  • RFK Jr.s most controversial and scientifically inaccurate claims, from autism to raw milk
    www.fastcompany.com
Robert F. Kennedy Jr., President-elect Donald Trumps pick to head the Department of Health and Human Services, is ringing alarm bells and prompting sharp criticism from Democrats who are calling him everything from dangerous, unqualified, and unserious to f*****g insane.Critics say the 70-year-old environmental lawyer and former presidential candidate, who has been accused of making numerous false and misleading claims about health and science, should be disqualified from the top health post. Thats because the secretary of HHS oversees a number of agencies that regulate much of what hes been railing against or ranting about, including vaccines, medical drugs, the health system, and our nations food.RFK Jr. also has no medical degree, which breaks with long-standing tradition for the health secretary post. The nomination is just the latest in a long line of controversial picks by Trump for his incoming administration.RFK Jr., the son of formerU.S. Attorney Generaland SenatorRobert F. Kennedy and a member of the prominent Kennedy family, ran against Trump as an independent candidate in the 2024 presidential election, and ended up endorsing Trump after dropping out of the race. The rest of the Kennedy family, longtime Democrats, have been quick to denounce RFK Jr.s alliance with Trump, calling it a betrayal and distancing themselves from both politicians public stances.Heres a look at some of RFK Jr.s controversial claims on some key health issues:COVID-19Kennedy falsely claimed that some race groups have immunity to the SARS-CoV-2 virus that causes COVID-19. COVID-19 attacks certain races disproportionately, Kennedy said. COVID-19 is targeted to attack Caucasians and Black people. The people who are most immune are Ashkenazi Jews and Chinese.Virologist Angela Rasmussen of the University of Saskatchewan has debunked this claim, arguing that Jewish or Chinese protease consensus sequences are not a thing in biochemistry, but they are in racism and antisemitism, as reported by The New York Times. The remarks have also been denounced by activist groups. The American Jewish Committeetold CNNthat RFK Jr.s assertion that COVID was genetically engineered to spare Jewish and Chinese people is deeply offensive and incredibly dangerous, and the Anti-Defamation League told the same outlet that Kennedys claim feeds into sinophobic and antisemitic conspiracy theories about COVID-19 that we have seen evolve over the last three years.Vaccines and autismKennedy, an anti-vax activist, has called the COVID-19 vaccine the deadliest vaccine ever made. Health officials have countered that the COVID-19 vaccine is safe and effective and has saved million of lives.RFK Jr. has further asserted that vaccines administered in childhood, including the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine, are linked to the development of autism in children. I do believe that autism does come from vaccines, Kennedy told Fox News.RFK Jr. blamed the preservative thimerosal, which was taken out of the MMR vaccine in 2001, but is still used in some flu vaccines, according to The Washington Post. In 2018, he helped launch the anti-vaccine group Childrens Health Defense, which criticizes the number of shots kids are given today. (Kennedy has argued hes not anti-vaccine, just pro-vaccine safety.)Dr. Paul Offit, director of the Vaccine Education Center and an infectious diseases physician at Childrens Hospital of Philadelphia, told CNN that Kennedy is a science denialist who makes misleading or false statements about the safety of the measles, mumps, and rubella vaccine.A2004 reportfrom the Institute of Medicine concluded there is no link between autism and vaccination, and dozens ofstudiesin peer-reviewed journals also disproved the notion that theMMRvaccine causes autism.Experts at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the American Academy of Pediatrics agree that the MMR vaccine is not responsible for recent increases in the number of children diagnosed with autism. The MMR vaccine is administered at around the typical age of onset for autism, so some parents mistakenly link the two events, The Washington Post noted.Vaccines have eradicated many dangerous diseases throughout history, including deadly smallpox.Raw milk and unprocessed foodsRFK Jr. said he will remove processed food from school lunches immediately, but nutritionists who remember how Trump fought against stricter school lunch standards in his first term, and how Republicans attempted to derail former first lady Michelle Obamas healthy lunch agenda, are skeptical that he will have support inside the administration. But where RFK Jr. gets more controversial isnt with his plan to crack down on unhealthy school lunches or remove food dyes from cereal, but with histhreat to fire nutritionists and other staff at the Food and Drug Administration and promote unregulated and unsafe food alternatives like unprocessed raw milk, which can cause death if contaminated.Drinking raw milkhas always been somewhat risky because it is not pasteurized, a process that kills harmful bacteria, and consuming it is associated with outbreaks of pathogens such as E. coli, which can causekidney failureand death. In a post on X, RFK Jr. made clear he would either limit or stop the FDA from regulating raw milk, vitamins, psychedelics, and much more. He has also trafficked in extreme conspiracy theories that blame the U.S. government for mass poisoning Americans.FDAs war on public health is about to end, RFK Jr. wrote just days before the presidential election. This includes its aggressive suppression of psychedelics, peptides, stem cells, raw milk, hyperbaric therapies, chelating compounds, ivermectin, hydroxychloroquine, vitamins, clean foods, sunshine, exercise, nutraceuticals and anything else that advances human health and cant be patented by Pharma.Current FDA Commissioner Dr. Robert Califf said Tuesday that not having experts, I think historically, in every society, has been a case for demise of that society, and noted to The New York Times that while the current HHS rarely interferes with scientific decisions at the FDA, its totally within the law for the president or the HHS secretary to overrule the entire FDA.

  • Theyre the most pissed-off people on the planet: The internet is falling in love with the drama on the Crumbl Cookies subreddit
    www.fastcompany.com
Allow me to introduce you to my new favorite place on the internet: the Crumbl Cookies subreddit. The fan-run subreddit r/CrumblCookies, which boasts 77,000 members, recently went viral after a user on X posted about how much everyone on there seems to actually hate Crumbl Cookies. Theyre the most pissed-off people on the planet, the X user adds.Latest obsession is the crumbl cookies subreddit. Everyone on there HATES the cookies, but they still them all every week. They're the most pissed off people on the planet. pic.twitter.com/IkbOk2JFqa Pepsi Starry Brand Partner (@StarryBrand) November 12, 2024 A quick scroll down the page includes detailed reviews of the different rotating weekly menu items, hidden behind spoiler warnings, customers vote pairing for different store locations Customer Pick Days, and offering up their top 10 cookie rankings for judgment. The one thing they have in common? They all take their cookies seriously. One fan went to the lengths of buying extra of their favorite flavor to freezethe Brownie Sundae, in case you were wonderingto defrost five months later and post a side-by-side comparison to the rereleased version. Spoiler alert: no comparison, Crumbl has once again done us dirty, declared the unhappy customer. The new cookie they describe is a flat, overcooked, dry husky of a cookie. The only flavor, they describe, is burnt, compared to the deep chocolate of the OG which tastes like a brownie (and not cardboard).New Brownie Sundae vs the OG byu/WyntersVix inCrumblCookiesOthers have taken umbrage over the recent pie offerings. Has Crumbl lost there fucking minds? An entire week of only pies, one Redditor posted in an angry rant last month. They could done one or two. Is this some sort of gambling addiction type of thing? one non-American Reddit user asks on the subreddit. Loyal fans were quick to jump to Crumbls defense. They are a very specific cookie experience, one replied. I dont just enjoy them, I love them, added another. It seems customers arent the only ones lurking on the subreddit. I worked for Crumbls corporate team and I am not joking when I tell you they had to basically take away the CEOs phone because he was addicted to doomscrolling this subreddit. He almost fired an entire department because someone leaked a cookie lineup, one user commented under the initial post on X. He was assigned a PR assistant to handle his socials because the redditors found his burner account, they added. Also because he wouldnt stop posting combative TikToks.

  • LG Display develops stretchable screen capable of expanding 50 per cent
    www.dezeen.com
After five years of development, LG Display has created a stretchable digital screen capable of expanding up to 50 per cent, which can also be twisted and bent into various shapes. The stretchable display prototype was presented at LG Science Park in Seoul as part of Final Outcome Showcase for the Stretchable Display National Project, which concluded five years of research and development of the product. It encompasses a flat, 12-inch mat displaying a rectangular screen with a resolution of 100 pixels per inch, which sits between the standard 72-300 pixels per inch of a computer monitor. The screen also displays full RGB colour.LG Display has created a stretchable screen prototype after five years of developmentThis mat can be folded, twisted and stretched without compromising the display."The stretchable display is more than just an expandable screen," said the team. "It can be folded, twisted, and reshaped, earning it the title of the 'ultimate free-form display'."Compared to a previous model released in 2022, this most recent display has an "elongation rate" of 50 per cent, versus 20 and expands from 12 inches to 18."The newly introduced stretchable display, developed through extensive collaboration, marks a significant improvement in flexibility compared to the first prototype revealed two years ago," said the team.It can be used to cover irregular surfaces"The most notable feature is the enhancement of the elongation rate from 20 per cent to an impressive 50 per cent."The team achieved the elasticity using materials "typically found in contact lenses" and micro-LEDs, which are capable of delivering high-quality visuals under shock, such as high temperatures.A new structural design also relieved stress on the display's wiring."Moreover, a new structural design was implemented to minimize physical stress on the wiring when the display is stretched, significantly boosting durability," said the team.Read: Lenovo reveals "industry's first" laptop with transparent display"This innovation ensures the display remains intact even when subjected to everyday impacts and pressure, turning once imagined technologies into reality."This flexibility allows for a variety of uses according to LG Display, as the screen can effectively be used as material to conform to surfaces. In one instance, it was showcased as part of a car dashboard with a raised central portion that acts as a digital knob and buttons that emerge from the surface, then retreat after use.Because of its material-like qualities, it could also be used in the fashion industry. It displays a similar resolution as standard monitors"If we could change the design and color of everyday clothing in real-time, it would bring a new paradigm to the fashion industry," said fashion designers Youn-Hee Park and Chung-Chung Lee."Using displays as a fabric material offers revolutionary potential for creating clothes that never become outdated."Other experiments with digital screens include a Huawei phone that can expand into a tablet and a transparent-screen laptop from Lenovo. The photography is courtesy of LGThe post LG Display develops stretchable screen capable of expanding 50 per cent appeared first on Dezeen.

  • Economical Housing For Students Preserves Historical Facades, Merging The Old & The New
    www.yankodesign.com
Canada-based ACDF Architectural firm recently designed an impressive 19-story apartment building in downtown Montreal. It is called the LINK Tower, and it beautifully merges contemporary architectural design with the preservation of historical Victorian facades. This forms a seamless and interesting combination of the old and the new, in the center of Shaughnessy Village. It is designed to be an innovative solution to the citys requirement for student housing. ACDF Architecture adopted a preservation-first approach, and saved three historic facades, instead of demolishing them. The Victorian facades were incorporated into the new construction.Designer: ACDF Architectural FirmACDF President, Maxime-Alexis Frappier was focused on creating a seamless dialogue between the past and the new tower. Rather than erasing the areas history, we wanted to respect it, said Frappier. The project maintains an important connection to the architectural identity of Shaughnessy Village by preserving the Victorian facades. A the same time, it meets the requirements of contemporary urban living. This initiative was complex and not economical, but it displayed respect and sensitivity for the local communitys history and heritage. The LINK Tower showcases a lovely modern contrast behind the Victorian facades. The facades are equipped with a bunch of architectural elements ranging from arched, gabled, and rectangular openings, which add a certain dynamism and personality to the dull and mundane concrete environment of Lincoln Street. Black granite frames and precast concrete heighten the composition while pairing well with the surrounding structures. The LINK Tower was created to be visually intriguing while harmoniously blending with its surroundings. It allows the past and the present to beautifully co-exist, elevating the architectural diversity of the street. The apartments arent as spacious as typical apartments, and they are a bit cramped, but according to ACDF, the design meets students needs well without feeling too restrained. It displays an efficient use of available space which reduces operating and construction costs, while also saving energy. It is equipped with 122 units, ranging from studios to three-bedroom apartments. They have all been designed to be economical and easily accessible to students. The post Economical Housing For Students Preserves Historical Facades, Merging The Old & The New first appeared on Yanko Design.

  • Nike Unveils 3D printed Air Max 1000 that reimagines Air Max 1 in red laceless silhouette
    www.yankodesign.com
Nike seems to be on a roll, innovating beyond the obvious territories. After its collaborative Monopoly Game Set with Hasbro, the Swoosh brand is now teaming up with German shoe company, Zellerfeld, to give its original Air Max a 3D printed makeover in a vibrant red laceless design.Nike Air Max 1 originally designed by Tinker Hatfield has always had a special place in our hearts for the incredible future-forward design. Easily the greatest sneaker, the Air Max is now a revolution, which has come a long way since its inception with continuous air technology innovations with every new release. This time its not the sole or regular manufacturing, in fact, its the entire thought of the shoe that will rock the show at ComplexCon 2024.Designer: NikeZellerfeld founded in 2015, is a shoe company that specializes in 3D-printing thoughtful designs. Nike collaborated with the German outfit to delve into Air Max legacy and bring out a 3D-printed re-imagination that would launch at the ComlexCon on November 16 and 17, 2024. The groundbreaking rendition of the iconic Air Max 1, the Nike Air Max 1000, showcases the evolution of air technology along with new manufacturing techniques. This combination of Air and 3D printing creates an engaging underfoot experience that according to the design team produces the same comfort and responsiveness of the original silhouette. At the foundation of this new creation of course is Nikes obsession with cushioning besides that Air band and the mudguard wave make apparent nuances that tag the 3D printed version to the original. The wavy lines forming the mudguard and the air unit in the heel do not make the Air Max 1000 much different, but the sneakers laceless design truly propels it into a new fan category delightfully pleasing in a bright red colorway. The blend of smooth and textured print in the upper half of the AM 1000, goes well with the single Swoosh banding and the carved outsole. There is no word on the price, but I believe, the sneaker is worth whatever it comes for!The post Nike Unveils 3D printed Air Max 1000 that reimagines Air Max 1 in red laceless silhouette first appeared on Yanko Design.
