WWW.POLYGON.COMInside the search for the WoW killer that never cameThe game industry is no stranger to boom-and-bust cycles, in which scores of opportunistic developers fall over themselves to release copycat competitors to the latest massive hit, and most, if not all, fail. Perhaps the biggest instance and certainly the most embarrassing for almost everyone concerned was the race to release the mythical WoW killer: a massively multiplayer online role-playing game that would unseat Blizzards global megahit, World of Warcraft, and earn its makers millions of dollars in monthly subscription revenue until the end of time.It turned out to be an industry-wide epic fail and I had a ringside seat to this unfortunate spectacle. My career in games journalism began in 2004, just a few months before WoW was released. My obsessive love of the game threatened to tank that career before it had really begun, but instead I turned it to my advantage, specializing in covering a genre of game that was too arcane and time-consuming for most staff writers and editors to get their heads around. I traveled to scores of preview events for MMO hopefuls that public relations reps would optimistically tout as World of Warcraft, but for soccer, or World of Warcraft, but for vehicular combat. In 2008, I was hired by Eurogamer as the editor of its short-lived MMO section lets not pretend that we in the press were immune to the same wrongheaded gold-rush thinking and discovered firsthand exactly why the whole enterprise was doomed to fail. One reason is that World of Warcraft especially during its 2004-to-2010 heyday was simply too good to beat. But another is that hit-chasing, not a great strategy at the best of times, is almost impossible to pull off in the world of social, online games. The hits garner intensely loyal, invested audiences who play them month in, month out, and who arent really looking for something else to move on to.Those audiences are hermetically sealed within their own fandoms and care much less about shiny graphics or other technical advancements, while the constantly updated games have plenty of room to innovate and evolve the genre within themselves. The time-honored tactic of just slap a big license (like Star Wars) on it is less effective in this sphere, too, because the appeal of famous characters and storylines doesnt necessarily apply the players are more invested in their communities.Yet the industry continues to make this critical error with online games. Just look at the spectacular crash and burn of Concord earlier this year, itself just the latest of countless attempts to elbow Overwatch off its hero-shooter throne. In the spirit of constructive learning, and only a little bit of schadenfreude, lets look back at some of the games that failed to put a dent in World of Warcrafts hegemony and the few that did.The failed WoW killersThe Lord of the Rings Online (2007): This entry is perhaps a little unfair, since various people had been trying to make a Middle-earth MMO based on Tolkiens works long before Blizzard had even thought of WoW. The original developer, an MMO specialist called Turbine, probably thought it was just making another niche online game before publisher WB Games got unduly excited about its potential. The game was fine, but clearly a generation behind WoW in terms of its design. People still play it, though!Age of Conan (2008): Oh dear. The first and most instructive case of post-WoW hubris came from Funcom, a Norwegian specialist that got way out of its depth trying to push cutting-edge graphics, gore, sex, and dynamic real-time swordfighting into an MMO based on Robert E. Howards lusty fantasy world. Publisher Eidos put all its chips down; I remember attending an absurd press event staged in Oslos 1952 Winter Olympic park, which had been transformed into a medieval setting with horse-riding barbarians and fireside feasting. (A PR rep I was with got very drunk and stole a sheepskin rug, roaring incoherently into the Scandinavian night while wearing it around his shoulders.) The game was a mess at launch, and tanked hard.Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning (2008): EAs big play made sense on paper; the Warhammer license is probably as close as you can legally get to the Warcraft setting, and developer Mythics Dark Age of Camelot was beloved by the MMO hardcore. The game was lavish and expensive but limited in design, too focused on massive player-versus-player combat whereas WoW excelled at embracing almost every possible play style. Warhammer Online was shut down in 2013.APB: All Points Bulletin (2010): A Grand Theft Auto-style massively multiplayer game boasting intense levels of player customization, and masterminded by GTAs creator himself, David Jones? What could go wrong? Everything! APB was stacked with ambitious features but notably lacked, you know, gameplay. Also, Jones company Realtime Worlds, which had previously made the excellent Crackdown for Xbox, was in far too deep. A disastrous launch was followed within a couple of months by the developer going bankrupt and APB getting shut down. Another company bought and relaunched it, but didnt succeed in putting an actual game in there.Rift (2011): The MMO gold rush wasnt just about games; entire companies sprang up, drawing huge investment on the promise of some revolutionary technology or other. Trion Worlds was one example that boasted fancy server-side tech that was supposed to take MMOs closer to the fully simulated cloud-gaming dream. Unfortunately, its flagship fantasy MMO Rift was very boring.Star Wars: The Old Republic (2011): Smarting from the failure of Warhammer Online, EA was nevertheless up for another crack at smashing WoW, armed with the Star Wars license, its star in-house developer BioWare, and an apparently limitless budget. The hype was off the charts, but BioWares expertise was in single-player games. Everybody bought it, played the story through, and moved on, which is not the idea. BioWare didnt give up, though, and steadily built out a proper massively multiplayer game around the story campaigns. After a successful free-to-play relaunch, The Old Republic still has an audience.Guild Wars 2 (2012): Guild Wars 2 is actually a fantastic game, easily the best on this list I feel bad including it. It has refined combat and employed several genre-defining ideas that were later copied by WoW, Destiny, and others. But the scope of this relatively streamlined game was not equal to the hopes publisher NCSoft loaded on it and the ever-expanding WoW presented a moving target that could never be caught.WildStar (2014): NCSoft, a big player in Korea, made its most determined attempt to crack the West with WildStar, a game by former Blizzard devs with a very Warcraft-y color palette and art style. It was cute, expensive, action-forward, and had some fun ideas, but it was also very obviously a trend-chasing mishmash with no reason to exist beyond trying to top WoW. NCSoft shut it down and closed developer Carbine in 2018.The game almost did kill WoWFinal Fantasy 14 (2013): The prize for perseverance goes to Square Enix, which simply didnt give up and which, importantly, had reasons other than competing with Blizzard to be making an MMO. Final Fantasy 11 had been a pre-WoW hit in 2002; the first attempt to follow it up with FF14 in 2010 was a disaster, but Square Enix bravely scrapped it and asked producer Naoki Yoshida for a complete do-over. It was a question of honor, if anything. Yoshidas reboot ruled, and Square Enix didnt falter when it didnt immediately do WoW numbers, but continued to invest. FF14 steadily got bigger and better, and it was ready and waiting when Blizzard stumbled through a succession of PR disasters and lackluster WoW expansions in the late 2010s and early 2020s. WoW streamers and players starting leaving for FF14 in droves, and Square Enixs game is, at last, the competitor that WoW has always deserved.0 Comments 0 Shares 2 Views

UXDESIGN.CCThe semantic interface palette is simpleA consistent and accurate Core Palette is not enough for a consistent and accurate interface. In my previous article Creating a consistent color palette for your interface, I discussed creating a consistent color palette. This palette includes all the colors to be used in your interface. Lets call it the CorePalette. However, a consistent and accurate Core Palette is not enough for a consistent and accurate interface. We need a layer of rules about how to use these colors in the interface: which specific color to use for primary and secondary text, for input borders, etc.Lets introduce the Semantic Layer. The Semantic Layer is a list of rules for how to use colors from the Core Palette.So..The Core Layer shows all the available colors, while the Semantic Layer defines how to usethem.Im sure that most of you have seen really complex semantic palettes. They specify color tokens for each design system component, such as button-background, button-text, button-icon, etc. I have also tried this approach before, but now I can say that it is excessive and tootricky.Such a system is difficult to build and even harder to use. It can be a third layer under the simple semantic layer if you really need this level of detail. However, dont proceed with this complexity unless you are certain that it is necessary. The simple semantic layer Im showing will work in most interfaces. There are 5 main groups of the semantictokens:Textcolors for titles, paragraphs, captions, links, labels, button titles andetcFillcolors for button containers, icons, checkboxes, toggles andetcStrokecolors for input borders, dividers, banners borders andetcLayercolors for page backgounds, popup backgrounds, overlays andetcEffectcolors for shadows and touch feedbacksAt Aloha, we decided to skip Strokes and Effects for now. For Strokes, we chose to use colors from the Fills palette to simplify our system. Later, Ill discuss the pros and cons of this decision. We dont need special colors for Effects because we use standard effects from the Android and iOS libraries.TokensIn each semantic palette, there are a few semantic tokens. For example: text-primary, text-secondary, text-brand-primary, and text-on-accent.In Figma, we have two separate files for the Core Palette and the Semantic Palette. We use variables to manage color tokens. Tokens from the Semantic Palette refer to tokens from the CorePalette.ThemesA very valuable benefit of using the Semantic Layer is interface theming. A well-organized Semantic Layer allows you to easily manage light and dark modes, as well as color themes. At Aloha, we have 5 color themes, each available in both light and darkmodes. For each semantic token there are associated colors in each color scheme and mode. At Aloha, we only redefine brand tokens, but if needed, the entire semantic palette can be redefined for eachmode.Figma variables make it simple to manage and use color modes. You can set up your palettes in different modes and switch themes for your interface with just oneclick.A few tips for a good darkmodeDont simple invert the colors light dark or dark light, think about each particular case. The dark theme should have more depth. Surfaces that are closer to you should belighter. In contrast to the light theme, separators and borders in the dark theme should be lighter than the background.FillFill colors are used forthebackgrounds of buttons, tags, banners, etc. Fill colors are not used for page backgrounds, bottom sheets, or popup backgrounds.fill oficonsfill of checkboxes, radio buttons, toggle switch andetcDont forget about elements on dark or colorful backgrounds. It is a very, very important token. Adding just one fill-on-accent token is enough to cover mostcases.TextObviously, Text colors are used for text. We use them for titles, paragraphs, links, labels, button titles andothers. But the colors seem very similar to Fill. Why do we need an additional semantic group? The thing is that texts are thiner then the icons or interface controls. Therefore they look lighter even when they have absolutely samecolor. If we want to maintain the ability to manage text colors separately and adjust them slightly, we need separate tokens forthem.LayerLayers are the simplest yet trickiest aspect. There are few tokens and only 23 colors, but the structure of these tokens is very important, especially in darkmode. We should imagine our interface in the 3D prospect and decide how many layers we shouldhave. At Aloha, we have 3 floors and 1 overlay. In light mode, the floors use just 2 colors, but in dark mode, the interface looksdeeper.StrokeIn the Stroke section, we have colors for element borders and dividers. You might need brand colors, positive and negative colors, as well as a couple of light greycolors.Yes, the Stroke palette looks very very similar to the Fillpalette.Join Fill andStroke? In most cases, you will find all the necessary colors for your strokes in the Fill palette. It seems redundant to create another palette with exactly the same colors. At Aloha we decided to use Fill palette for both: fills andstrokes. But sometimes, you might want the same color used in light mode to behave differently for fill and stroke in darkmode. So, on one hand, it is easier to use the same palette for fills and strokes. You dont have to think about which palette to apply. But from the other perspective, two palettes give you more flexibility and more clarity about how to use specificcolors.Static colorsWe have talked about semantic tokens, which can be used in different color themes. Each token has a specific function in the interface. But what if there are colors that are the same in both light and dark modes? Usually, these are shades of black andwhite. For these colors, we should have a separate palette. Lets call it the Static Palette. Add colors that are not affected by the color mode. Each static token also refers to colors from the CorePalette. To summarize Having a streamlined Semantic Layer allows you to expand the color palette for your interface as much as you like while maintaining a clear and accurate structure.Creating a consistent color palette for your interfaceCreating accessible color palettes for humaneyesA Guide to Variables inFigmaDark Mode UI ConversionThe semantic interface palette is simple was originally published in UX Collective on Medium, where people are continuing the conversation by highlighting and responding to this story.0 Comments 0 Shares 2 Views

LIFEHACKER.COMThe Best Beauty and Self-Care Gifts on Sale During Black FridaySignificant chunks of my time and money are spent on self care, which means that if I see a new product that promises to make me look or feel nicerespecially on a shopping holiday like Black FridayI'm likely to add it directly to my cart. I have tested some true lemons, but I've also found a lot of success, which means I'm qualified to tell you what I think the self-care lovers in your life will really appreciate this holiday season. See, the cool thing about living in the future is that the act of taking care of yourself is getting more and more technologically advanced, so there are plenty of opportunities to outsource beautifying and relaxing to exciting gadgets that, in some cases, actually deliver the goods. You don't have to get your mom fuzzy socks or your partner another candle anymore; you can get them some things that are high-tech and cool instead. I went through my orders and picked out all my faves that are on sale during Black Friday. The best Black Friday deals on relaxing techI take my relaxation and sleep very seriously. Most of what I use to accomplish my perfect evenings isn't particularly tech-y, like candles and lotions, but that doesn't mean I wind down entirely like a delicate Victorian woman. First, I recommend a smart oil diffuser. Candles can be dangerous and, since I got one of these for my mom years ago, I've found that the scent permeates a lot wider and lasts a lot longer than what I get from a candle, anyway. As far as gifts go, I recommend this one because it worked well for me; my mom loves it.There are two bonuses you'll get with the model I found that's on sale for Black Friday: you can set it to emanate any color light you want; and it's compatible with an app and your smart home devices, like Amazon Echo. Every night, my mom just says, "Alexa, turn on my diffuser," which I think is top-tier relaxing. Imagine you're a queen getting ready for bed. Why should you turn on the diffuser? For just $31.44, you'll never have to again. ASAKUKU Smart Wifi Essential Oil Diffuser $31.44 at Amazon $36.99 Save $5.55 Get Deal Get Deal $31.44 at Amazon $36.99 Save $5.55 Next up, I've been very into these heated eye masks lately. There are a few varietieslike ones that you microwave or electronic onesbut these are similar to hand warmers in that they just heat up with no extra fussing required. I'm not headache prone, so I don't use them for their intended purpose, but if someone you love does get bad headaches, this is a really caring present. Even without any pain to manage, I still find that they relax me and stop me from holding tension in my faceplus they block out light, which I appreciate. A 16-pack is just under $12 for the shopping holiday. In the past few weeks, I've also really enjoyed this vibrating, heated belt. It's supposed to be for cramps, mostly, so it's even FSA eligible, but that doesn't mean you can only buy it for someone who suffers from them: I've found it relaxing just to wear to warm up around the house. The vibration is nice, too, and I've been spinning it around and using it on my lower back at night. Whether your loved one has a tendency to be chilly or deals with any kind of pain in their abdomen, this will be a welcome gift. It really feels pampering and it's perfect for these colder months. The best Black Friday deals on beauty techTo me, primping is fun and part of my general self-care routine, so I do consider beauty tech to qualify as something that relaxes me and puts me in a good mood. It only does that if it works, thoughotherwise it puts me in a bad mood, which is not what you want to happen to your gift recipient. One thing that absolutely works? The Dyson Airwrap, the styling tool that takes your hair from wet to curly. It's on sale for $249.99 right now. Dyson Airwrap Refurbished Multi-Styler $249.99 at Walmart $599.99 Save $350.00 Get Deal Get Deal $249.99 at Walmart $599.99 Save $350.00 I get that that's still a little pricey and also requires a learning curve and for your recipient to wash their hair for it to work. You can save even more money and opt for a simpler tool, like a thermal brush. I have one like this, which is marked down to $39.97 for Black Friday. It doesn't blow out air like an Airwrap or a blow-drying brush. Rather, it heats up and you use the bristles to secure and guide your hair for a quick, easy blowout lookperfect for the style icon on the go. I started using mine like a maniac on non-wash days after seeing them all over TikTok, where influencers (correctly) praise the ionic technology for preventing any frizz. Finally, I will try any and every product designed to enhance my face, whatever that happens to mean at any given time. This weekend, I tried to perm and dye my own eyelashes and failed terribly, but I also played around with a strange electronic head strap that worked similarly to a TENS machine to contract the muscles around my jaw. I have no idea if it did anything, but I had a blast trying it out. I'm getting some for my friends this holiday season because they expressed some interest after I sent them videos of my face twitching, but I'm still not sure if it works. One thing that has worked, however, is a microcurrent device. Right now I'm using the Myolift QT Plus, which isn't marked down, but gave me similar results to the classic NuFace, which is. A Mini is $154 instead of $220 for Black Friday, which is a solid deal. These machines deliver little electric currents and produce temporary (but noticeable) firming and lifting of the face. I've been using microcurrent devices for four years and notice that my results fade when I take a break, but even the process of running them over my face (the way you would with a gua sha tool) is relaxing, so I do recommend them. I'll add that though it's not on sale, the Myolift QT is just $16 more and features app connectivity that I consider really valuable. (The app analyzes my face periodically to check on progress and features guided videos so I feel like I know what I'm doing a little better than when I wing it with the NuFace.) Obviously, tread with caution here. I would love to get an expensive facial tool from a loved one, but that's because I openly yap about all the ridiculous beauty tools I try. If I were more self-conscious or less open with them, I can see how a gift like that might be offensive. It's a great gift as long as you're sure the other person wants it. LIFEHACKER.COMMy Favorite Home Storage Items on Sale for Black FridayWith this website as my pulpit, I preach about the value of an organized home and what, exactly, is required to achieve one. It typically boils down to using a rigid organizing system and investing in quality storage containers. I've said it before and I'll say it again: Store similar items together and have a designated space for everything. To do that, you need a variety of storage options, like boxes, containers, different kinds of shelves, and even hidden storage. Some of my favorites are on sale for Black Friday, so now is as good a time as any to whip your home into shapefor cheap! My favorite storage lamp is on sale for $30First up is a storage lamp I've actually written about before because it was also on sale during Amazon's October Prime Day sale a few weeks ago. If you missed it then, don't miss it now. It's a simple, bright lamp that has three shelves in its base and, since I picked it up after writing about it before, I'm back to say I've fallen in love with it. The more small shelves you can fit into your home, the better, as they allow you to designate hyper-specific spaces for your categorized items. The second shelf on my lamp, for instance, is dedicated entirely to lotions and creams, while I have hung my gaming headset and Playstation controller from the side. I actually use the top shelf when I take pictures of items I want to sell online, since it creates a sharp backdrop and has the added benefit of overhead lighting. It's marked down to $29.96 from $49.99, so get it while you can. (I got the light pink color, but you do you.) Simple Designs Pink Storage Shelf $29.96 at Amazon $49.99 Save $20.03 Get Deal Get Deal $29.96 at Amazon $49.99 Save $20.03 Get a storage mirrorAnother household item I evangelize about is the storage mirror. In general, I'm a big advocate for storage furniture because, by its nature, it's dual-purpose. Not everything you organize and store needs to be visible, so having hidden spots to keep everything in order while getting another benefit out of the unit is a smart way to keep a smaller space clean. I love my storage mirror because there are compartments inside designed for rings, bracelets, necklaces, and miscellany, but when it's closed, it just looks like a classy, functional addition to my wall. Search "storage mirror" on Amazon to see all the great options for Black Friday that range from about $80 to $200, but here's my pick of the one that gives you the most bang for your (relatively few) bucks this time around: Songmics Storage Mirror $83.75 at Amazon $105.99 Save $22.24 Get Deal Get Deal $83.75 at Amazon $105.99 Save $22.24 And don't forget shelves this Black FridayI believe you can never have too many shelves and, of all the options out there, cube shelving is my favorite. Shelving that is already divided up so you can specify categories for each section takes some of the work out of organizing for you. A simple-yet-spacious unit with 16 cubes is $35.99 right now. They're easy to build and, when necessary, disassemble, and I use these all over my home, from my closets to my kitchen. WWW.ENGADGET.COMPeacocks Black Friday deal grants a full year of access for $20Fans of random Love Island spinoffs rejoice! Peacock just dropped a doozy of a Black Friday deal. Customers can now sign up for a year-long subscription to the streaming service for just $20 or six months at $2 per month. Thats a discount of 75 percent, no matter which option is selected. The promotion is live right now, but ends on December 2. Peacock doesnt have the name recognition of Netflix or Hulu, but its still home to plenty of good shows and movies. Theres a reason, after all, that the platform made our list of the best streaming services. Peacock isnt just home to the aforementioned Love Island and other reality shows about love not set on islands. The streamer also airs some top-notch content like the AI-centric Mrs. Davis and the surprisingly-decent video game adaptation Twisted Metal. A Peacock subscription also allows access to SyFy shows like the underrated The Ark. Other worthwhile programs include Hysteria!, We Are Lady Parts and Killing It. There are a few little caveats. First, this subscription is the one with ads. Also, the offer is only available to new subscribers who are not currently paying for Peacock Premium or Premium Plus. Finally, its only available directly from Peacock, and not from third-party billers like Apple or Amazon.
