course, also true that the Apple device management space is becoming increasingly competitive, with many new players achieving market traction. Hexnode, Fleet, and others each desire clear product positioning to help their services stand out. And while the Apple-in-the-enterprise market is growing swiftly enough to sustain multiple providers, Jamf is clearly not blind to the reality that several competitors now offer support across multiple platforms — some support every platform. Not that this reality appears to have dented Jamf much.  The company’s most recent financial report revealed a 10% increase in revenue, exceeding estimates to reach $167.6 million for $37.6 million non-GAAP operating income. Highlights in that quarter included the acquisition of Identity Automation and international revenue growth of 16%. The company expects FY 2025 revenue to increase 10%-11% year-on-year.  From the perspective of the Apple MDM industry, Jamf doesn’t seem to be under pressure — yet. But as one of the premium Apple MDM services, the company must continue to polish its offerings to help maintain its leadership reputation.  Building reputations, one announcement at a time In business, halos seldom shine without a little bit of help, and the addition of Android support to the service Jamf provides to enterprises managing 1,000+ devices is a convenience for those managing diverse fleets. It’s a way the company can continue to help its products stand out. That also means Jamf won’t be alone in making service optimization news in the coming months; the all-important enterprise buying season is upon us, which means I expect most credible Apple-in-the-enterprise service providers to make announcements in the coming weeks.  Looking forward, Apple’s enterprise partners will also be anxious to hear about any business-focused announcements at the company’s forthcoming Worldwide Developer’s Conference (WWDC) next month. Will Apple fix some of the pain points, such as more automated deployment tools, enhancements to Declarative Device Management, or introduce more granular controls to limit or constrain use of AI on managed devices? Only time — and Apple’s keynote and developer’s presentations — will tell.
