The 10 best video games I played in 2024 Readers FeatureGameCentralPublished December 28, 2024 1:00am Tactical Breach Wizards an actual 2024 release (Suspicious Developments)A reader accepts that he cant keep up with every new release and reveals his favourite games of the year, the oldest of which came out in 2015.I realised long ago that trying to keep up with the huge number of new games released every year wasnt a battle I could win, so for the last decade or so Ive been quite happy to be a few years behind when it comes to gaming. Not only does it save me money, but you can also ensure you get the best possible experience with bugs having been patched and DLC often available. The only downside is that I cant really take part in any polls or discussions about game of the year. So, as an alternative, here are the top 10 games Ive played this year.10. Tactical Breach Wizards (2024)Tactical Breach Wizards is an engrossing turn-based tactics game with fun strategic gameplay, a genuinely humorous script and memorable characters. One of only three titles released in 2024 that I played this year, this is cracking little game that can be purchased for less than 15 on Steam.9. Super Mario Bros. Wonder (2023)Nintendos mainline Mario games have almost universally been of a very high standard, and Super Mario Bros. Wonder is no exception. The controls are incredibly precise and the levels full of the sort of variety and imagination youd expect. Personally, I do still prefer Super Mario Bros. 3 and Super Mario World, but if youre a fan of Nintendo and/or 2D platformers this is a must play.8. Cyberpunk 2077 (2020)I avoided Cyberpunk at launch for obvious reasons and then just pretty much forget about it until the DLC started to be advertised. Even with most of the bugs fixed its still not a perfect game by any means, but the detailed game world and excellent combat, that compliments the interesting and well written main and side missions, make it easy to ignore any minor issues and spend hours exploring Night City.7. Sifu (2022)Built around one of the most satisfying combat systems youll find in any game, and a unique mechanic in which your character ages each time you die, Sifu can be punishingly difficult at times, but the quality of the gameplay makes it worth the effort. The only slight negatives are the less than optimal camera, that doesnt always give a clear view of the action in tight spaces, and a frustrating difficulty spike with the final boss.6. Balatro (2024)Balatro is a deck-building roguelike in which you play a series of poker hands in order to beat a set score. As you progress you can level up hands and add powers to individual cards, so that you earn more points and higher multipliers. It doesnt quite offer the level of variety and challenge of Slay The Spire, but the intricately constructed systems and almost infinite combinations of modifiers and upgrades makes for a very addictive game.5. Frostpunk (2018)An entertaining and detailed city builder combined with an engrossing story full of difficulty morale decisions. Frostpunk is amongst the very best the genre has to offer, even if the lack of variability means it doesnt lend itself to more than a handful of playthroughs.4. Metal Gear Solid: The Phantom Pain (2015)I was a big fan of the Metal Gear Solid titles during the PlayStation 1 and 2 eras but following the disappointing Metal Gear Solid 4 the series fell of my radar. It therefore took me nearly a decade to finally get around the playing The Phantom Pain, but Im certainly glad I did. A far less linear experience than previous entries, that offers what is still arguably the deepest, most satisfying playground in which to play. Its a shame that well probably never see a Kojima lead Metal Gear game again3. Marvels Midnight Suns (2022)Sadly, Marvels Midnight Suns was pretty much a complete flop sales-wise, and thats a real shame because this really is an excellent game. Combining turn-based combat, deck-building, Marvel characters, and a Persona style friendship system into a coherent whole was no easy task, but Marvels Midnight Suns does it brilliantly and this is one title that deserved to find a bigger audience.2. Returnal (2021)Some of the runs can be a little too long, especially when combined with the high difficulty, which can see death strike at any moment, but its hard to think of a title with more satisfying shooting and movement. Whether playing solo or co-op, Returnal is arguably the best PlayStation 5 exclusive and essential for fans of roguelikes.1. Baldurs Gate 3 (2023)Divinity: Original Sin 2 remains one of my favourite games of all time, but Baldurs Gate 3 takes everything to the next level. Yes, the numerous mechanics and systems may be off-puttingly complex for some, but those that can wrap their heads around it will be rewarded with a role-playing game that arguably offers more depth and freedom than any other.Other games that came close to my top 10 were Stardew Valley (2016), Hitman: Season 2 (2018) Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice (2019), Life Is Strange: True Colors (2021), Tunic (2022), and Stacklands (2024).More TrendingId also like to give an honourable mention to Shadow Of The Erdtree DLC for Elden Ring. Yes, it offered more of the same thing, but when its as good as The Elden Ring its more than worth the time.By reader drlowdon Baldurs Gate 3 good no matter the release date (Larian Studios)The readers features do not necessarily represent the views of GameCentral or Metro. You can submit your own 500 to 600-word reader feature at any time, which if used will be published in the next appropriate weekend slot. The Best Streaming Shows and Movies You May Have Missed This Year
With numerous prominent TV shows and movies competing for viewers attention in 2024 through pricey advertising campaigns, inventive marketing efforts, omnipresent trailers inviting analysis, and countless hours of content to probe and differ online, it is easy for some media to slip through ones fingers. Whether its a word-of-mouth recommendation from a friend insisting a show is a hidden gem or an end-of-year article touting a quietly released flick as peak fiction, 2024 had much to offer that never received its moment in the spotlight. This article aims to correct that oversight. In that spirit, here is the io9 staffs list of deep-cut film and TV recommendations that flew under the radar this yearand are absolutely worth taking the time to seek out. A Shop for Killers Korean dramas are immensely popular, and A Shop for Killers is no exception. If one were to wonder what would happen if a John Wick-like character had to raise his niece and suddenly vanish when a group of disgruntled assassins besieged his house, leaving his seemingly unassuming little to defend herself with the skills her uncle imparted and a cache of high-grade weapons, this show provides that hyper-specific answer. If you are not captivated by the premiere episode of A Shop for Killerswhich features the niece outsmarting a sniper on an overpass miles away from their houseyou dont have a pulse. Beetlejuice (the animated series) This vintage cartoon resurfaced in tandem with Beetlejuice Beetlejuice mania, with Tubi stepping up to host the previously hard-to-stream series. Its so unhinged, delightfully gross, and endearing for a show thats 30 years old. It still holds up and is so easily binge-able.Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F Okay, were gonna cheat here for just a second because Beverly Hills Cop isnt an io9 movie. But it is a legacy sequel of a beloved franchise that brings back the star while passing the baton to a new generation. Which we seea lotin sci-fi and genre films. Were putting this on this list because out of all of those movies youre now thinking of (Star Wars, Scream, Ghostbusters, etc) Beverly Hills Cop 4lets just call it what it isis among the best. Its everything you loved about the franchise, but updated in smart, exciting ways. Its streaming on Netflix. The Camp Host Remember during the pandemic, when people stayed inside so much that nature started reclaiming its turf? A twisted interpretation of that idea propels this Tubi release, which follows a couple on a camping triptheir first outing after covid fears gave way to cabin feverwho discovers not everyone is excited about the end of social distancing. Also, the fact that its set at a campground is a big hint, but slasher rules do apply! The Camp Host Tubi Destroy All Neighbors We all know what its like to have an obnoxious neighbor. But most of us dont end up becoming best buddies with that neighbors severed head, or undertaking an odyssey that balances breakneck horror comedy with a deep, abiding love of prog rock. Destroy All Neighbors starts with a familiar idea, expands it into an outrageous premise, and pulls it off with sky-high energy. Thered be more splattery joy in the world if more people sought it out. Dimension 20: Junior Year Dropout is one of the best streaming services to have on your subscription list, and its Actual Play series Dimension 20 is a big part of why. The third installment in its Fantasy High sub-series is as funny and wild as previous seasons, and after years away from them, its nice to see the Bad Kids once again as they literally and metaphorically level up against new enemies. To quote a character late in the season: blimey! The First Slam Dunk Anime is cool. Competitive sports like basketball are cool. The First Slam Dunk, directed by manga creator Takehiko Inoue, is one of the best sport anime films to grace the silver screen. Not only does this film prove once again that CG anime can be a looker, it also caps one of the best basketball anime in a way that you dont need to have watched it so many years ago, to have its story make you want to pump your fist in the air and yell, Hell yeah! Invincible Hit Girl In many ways, the pageantry of professional wrestling resembles a redneck anime soap opera. Embracing this notion, Adult Swims sleeper hit animated series Invincible Fight Girl captures the intestinal fortitude of professional wrestling and presents an inspiring story of a girl named Andy who abandons her monotonous desk job to become the worlds greatest wrestler. For all anime connoisseurs, this show evokes nostalgia reminiscent of Cartoon Network classics like Mucha Lucha while delivering the stunning animation quality of your favorite anime fight scenes. Give it a watch to help secure a second season, why dont ya?Invincible Hit Girl Adult Swim Its Whats Inside Its a shame that one of the best genre movies of the year got mostly buried on Netflix but such is the world we live in. Its Whats Inside is one of those intense, twisty-turny thrillers you want to watch again the second the credits start to roll. Which is a benefit of being on Netflix, we guess. The film has a super unique, surprising premise that its almost a sin to spoil so lets just say its kind of Freaky Friday meets Clue. Yeah. That works. Its awesome. Kaiju No. 8 Sometimes we all just need a TV show about a sweet himbo of a man turning into a superpowered man-monster and punching the everloving bejesus out of even bigger monsters. Good news then, because Kaiju No. 8s animated adaptation of the similarly over-the-top manga is worth every second of a binge-watch. The action is as fun and wild as youd hope for, but its really the earnest charm of its protagonist, the aforementioned himbo Kafka Hibino, that make it such a delight to watch.Kaos Jeff Goldblum as Zeus, king of the gods? Enough said. The funny and chaotically dark Netflix show is very much for the mythology nerds as well as a not-to-miss modern adaptation of the lore. Unfortunately it did not get renewed for season two, but the first season at least is a solid standalone story. Look Back It was a difficult task trying to catch this incredible adaptation of Chainsaw Mancreator Tatsuki Fujimotos one-shot manga in theaters this year, which might just mean you missed out on seeing what might be one of the best animated movies of all 2024. A wonderfully bittersweet and human meditation on art, and how it draws people together,Look Backuses the magic of making comics to deliver a short, sharp, and endlessly emotional celebration of the form, even as it excels in transforming the medium in its adaptive leap to big-screen animation. Look Back GKids / Studio Durian Madame Web Madame Web is not a movie one would consider an all-time classic, but it certainly is a camp one in the making. A weird, messy, hilarious (more in a way of how it comes together rather than perhaps fully intentionally) ode to a different era of superheroic moviemaking, its a perfectly silly thing to at least try giving a watch once. Whos to say her web wont connect with you now, if you missed out on it in theaters? Music by John Williams For decades, seeing the name John Williams anywhere near a movie has instantly made it better. And this documentary, streaming on Disney+, is kind of like all of those combined into one. It not only gives you context about where Williams came from and his career, but breaks down so many of his iconic scores. Movies like Jaws, Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Jurassic Park, and many others. Think of it like a greatest hits album, but as a movie. Oddity Irish writer-director Damien McCarthys horror indie won an Audience Award at South by Southwest, but it flew under the radar even when it hit Shudder in late September with word-of-mouth tagging it as one of the scariest movies of the year. Thats not just empty hype.Odditycenters on a blind psychic who runs a curio shop full of cursed objectsand who draws on all her available resources to tease out her twin sisters murderer. Jump scares? Yes. Slow-burn dread? Yes. Imagery you wont be able to un-see?Hellyes.Oddity Shudder PBS Retro Launched in 2024, the PBS Retro channel quickly became a hidden gem on various TV and streaming devices. It features favorites like Mister Rogers Neighborhood and Reading Rainbow. Like the Bob Ross channel also on those platforms, it plays marathons of nostalgic educational content if you want to zen out or show your kids more thoughtful programming than the drivel that is Cocomelon. We stumbled across this channel in the free programming on Vizio but if you go to PBS.org or the free PBS app you can find a way to access original shows on your smartphone, tablets, and televisions. The Shadow Strays Director Timo Tjajahnto has been making movies at a consistent clip since 2012, and his newest outing was this years Shadow Strays. With an incredible physical turn from Aurora Ribero in the lead role and one crunchy action scene after another, its absolutely worth taking the time to watch on Netflix. By the end of it, youll be wanting more, which is just as well, since Tjajahnto clearly wants to do more. Ultraman Rising There arent a lot of superhero movies explicitly about parenting, which gave Netflixs Ultraman Rising a unique way to stand out among the crowd. It plays all the parenting hits extremely well, but its all made fresh through the inventiveness of its hero Ken Sato using his powers to parent a baby monsterand by how incredible it looks. It may have been a streaming movie, but youll wish you couldve seen it on a big screen. Want more io9 news? Check out when to expect the latest Marvel, Star Wars, and Star Trek releases, whats next for the DC Universe on film and TV, and everything you need to know about the future of Doctor Who.

IRS Signals a Coming Crackdown on Gig Workers
By Todd Feathers Published December 27, 2024 | Comments (1) | New IRS rules governing gig workers went into effect this year. Zach Gibson/Getty Images In a sign that the Internal Revenue Service could be cracking down on gig workers, the agency has received authorization from a federal court to gather information from JustAnswer LLC about any U.S. taxpayers who received compensation through the platform. California federal District Court Judge Dolly Gee approved the agencys request for what is known as a John Doe summons, which seeks information about a group of individuals whom the the government hasnt already identified by name or other means. The summons seeks information about people who received $5,000 or more for answering questions on the JustAnswer platform in any one year from 2017 through 2020. The gig economy has grown in recent years and with it, the concern for tax compliance issues has increased, Deputy Assistant Attorney General David Hubbert said in a Department of Justice press release. This John Doe summons demonstrates that working with the IRS we will use all the tools available to us to ensure that no matter how U.S. taxpayers earn income, they are properly reporting it and paying their taxes. Those who choose to be on the forefront of the gig economy must be aware of, and abide by, all their tax obligations. JustAnswer did not immediately respond to a request for comment.Precise data about gig workers is hard to come by given the decentralized and varied nature of the work. But surveys of workers have shown that many participants in the gig economy earn less than minimum wage in the state where they work. While the DOJ and IRS did not indicate that they were seeking John Doe summonses for other platforms, the press release did name-check several other gig-working platforms, including Airbnb, Uber, Lyft, DoorDash, and Etsy.In November, the IRS issued new guidance to gig work platforms instructing them to report information to the agency about taxpayers who earned more than $5,000 in 2024, more than $2,500 in 2025, and more than $600 in 2026 and beyond. Previously, gig platforms only had to report information to the IRS for workers who earned more than $20,000 and completed at least 200 transactions. The new thresholds are designed to make it harder for gig workers to avoid paying taxes on their income.Like their fellow Americans who earn income through traditional means, U.S. taxpayers who earn income from digital and other platforms that comprise the gig economy need to pay their fair share of taxes, IRS Commissioner Danny Werfel said in a statement. The world is getting smaller for tax cheats, and we will work collaboratively with our partners to vigorously enforce the nations tax laws.Daily NewsletterYou May Also Like By Matt Novak Published December 13, 2024 By Kyle Barr Published December 5, 2024 By Thomas Maxwell Published November 3, 2024 By Thomas Maxwell Published November 2, 2024 By Lucas Ropek Published October 2, 2024 By Lucas Ropek Published September 18, 2024

It was on a Japanese ski trip that the owners of this Wanaka house came to appreciate the efficiency of small spaces. Staying in a compact two-bedroom vacation home in the mountains, they saw that a small, carefully designed house could be comfortable and pleasant to live in. Based in Singapore, the family of five took annual trips to Wanaka, usually staying with extended family in an existing four bedroom house on this lakeside site. The idea for Sugi House was conceived to allow for a degree of separation on their trips.Save this picture!Save this picture! After seeing the Kirimoko Tiny House by Condon Scott Architects, the homeowners engaged architect Barry Condon to bring their new holiday house to life. To Barry, delivering on a Japanese aesthetic meant creating something simple and unobtrusive. "The aim was for a refined, precise and crafted aesthetic. We have used this mindset throughout, allocating only as much space as is required to each function. The timber panelling and alignment has been carefully thought through to extend the sense of space indoors."Save this picture! The floorplan is tight but carefully considered. The lower floor contains a double-height living and kitchen space separated from the kids' bathroom and bedroom by the staircase. Upstairs is a double bedroom with ensuite, an office and storage. "Built-in storage spaces were optimised including shoe racks, hidden cupboards, draws within the steps of the stairs, and built-in shelving in the upstairs loft," says Barry. The interiors deliver on the requested Japanese, minimalist look, with black fittings and joinery contrasted against the timber linings, a sculptural ceiling fan, and flush cabinetry. The wet room style of the compact bathroom is reminiscent of a Japanese spa with floor to ceiling, stone-look tiles.Save this picture! The house also has a strong materiality externally, with a singular cladding and roofing material of warm cedar shingles, which has the added benefit of being low maintenance. As the house faces the street, glazing is restrained and aimed towards views to the west of Mt Roy. The southern facade is free of windows to prevent the gaze of neighbours as they approach from the access way.Save this picture!"With some judicious planting on the street, we made the outdoor terrace area quite private, an extension of the living space in the summer with the doors open," says Barry. Due to a high level of insulation and the small footprint of the house, a Stovax wood fire provides enough heating to cut through even the chilliest of Wanaka's winter days. The house was constructed using SIPS panels, with some Passive House techniques employed.Save this picture!Save this picture!"SIPs are taped, sealed and wrapped in a secondary layer of building wrap plus plywood to maximise thermal efficiency," says Barry. "The house and the areas of glazing are orientated to maximise solar gain, with minimal openings on the remaining sides of the house to preserve the thermal envelope. Windows are double glazed low-e glass, argon filled and thermally broken to prevent moisture retention and heat loss."Save this picture! The result is a relaxing and stylish home-away-from-home for this jet-setting family, a place to comfortably reconnect with their loved ones on the other side of the world.Save this picture!Project gallerySee allShow lessAbout this officeMaterialWoodMaterials and TagsPublished on December 28, 2024Cite: "Sugi House / Condon Scott Architects" 27 Dec 2024. The Best Games Where Permadeath Is An Optional Mechanic
Dying in video games is often inconsequential or a minor inconvenience, with players merely respawning or restarting at the most recent checkpoint and carrying on as if nothing had happened. It can be annoying losing some progress or having to retry a difficult section, but it acts as a safety net and means that players can continue relatively unharmed.

    The Best Anime Crossover Games
Like the rest of the world, Japan was fascinated by animation in the early 20th century. They saw people like Winsor McCay and Walt Disney('s staff) bringing cartoon figures to life and thought they should give it a try too. There were a few early shorts that still survive today, like 1917's The Dull Sword, but to the rest of the world, Japanese animation came into its own during the post-war era when the likes of Astro Boy and Speed Racer started catching on.

10-in-1 USB-C Hub with Shortcut Keys and Knob is the Ultimate Combo of Power, Ports, and Productivity
Picture the average multi-device setup. A laptop, a mouse, maybe a monitor, and a dock for charging your phone/smartwatch/earbuds. As fairly simple as this sounds, it involves multiple products and multiple wires connecting them. The more devices, the more wires, and the more the promise of productivity without actual productivity. Dongles were born to solve this problem by streamlining cables, but the HubKey does more than most dongles can. The 10-in-1 compact device not only houses multiple ports it comes with its own control panel too, letting you quickly access functions/controls through four intuitive buttons and one satisfyingly large rotary knob.Think of it as your personal command station, set to tackle the daily juggle of multiple tasks and devices. Rather than fumbling with random adapters, you have a 10-in-1 hub that supports 4K@60Hz, 100W fast charging, Ethernet, SD/TF card reading, and more. But the real kicker is its built-in buttons and knob. These let you lock screens, snap screenshots, or tweak volume in seconds, keeping your workflow smooth and intuitive.Designer: HubKeyClick Here to Buy Now: $69 $140 (51% off) Hurry! Only 300 Units Left!At first glance, the HubKey might seem like yet another dongle, but it quickly reveals a more thoughtful edge. By grouping ports and user commands in one solid package, it reduces desktop chaos. Gone are the days of rummaging for a single adapter or wrestling with on-screen controls. A simple press locks your computer, a knob twist tunes audio, a port gives you ethernet access, another controls your 4K display, and a slot lets you quickly draw media from an SD card. Its a synergy that actually fulfils the promise of productivity by giving you crucial tools and features in one singular hub. Those five shortcut keys instantly elevate the experience. Maybe youre the type who takes endless screenshots for design references, or you love toggling your display off for quick breaks. Each key is there to save precious seconds one for locking your machine, one for toggling your monitor, another for quick screenshots, and a fourth button for RGB backlighting. Meanwhile, the knob delivers a tactile sense of control seldom found in standard hubs. Rather than pausing to hunt down software sliders, you can stay focused, adjusting volume or lighting with intuitive fluidity. Setting up the HubKey feels like removing friction from your workflow because theres no need for special drivers or fussy software.Alongside these controls, the 4K@60Hz HDMI port shines for visual tasks and entertainment alike. Designers get crisp details for pixel-perfect edits, while film buffs see vibrant imagery. Theres also a 1000Mbps Ethernet jack, ensuring stable internet for big downloads or glitch-free video calls. Add in the SD/TF card slots, and photographers or content creators benefit immensely from the HubKey, giving them a dedicated dongle for juggling media between cameras, drones, action-cams, and editing machines like a laptop or desktop. For those who crave speed, the 100W PD charging port zaps your laptop back to life in record time. No more lugging an extra charger. USB 3.0 ports deliver up to 5Gbps, letting you transfer files in seconds. You can run resource-heavy processes on your device or game on a Steam Deck without worrying about battery depletion. Gamers, remote workers, and creative pros all benefit from the HubKeys high-performance approach. Oh, and theres even a 3.5mm audio input for gaming or teleconferencing headsets!Despite its robust features, the HubKey remains compact. It nestles easily in a laptop bag, making it a lifeline for digital nomads who bounce between coworking spaces or coffee shops. The aluminum alloy housing dissipates heat and endures travel, while a neon LED strip adds a dash of personality. Whether youre into a cyberpunk glow or a more neutral tone, this accent brings a spark of creativity to your environment serving gamers, designers, and video-editing professionals alike. For privacy buffs, a dedicated screen-lock shortcut offers quick protection in crowded environments. You can duck away from your laptop without fretting over prying eyes. The Mac versus Windows nuance is straightforward: short presses for Windows, longer presses for Mac. Its another illustration of how HubKey caters to varying workflows. No matter the platform, these features encourage a fluid approach to computing, banishing friction and keeping inspiration front and center.Behind every feature lies a story of testing, revising, and collaborating with real users. The developers explored different port layouts, adjusted button sensitivity, and refined the overall weight to accommodate on-the-go workers. Photographers wanted rapid SD reads, gamers demanded reliable LAN stability, and designers favored crisp external displays all of which eventually led to the genesis of the HubKey.The HubKey ships globally and starts at $69 for early bird backers, with the product finally costing $140 when it hits retail shelves. Its designed to work seamlessly with both Windows and Mac devices, although while Windows users can simply tap the buttons to toggle their functions, Mac users will have to long-press the button instead. Thats a fairly small trade-off, if you ask me, also considering the fact that the HubKey is Steam Deck-compatible too, making it perfect for pretty much everything from regular work to leisure, gaming, video-editing, graphic design, photography, or any other form of multitasking that requires quick-access controls and multiple high-performance ports.Click Here to Buy Now: $69 $140 (51% off) Hurry!
