Christopher Nolans Next Film Is an Adaptation of Homers The Odyssey
The speculation can finally end. Universal took to social media Monday to give film fans everywhere a present: the first official description of Christopher Nolans next movie. Its called The Odyssey which, yes, is an adaptation of Homers poem. Christopher Nolans next film The Odyssey is a mythic action epic shot across the world using brand new IMAX film technology. The film brings Homers foundational saga to IMAX film screens for the first time and opens in theaters everywhere on July 17, 2026, the statement read. Written by Homer centuries before the birth of Christ, The Odyssey is the follow-up to The Illiad. It follows Odysseus, a Greek hero who travels home after the Trojan War. A sprawling adventure featuring mythical creatures, battles and more, its a story that has been adapted in seemingly every medium in seemingly every era. But, coming from Nolan, you can be sure this will be the biggest, most faithful, and massive adaptation yet. Plus, its a far cry from previous rumors about the film, such as it being about helicopter or the one reported on by this website which was it was a period film about vampires. Hey, at least it is a period film. Matt Damon, Charlize Theron, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson and Lupita Nyongo star though theres no word on who is playing who. But lets speculate a bit. Were thinking and this is totally from colleague Sabina Graves that it would make sense to see Matt Damon as Odysseus, Holland as his son Telemachus, Hathaway as Penelope, Theron as Athena, Pattinson as Poseidon (or the Cyclops), Nyongo as Circe and Zendaya as Calypso. But, again, pure speculation. And whats the brand new IMAX film technology the studio is touting? Sounds exciting. But not as exciting as Nolan going for the biggest story of his entire career, and maybe his second Oscar. The Odyssey, directed by Christopher Nolans, opens July 17, 20216. Want more io9 news? Dan Da Dans Dub Actors Are Feeling the Love
As 2024 comes to a close, Dan Da Dan has become the talk of the shonen town. From the chemistry of its two leads to its banger opening and offbeat style, Science Sarus adaptation of Yukinobu Tatsus supernatural romcom has captured hearts and minds of animation fans, whove been tuning in on a weekly basis to see what madness Momo Ayase and Okarun will get caught up in next. In early December, io9 spoke with Momo and Okaruns respective dub actors, Abby Trott and A.J. Beckles, who came to the material through different avenues. Beckles was already reading the manga prior to auditioning, while Trott only knew of it through the audition. They both became captivated, and were pretty shocked they booked the partsand how much the dub specifically has been singled out as great in its own right. Seeing some of the comments about how some people enjoy the dub, and have switched over to it, has been really cool, said Beckles. The sub v. dub war has existed since the dawn of time, but he said Dan Da Dan avoided getting looped in thanks to heavy marketing for its dub, and the actors having proper time to record. That isnt always the case with anime, and according to him, the shows better for it: without preconceived notions surrounding either the Japanese or English voices, viewers have been free to like whichever version they want. Gkids/Science Saru While audiences have sung the shows praises for months now, some viewers were thrown off by the first episodes second half, wherein both Momo and Okarun find themselves in peril by otherworldly beings. While Okarun gets chased around and possessed by the demonic Turbo Granny, Momo ends up in a more harrowing situation wherein shes kidnapped by aliens called the Serpo, who strip her down to her underwear and prepare to steal her reproductive organs. Its a pretty sudden tonal shift, not helped by there still being traces of comedy as the Serpo call said organs bananas. When asked, both actors readily acknowledged how unpleasant the scene could be to watch, and neither faulted anyone for jumping off the show because of it. For Trott, the scene is a key moment for her character, since thats when Momos psychokinetic powers emerge. Once she realizes what she can do, she immediately goes on the offensive, and several of the seasons big action beats have involved Momo getting a better handle on her abilitiesso to have her come into that power and immediately use it to kick the Serpos butts was satisfying. In that scene, were not saying the Serpoians are good, its quite the opposite. Theres a lot of dynamics to this anime, and definitely some hard parts to get through, said Trott. But the good outweighs those tough to watch moments.Beckles shared a similar sentiment, and pointed to how Momo using her grandmothers advice and getting a surprise assist from Turbo Granny as examples of how women support each other throughout the story. As a manga reader, he indicated things improve going forward, saying viewers would see, as the show continues, that it does take those moments more seriously. The two actors also highlighted Okaruns presence and healthy perspective on women, which lets the show contrast him with the more invasive Serpoians. Gkids/Science Saru After its fourth episode, Momo and Okaruns slow burn romance really begins to take shape. Their growing relationship is all the more notable since other shonen often have romance as an addition to their stories rather than the core. Tatsu famously revealed that while pitching Dan Da Dan, his editor Shihei Lin recommended he read shoujo (or young girl) manga, which puts focus on personal and romantic relationships. If Lin hadnt doled out the advice, the series might not be what it is now, and would likely lack the same impact and excitement around it. Audiences love a good love story, and they know when its not hitting. But because theyre so well-written and clearly definedand can never be normal around the other, especially in publicits hard not to root for Momo and Okarun.Even when the pair are caught up in some wild stuff, their feelings for one another inform nearly everything they do. Learning this was a love story didnt change either actors handling of the material, but Trott said the scene where Okarun and Momo bicker for the first time made it clear where things were headed. For Beckles, some of his favorite scenes for his character are when Okaruns just trying to figure out how to talk to a girl for the first time, or telling Momo how much he cares what she thinks. The dynamic between the leads is just as important in the booth. When it comes time to record, the actors both said they prefer when the others already come in first, since it allows them to feed off one another. Trott said she gets so much from her co-lead, especially since Okarun often provokes a certain response from Momo that makes her adjust her responses accordingly. The sames very much true for Beckles, who admitted the more intimate, romantic scenes would trip him up since Okarun tends to speak from his heart.Where Momos encounter with the Serpo helps trigger her psychic powers, Okaruns experience with Turbo Granny leaves him with a partial essence of the spirits powers, which let him transform into a faster, smoother, and more laid-back emo version of himself. As Beckles explained it, finding a default voice for Okarunwhich hed then use for when the characters more expressive or in his Turbo modetook several recording sessions. In those early episodes, Okarun was always screaming or whispering, and there was so much of it happening back-to-back-to-back to establish a baseline. Beckles credited voice director Alex von David for guiding him toward moments to make his voice more nerdy or more endearing. Alex has the overall vision, and he knows where Okaruns going. I really leaned on him on the points where it was difficult, but its good when its a challenge to try and do something the right way. One specific challenge he cited was episode fours goodbye scene between Okarun and Momo, which he called one of his most infuriating moments to record. Since he came into the booth first that day, it was hard to consider Okaruns thought process, how Trott would perform during her recording time, and the meaning behind each goodbye uttered. Once [Abby] recorded first the next day, he said, the puzzle pieces started to connect. I could play off her emotions, and it could build that way. I dont think we couldve gotten that endearing, childlike read without her See you later!'Gkids/Science Saru During our talk, Beckles and Trott shouted out several others thatve made Dan Da Dans adaptation a success. Along with the fans and von David, they gave glowing praise to their fellow dub actors Lisa Reimold (Aira) and Barbara Goodson (Turbo Granny), and their own characters respective Japanese performers, Natuski Hanae and Shion Wakayama. (Trott called Wakayamas Momo one of her favorite anime performances ever, and a perfect embodiment of Japans gyaru subculture.) Going on this journey has been a blast for them both, so its good well be hearing them again on Netflix and Crunchyroll with season two in July 2025. And while they couldnt say anything about whats to come, Beckles teased that where things left off is tame compared to where the show goes later. Want more io9 news? Check out when to expect the latest Marvel, Star Wars, and Star Trek releases, whats next for the DC Universe on film and TV, and everything you need to know about the future of Doctor Who.

True Star of Crocodile Dundee, Burt the Croc, Dies at 90
By Harri Weber Published December 23, 2024 | Comments (0) | Burt, the croc made famous by Crocodile Dundee. Photo: Crocosaurus Cove Darwin / Facebook Burt, best known as the bastard saltwater croc fromCrocodile Dundee, died over the weekend. Long live Burt. Along with a knife, thered be no Crocodile Dundee without crocodiles, and Burt both appeared in the 1986 film and also reportedly inspired the prop croc that nearly gobbled up unwitting reporter Sue Charlton (played by Linda Kozlowski) in one critical scene. Burt passed away peacefully at the Crocosaurus Cove in Darwin, Australia, the herpetarium and aquarium wrote on Facebook, estimating that he lived well into his 90s. Named after the late actor Burt Reynolds and weighing in at roughly 1,500 pounds, Burt drives a central conflict in the Australian-American action-comedy flick. The croc rises from murky waters just as Charlton wades in for a cooling dip and a drink, when he (or rather, the prop purporting to be him) suddenly snatches the canteen around her neck with great, big, pointy teeth. In the nick of time, the voyeur Mick Dundee (played by Paul Hogan) leaps into frame and mercilessly deals Burt a deathblow with his iconic knife. The incident trauma-bonds the characters and concludes with an embrace. In Dundees arms, Charlton asks, is it dead? Dundee quips back, well if it isnt, Im gonna have a hell of a job skinning the bastard. Burts apparent on-screen disposition wasnt just fiction, according to the Crocosaurus Cove post. The aquarium described him as a fiery, fierce, and challenging croc who came to be a well-known ambassador for crocodile education. The site also called him a confirmed bacheloran attitude he made clear during his earlier years at a crocodile farm.Burt first arrived at the farm in the 1980s, after being captured from the Reynolds River in Australias Northern Territory, according to the social media post. The largest reptiles alive today, saltwater crocodiles are also native to Eastern India and Southeast Asia. Theyre not listed as endangered, though National Geographic notes that the species reputation as a man-eater puts pressure on the population. It stands to reason that this is due at least in part to films such as Crocodile Dundee, as experts have linked Steven Spielbergs Jaws (1975) to harmful outcomes for sharks. On Facebook, Crocosaurus Cove visitors shared their own colorful memories of Burt and wished the powerful reptile well in the great beyond.Hope the rivers are full of tasty fish where you are now, said one commenter warmly. Hope he WD be stuffed n not incinerated, offered another.Daily NewsletterYou May Also Like By Isaac Schultz Published December 12, 2024 By Isaac Schultz Published December 11, 2024 By Isaac Schultz Published December 4, 2024 By Isaac Schultz Published November 30, 2024 By Matthew Gault Published November 27, 2024 By Isaac Schultz Published November 12, 2024

The project is located in Las Compuertas, Mendoza, Argentina, on a long, narrow site with privileged views of the mountains. In response to the client's desire to build a sustainable winery that would leave the smallest possible carbon footprint, the architects proposed a design based on recycled materials and disused elements, integrating them into a functional and aesthetically unique construction.Save this picture!Save this picture! The initial task was to identify reusable elements that could be sourced locally and in sufficient quantities. Reclaimed old rafters from a derelict adobe warehouse, discarded shipping containers, and oil drilling pipes, among other salvaged materials, were recovered and transformed into the skeleton and essence of the building.Save this picture!Save this picture!Oil borehole pipes formed the main columns of the structure, strategically arranged in a grid to support the roof of the central nave. These columns were constructed by connecting four tubbing pipes with intermittent sections of larger diameter pipes at the center. The old wooden rafters were then carefully dismantled and reinterpreted; with the pendentive now facing downward, they lend a modern and distinctive style to the roof. Surrounding the central nave, the shipping containers were utilized as enclosures, creating functional areas such as the wine shop, tasting rooms, warehouses, and offices. This modular design optimized space usage and upheld the principles of recycling throughout the project.Save this picture! The project's development was a continuous challenge, as materials had to be sourced from "chacaritas" or rescued from demolitions. As a result, the construction process was frequently interrupted, demanding on-the-go design adjustments and modifications to accommodate the available resources.Save this picture!Save this picture! Each recovered element narrates its unique history: the wood repurposed from the mezzanine of the old winery now serves as a partition within the containers. At the same time, aluminum panels from the former ceiling of the iconic Hotel Aconcagua have been reimagined as elegant cladding. Additionally, remnants of solid wood from the winery's construction have been cut into uniform strips, creating a warm and cohesive finish that fully envelops the tasting room.Save this picture! The final result is a winery that harmoniously combines the new and the old, with unique details that highlight the creative reuse of materials, responding efficiently to the functionality required by the winemaking process. The sustainable and collaborative approach between the studio and the client not only reduced the environmental footprint but also gave the project an authentic and coherent character with its surroundings.Save this picture!Project gallerySee allShow lessAbout this officePublished on December 23, 2024Cite: "MAAL Wines / Mora Hughes Arquitectos" 23 Dec 2024. Profiling allocations caused by scripts
I'm trying to make a profiler for scripts to pinpoint hotspots in the code that allocate a lot of memory. To do so i need to have a callback execute whenever an object is created. I tried to use the context's line callback but it doesn't execute during the creation of an object. I think what's needed is a callback executed in asCScriptEngine::CreateScriptObject. Right before it returns the allocated object there should be an optional invocation of a callback that passes the type

Christopher Nolan to adapt The Odyssey with appropriately epic cast
Christopher Nolan has decided to get a bit more literal with his next epic, by taking to the past and adapting Homers The Odyssey, according to a new post on X by Universal Pictures. The reveal came after months of fans speculating about the filmmakers follow-up to Oppenheimer, which won Nolan his first Best Director Oscar along with the prize for Best Picture and five more awards on top of that. Despite guesses that ranged from helicopter movie to period vampire thriller, nothing came close to the truth of Nolan taking on one of the most famous narratives in human history. But while Nolans choice of adaptation may be ambitious, hes certainly already assembled a cast that lives up to the hype. While we dont know what roles anyone is actually playing, we know that Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyongo, and Charlize Theron on are on board, and theres still plenty of time for more stars to join the production. The Odysseys original story follows the mythical hero Odysseus in his arduous, chaotic 10-year journey back from the Trojan war. On the road he meets all kinds of strange and dangerous creatures, only to return home and to be greeted by numerous suitors vying for the hand of his wife. Of course, regular Nolan devotees can probably already find areas of the story to speculate about when it comes to how his non-linear style may make itself felt.According to Universals tweet, we can (unsurprisingly) expect the movie to be shot on state of the art IMAX cameras arguably a Nolan staple at this point and to be shot across the world, in case you somehow thought Nolan was going to forgo his status as a stickler for location shooting on his biggest, oldest epic yet.The Odyssey is set to be released on July 17, 2026.
