• Sony just changed the PS5 start-up screen to look and sound like a PS1
    metro.co.uk
Company logos dont get more nostalgic (Sony Interactive Entertainment)Sony is celebrating 30 years of PlayStation with some new customisation options designed to tickle your nostalgia, along with a special montage. PlayStation is leaning into its 30th anniversary with special edition consoles and a bumper sale on the PlayStation Store, but it has another treat for those who are old enough to remember Sonys original console. The original PlayStation first launched on December 3, 1994 in Japan, before it came to the rest of the world the following year. It changed the gaming landscape in many ways, and Sony has been one of the most dominant forces in gaming ever since.More importantly, the original PlayStation had a cool boot-up sequence which scolded your retinas when playing under the cover of darkness something Sony has decided to bring back for a limited time on the PlayStation 5.Following an update released on Monday, December 2, the original bright white PlayStation boot-up sequence, complete with the same audio track, will now play when you turn on the PlayStation 5.Theres some extra customisation on the dashboard too. If you head over to the settings, a new PlayStation 30th anniversary tab allows you to alter the theme of the dashboard to past console generations (PlayStation, PlayStation 2, 3, or 4) or to a special anniversary banner. @theretrohub Now that was some unexpected Nostalgia! The latest PlayStation 5 update has added the original PS1 startup sound to mark the 30th anniversary of PlayStation! #gaming #retrogaming #playstation #ps5 #ps1 #startup #sony #nostalgia90an #memories #childhood #fyp original sound The Retro Hub These themes bring back the menu sound cues from the respective console too, along with some small interface changes. Sadly though, as weve tested, it doesnt change the boot-up sequence to the specific console you select.Weirdly, these themes are only for a limited time, although Sony hasnt stated when they will be removed. The PlayStation 5 has been crying out for dashboard customisation for some time though, so its a strange move not to make them permanent. To coincide with the anniversary, Sony has also released an anniversary montage featuring games from across its 30-year history. And before you ask: yes, it does feature Bloodborne. The clip, which also features scenes from The Last Of Us, Final Fantasy 7, and Tomb Raider, is soundtracked by a dramatic version of Dreams by The Cranberries.More TrendingTheres a chance Sony might have more tricks up its sleeve this month to mark the 30th anniversary, especially as we approach The Game Awards on December 13. • Wickeds Soundtrack Hits Number 2 on the Billboard Charts
    gizmodo.com
Its not surprising that Wicked, already the U.S. box offices highest-grossing movie based on a Broadway musical, is very nearly topping the album charts, too. Currently sitting at the #2 spot on Billboards Top Album Sales in the Soundtracks and Vinyl Album charts, the Wicked soundtrack debuted as a record breaker. According to Deadline, the Universal Pictures, Verve Records, and Republic Records soundtrack to Part Oneof the movie musical was kept from the #1 spot on the chart (dated Dec. 7) by the debut of Kendrick Lamars surprise albumGNX, which marks his fifth consecutive chart-topper. But hey we think Kendrick Lamars muuuustaaaaard looks good with Ariana Grandes Pink and Cynthia Erivos Green. According to Deadline, reporting off Billboards figures, Wickedhad the largest debut sales week for a stage-to-screen musical film sinceDreamgirls, which was released in 2006, and the last time a stage-to-screen musical soundtrack debuted in the top five was when Chicago hit No. 4 on the February 1, 2003 , peaking at No. 2 a week later. The last stage-to-screen movie musical soundtrack to eventually reach the top two was Les Misrables, which spent a week at No. 1 on the January 19, 2013, chart.Other wins by Wickeds soundtrack include it having launched with 139,000 equivalent album units earned in the week ending November 28the biggest week for a full-length theatrical film soundtrack since Lady Gaga and Bradley Coopers A Star Is Born earned 143,000 units in its second week; Wicked has multiple bops (Popular, Dancing Through Life, Defying Gravity) that seem likely to further propel its success. The songs have also generated digital streams with 67.66 million hits, which is not only huge for a soundtrack but the largest streaming week ever for a stage-to-screen musical film soundtrack. On top of that, of Wickeds opening-week sum, album sales comprise 85,000, with Wicked soundtrack vinyl sales representing nearly 39,000 copies. Long live physical media!Wicked is now in theaters, with Wicked Part Two arriving November 21, 2025. You can find the Wicked soundtrack with all its available collectible releases here, but we are left wanting to know one thing: wheres the Mondo release? Want more io9 news? • Moanas Moana 2 Destiny Was Foretold in the First Film
    gizmodo.com
When the credits rolled on Moana 2, we could not get over the stunning reveal that Moana (Aulii Cravalho) made a huge sacrifice which resulted in the Disney Princess becoming more than a royal wayfinder. As Moana gazed upon her gifts in the form of a new tattoo and oar upgrade, she asked herself does that mean? before Maui (Dwayne Johnson) gave a winking response as a non-answer as they celebrated their win against the gods. So we took to the textsthe first Moana film (streaming on Disney+) and The Art of Moana 2 by Kalikolehua Hurleyto see if we could get to the bottom of this revelation. Image: Chronicle Books Okay, were safe behind the spoiler bar and can shout: does Moana dying and being brought back to life with a new wayfinding tattoo on her arm and a magical oar, courtesy of the gods and her ancestors, mean shes a demi-god? When we went back to the first film, it turns out that gift is something thats been set up since the start of her life. Like the mythologies Joseph Campbell based his heros journey on, the lore is deep. At the start of Moana we meet the future high priestess of Motunui, who the sea choose to safeguard the heart of Te Fiti as a little girl, and she carries the artifact with her into the adolescence when her journey begins. In a vision from the spirit of Tautai Vasa (Gerald Ramsey), the last wayfinder from Motunui, she gets the revelation that her people were voyagers before Maui took the heart of Te Fiti, causing darkness and monsters to spread around them. Shes encouraged by her grandmother Tala to answer the call of her ancestors and become a wayfinder as her dying wish: to Find Maui, grab him by the ear and deliver him across the great ocean to restore the heart of Te Fiti and stop the blight affecting the islands. And as soon as she sails away, the ocean that chose her begins to test her. At the start of her journey, Moana is shipwrecked on an island after basically drowning and washes up on the shore where Maui is exiled. Here we get our first hint, because Moana took on insurmountable odds for a human in order to fight for the future of her people, and is led to the god shes gotta grab by the ear to make things right. And as she gets to know him its explained that Maui was thrown into the sea as a baby but saved by the gods who hooked him up with a new role as a demi-god after he should have drowned, much like Moana almost did. As they become friends, Maui says the ocean was looking for a curly haired non-princess her to deliver him across the great sea to fulfill the promise made, but when Te K refuses to let Maui deliver the heart (he gets his tush deservedly handed back to him), he doesnt take it in stride. He tells her shes just a girl, Moana tells him the ocean chose me, and out of anger Maui says it chose wrongthe second test in a mythological sense.Moana lets this get to her for a moment, and gives the sea the heart back, refusing the call once again. You have to choose someone else, she tells the sea. Then her grandmother Tala shows up to tell her if shes ready to go home she will be with her, but Moana takes her oar (a source of power) and hesitates. This of course leads to the gut-wrenching performance where she sings I am Moana! as her grandmother and Tautai Vasa help her realize who she is, realizing the call is inside her like her ancestors. This moment gives her boost she needs to know the way and she performs a superhuman feat to restore Te Fitis heart. At the end she goes back home to better prepare to be a wayfindershes still just a teen. These events are is echoed at the end of Moana 2. In the sequel, when Maui and Moana along with their crew prepare to take on the storm God Nalo, its a feat thats dangerous for any human. Her ancestor Tautai Vasa couldnt reach Motufetu, which is why he guides Moana so she can complete the mission and break the angered god Nalos curse on humanity to keep them apart. After a few close calls, it becomes clear Moana is training for something greater as sung in the Rocks Maui anthem, Can I Get a Chee Hoo?Heres a look at the god in the making training montage panels from The Art ofMoana2: Image: Chronicle Books Moana was meant to follow her ancestors shooting star to complete her destiny of reuniting the islands of the sea. Even another trapped goddess, the Batwoman Matangi, taught Moana to get lost and take unconventional paths like Gate of the Gods, which how can an ordinary human even take? Looking back now, we can argue Moana has had the seeds of being a demi-god from the start, having survived things no human ever has. After she and her crew were transported to Motufetus sunken spot, its Maui time, but the storm god Nalo hits Maui with his lightning striking a blow that strips him and his hook of powers and renders him human before he can raise the island out of the sea. The song Beyond echoes her fate, as Moana sings There is destiny in motion/And its only just begun/Now will this life Ive worked so hard for come undone? Her grandmother answers, Ill always be right beside you, But perhaps youre meant for more, and you can see on the following pages of The Art of Moana 2 the strength of the sea backs Moana up as she dives in to perform another superhuman feat. Image: Chronicle Books Moana dives deep, swimming towards Motufetu to fufill the destiny of her people and Nalo strikes her with lightning. It seems Maui was right all along that no human can take on the gods, and Moana effectively dies. But her sacrifice isnt for nothing and her ancestors show up to help her rise to her destiny. Here is where Moana is finally ready and along with the blessing of the sea gods is seemingly granted the role of a demi-god with the wayfinding tattooss that appear on her arm and power into her now magical oar.Wed like to think that the art from her historian crew member depicting their journey in Moana 2 (as seen below from the behind the scenes book) confirms it. Image: Chronicle Books Moana 2 is out in theaters. The Art of Disney Moana 2 is on sale now. Want more io9 news? The architect proposed that the building should not stand out by being different from its surroundings and attract attention, but rather appear as a defamiliarization amongst the familiarity of its surroundings. He borrowed Viktor Shklovsky's concept of 'defamiliarization'. • Chromebook Cyber Tools Help Secure Schools Against Digital Assaults
    www.technewsworld.com
Schools and organizations that deploy vast numbers of computers have a much-needed computing edge against cybersecurity risks with enterprise-grade Chromebooks.Consumer-grade Chromebooks come with what Google calls defense in depth, which provides multiple layers of protection. If attackers succeed in bypassing one layer, others remain in effect. The networked Chromebooks deployed in school systems, medical facilities, and government offices take multi-layer security and boost it with additional features. One of them is Zero Trust security, a framework that verifies every user and device. All Chromebook devices run ChromeOS, an embedded operating system built around Googles Chrome web browser. They run the same Google-certified operating image system. This built-in heightened security and automatic updates are designed for Zero Trust security and require no monitoring by users.Endpoint resilience and data protection are two critical components of Zero Trust, augmented by robust data loss prevention (DLP) and granular access controls. Running enterprise-level Chromebooks on an organizations network is easily maintained by the IT system administrator through a console inaccessible to users. The approach works whether students or employees use the Chromebook devices internally or remotely, ensuring that security shields are always engaged. For example, users can access their devices using QR codes and picture-based login options.Schools have become frequent targets for cyberattacks like ransomware, phishing, and malware, said Jeremy Burnett, vice president of technology at CTL, during a recent seminar where his company presented on the updated security features built into both consumer and enterprise Chromebooks.CTL is a Chromebook manufacturer and ChromeOS OEM service provider that partners with Google to deliver tailored solutions for educators, learners, and businesses. These solutions address the growing threats of cyberattacks faced by schools and organizations.ChromeOS Foundational SecurityAccording to Andrew Luong, partner success engineer for Google and ChromeOS, the goal is to have strong authentication with second factors or security keys. Despite the other login options, students and others less familiar with technology prefer passwords.Making users change passwords frequently is complex because every app you use today asks for longer and more complex passwords. Its become quite a hassle, he told the virtual seminar audience.Googles password manager has been super helpful in generating stronger passwords because the more you have to change them, the less likely you will remember them. Googles various logon tools help users handle better passwords.Another major challenge is device health, he added. Devices must be updated regularly with the latest security patches. Using ChromeOS is where we really shine, noted Luong. ChromeOS devices update automatically, a key benefit and differentiator, with all running the same Google-certified operating image. However, he added that school IT teams must ensure that these devices are connected to get those updates and remain on the version you approve in compliance with your district or your school.Using the IT administration console makes it easy to keep them on a particular version of ChromeOS so that the students can take their tests or the teachers or staff can use their classroom tools. What we are doing in our console is having Google AI surface and show you, as you log into the Cloud Console, that devices are all up to date, he said.ChromeOS Security Behind the ScenesUpdates are installed in the background on the second copy of the OS. The process does not interfere with any users work. When all the updates are downloaded, a reboot button appears to load the new OS version.Chromebooks include Verified Boot, a trust connector technology that verifies the integrity of the operating system during startup and ensures the system has not been tampered with. If tampering or corruption is detected, the system automatically attempts to repair itself, often by restoring the OS to its original state. This ensures that the operating system remains secure and intact, addressing any failures in its integrity.Enterprise Chromebooks now have context-aware signals to check the integrity of the running ChromeOS version before it allows the devices to connect to school applications. That is an innovation in the zero-trust architecture framework, explained Luong.Another recent security feature added to the IT management console is threat detection and response, which does not use any agents. The management license enables admins to configure and monitor information flowing from ChromeOS device security events into the security event notification system. So centralized reporting and insights make it easy to have that zero-trust framework and enhance your cybersecurity, he said. ChromeOS has built-in malware protection. No ransomware has ever been reported [on ChromeOS devices].These enhanced enterprise cybersecurity features are available through the admin console under a licensed plan from an authorized provider like CTL to enterprise-grade devices. Consumer-grade Chromebooks all have the other features mentioned regarding automatic updates and built-in malware and antivirus protection.Insider Risks in School CybersecurityLuong stressed an essential point about the rigorous cybersecurity protections inherent in all Chromebook devices. They cannot always survive careless employee actions. When it comes to phishing, about 90% of data breaches in K-12 schools result from a system employee who is clicking on a link and that is not a knock on school system employees, he said.If that clicking results in a ransomware attack, the fault is not with Chromebooks. Education institutions are among the most targeted sectors. That is where cybersecurity training comes into play. On average, U.S. schools and colleges lose about $500,000 a day to downtime during ransomware attacks. So, the stakes are high when something happens, Luong observed. CyberNut offers security awareness training. The companys platform is designed to be extremely gamified and engaging, based on micro training sessions with short, gamified experiences. The real objective is to allow schools to measure behavior change. Our success is not just based on checking a box for faculty staff after they watch a short video and take a quiz. We are laser-focused and deliver measurable behavior change through an ongoing, perpetual training experience, said Oliver Page, co-founder and CEO of CyberNut.He offers a free trial, allowing organizations to learn about cybersecurity training. That includes a free phishing assessment to see how a school district is positioned from a security posture perspective. The High Cost of Cyberattacks on SchoolsThe quality of phishing emails has become more sophisticated over the past 10 or 20 years, with ransomware attacks on K-12 schools have increasing substantially in the last year. According to Page, most of those attacks come through malicious email and phishing. That is scary because depending on how you calculate that number. If you are talking about schools that were targeted in some way and something happened, it is closer to 100% of schools receiving malicious emails that could lead to a ransomware attack every day. So, it is prevalent, said Page.Several factors put schools in the crosshairs so prominently. Among the primary causes is a lack of budget, which leads to a lack of staffing and expertise. That gets bad when we couple it with thousands of devices to manage and secure. We have tons of extremely valuable data, Page warned. The median ransomware payment last year was $6.5 million. In addition to that ransom, you are looking at additional millions in recovery costs. One of the realities of that is that nobody teaches students about cyber safety, he added. Parents spend an average of 46 minutes educating their children on cybersecurity in their entire lifetime.Couple that with the fact that the average child above the age of 13 spends seven hours a day online, it is easy to see where the disparity and the concern lies, he concluded.
