Buy now, pay later plans are becoming more popular. Experts are concerned
More shoppers than ever are on track to use buy now, pay later plans this holiday season, as the ability to spread out payments looks attractive at a time when Americans still feel the lingering effect of inflation and already have record-high credit card debt. The data firm Adobe Analytics predicts shoppers will spend 11.4% more this holiday season using buy now, pay later than they did a year ago. The company forecasts shoppers will purchase $18.5 billion worth of goods using the third-party services for the period November 1 to December 31, with $993 million worth of purchases on Cyber Monday alone.Buy now, pay later can be particularly appealing to consumers who have low credit scores or no credit history, such as younger shoppers, because most of the companies providing the service run only soft credit checks and dont report the loans and payment histories to the credit bureaus, unlike credit card companies. This holiday season, buy now, pay later users can also feel more confident if a transaction goes awry. In May, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau said buy now, pay later companies must adhere to other regulations that govern traditional credit, such as providing ways to demand refunds and dispute transactions. To use a buy now, pay later plan, consumers typically sign up with bank account information or a debit or credit card, and agree to pay for purchases in monthly installments, typically over eight weeks or more. The loans are marketed as requiring no or low interest, or only conditional fees, such as for late payment. Klarna, Afterpay, and Affirm are three of the biggest buy now, pay later companies. But consumer advocates warn that shoppers who sign up for the payment plans using a credit card can be hit with more interest and fees. Thats because individuals open themselves up to interest on the credit card payment, if its carried month to month, on top of any late fees, interest, or penalties from the buy now, pay later loan itself. Experts advise against using a credit card to pay for these plans for this reason.Consumer watchdogs also say the plans lead consumers to overextend themselves because, for example, not paying full price up front leaves, in the shoppers mind at least, more money for smaller purchases. They also caution consumers to keep careful track of using multiple buy now, pay later services, as the automatic payments can add up, and there is no central reporting, such as with a credit card statement.Buy now, pay later can be an innovative tool for purchases youre going to make anyway, said Mark Elliot, chief customer officer at financial services company LendingClub. The challenge is that it does fuel overspending. For merchants, thats part of the appeal. Retailers have found that customers are more likely to have bigger cart sizes or to convert from browsing to checking out when buy now, pay later is offered. One report from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York cited research that found customers spend 20% more when buy now, pay later is available. The reality is that the increased cost-of-living and inflation have put more people in a situation where theyre already relying on revolving credit, Elliot said. The psychographics of buy now, pay later may be differentpeople dont think of it as debtbut it is.If a consumer misses a payment, they can face fees, interest, or the possibility of being locked out of using the services in the future.Emily Childers, consumer financial expert for personal-finance technology company Credit Karma, said that internal data shows member credit card balances are up more than 50% for Gen Z and millennial members since March 2022, when the Fed started raising interest rates.Young people are entering this holiday season already in the red, she said. And, based on what were seeing in the data, theyre continuing to bury their heads in the sand and spend.By Cora Lewis, Associated PressThe Associated Press receives support from Charles Schwab Foundation for educational and explanatory reporting to improve financial literacy. This tiny design tweak made YouTube a more palatable place for women creators
It doesnt take a genius to know that its hard to be a woman on the internet. From the sexism that mirrors womens offline experiences to the objectification thats part and parcel of being online, the environment for women is challenging at best. But a new study shows that even small tweaks can make the web a more civil place for women content creators. A team led by University of Zurich postdoc Marita Freimane studied the impact of removing the public display of dislikes on YouTube videos, discovering that when they were hidden from public view, women received less negative feedback. The result? They produced 8.4% more videos, and saw demand for their content rise by 15.5%.The findings suggest that hatred against women is driven in some way by tribal pile-ons, rather than actual dislike of the content they produceor, indeed, their very existence. Before the YouTube policy change, introduced in November 2021, women YouTube creators saw 43% more dislikes on their videos than their male counterparts, according to the videos analyzed by Freimane. There is a stark difference in the number of dislikes that the content by female content creators gets compared to the content by male content creators, she says, noting, however, that when the scale of how much users disliked any video was hidden, the animus toward womens content dissipated. In fact, women creators saw a 57% drop in negative feedback on their videos as a result.Freimane believes that tiny tweak totally nullified the gender gap in video perception, noting that she saw the weaponizing of video dislikes as a method trolls use to assail creators. Dislike attacks are a form of harassment, where peopleseeing how many other people dislike a videoalso choose to dislike it, she says. They coordinate, using this dislike count as a coordination device. The findings have implications beyond YouTube. This paper essentially shows how platform affordances and platform policies can shape behavior, says Carolina Are, a researcher at the Centre for Digital Citizens at Northumbria University. Are points out that tools such as likes and dislikes can often be deployed by platforms for a positive reasonfor instance to let users know which videos are and are not worth their timebut can quickly be misused. [The tools] were probably originally born to teach the platform what people like and dont like, and to help users curate a better online experience, says Are. But they can definitely be weaponized against creators, particularly if theyre from marginalized demographics. The policy change is important because it encourages female creators to produce more content. Freimanes analysis suggests the average woman produced an extra video every two months as a result of the change, which could net the average woman creator an extra $3,100 in YouTube revenue per month.

Underground cisterns inform interior of Hong Kong's Artifact Bar
The interior of this subterranean speakeasy in downtown Hong Kong was designed by local studio NCDA to echo underground water reservoirs, with lighting by LightOrigin Studio to emphasise its "ethereal ambience".Artifact Bar is situated in the basement of BaseHall 02, a food court in the city's Central district. Nelson Chow's studio NCDA was responsible for the interior, while LightOrigin Studio took charge of the lighting.Guests enter Artifact Bar (top image) via a hidden entrance (above)The project, which is shortlisted for architectural lighting design of the year at the 2024 Dezeen Awards, references the arches and vaults of subterranean cisterns, as well as sci-fi spaceships and brutalist architecture. The interior is designed to make the most of a basement space with a restricted ceiling height and no natural illumination. One of the key features is a glowing disc above the bar intended to evoke an artificial sunset.A glowing disc above the bar evokes an artificial sunset"The ideology of the paradoxical presence of sunlight in an underground space, juxtaposed with the dimly lit surroundings, imparts a sense of surrealism," suggested LightOrigin Studio."By fusing architectural mastery and creative lighting design, the bar offers an extraordinary and ethereal experience."Fibreglass was used to form dramatic arches and horizontal beamsGuests enter Artifact Bar through a hidden door tucked away within the food court. Circular windows resembling industrial pipes provide glimpses of a digital light artwork, which sets the scene for the rest of the interior.A passageway leading towards the bar features dim and subdued lighting that evokes "a clandestine abandoned industrial landscape", according to LightOrigin Studio.Bespoke rotating lights resembling surveillance cameras add another futuristic detail to the corridor, which is lined with three-dimensional acoustic tiles that help to filter out noise from the food hall.Read: Rockwell Group creates "the cathedral of fried chicken" for New York restaurantIn the main bar, NCDA used fibreglass to create organic shapes including curved arches and sculptural rib-like elements, intended to recall the construction of subterranean cisterns.A mirrored wall and ceiling create the illusion of a much larger space, accentuated by the repetition of the horizontal fibreglass beams and strategically placed lights that provide soft, indirect illumination."Inspired by interior design's theme of rhythmic patterns of underground cisterns, our lighting inspiration is drawn from the cisterns' tranquil yet theatrical lighting atmosphere and ethereal ambience," LightOrigin Studio said. The fibreglass elements are emphasised by indirect lightingThe arches curve down from the ceiling to envelop the seating booths, each featuring a table light with a shade that directs light downwards to enhance the intimate feel, while soft linear lighting under the seats creates a dramatic runway effect. Most of the lighting fixtures were incorporated into architectural elements or joinery due to the limited space available above the false ceiling.A circular skylight above the serving area provides a captivating centrepiece that is carefully programmed to provide the necessary brightness without discomforting customers. The absence of direct light creates a moody atmosphere inside Artifact BarThe indirect lighting also highlights the various textured surfaces and contributes to a relaxed, comfortable atmosphere in the main bar and a private room.Other projects that have been shortlisted in the architectural lighting category of the 2024 Dezeen Awards include a Korean fried chicken restaurant in New York City featuring illuminated arches with rippled glass surfaces that resemble bubbling oil in a deep-fat fryer. The photography is by Common Studio. The post Underground cisterns inform interior of Hong Kong's Artifact Bar appeared first on Dezeen.

Clever Design for a Soft Exoskeleton that Eases Walking
Great news for aging populations and folks with mobility issues: Lower-body exoskeletons are having a moment, with multiple designs in development. Hyundai's H-MEX is designed to allow paraplegics to walk: Its sister product, the X-ble MEX, is for rehabilitating those who could previously walk but have suffered an injury: KAIST's WalkOn Suit F1 walks itself over to wheelchair users, and essentially installs itself on the wearer's body:Startup Skip's MO/GO are essentially powered pants, designed to make it easier for those who can walk, but have difficulty, to ascend or descend hills or stairs: All of those designs require some level of fitment to the user. But researchers at Germany's Technical University of Munich (TUM) have developed an innovative soft exoskeleton that can be applied over one's clothes. It consists of a harness and waist belt that can be worn like a hiking backpack. The user then wraps a textile harness around each thigh: These two sensors are attached to the thigh wraps. Here you can see the small motors on the back of the harness. These motors are connected to thin cables that attach to the front of the leg wraps. So the way it works is, the user begins to walk, and the sensors precisely measure one's gait. Then you can turn the motors on and have them provide a power assist. They do this by tensioning each cable the appropriate amount, essentially pulling your leg forward. The system is designed for people who have difficulty walking, but do not yet require a rollator/walker.[The] system is especially useful for people who are somewhat frail but do not yet need a rollator. [Additionally], older people as well as those weakened by illness, for example with a weak heart or lung disease, [are] a target group for development. "Walking helps them to improve their metabolism, which in turn may have a positive effect on their illness," says TUM Professor Lorenzio Masia. The fact that users can be out and about for longer makes them more mobile and independent overall. This in turn can have a positive impact on their quality of life."WalkOn looks more like clothing and is no bigger than a small rucksack overall," says doctoral student Enrica Tricomi, who has gradually developed the system into its present form over the past four years. Here's Tricomi demonstrating the system:Prof Lorenzo Masia is convinced that in the future, a modular system will be created that users can put together themselves: "In a few years, you will buy a pair of shorts, attach a motor to them and plug in two cables. The system will then be ready to take you into the mountains."

Incredible High-Rise Building In Tirana Splits Into Two Impressive Towers
OODA recently unveiled the Hora Verticale in Tirana, Albania, and they are back with another banger Ndarja. Ndarja is a square, high-rise building that will be located in central Tirana. It measures around 355,000 sq ft and will span over 22 floors. The word Ndarja roughly translates to split or separation in Albanian, which does the building justice, since it will be pulled apart to create two visually intriguing towers. One tower will accommodate office spaces on the lower floors and luxurious residences on the upper floors. The second tower will contain a retail space downstairs and a hotel on the upper stories.Designer: OODAThe exterior is quite fascinating, and it will be covered with different plants and trees. The vegetation selected will be tough enough to handle the wind and sunlight while offering shade to the residents. The exterior will also include perforated metal sheeting to regulate the sunlight. The ground level will host a square with a reflective pool and more greenery. This space will be integrated between both towers.A transparent water mirror serves as a portal at its core, drawing natural light underground and linking the exterior to the interior, said OODA. This open area integrates the greenery from the surrounding streets, the square, and the balcony gardens, creating a pleasant microclimate for the neighborhood. The square, no longer just a passageway, becomes a true urban oasis. The facade is earthy-toned, allowing the structure to blend seamlessly with the city. The metal sheets reflect the balconies into the city, thereby mirroring the urban environment and creating an interaction that binds the inside and the surroundings. This forms a harmonious connection between the interior environment and the urban environment. The incredible project is currently in the licensing phase, and Ndarja is expected to be constructed in 2029. This impressive project is a part of a large construction effort in Tirana which includes multiple other impressive buildings such as the Bond Tower and Klan TV HQ by OODA, and other structures by BIG and MVRDV.The post Incredible High-Rise Building In Tirana Splits Into Two Impressive Towers first appeared on Yanko Design.
