  • Abigail's Sketchbook :D
    realtimevfx.com
Hi all! Ive been lurking around the forum for a while and seeing some amazing stuff, but now Ive finally plucked up the courage to start my own sketchbook and post my progress as I grow my skills and understanding of real-time VFX. I have a degree in games art and design, but only in my final year did I decide Real-time VFX would be my niche so my skills are still beginner. Im currently learning through VFX Apprentice courses for the next year to see how far I get. Cant wait to grow with you guys! After a lot of tutorials, Im stepping out of my own (a bit) to test what Ive learned. So, Ive started a block-in version of the magical trails from Darin Aranda substance designer course on VFXA. Its not been as straight forward as I thought, but Im happy with todays progress. All of the movement is in the rotate around point module. to distribute the two particles evenly, I changed the rotation phase to return normalized Exec Index (thanks to CGHow for that) and unchecked normalized index included. Set rotation rate to above 1 to get them going. To get the orbs to fly in a up and down a bit, I went into the rotate around point module, made the x-axis into a vector and animated the z-axis with a sine-wave. I tried a lot of different things and this was the most straight forward in the end. However, there are a few things Id like some insight on. Firstly, the sine wave works, but when the system restarts its loop, the wave kind of restarts, as in theres a jitter when it restarts. In the level its fine but Im wondering if there is a simpler more seamless way to get them to move up and down.Second, I see this at the start of the system:Which makes me think the orbs spawn in the middle and quickly move out and the trail follows. It doesnt look very clean, so again Im wondering if theres a better way. Can I delay the trail spawning in by a bit so that this doesnt happen?Feedback welcome!

  • Canadian Centre for Architecture debuts Being There: Photography in Arthur Ericksons Early Travel Diaries
    www.archpaper.com
A new exhibition at the Canadian Centre for Architecture (CCA) in Montreal showcases photography, travel diaries, and sketches from the archives of Arthur Erickson, one of Canadas most renowned 20th century architects. Being There: Photography in Arthur Ericksons Early Travel Diaries was curated by David Covo, associate professor at McGill Universitys School of Architecture, and runs until March 16, 2025. Throughout his life, Erickson was a prolific traveler, a passion that was first ignited shortly after his undergraduate education at McGill University. Having been awarded a prestigious travel scholarship, the young architect visited the Middle East, North Africa, and Europe from 1950 to 1952, documenting canonical architectural sites along the way. His intention for the voyage: to catalogue the emergence of classical architecture.Later in his career, Erickson received a travel grant from the Canada Council for the Arts that allowed him to visit Japan, China, Cambodia, and Bali in 1961. According to a press release from the CCA, materials from this trip are central to the show, particularly a documented correspondence between Erickson and his mentor Gordon Weber. On a McGill travel scholarship, Erickson traversed the Mediterranean, tracing the emergence of classical architecture. (Arthur Erickson/ Emily Erickson McCullum and Christopher Erickson)Ericksons attention to architectural detail during his travels came to inform his own work back in British Columbia. Vernacular forms from across the globe appeared in his early residential work, a sign of the architects penchant for site-specific contextual design. To illustrate this attention to detail, the show pairs many of the photographs with site descriptions written by Erickson. For example, discussing the Kinkaku-Ji temple in Kyoto, Japan, Erickson wrote, what the origin of the lifting corner of the roof isI do not knowbut it is surprising to see how clearly it corresponds to the lift at the end of a pine branch, and how closely it harmonizes with the forest because of this.Ericksons photograph of the Kinkaku-Ji temple in Japan foregrounds surrounding pine trees, demonstrating how the roofs lifted corners reference nature. (Arthur Erickson/ Emily Erickson McCullum and Christopher Erickson)In other notes, the architects insights are more philosophical. In Bali in 1961 he wrote, I think that ones impression of beauty comes not from any single thing, such as the topography of the island or the physical grace of the people, but from the total interdependence of every aspect of culture. The opening of the CCAs exhibition corresponds with a recently premiered documentary about the architect, Arthur Erickson: Beauty Between the Lines, which screened at this years Architecture and Design Film Festival (ADFF). Ericksons renowned Museum of Anthropology at the University of British Columbia also recently reopened following a major renovation.

  • Port Authority unveils new elevated rail line for Newark Liberty International Airport, on the heels of a new vision for Terminal B
    www.archpaper.com
Major changes are underway at Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) as part of the EWR Vision Plan. Last month, the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey (PANYNJ) shared renderings by Arup and SOM of a new Terminal B. This came one year after Grimshaw Architects finished modernizing Terminal A. This month, PANYNJ shared new plans to build a 2.5-mile-long elevated rail structure, dotted by three new stations, that will replace the existing AirTrain Newark masstransitsystem that shuttles passengers between terminals. PANYNJ has selected Los AngelesbasedTutor Perini CorporationandO&G Industries, a local contractor, to design the line and its accompanying stations. Dattner Architects, Stantec, and Doppelmayr are also on the project team.SOMs vision for a new Terminal B calls for an undulating roof structure. (Courtesy PANYNJ)The three new terminal stations will have state-of-the-art people mover technology. (Courtesy PANYNJ)The new rail line by Dattner Architects will replace an existing one from 1996 that, according to PANYNJ, has become outdated and unable to accommodate growing air travel demand. The three new stops will service EWRs three terminals: A, B, and C.While its existing AirTrain system dates back to 1996, the airport itself first opened in 1928. Its terminals were built out in the 1970s. Aside from the gleaming new Terminal A finished in 2023, Terminals B and C havent had significant upgrades in about 50 years. The updated air train will feature state-of-the-art people mover technology. Murals of Tri-State region icons like Queen Latifah and Frank Sinatra are shown adorning the walls of stations. The new rail line will connect with a new Terminal B designed by Arup and SOM. (Courtesy PANYNJ)Newark Liberty International Airport had a record 49 million passengers in 2023, so the need to revamp its terminals and transit infrastructure is real, PANYNJ officials said. This plan aims to elevate the airport to world-renowned status, prioritizing the passenger experience, airport operations, and greater access and opportunities for the state, New Jersey State Senate Majority Leader M. Teresa Rui said in a statement.Redesigning Newark Liberty International Airport centers on improving the passenger experience. (Courtesy PANYNJ)By improving train accessibility for underserved neighborhoods and integrating local businesses into terminal upgrades, we are committed to ensuring that these enhancements are equitable and reflect the vibrant culture of our community, Rui continued. Looking ahead, PANYNJ noted that it has finished 80 percent of the procurement process necessary to build the new train system. Construction could start as early as next year.Passenger service is expected to be available on the new line by 2030.

  • Wilson Chapel Andover Newton Theological School // 2007
    buildingsofnewengland.com
The last building constructed on the former Andover Newton Theological School in Newton, Massachusetts, was Wilson Chapel, located at the edge of the campus. The building is a modern interpretation of the traditional New England meetinghouse, and was completed in 2007 from plans by Context Architecture. The limestone building is punctuated by a grid of square punched windows and raised panels with the primary facade dominated by a glass tower, resembling the more traditional steeple. To me, the building does an excellent job at respecting the basic forms of a New England chapel, while utilizing contemporary materials and design elements to distinguish it as a 21st century structure.
