WWW.FASTCOMPANY.COMMore best-selling books on Trump may be on the horizonAs she anticipates her estranged uncles return to the White House, Mary Trump isnt expecting any future book to catch on like such first-term tell-alls as Michael Wolffs million-selling Fire and Fury or her own blockbuster, Too Much and Never Enough. What else is there to learn? she says. And for people who dont know, the books have been written. Its all really out in the open now.For publishers, Donald Trumps presidential years were a time of extraordinary sales in political books, helped in part by Trumps legal threats and angered tweets. According to Circana, which tracks around 85% of the hardcover and paperback market, the genres sales nearly doubled from 2015 to 2020, from around 5 million copies to around 10 million.Besides books by Wolff and Trump, other bestsellers included former FBI Director James Comeys A Higher Loyalty, former national security adviser John Boltons The Room Where It Happened and Bob Woodwards Fear. Meanwhile, sales for dystopian fiction also jumped, led by Margaret Atwoods A Handmaids Tale, which was adapted into an award-winning Hulu series. But interest has dropped back to 2015 levels since Trump left office, according to Circana, and publishers doubt it will again peak so highly. Readers not only showed little interest in books by or about President Joe Biden and his family they even seemed less excited about Trump-related releases. Mary Trumps Who Could Ever Love You and Woodwards War were both popular this fall, but neither has matched the sales of their books written during the first Trump administration.Weve been there many times, with all those books, HarperCollins publisher Jonathan Burnham says of the various Trump tell-alls. He added that he still sees a market for at least some Trump books perhaps analyzing the recent election because theres a general, serious smart audience, not politically aligned in a hard way, one that would welcome an intelligent voice. Its like the reboot of any hit TV show, says Eric Nelson, publisher and vice president of Broadside Books, a conservative imprint of HarperCollins thats released books by Jared Kushner, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and Trump Cabinet nominees Pete Hegseth and Sen. Marco Rubio. Youre not hoping for ratings like last time, just better ratings than the boring show its replacing. In the days following Trumps victory, The Handmaids Tale and George Orwells 1984 returned to bestseller lists, along with more contemporary works such as Timothy Snyders On Tyranny, a 2017 bestseller that expanded upon a Facebook post Snyder wrote soon after Trump defeated Hillary Clinton. Books appealing to pro-Trump readers also surged, including those written by Cabinet picks Robert F. Kennedy Jr.s The Real Anthony Fauci and Hegseths The War on Warriors and Vice President-elect JD Vances Hillbilly Elegy, his 2016 memoir thats sold hundreds of thousands of copies since Trump selected him as his running mate.First lady Melania Trumps memoir, Melania, came out in October and has been high on Amazon.com bestseller lists for weeks, even as critics found it contained little newsworthy information. According to Circana, it has sold more than 200,000 copies, a figure that does not include books sold directly through her website. The Melania book has done extraordinarily well, better than we thought, says Barnes & Noble CEO James Daunt. After Election Day, we sold everything we had of it.Conservative books have sold steadily over the years, and several publishers most recently Hachette Book Group have imprints dedicated to those readers. Publishers expect at least some critical books to reach bestseller lists if only because of the tradition of the publishing market favoring the party out of power. But the nature of what those books would look like is uncertain. Perhaps a onetime insider will have a falling out with Trump and write a memoir, like Bolton or former Trump attorney Michael Cohen, or maybe some of his planned initiatives, whether mass deportation or the prosecution of his political foes, will lead to investigative works.A new Fire and Fury is doubtful, with the originally only possible because Wolff enjoyed extraordinary access, spending months around Trump and his White House staff. Members of the president-elects current team have already issued a statement saying they have refused to speak with Wolff, calling the author a known peddler of fake news who routinely concocts situations, conversations, and conclusions that never happened.A publicist for Wolff said he was declining comment.Woodward, who interviewed Trump at length for the 2020 bestseller Rage, told The Associated Press that he had written so much about Trump and other presidents that he wasnt sure what hed take on next. He doesnt rule out another Trump book, but that will depend in part on the president-elect, how out of control he gets, Woodward said, and how far he is able to go.He wants to be the imperial president, where he gets to decide everything and no ones going to get in his way, Woodward said. Hes run into some brick walls in the past and there may be more brick walls. I dont know what will happen. Ill be watching and doing some reporting, but Im still undecided.5 best-selling Trump-related books, per CircanaToo Much and Never Enough, by Mary Trump: 1,248,212 copiesFire and Fury, by Michael Wolff: 936,116 copiesFear, by Bob Woodward: 872,014 copiesThe Room Where It Happened, by John Bolton: 676,010 copiesRage, by Bob Woodward: 549,685 copiesThese figures represent total sales provided by Circana, which tracks about 85% of the print market and does not include e-book or audiobook sales.Hillel Italie, Associated Press national writer0 Reacties 0 aandelen 11 Views

WWW.FASTCOMPANY.COMSome small business owners are relieved after an overtime-pay rule was blockedSmall business owners have had a mostly positive reaction to a judges decision to strike down an overtime rule that would have qualified more workers for overtime pay.On Nov. 15, a federal judge in Texas blocked a new rule from the Biden administration that would have expanded access to overtime pay to millions more salaried workers across the U.S. Nearly all hourly workers in the U.S. are entitled to overtime pay after 40 hours a week. But many salaried workers are exempt from that requirement unless they earn below a certain level. The now-scuttled rule would have marked the biggest increase to that cap in decades. As of July 1, employers were required to pay overtime to staffers who make $43,888 a year in certain executive, administrative and professional roles and that would have risen to $58,656 a year as of Jan. 1. But now the previous threshold of $35,568 which was set in 2019 under the Trump administration is back in effect. The judge said the department could not prioritize employee wages over job duties when determining eligibility.Guillaume Drew, founder of Or & Zon, a New York company that sells sustainable home goods online with 12 staffers, said overturning the rule helps him keep labor costs and prices of goods down, particularly for future employees, since none of his current staffers would have been affected. But he said its still important employees are paid fairly for their time and effort. Because the ruling was overturned, hell probably offer employees incentives like spa days and letting them work from home rather than overtime pay.Companies need to find an equilibrium between being financially viable and caring about employees, he said.Sheldon Sutherland, owner of Epoxy Werx, a San Diego-based business with 12 employees specializing in epoxy flooring, said the ruling is positive for his company. As a small business, managing labor costs is critical, and the proposed change would have increased expenses significantly, he said. The decision allows us to maintain current pay structures, ensuring financial stability while continuing to offer competitive wages.Small business organizations also applauded the measure.Although blocking any increase to the threshold fails to take into account inflation, the Department of Labor tried to do too much too fast resulting in sticker shock for small businesses that are still recovering from the pandemic, said Small Business Majority Founder & CEO John Arensmeyer. More measured and predictable increases are in order.Small Business & Entrepreneurship Council president & CEO Karen Kerrigan added that the ruling will help struggling small business owners. It will allow employers to align their compensation approach with the needs and flexibility of the individual worker and marketplace, she said. Small business owners and their workers are both better served by the courts ruling. Not everyone thought the move was a good one for small businesses, however. Stephanie Penn, owner of Tee & Honey, an online t-shirt boutique based in Southfield, Michigan, said fair pay, including overtime, is good for morale and leads to better productivity. Two of her employees were affected by the July 1 ruling and one wouldve been affected if the higher cap went into effect on Jan. 1.From a business perspective, having clearer guidelines around overtime pay also helps to avoid potential disputes or misunderstandings about compensation, she said. By striking down the rule, it places a heavier burden on businesses like mine, which strive to do right by their employees, while also leaving room for inequities that could harm both morale and retention.Mae Anderson, Associated Press business writer0 Reacties 0 aandelen 11 Views

WWW.DEZEEN.COMCooper Hewitt triennial explores cultural and historic aspects of the homeDesigners including Mona Chalabi and Black Artists + Designers Guild have created installations focusing on the design of the home for the Making Home exhibition at the Cooper Hewitt Design Museum.Presented throughout the New York City institution the former mansion of 19th-century industrialist Andrew Carnegie the Making Home Smithsonian Design Triennial exhibition looked at the home as a framework incorporating different cultural and environmental contexts.Above: Cooper Hewitt Design Museum design triennial focused on the home. Top image: The Underground Library was one of the exhibitsCooper Hewitt's seventh triennial exhibition, Making Home was developed by curator of contemporary design Alexandra Cunningham Cameron in partnership with associate curator of Latino design Christina L De Len and Michelle Joan Wilkinson, supervisory museum curator at the National Museum of African American History and Culture."The theme originated as a desire to use an extremely relatable topic home as a lens for exploring design in its most expansive terms," Cunningham Cameron said. "The exhibition covers a range of work from product design to medical systems to preservation to spiritual practices."Over 25 projects and installations were on show in the former mansion of Andrew Carnegie"The designers and artists in the show developed their commissions by considering design in active terms, as an iterative process rather than a finite solution," she added. Many of the projects on view demonstrate how design adapts over time in response to historical and cultural shifts as well as innovation, imagination and need. The exhibition was split into three sections distributed throughout the entire museumThe exhibition was broken down into three sections including Going Home, Seeking Home and Building Home. The Going Home portion of the exhibit displayed projects that reveal how people are shaped by domestic space.Hugh Hayden's Living Room, Orlean, Virginia piece reconstituted the home of bass-baritone Davne Tines and placed it on a rocking plinth to comment on the tension between conformity and precarity currently being experienced throughout the United States. The first section showcased how people are shaped by domestic spaceSeveral of the projects responded to the immediate context of the historical mansion. With the Underground Library: An Archive of our Truth project, design collective Black Artists + Designers Guild re-stocked its library with books and contemporary furniture designs that presented a comprehensive overview of Black history and culture.Liam Lee and Tommy Mishima's Game Room installation recontextualized Carnegie's former study with reinterpreted office furniture and infographics mapping his influence. The second section of the exhibition challenges conventions of what is considered a homeThe visual identity of Making Home was developed by Office Ben Ganz, with exhibition design byarchitecture firm Johnston Marklee. The studio drew inspiration from the location by reinterpreting decorative elements from the late 19th century and re-introducing them as graphic components.Read: Maria Nicanor appointed director of New York City's Cooper Hewitt museum"Each of the artists, architects and designers we chose to commission shared proposals for their installations and we worked very closely with them as they developed over the course of nearly two years," De Len said."As the curators, we did not define home but instead invited everyone to explore ideas of home through their own point of view, which led to a range of ideas about what it constitutes."Curators let the participants explore their own ideas of homeThe Seeking Home section incorporated projects that address how various contexts and situations challenge the convention of what is often codified as home.Through her SITU Research initiative, data journalist Mona Chalabi rendered the homes of three individuals destroyed by US-manufactured weapons used during airstrikes in Iraq, Syria and Palestine.Chalabi's Patterns of Life project incorporated infographics and building maquettes of the homes in question with paper cutouts of furnishings attached to back-lit semi-translucent scrims, suggesting that they no longer exist. The installations push the boundaries of the definition of home, incorporating issues such as social justice and cultural heritageSofa Gallis Muriente and Natalia Lassalle-Morillo's The Unruly Subject installation staged like a storage facility by theatre maker Carlos Soto placed Indigenous artefacts found in Puerto Rico in the late 19th-century next to works by contemporary Puerto Rican talents. Also on show was artist Heather Dewey-Hagborg's work Is a Biobank a Home? Displayed like a mock laboratory, it askedvisitors to ponder the question asked by its name. Some designers integrated their work directly into the surrounding former mansionThe Building Home section, meanwhile, looked at how residential architecture could evolve from traditional single-family developments to alternative models of living."From our first conversations together, we solidified a commitment to showing design in myriad forms," said Wilkinson."We knew that some installations would look at design elements within home spaces, representing ideas about culture, heritage or aesthetics," she added."However, we also felt it was important that the visitor encounter other facets of design beyond objects and decorative arts such as exploring social justice through the spectre of design."The exhibition will be on view until summer 2025According to her, Designing Justice + Designing Spaces's The Architecture of Reentry project, a mobile refuge room prototype for individuals reentering communities from prison, is a good example of that thinking."Design is embedded in decisions that shape our commutes, our climate, our safety and security," Wilkinson concluded."So, in considering the vastness of the role design plays in how we make home, we understood that we could not engage every facet of the domain, but we wanted to ensure that visitors to a design museum would encounter it in familiar and unfamiliar ways."Held in 2019, the previous Triennial was a "call to action" against climate change, while more recently, the museum showcased an exhibit dedicated to designer Es Devlin. The photography is courtesy of the Cooper Hewitt Design Museum.Making Home-Smithsonian Design Triennial is on show from November 2024 to 10 August 2025 in New York City. WWW.DEZEEN.COMJorge Urias unveils notched brick apartment complex in MexicoDesign practice Jorge Urias Studio has added three brick blocks with notched corners to an apartment complex in Ciudad Jurez, Mxico.Known as the DVS 03 Apartments, the three-buildings were an addition to the Villa Serena complex, which features low-rise brick apartments surrounded by common areas, gardens, a gym, pool and business centre.Jorge Urias Studio has expanded an apartment complex in MexicoJorge Urias Studio, which is based in New York, USA, and Ciudad Jurez, Mxico, completed the 3,250-square metre (35,000-square foot) expansion in August 2023, adding 33 more units to the complex, which already held six other buildings."The meticulous study of the site and the analysis of the axes of the original buildings were the starting point in the design process to create direct relationships between the new sector and the pre-existing environment," the team said. The project encompassed adding three apartment buildings to an existing complexThe three buildings are each composed of three smaller forms, arranged in irregular triangles and connected by open-air, concrete staircases with a thin metal railing. A thin concrete walkway forms a bridge between units on the upper levels. The blocky forms feature signature "notched" corners that alternate between a corbel on ground floor and a backwards slant on the top floor of the three-story complex. The 45-degree "cuts" extend the height of the storey and were created by interlocking and offsetting the bricks around a concrete frame. The studio used multi-coloured bricks to clad the buildingsThe one- and two-bedroom units are wrapped in private balconies and terraces that both shade the interior and "create a dynamic interplay of light and shadow on the buildings facade. The separation between the unit blocks forms deeper shadows that run the full height of the buildings.Read: Sordo Madaleno creates "overgrown ruin" apartment block in MexicoDivided by concrete floorplates that form light grey-coloured datum lines between stories, the red, pink and rust-coloured, brick-clad volumes are differentiated by offsetting the windows and balconies of the second level, creating a set of individuality across the facade, despite relatively similar layouts on the interior."These cleverly maximize interior space and double as functional storage solutions within the apartments," the team said."This results in 33 distinct apartments, each with its own character, contributing to a rich and diverse architectural experience."The buildings are composed of three smaller forms arranged in irregular trianglesThe heaviness of the brick and concrete is juxtaposed by delicate metal railings that are inset into the balconies, and white metal-framed sliding glass doors and windows add a bright detail to the facades.Inside the balconies and within the staircase atrium, the underlying concrete is revealed and finished in an orange-coloured stucco.Other recently completed brick apartment blocks include a curving, red complex in the Netherlands by Martens Willems & Humbl Architecten and a complex accented with glazed copper-coloured bricks in Iran by Hooba Design Group. The photography is by Rafael Gamo.Project credits:Architecture and Design: Jorge Urias StudioDesign Team: Jorge Urias Garza, Christian Cota, Luz Anaid Maravilla, Salvador RuizClient: Departamentos Villa SerenaThe post Jorge Urias unveils notched brick apartment complex in Mexico appeared first on Dezeen.0 Reacties 0 aandelen 11 Views

WWW.CORE77.COMThis Restaurant's Aquarium Bathroom, for Female Patrons OnlyIn Akashi, Japan, the seaside HiPoPo PaPa restaurant boasts a rather unique bathroom. Longtime restaurant owner Koichi Miyanaga built this aquarium bathroom way back in the 1980s, though design firms all told him it was impossible.According to Japanese newspaper The Asahi Shimbun, Koichi DIY'd it with a carpenter buddy and a glassworker buddy. It took them four tries to get it right (one of the early versions cracked under the water pressure). The bathroom, which is enclosed in a stainless steel frame and double panes of 18mm-thick tempered glass, cost a staggering $284,000 to build. The tank is filled with 300 tropical fish.Cool as it is, the bathroom is staggeringly high-maintenance. Miyanaga, who's now in his 70s, spends an hour each morning cleaning the tank and filter, and his monthly water bill is 200,000 (USD $1,303).Miyanaga only allows female patrons to use the bathroomthey're "cleaner users"though they're allowed to show it to male companions with the door open.0 Reacties 0 aandelen 9 Views

WWW.CORE77.COMMicro EVs That Link, Like an ESG CentipedeFrench startup Metacar Mobility Systems has developed a compact EV called Kiwee. Intended as a car sharing service in urban centers, their strange micro-vehicle can link to its brethren, front and back, creating a sort of ESG centipede. These would be stored outside of train stations, like bikeshare stations. As they sit in their station, they charge. The idea behind the linking ability, said to be inspired by shopping carts, is two-fold. One is to minimize the footprint of the vehicles when parked. The other is that, when the vehicles need to be redistributed, a single driver can tow as many units as needed. That linking ability, at least for purposes of redistribution, would swiftly become obsolete if autonomous driving becomes the norm. However, it is interesting to think of how it could have power-sharing or perhaps even safety implications.MMS is currently seeking funding.0 Reacties 0 aandelen 8 Views
