Two arrested after 'hazardous drone operation' near Boston airportEPA-EFE/REX/ShutterstockFile photo of a plane taking off from Logan International Airport in BostonTwo people have been arrested after allegedly conducting a "hazardous drone operation" near the airspace of the US city of Boston's main airport, police said.Robert Duffy, 42, and Jeremy Folcik, 32, were arrested on Long Island, part of the Boston Harbor Islands, on Saturday night. They were charged with trespassing and police said they may face further counts and fines over the drones, which were "dangerously close" to Logan International Airport.Their arrests follow a series of drone sightings across the US north-east in recent weeks. Police have given no indication that the sightings are connected to these arrests.Police said the incident in Boston occurred at 16:30 local time (21:30 GMT) on Saturday when a police officer detected a drone operating "dangerously close" to Logan International Airport.Police said they identified the drone's location and tracked the operators' position to a decommissioned health campus on Long Island. Because of the drone's proximity to an airport, FBI counter-terrorism agents helped the investigation. What we know about the mysterious drones buzzing over New JerseyWhen officers arrived on the scene, police said three people attempted to flee, two of whom - Mr Duffy and Mr Folcik - were apprehended. A drone was discovered in a backpack carried by Mr Duffy, police said. The third suspect is believed to have fled the island in a small vessel and has not so far been found. It was not immediately clear whether Mr Duffy and Mr Folcik had legal representation. Police said they were yet to be arraigned. US government officials have been seeking to reassure residents of the north-east that no national or public security threats have been identified in the hundreds of drone sightings.Flying objects have been reported in states including New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Connecticut and Massachusetts, but most of the sightings have been in New Jersey.Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas told ABC News on Sunday the federal government was working in "close co-ordination" with state and local authorities on the issue. He said it was "critical" they be given the ability to counter drone activity under federal supervision.Mayorkas said the rise in drone sightings could be down to a change in federal law last year that allows the aircraft to be flown at night."That may be one of the reasons why now people are seeing more drones than they did before, especially from dawn to dusk," he said.He also said he knew of "no foreign involvement" in drone sightings around the US north-east.New York Governor Kathy Hochul has called for Congress to grant states more powers to tackle the drones, which forced runways at Stewart Airfield in the state to shut down for about an hour on Friday night. She said on Sunday that federal officials were sending a drone detection system to New York.Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer has requested that the technology also be sent to New Jersey.

  • Diablo 4's final event of the year has the entire community chasing Treasure Goblins for some cool rewards
    www.vg247.com
Global Goblin GrindDiablo 4's final event of the year has the entire community chasing Treasure Goblins for some cool rewardsDiablo 4 is just about ready to wrap up 2024, and it's going to do so with a very on-theme event.Image credit: Blizzard Entertainment. News by Sherif Saed Contributing Editor Published on Dec. 16, 2024 Diablo 4 is ending whats been its best year yet on a high note with one final event thats going to involve all players. Rather than the usual style of live event, this one features multiple tiers that can only be unlocked through the communitys collective effort. The goal of this one is to kill as many Treasure Goblins as possible all across the games Sanctuary world map.To see this content please enable targeting cookies. The Slay Ride to Hell event has five tiers in total. The more Treasure Goblins the Diablo 4 community kills, the higher through the tiers we all get. With every tier reached, all players will be able to claim reward caches from the Goblin Square in Kyovashad, and Vessel of Hatred owners will get more caches. It all kicks off tomorrow, December 17 at 10am PT, 1pm ET, 6pm UK. The event will continue into the new year, before it wraps up on January 2.The requirements may initially appear a bit high, but considering that millions of players will be contributing to the goal, its likely going to go by very quickly. If tiers 3-5 are reached, the in-game shop will have some limited-time cosmetics, too. The final tier is, obviously, the one we all want, because it rewards a Resplendent Spark - one of the rarest items in the game. Don't let him portla out! | Image credit: Blizzard Entertainment.Blizzard is also bringing back a number of live events to run alongside the big Treasure Goblin chase. Mothers Blessing, which boosts XP and Gold earned, will be active December 17 to January 2. The bonus, as always, stacks with elixirs and any other Urns you may have activated in the battle pass.To make things even more interesting for new and lapsed players, the Spiritborn trial will return December 19 - January 3, giving anyone who does not yet own Vessel of Hatred a chance to try out the new class. You can only take it up to level 25, but that should be enough time to experience the expansion. All your progress carries over, too, should you decide to buy it. As for those who played Diablo 4 in the past and want one more reason to pick it back up, the Winback Booster is available for up to two characters in the Eternal Realm, instantly boosting a character to level 50, unlocking all Altars of Lilith, and even granting you a gear set to match a certain build.

  • You might be surprised to hear it, but Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero is apparently already one of Bandai Namco's best selling games of all time
    www.vg247.com
Rock The DragonYou might be surprised to hear it, but Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero is apparently already one of Bandai Namco's best selling games of all time"I wasn't expecting this." News by Oisin Kuhnke Contributor Published on Dec. 16, 2024 Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero has obviously been popular with fans, but it turns out it might be more successful than anyone might have guessed. It was always clear that Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero was going to do well, given that it's the first new entry in the Budokai series in many years, a fan favourite amongst all the games, but just how well it's done has definitely been a bit of a surprise. It even managed to hit 100,000 concurrent players around launch, a seriously strong figure for a fighting game. And now it's sounding like that success is even bigger than imagined, as speaking to GamesRadar Circana's executive director and games analyst Mat Piscatella shared that Sparking! Zero is one of Bandai Namco's best-selling games of all time, if you can believe it.To see this content please enable targeting cookies. Piscatella said that he was "as surprised as anybody, not only for it to be the best-selling Dragon Ball game, but to be among the best-selling Bandai Namco games all time." He went on to note that Bandai Namco has "had some really big hits over the years," Elden Ring obviously being one of the biggest, making Sparking! Zero just another one of the strong titles it has in its catalogue. "I wasn't expecting this," Piscatella continued."It sure didn't hurt that it had that huge cast of characters and beloved IP allowing people to kind of dig into the history of that thing. Even though I've never personally watched it, I know people are very passionate about Dragon Ball... I'd agree with you that this thing has been one heck of a nice surprise in a year that's been kind of rough overall."As sad as it is, creator Akira Toriyama's passing earlier this year definitely brought out a lot of nostalgia in fans, and with a new anime also airing, there's a lot of love for the series in the air at the moment. And it helps that Sparking! Zero was really good too.

  • UKs internet watchdog finalizes first set of rules for Online Safety law
    techcrunch.com
On Monday, the U.K.s internet regulator, Ofcom, published the first set of final guidelines for online service providers subject to the Online Safety Act. This starts the clock ticking on the sprawling online harms laws first compliance deadline, which the regulator expects to kick in in three months time.Ofcom has been under pressure to move faster in implementing the online safety regime following riots in the summer that were widely perceived to have been fuelled by social media activity. Although it is just following the process lawmakers set out, which has required it to consult on, and have parliament approve, final compliance measures. This decision on the Illegal Harms Codes and guidance marks a major milestone, with online providers now being legally required to protect their users from illegal harm, Ofcom wrote in a press release. Providers now have a duty to assess the risk of illegal harms on their services, with a deadline of March 16, 2025. Subject to the Codes completing the Parliamentary process, from March 17, 2025, providers will need to take the safety measures set out in the Codes or use other effective measures to protect users from illegal content and activity. We are ready to take enforcement action if providers do not act promptly to address the risks on their services, it added. According to Ofcom, more than 100,000 tech firms could be in scope of the laws duties to protect users from a range of illegal content types in relation to the over 130 priority offences the Act sets out, which cover areas including terrorism, hate speech, child sexual abuse and exploitation, and fraud and financial offences.Failure to comply risks fines of up to 10% of global annual turnover (or up to 18 million, whichever is greater). In-scope firms range from tech giants to very small service providers, with various sectors impacted including social media, dating, gaming, search, and pornography. The duties in the Act apply to providers of services with links to the UK regardless of where in the world they are based. The number of online services subject to regulation could total more than 100,000 and range from some of the largest tech companies in the world to very small services, wrote Ofcom. The codes and guidance follow a consultation, with Ofcom looking at research and taking stakeholder responses to help shape these rules, since the legislation passed parliament last fall and became law back in October 2023.The regulator has outlined measures for user-to-user and search services to reduce risks associated with illegal content. Guidance on risk assessments, record-keeping, and reviews is summarized in an official document.Ofcom has also published a summary covering each chapter in todays policy statement. The approach the U.K. law takes is the opposite of one-size-fits all with, generally, more obligations placed on larger services and platforms where multiple risks may arise compared to smaller services with fewer risks. However, smaller lower risk services do not get a carve out from obligations, either. And indeed many requirements apply to all services, such as having a content moderation system that allows for swift take-down of illegal content; having mechanism for users to submit content complaints; having clear and accessible terms of service; removing accounts of proscribed organizations; and many others. Although many of these blanket measures are features that mainstream services, at least, are likely to already offer. But its fair to say that every tech firm that offers user-to-user or search services in the U.K. is going to need to undertake an assessment of how the law applies to their business, at a minimum, if not make operational revisions to address specific areas of regulatory risk. For larger platforms with engagement-centric business models where their ability to monetize user-generated content is linked to keeping a tight leash on peoples attention greater operational changes may be required to avoid falling foul of the laws duties to protect users from myriad harms.A key lever to drive change is the law introducing criminal liability for senior executives in certain circumstances, meaning tech CEOs could be held personally accountable for some types of non-compliance. Speaking to BBC Radio 4s Today program on Monday morning, Ofcom CEO MelanieDawes suggested that 2025 will finally see significant changes in how major tech platforms operate. What were announcing today is a big moment, actually, for online safety, because in three months time, the tech companies are going to need to start taking proper action, she said. What are they going to need to change? Theyve got to change the way the algorithms work. Theyve got to test them so that illegal content like terror and hate, intimate image abuse, lots more, actually, so that doesnt appear on our feeds. And then if things slip through the net, theyre going to have to take it down. And for children, we want their accounts to be set to be private, so they cant be contacted by strangers, she added. That said, Ofcoms policy statement is just the start of it actioning the legal requirements, with the regulator still working on further measures and duties in relation to other aspects of the law including what Dawes couched as wider protections for children that she said would be introduced in the new year. So more substantive child safety-related changes to platforms that parents have been clamouring to force may not filter through until later in the year.In January, were going to come forward with our requirements on age checks so that we know where children are, said Dawes. And then in April, well finalize the rules on our wider protections for children and thats going to be about pornography, suicide and self harm material, violent content and so, just not being fed to kids in the way that has become so normal but is really harmful today.Ofcoms summary document also notes that further measures may be required to keep pace with tech developments such as the rise of generative AI, indicating that it will continue to review risks and may further evolve requirements on service providers. The regulator is also planning crisis response protocols for emergency events such as last summers riots; proposals for blocking the accounts of those who have shared CSAM (child sexual abuse material); and guidance for using AI to tackle illegal harms.Ofcom to push for better age verification, filters and 40 other checks in new online child safety code

  • Google names its new India chief
    techcrunch.com
Google has appointed Preeti Lobana to lead its India business, filling a key position that had been vacant since Sanjay Guptas promotion to Asia-Pacific president in July.Lobana, who was vice president of advertising technology at Google, takes over as the company pushes its AI products in India amid intensifying competition in the digital market. She joined Google in 2016. India is one of the key overseas markets for Google, which has spent billions in helping hundreds of millions of Indians come online and in digitizing local businesses. In 2020, the company committed to spend another $10 billion in India. But the search giant is also facing mounting regulatory scrutiny in the worlds second largest internet and wireless market. India fined Google $162 million in 2022 for anti-competitive practices on Android. Days later, it imposed another penalty of $113 million after concluding that the Android-maker had abused the dominant position of Google Play Store in the country, where more than 95% of smartphones run Android. In March this year, the Indian antitrust regulator opened another investigation into Alphabets Google, alleging the tech giant implemented its in-app billing policies in an unfair and discriminatory manner.Roma Datta Chobey, who served as interim chief, will return to running the companys digital business unit. Before joining Google, Lobana spent much of her career in banking, holding positions at NatWest, American Express, and Standard Chartered. This is a once-in-a-lifetime moment to shape the future with AI, unlocking unprecedented opportunities for businesses to boost productivity, solve critical challenges, and create innovative solutions, she wrote in a LinkedIn post.
