  • In-App Purchases Are Changing for Spotify Users on iOS

If you use Spotify to listen to audiobooks on your iPhone, you now have fewer hurdles to clear to purchase and download titles to your device. Apple has approved an update that allows Spotify users to view pricing and buy individual audiobooks as well as add "top-up" listening hours right from the iOS app. How in-app purchases are changing on iOSThis change is the outcome of a recent court ruling that requires Apple to allow app developers to provide links to external sites outside of the App Store to make purchases. Previously, users had to seek out where to sign up for subscriptions—in an external browser, for example—or potentially pay a premium price to cover the App Store's 15 to 30 percent cut. In response, Spotify quickly updated its iOS app with links to its various subscription options under the Premium tab, which previously had simply acknowledged that such subscriptions existed and that users could find sign-ups through their web browser. How to purchase audiobooks on SpotifyWith the update, users will now see a Buy button under individual titles in the iOS app and will no longer need to make purchases on Spotify's web player before returning to mobile to listen. Spotify includes 15 hours of use-it-or-lose-it audiobook listening time with Premium plans and the separate Audiobooks Access subscription—you can now add "top-up" listening hours within the app as well. To manage your listening time on mobile, go to Profile > Settings and privacy > Account > Plan name > Manage audiobook time. Top-ups cost for 10 hours. Finally, if Spotify isn't your go-to, check out our top picks for audiobook services.

  • Google still doesn't have much to show for Android XR

When Google unveiled Android XR last year, it seemed like a clear response to Apple's Vision Pro: It was a plan for a true mixed reality platform that could easily hop between AR, VR and smart glasses like Meta's Ray-Bans. At Google I/O 2025 today, Google announced the second developer preview for Android XR, and it also showed off a bit more about how it could work in headsets and smart glasses. It'll likely be a while before we see Android XR devices in action, though, as Google also revealed Samsung's Project Moohan headset will arrive later this year. Additionally, Xreal is also building Project Aura, a pair of tethered smart glasses powered by the platform.
Update: Google demoed prototype Android XR smart glasses at I/O with live translation, which Engadget's Karissa Bell called "lightweight, but with a limited field of view." Google isn't planning to sell those devices, but it is partnering with Warby Parker and Gentle Monster to provide frames for future smart glasses.
Basically, there really isn't much to get excited about just yet. It's clear that Google is working hard to catch up with both Apple and Meta, which actually have XR products on the shelves already. Given that Google tends to kill its ambitious projects with a swiftness — just take a look at Google Glass, Cardboard and Daydream, which were all early stabs at AR and VR — it's hard to put much faith in the future of Android XR. Is the availability of much better XR hardware enough to make the platform a success? At this point, it's just too tough to tell.
For now, though, it looks like Google is aiming to deliver all of the features you'd expect with Android XR. Its second developer preview adds the ability to play 180-degree and 360-degree immersive videos, bring hand-tracking into apps and support dynamic refresh rates. As expected, Google is also making it easier to integrate its Gemini AI into Android XR apps, something the company promised when it first announced the platform last year.
    Google
In a series of pre-rendered videos, Google showed off the ideal ways to use Gemini in smart glasses and headsets. If your glasses have a built-in display, you could see a small Google Map to give you directions, message friends while you're prepping dinner or take a picture while dancing with your partner at sunset. All I can say is: "Cool demo, bro." Get back to us when this is all working in headsets and glasses we can actually wear.
Update 5/21, 2:45PM ET: This story has been updated with references to Google's XR prototype glasses. This article originally appeared on Engadget at

  • Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7 to Arrive With Samsung’s First 3nm Chip After Skipping the Galaxy S25 Series: Report

Samsung's Galaxy Z lineup this year is going to be interesting for a variety of reasons. Slated for a July launch, there's the bigger, book-style Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 that is tipped to get plenty of hardware upgrades along with a bigger display and a thinner design. Next, we have the Galaxy Z Flip 7, which is said to get a smaller share of design updates. Reports also hint at the existence of a Galaxy Z Flip 7 FE model, which will be an affordable clamshell much like the Motorola Razr 50.Citing a reliable source, SamMobile states that Samsung's upcoming clamshell foldable will be powered by an Exynos chipset. This would be none other than the much-rumoured Exynos 2500, which was expected to make its debut with the Samsung Galaxy S25 this year but was held back because of poor yield.Previous repots hinted at this change, but a recent one also pointed out that the Exynos 2500 would not make it to the expected Galaxy Z Flip 7 FE model. The source told the publication that this would be a 3nm chip with a maximum clock speed of 3.3GHz. The SoC has a 10-core CPU and an Xclipse 950 GPU with 16MB of L3 cache. Built using the second-gen 3nm node, in Samsung's own foundry, the chipset was recently rumoured. The news of a Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7 featuring the same chip aligns with older reports, as it is expected to be announced in July.According to SamMobile, only select markets will get this new processor. The Exynos 2500 SoC is currently said to make it to most Samsung markets including India and South Korea. Whether or not it performs on par with rival chipsets is something we will find out when the smartphone is launched, but the Exynos 2400inside the Galaxy S24 did well in our review, so it might just be the perfect fit for a foldable phone. If Samsung does launch a Galaxy Z series smartphone with a home-grown Exynos SoC, it would be the first time it's doing so as all of Samsung's foldable models have always featured Qualcomm chipsets in the past.

The game me and my friend spent the most time in on the N64. Just endless hours of multiplayer with various settings. Used to plaster the Elvis on our team with proximity mines and just let them run into the enemy. We still quote things from back then in Fortnite sessions today lol.

One of my favorite games of all time. So packed with content and endlessly replayable, I'll never tire of it. So happy the 360 version is BC on modern Xbox consoles, so it's never more than a button press away. It belongs to the same category as the Sandlot Earth Defense Force games, Age of Empires 2 and others, that are the first thing I install, when getting a new system and which are never erased regardless of what I need room for.

I discovered it this year using the fan PC port, and I'm glad I did.

Awesome game, but even playing with M+KB, it was very difficult.

Playing on the highest difficulty reminded me a bit of the design philosophy of Hotline Miami, trying multiple times the same levels until you succeed doing a good run.

Awesome atmosphere and music as well!

  • Mario Kart World Has Been in Development Since the Launch of the First Switch Console

A few hours ago, Nintendo posted another episode of its Ask the Developer Series dedicated to upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 games, and this time it's all about Mario Kart World.
This could very well be the 'killer application' of the new console. Its predecessor, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, launched shortly after the launch of the original Switch and was immediately a smashing success. The game has sold over 65 million units to date, becoming one of the best-selling premium titles of all time.
Interestingly, Kosuke Yabukirevealed in this interview that prototyping on Mario Kart World started even before the predecessor launched on the Switch, while full development began later in 2017.
We were thinking about what to do for the next Mario Kart game even during the development of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, and we began prototyping in March 2017. It was at the end of that year when we officially started work on it as a project. I felt that in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, we were able to perfect the formula that we'd been following in the series up to that point, where players race on individual courses. That’s why, this time, we wanted the gameplay to involve players driving around a large world, and we began creating a world map like this.
It's an exceedingly long time to make a game by Nintendo's standards. However, the team has significant challenges to overcome, such as doubling the amount of players in a race from 12 to 24 while adding an open world. Everything became much more feasible once the decision was made to move the project to the Nintendo Switch 2.
Kenta Sato: When we were developing for the Nintendo Switch system, it was difficult for us to incorporate everything we wanted, so we were always conscious of what we were giving up in return. We discussed things like toning down the visuals, lowering the resolution, and we even considered dropping the frame rate to 30 fps in some cases. It was a tough situation.
Kosuke Yabuki: We worked on it while kicking the can down the road in terms of deciding what to give up on, so at some point, we knew it was going to get messy. But as we'd decided to release Mario Kart 8 Deluxe — Booster Course Pass, we thought that would give us a bit more time to continue development. That's when the conversation of moving it to the Nintendo Switch 2 system came up, and this suddenly opened up a bunch of possibilities on what we could do. It was truly a ray of hope.
Our Nathan Birch was able to check out Mario Kart World during the Nintendo Switch 2 press hands-on event and came away favorably impressed:
Mario Kart World feels very much like a shiny new Mario Kart 8 model, which will be great for those looking for more of what that game offered, but there’s no denying the game feels a bit familiar at times. That said, Mario Kart World’s interconnected map is a compelling creation, and while I need to play more, I can imagine a lot of potential ways Nintendo could utilize, and possibly expand, their new racing world. Nintendo may be about to unleash the racing platform they support for the next decade and I’m intrigued to see where this road may lead us.

  • Wikipedia wants you to wear your love for an open internet on your sleeve

If you’ve always wanted to donate to Wikipedia but needed an extra nudge to do so, a new capsule collection by the German fashion brand Armedangels could be that reason.

To mark Wikipedia’s forthcoming 25th anniversary next year, Armedangels designed a 14-piece collection that turns design features from the Wikipedia user interface and experience into brand elements. Its signature bright cobalt blue, called “hyperlink blue,” is a key color, along with white and yellow core colors. One design, featured on a T-shirt and sweatshirt, uses an iconic 1972 image of Earth called “Blue Marble” that was taken during the Apollo 17 mission and is in the public domain.A text excerpt from “The Blue Marble” Wikipedia page is below the image, which is one of the most widely reproduced images in the world and “celebrates the freedom of knowledge,” according to the product description. Wikipedia’s serif “W” logo is featured throughout. The collection is available now via the Armedangels website.

The Armedangels x Wikipedia collection includes items that equate knowledge to progress, with shirts promoting freedom, peace, and equality. Ball caps with slogans like “Open Source of Information” and “Yes, I know,” are fan merch for people who love going down multi-tab Wikipedia rabbit holes. The items range in price from about for socks, for hats, for T-shirts, and for sweatshirts. The nonprofit Wikimedia Foundation—which also operates tools like Wikimedia Commons and Wikibooks—saw annual revenue of more than million in 2024, more than million of which came from donations. Some hypebeast apparel might be able to nominally improve that percentage, and it comes as the site itself has become a political lightning rod, facing increasing attacks from some on the right.Armedangels says every piece is made from 100% recycled material, and 12% of sales proceeds go to the Wikimedia Foundation. It’s “sustainability meets free knowledge,” as the fashion brand says. “Because when we know better, we do better.”

Like the pro-reading, anti-book-ban capsule collection for Penguin Random House by Online Ceramics, Armedangels x Wikipedia lends street-fashion cred to book smarts—and it raises money for valuable education resources at a time when anti-intellectualism is on the rise, and our information ecosystem has become especially polluted.

Supporting a free online encyclopedia is one way to fight back. For Wikipedia, its volunteers, readers, and fans, the site is an effective line of defense against misinformation and ignorance. Now they have a limited-edition streetwear line that feels the same way.
