In previous years, the smartphone has leaned heavily into its an iPhone and the gulf in performance between iOS and Android.Yet mid-range market has changed in the three years since Apple released its last iPhone SE in March 202. The power and flexibility of handsets such as Google's Pixel 8a and Samsungs Galaxy A55 deliver an experience that, for many consumers, matches their needs so tightly theres no need to look at more expensive handsets.The iPhone SE brand has followed this same path for three iterations and is set to do so with the upcoming fourth generation. What the iPhone SE cant do this time around is coast on the iPhone brand name. Consumers trust several brand names at this point (such as the aforementioned Google and Samsung), and the performance of Android is no longer a limitation that the SE can leverage.iPhone SE and Apple IntelligenceOne of the weakest areas for Apple in the current generation of smartphones is that of generative AI. While Google launched the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8a as the first AI smartphones in October 2023, Apple did not confirm plans until its Worldwide Developer Conference in June 2024. It would take until October 202412 months after Googlebefore any of the awkwardly backronymed Apple Intelligence apps would debut on iOS. Even then, the full suite of first-generation apps will not be available until mid-March 2025, nearly 18 months after Androids debut and six months into the second generation of generative AI on Android handsets.MORE FOR YOUThe iPhone SE may launch with generative AI, but it will launch with an AI suite behind the competition, untested by consumers, and shackled by Apples closed operating system in functionality.There is a knock-on benefit of moving to AI. It forces the specification of the iPhone SE to be sufficient to run Apple Intelligence not just today but for the next few years. That means running the latest Apple Silicon chipset with adequate RAM and storage to make good use of Apples generative AI tools. The vanilla iPhone 16 has already benefitted from this, jumping up to the current generation of Apple Silicon rather than sit one generation behind to reduce the bill of materials.Assuming that the iPhone 16 is running the minimum specs necessary, the iPhone SE will have to match the 16s specifications.iPhone SE and iPhone 16Apples biggest risk may be to the iPhone 16. With the iPhone SE likely to match the core specs, the bill of materials will be cut elsewhere. You can expect changes made to the chassis and casing to use cheaper materials, expect an older generation of lenses and sensors in the camera (as well as dropping down to use a single camera lens), and probably slower technology driving the display and connectivity.Yet in all of that, and as the likes of Google and Samsung have discovered, the base level of hardware in the mid-range these days is more than sufficient for the average consumer. In comparing what I need my phone to do, the SE and the 16 will come out broadly level except the iPhone SE will be significantly cheaper, potentially as much as $150.This also applies to the iPhone 17, which is expected to launch 6 months after the iPhone SE, although in the case of the 17, there will likely be a bump in some specifications. Nevertheless, Apple will have to dance around the issue of pushing the iPhone SE sales and not cannibalizing the market for the vanilla iPhones of 2024 and 2025..The iPhone SEs Narrowing Path To SuccessWith a mid-cycle release, a remit to offer value for money, and a reputation of elegance and luxury to maintain, the iPhone SE is a challenging release for Apple. It needs to thread a very narrow path of being an outstanding handset while not damaging the reputation of the iPhone brand. What just happened? Qualcomm has emerged victorious in a high-stakes trial against Arm Holdings over a disputed chip technology license. The case, which unfolded in federal court in Delaware, centered on Qualcomm's $1.4 billion acquisition of startup Nuvia in 2021 and the subsequent use of Arm's chip architecture. Friday's jury's verdict found that Qualcomm did not violate the terms of its agreement with Arm when incorporating the acquired technology into its chips without paying a higher licensing rate. Thereafter, I can simply look at my computer keyboard to find a floating Connect button. If I select it, a large virtual window appears and my PC monitor goes dark. This happens in about five seconds and feels almost seamless.RelatedMeta Quests cinematic mode gives Mixed Reality Link a giant curved screen. Digital TrendsMixed Reality Links virtual display appears bigger than my current 24-inch physical monitor, more like a 27-inch screen in its default size and position. It has the standard 16:9 aspect ratio and appears to hover in 3D space within the Quest 3s dual 2064 x 2208-pixel displays. I can also use cinematic mode to make it a very large curved screen. Its so big that its hard to capture in a screenshot.On a Quest 3S or older Quest, the resolution is about 30% lower, and the Fresnel lenses arent as clear. To enjoy sharper visuals than a Meta Quest can provide, youd need a high-performance PC VR headset or an ultra-premium Apple Vision Pro. Mixed Reality Link wont work with those headsets, but there are other solutions.Adding more VR windows is simple. I point at the lower-right corner to reveal a menu and pinch the plus sign twice to add one another to the right and left sides. Weve seen this trick before with Horizon Workrooms and VR apps like Immersed and Virtual Desktop.Whats different is these are Horizon OS windows that I can move and scale with Quest hand tracking or controllers. I can open Quest 2D apps alongside Windows in a blended environment.I can use passthrough mode to see my surroundings filled with up to six floating windows or I can switch to a virtual environment, which is more fun. As I type, Im surrounded by schools of fish, sea turtles, manta rays, and whales in Metas Oceanarium. Its quite peaceful and can help with focus when working in a busy or crowded space.My Quest 3 can show my Windows desktop within immersive apps like OpenBrush. Digital TrendsI can even enter an immersive app like OpenBrush to paint a 3D shape, then press the Meta button to switch to my Windows desktop without leaving that environment. Mixed Reality Links user interface is nice. I like the way the connect button appears above my keyboard and how quickly I can connect to my PC. I still use my keyboard and mouse to interact with Windows and apps on my computer, but I control Horizon OS with my hands.When I lift my hands away from the keys, the Quest 3 tracks them and responds to pinch and drag gestures. I can resize and reposition windows, add more virtual displays, and open Horizon OS apps alongside Windows apps.In passthrough mode, I can see my room and desk with virtual screens and the dock hovering in space. In immersive mode, Im surrounded by a mountaintop campsite, a misty valley with waterfalls, an Old West mining town at night, or any Horizon OS environment.When Im fully immersed, my keyboard looks like a light gray outline. If I move my hands near the keys, a rectangular portal reveals my keyboard. I can see a portion of my mousepad and mouse, enough to grab it without searching.Microsofts Mixed Reality Link let me arrange virtual monitors but didnt save the layout. Digital TrendsMixed Reality Link is currently in beta testing and there are a few issues with VR display arrangement and the keyboard portal. These arent serious bugs, but unexpected annoyances can add up and become frustrating. I have a few tips that should help.When I resized the VR windows, I was disappointed to see black bars appear at the sides or top and bottom if I didnt get a perfect 16:9 shape. Theres no snapping so its difficult to avoid getting black borders.The default display arrangement is OK, but I prefer vertically stacked monitors, so I set the main display at eye level and moved one below. The Horizon OS dock got in my way so I moved it to the side and manually positioned two displays exactly where I wanted.The magic of hand tracking is very good but it was difficult to place the lower window since it kept switching to the keyboard. Keep the dock and virtual displays away from your keyboard for more reliable operation.I worked very comfortably for a few hours, then stepped away briefly, leaving my headset behind. When I returned, the link had timed out so I reconnected. Thats quick and easy, so no worries there. However, Horizon OS didnt save my custom window arrangements. I didnt feel like re-creating my ideal placement, so I just used the default settings.I really enjoyed Mixed Reality Link, and it has great potential. Im happy to finally see the Meta and Microsoft partnership bear fruit. Earlier efforts like Microsoft Office on Quest were disappointing.Already, Mixed Reality Link is a quick way to use Windows in a virtual environment adding even more value to my Quest 3. If custom display arrangements were saved, it would be a great way to work at a computer in VR. Third-party apps like Immersed, Virtual Desktop, and others are still more versatile productivity solutions since I can pair a keyboard and mouse to my headset and connect to my PC from anywhere.You can use Mixed Reality Link for gaming, but for PC VR gaming, its hard to beat wired headsets like the Pimax Crystal Light that feature sharp 2880 x 2880 resolution and uncompressed visuals for a more realistic and immersive experience.Editors Recommendations

It said the agency continues "actively monitoring Boeing's progress in a variety of ways," including regular reviews by FAA experts of Boeing's safety procedures and issuing airworthiness certificates for every newly produced Boeing 737 Max.The FAA itself has faced scrutiny for its oversight of Boeing. It marked the first time Boeing flew astronauts to space.The astronauts left Earth on June 5 and were supposed to return after eight days, but issues with Starliner's thrusters and helium leaks caused delays. NASA and Boeing began troubleshooting the problems to bring Wilmore and Williams back home. It highlighted just how far Boeing lags behind its competitor, SpaceX.Wilmore and Williams are now expected to return to Earth in 2025 on SpaceX's Crew Dragon spaceship, which launched for the International Space Station in September. The astronauts were initially set to return home in February, but NASA announced they would be delayed until March as SpaceX readies its spaceship. Union strikeThousands of Boeing union members have been on strike since September 13. Large windows allow for this interaction between interior and exterior, while a facade covered with perforated corrugated metal ensures ventilation and protects against direct sunlight.
