Woven leaf lamp concept harmonizes traditional crafts and industrial production
Advancements in technology, material science, and processes have taken mans production capabilities to a whole new level. However, with advanced manufacturing, traditional craftsmanship and values have been left by the wayside, sometimes forgotten, and other times discarded as if they were no longer important or were even counterproductive to progress. Of course, this couldnt be further from the truth, as there will always be elements of traditional crafts and modern tooling that could be mixed in an elegant way. Such is the premise behind this rather striking lamp, highlighting not only the beauty of traditional, handmade crafts but also promoting the culture and the livelihood that also grow alongside it.Designer: Antoni Martorell PascualHandmade products are admittedly not suitable for mass production. As many have realized by now, however, not everything has to be mass-produced in the first place. Simple, everyday items might be fine with generic and standardized designs, but in exchange for speed and ease of manufacturing, they often lack personality, depth, and impact. Fortunately, you dont always have to go to either extreme and find some middle ground that showcases the strengths of both methods.Catalina is a lamp design that does exactly this by combining ordinary lamp electronics and foundations with a lampshade thats meticulously woven by hand. Specifically, it uses palmetto leaves and traditional weaving techniques called llata from Mallorca on one of Spains Balearic Islands. Unsurprisingly, this technique is passed down through generations and is mostly done by the women of the locale, a practice whose existence is being threatened by the rise of mass-produced furniture and lighting. This lamp, however, illustrates the beauty that can come from the melding of past and present. The woven palm leaves form two cylindrical shapes in the form of an eight that encloses two bulbs inside each space. A gap between the two circles is filled by a transparent sheet of glass or fiberglass, serving as a diffuser for the light. The effect is a serene glow that passes through the weave like an otherworldly light.Lamps like Catalina take time to make and are often more expensive because of the labor involved. That, however, also makes the design more special, giving it a unique character similar to a limited edition product. And unlike factory-made lampshades, these handwoven materials will have differences and imperfections, flaws that become selling points exactly because they are different from any other lamp from the same product line. The post Woven leaf lamp concept harmonizes traditional crafts and industrial production first appeared on Yanko Design.

How to share passwords with Apples Shared Groups
MacworldWhile most passwords we create should be kept strictly private, there are always some accounts or other secrets we need to share with a limited number of other people. Starting in iOS 17, iPadOS 17, and macOS Sonoma, you can create groups within Apples Passwords system to share and sync passwords securely.Apple imposes some significant limitations on sharing:Everyone must be running iOS 17, iPadOS 17, or macOS Sonoma (or later, starting this fall) to access items in a shared group. They must be in your contacts list.Theres no support for Android or Windows or for web-based access. If that fits your sharing requirements, then using Apples system could be the best course as it requires no additional software or subscription. To start sharing passwords on an iPhone or iPad:Go to Settings > Passwords.Tap the + (plus) sign in the upper-right corner and tap New Shared Group.Enter a name into the Group Name field.Tap Add People to populate the group. You can browse the list or start typing their email address, phone number, or name. If someone meets the tests above to be in a shared group, their contact item appears in blue.Tap Create.Choose the passwords that you want to share with the group and tap Move. These passwords are moved from your personal store of entries into this shared group. (You cant share the same entry with multiple groups.) You can tap Not Now to bypass adding any until later.Choose whether or not you want to notify people you added to the group, which alerts them to an invitation. If you opt not to, they will still see the invitation in Settings > Passwords > Group Invitations.Create a new sharing group for items you want to have or give common access to among a defined set of people.Create a new sharing group for items you want to have or give common access to among a defined set of people.FoundryCreate a new sharing group for items you want to have or give common access to among a defined set of people.FoundryFoundryIn macOS:Open System Settings and click the Passwords item.Click the + (plus) sign to the right of the Search field and choose New Shared Group.Click Create.Choose passwords and click Move or click Not Now.Click Notify via Messages, which creates an invitation message, or click Not Now.You can move entries into or out of shared groups:In iOS/iPadOS, tap an entry in your main passwords list or in a shared group, then tap the Group pop-up menu to switch between My Passwords or other groups. In macOS, Control-click/right-click a password entry in the main list or in a shared group, and then choose Move to Group >Group Name. UK ends Apple and Google app store scrutiny, but not for long
Apple and Google can take a moment to breathe, as the UKs competition regulator has decided to end its investigation into their app stores but not for long. The UK Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) today confirmed it is closing itsongoing investigations into bothApples App StoreandGoogle Play, but only because a much tougher set of regulations is about to come into effect.Breathing space, but troubles coming Passed into law in May, the UKsDigital Markets, Competition, and Consumers Act(DMCCA) will give the CMA more powers and more flexibility in how its powers are applied. Principally, these powers include the ability to impose requirements on the conduct of firms in digital markets where those firms have been designated as having Strategic Market Status, and to impose significant fines against firms if those requirements are breached. The intention of these laws issimilarto Europes Digital Markets Act (DMA).The DMCCA sets up the Digital Markets Unit (DMU), a new regulatory body within the CMA that will police large technology companies. Will Hayter, Executive Director for Digital Markets at the CMA, said: Once the new pro-competition digital markets regime comes into force, well be able to consider applying those new powers to concerns we have already identified through our existing work.In 2022, the regulatorsmarket study ofthe UK mobile ecosystem found that Apple and Google held an effective monopoly over app distribution in the UK. The CMA then commenced investigating both companies for alleged anti-competitive behavior, but the investigations took place within the framework of a previous set of laws that will be superseded by the DMCCA.Concerning Apple, in a statement, the CMA said the closure of the investigations should not be understood to mean the concerns it was investigating had been resolved. The decision does not affect any other action that the CMA may wish to take in relation to Apples conduct in this area in the future, it said.Commenting on the decision, Hayter added: Its critical that tech businesses in the UK, including app developers, can have access to a fair and competitive app ecosystem, helping to grow the sector, boost investment and result in better outcomes for UK consumers. These are all factors we are considering before launching our first investigations under the new regime. The UK regulator now has more powerThere are numerous new powers within the DMCCA. LikeEuropes DMA, the law means some companies with a global turnover of more than 25b or UK turnover of 1b+ may be designated as having Strategic Market Status (SMS).Companies given such status will be required to follow requirements on their conduct imposed by the CMA, though theCMA does sayit wants to build productive relationships with those firms.Perhaps so, but as aLinklaterslegal blog explained earlier this year, The scope of permitted conduct requirements is incredibly broad, giving the DMU very wide discretion to decide what obligations should be imposed on each firm. The CMA haspreviouslysaid it expects the first companies to be designated as such will be revealed in July 2025, but this date may now slip a little in consequence of the recent UK election. Those requirements will allegedly be developed with the intention of opening up competition and consumer choice in digital markets. That likely extends to app stores and payment systems being opened up, as they are being in the EU under the DMA. The CMA can also impose big fines on companies that fail to comply. It may be instructive to note that the CMArecently rejected commitmentsmade by Google in response to its concerns. Google had given app developers some additional flexibility in the use of alternative payment systems. Similar to those Apple has proposed in the EU, Googles proposals included a commission and pop-up screens to warn users when they were about to use a third-party payment system.Open markets seem inevitableWhile the CMA hasnt yet said which companies may be investigated for possible SMS designation, its unlikely Apple, Google, or other Big Tech firms will be able to avoid it. After all, the regulator does state that it anticipates that its early work under the new digital markets competition regime will build on and leverage its experience in areas it has already studied, such as mobile ecosystems, which includes app stores.
