• Nikes Olympic comeback plan is paying off so far
    www.fastcompany.com
The summer Olympics is turning out to be a rare win for Nike as the global sporting event has helped boost demand for the sportswear giants new launches and edge out competition, website searches from research firm Similarweb showed. In the opening week of the Olympics, from July 26 to August 1, Nike and Puma managed to increase visits to their direct-to-consumer sites, while Adidas, Hoka and On all saw their visits decline compared to the week before, according to Similarweb. The visits peaked on July 31 to 2 million, following U.S. gymnast Simone Biles clinching her seventh Olympic gold medal after the United States earned their third gold in the womens team event.Out of those visits to Nike.com, 86,900 included a sale, while Adidas had a total of 532,500 visits with only 3,600 likely converted into product purchases, the data showed. If the athletes and teams sponsored by Nike carry on winning, thats likely going to boost their popularity and therefore theyll probably still see those conversions remain strong through the rest of the Olympics, Similarwebs Senior Insights Analyst Daniel Reid said.Nike had said it was spending more on this Olympics than any previous games, as it hopes to revive sales and compete with upstart rivals. CFO Matthew Friend said in June that Nike was reinvesting nearly $1 billion in consumer-facing activities in fiscal 2025, which includes product launches and deepening its sports marketing portfolio through campaigns during the Paris Olympics. The worlds largest sportswear maker and official sponsor for the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic team, launched a slew of products ranging from Jordan 4 Retro SE shoes to an Olympic Electric Pack consisting of 55 shoes, including new designs of Alphafly 3 and Pegasus that have intrigued consumers. On the resale platform StockX, the Jordan 4 Retro SE Paris Olympics Wet Cement, which retails for $225, were traded over 8,373 times as of July end, making it the highest-selling Olympic product on its site.Still, Nikes performance so far this year has lagged brands such as Roger Federer-backed On, Deckers Outdoors Hoka and Adidas in the running, performance and casual shoe category with the sportswear giant struggling to bring innovative designs and some strategy missteps.(Nike is) still a struggling brand overall. But the Olympics, it definitely drives interest in these things Nike is the one thats really winning there, said Drew Haines, the merchandising director at StockX.Ananya Mariam Rajesh, Reuters

  • TCLs Ultra-Slim 1.1 Inch NXTFRAME Smart TVs with AI Art Generation and Built-in Art Gallery
    www.yankodesign.com
If you still happen to have an NFT collection, TCLs TV might just be the new way to display it.It was probably Samsung that came up with the idea of transforming your TV into an ambient art frame when not in use, and I have to admit, its quite a stellar idea. The television is great when youre watching something on it, but the minute you switch it off, it becomes an ugly black rectangle on your wall. Frame-inspired TVs are a great alternative, allowing you to turn your wall into home decor, and TCLs jumped onto that trend with its NXTFRAME range of smart TVs. Measuring a mere 1.1 inches thick, the NXTFRAME televisions sit virtually flush against your wall, pretty much like a piece of framed art.Designer: TCLRanging between 55 and 85 inches in size, the smart TVs blend right into your home seamlessly, with the QLED Pro screen mimicking the feeling of printed art really well thanks to its high contrast and clarity even in brightly lit rooms. The 4K TVs come with Google TV for watching all your streaming services, but the displays beauty lies in TCLs built-in curated art library as well as the ability to make and display AI-generated art. A gorgeous matte screen helps the art stand out well without any added glare from lights or nearby windows, and the TV even comes with wood-like veneers that attach onto the bezel, giving the NXTFRAME a bonafide outer frame. As gorgeously slick as the NXTFRAME looks, its performance specs are equally impressive. With a refresh rate of up to 144Hz, it promises smooth and fluid visuals, whether youre watching a high-action movie or playing the latest video games. The inclusion of Dolby Vision IQ ensures that the picture quality adapts to the lighting conditions in your room, offering the best possible image at all times. Additionally, the support for AMD FreeSync Premium makes it an excellent choice for gamers, reducing screen tearing and providing a more responsive gaming experience. Motion Rate 480 and MEMC motion smoothing technology further enhance the viewing experience by reducing motion blur and judder, making fast-moving scenes clear and crisp.Under the hood, the NXTFRAME runs on Google TV, offering seamless integration with various streaming services and smart home devices. It supports Chromecast and Apple AirPlay 2, making it easy to stream content from your devices. Voice control is also well catered for, with compatibility with Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, and Apple Home. For gamers, the TV comes equipped with Game Accelerator 240, Auto Game Mode, and AMD FreeSync Premium, ensuring an optimized gaming experience with minimal input lag and maximum visual clarity. The sound system is robust, featuring two built-in 20W speakers and support for advanced audio technologies like Dolby Atmos and DTS.The Pro version of the NXTFRAME takes the audio experience a notch higher by including a wireless 3.1.2 soundbar and subwoofer, developed in partnership with the renowned audio company Bang & Olufsen. This combination promises an immersive audio experience, enhancing everything from dialogue clarity to the rumble of on-screen explosions. The TV also boasts four HDMI ports, including one with eARC support, allowing for easy connection of multiple devices and ensuring that audio signals remain high quality.Pricing for the NXTFRAME series starts at $1,499.99 for the 55-inch model and goes up to $3,999.99 for the 85-inch version. The Pro versions, which include the enhanced audio system, start at $1,999.99 for the 55-inch model and reach $4,999.99 for the 85-inch model. These models are expected to be available in September 2024, along with accessories like the movable floor stand priced at $699.99 and matching table feet at $149.99. • Disney could pay another $5 billion for Comcasts Hulu stake. Heres why
    www.fastcompany.com
Walt Disney said on Wednesday it may have to pay up to $5 billion more to buy Comcasts minority stake in Hulu, if an appraiser were to agree with Comcasts assessment that the stake should be valued at more than $40 billion. Earlier this year, Disney and Comcast hired investment bank RBC Capital as the independent appraiser to resolve a dispute over how to value the 33% stake in the streaming platform, according to people familiar with the matter. Reuters was first to report in May that Disney and Comcast were seeking to hire an independent adviser. The two sides have entered into arbitration proceedings to resolve the dispute and a final decision is expected in fiscal 2025. Disney and Comcast signed an agreement for Hulu in 2019 with an option strike date of January 2024, after Disneys $71 billion takeover of Foxs assets, including its minority stake in Hulu. The deal gave Disney majority control over Hulu as it already owned a 33% stake. Comcast retained its stake at the time believing that its value would rise significantly by 2024. In November last year, Disney agreed to take control of Hulu and pay Comcast at least $8.6 billion for the remaining 33% stake, after Comcast triggered the deal as part of the 2019 agreement. Disney said on Wednesday if the independent advisers valuation is equal to or below the guaranteed floor value of $27.5 billion, it would not have to pay Comcast anything more than the $8.6 billion that it paid out last year. If RBCs appraisal is in line with Comcasts evaluation, Disney will have to pay Comcast $5 billion more. If it falls between the earlier evaluations by both sides, Disney would have to pay anywhere between $0 and about $5 billion.JPMorgan, Disneys adviser on this deal, valued Hulu at less than $27.5 billion, which is the floor valuation that the companies had set in their 2019 put-call agreement.Morgan Stanley, which is Comcasts adviser, valued Hulu at $40.8 billion. In regulatory filings last year, Disney and Comcast had said if the valuation reached by their banks were within 10% of each other, a deal will take place at a valuation that is the average of the two appraisals. Since that was more than 10% apart, Comcast and Disney picked RBC to carry out an independent appraisal.Anirban Sen and Aditya Soni, Reuters
