LG's new UltraGear lineup includes a bendable 5K OLED
As is tradition, LG is announcing several of its new OLED monitors before CES 2025 kickoffs in earnest. The new UltraGear GX9 series all feature curved WOLED panels, webOS and an anti-glare, low reflection coating that should make them pleasant to look at wherever your desk is stationed.LG is positioning the 45GX990A or LG UltraGear OLED Bendable Gaming Monitor as the star of this new lineup. It's a 45-inch, 5K2K bendable screen that can move "from completely flat to a 900R curvature within seconds," according to LG. Like the 32-inch UltraGear OLED LG introduced in 2023, this new model has the company's Dual Mode feature for quickly toggling between resolutions and refresh rates with the push of a button, along with a 0.03ms GtG response time for smoother visuals when you do decide to play games.LGIf you'd prefer a screen that doesn't move, the LG UltraGear OLED Gaming Monitor (45GX950A) gives you the same 45-inches of screen real estate along with a 21:9 format, 5K2K resolution, and ultra slim bezels. LG says the monitor also supports DisplayPort 2.1, HDMI2.1 and USB-C with 90W power delivery, and certified to work with AMD FreeSync and NVIDIA G-Sync.For a smaller (and likely more affordable) option, the LG UltraGear 39GX90SA still gets you a curved display, but in a 39-inch size with a 21:9 aspect ratio. The monitors OLED panel means you'll get "nuanced colors and deep, dark blacks," according to LG, and the multiple USB-C ports means you'll actually be able to connect the 39GX90SA to multiple devices at once. Having a smaller option might be a good thing too finding extra desk space for last year's LG 49 UltraGear gaming monitor was one of the biggest problems with it.This article originally appeared on Engadget at https://www.engadget.com/computing/accessories/lgs-new-ultragear-lineup-includes-a-bendable-5k-oled-010028431.html?src=rss

This Olive Oil Mill Museum Is As Surreal And Unusual As A Building Gets
French architect Philippe Starck recently designed a red cube to accommodate the LA Almazara olive mill museum and restaurant in Andalusia. It has been adorned with symbols connecting to the regions heritage. The building is surrounded by groves on a 25-hectare estate near Rona and was created for oil producer LA Organic as an initiative to boost oleo tourism tourism based on olive oil production. The building is decorated with huge symbols that celebrate the magic and poetry of the area. It includes a bulls horn in Corten steel and a carved eye symbolizing the areas connection with the surrealist movement.Designer: Philippe StarckLA Almazara itself is surrounded by acres of olive groves, bathed in powerful and warm lights of Andalusia. This gives a sense of the radicality I had to come up with for the project. Everything had to be out of the ordinary, out-of-scale, a little strange, and surrealist. The place is full of fertile surprises that reflect Andalusian symbols, said Starck. On the outside, it is a huge monolithic red block, as if fallen from the sky, added Starck. An enormous eye at the facade illustrates the vigilance of the great Andalusian surrealist artists, the smoke that emanates from it is surrealist and reflects mystery. The interior of the building is intended to be an inhabitable work of art. It includes a restaurant area which is placed under a suspended metal pipe and funnel that reference the production of oil, and a wing-like form which symbolizes the Andalusian scientist that was supposed to be the first human to fly.The space includes a small seating area placed around a fireplace. The fireplace is situated below an oversized bullfighting sword that leans against the wall. This leads to a terrace that cantilevers from the building and seems to be supported by huge metal chains. It offers views of the surrounding landscape, creating an intriguing contrast against the buildings dark interior. The building contains other two floors as well which hold a museum space and facilities of the production of extra virgin olive oil. It is also surrounded by walking trails on the outside, as well as sculptures by Starck and some other visitor facilities. As soon as you enter, you are struck by the contrast in lights. In the building, it is dark and cool, to respect and enhance the delicate process of olive oil production, said Starck. Yet the inside shadows hold strong symbols as well, such as monumental half-olive embedded in the rusty steel wall, a metal pipe penetrating the building without ever coming out, he concluded. The post This Olive Oil Mill Museum Is As Surreal And Unusual As A Building Gets first appeared on Yanko Design.

LGs 2025 gaming monitor lineup includes a bendable 5K2K OLED
LGs 2025 gaming monitor lineup includes a bendable 5K2K OLEDLGs 2025 gaming monitor lineup includes a bendable 5K2K OLED / The UltraGear GX9 series features two 45-inch monitors that LG claims are a great fit for both gaming and productivity.By Chris Welch, a reviewer specializing in personal audio and home theater. Since 2011, he has published nearly 6,000 articles, from breaking news and reviews to useful how-tos. Dec 30, 2024, 1:00 AM UTCShare this story Image: LGLG isnt waiting until CES begins to reveal its new collection of gaming monitors. The 2025 lineup is led by the UltraGear OLED Bendable Gaming Monitor, which LG claims is the worlds first 5K2K-resolution bendable OLED display. That strikes me as extremely specific, but hey, its always worth bragging when youre first, I suppose. The 45-inch monitor has an expansive resolution of 5120x2160, so youre getting the same vertical pixel count as a typical 4K screen but a much wider canvas to game on.And with a 21:9 aspect ratio, LG believes it provides a immersive gaming experience than standard 16:9 displays, while maintaining better content compatibility than 32:9 monitors. This format also makes the display a great fit for productivity work when youre not immersed in gameplay. The UltraGear OLED Bendable Gaming Monitor (model 45GX990A) can transition from completelyflat to a 900R curvature, and the latest version of LGs Dual-Mode feature allows users to switch effortlessly between resolution and refresh rate presets, and customize theaspect ratio and picture size. Its certified for Nvidia G-Sync and AMD FreeSync Premium Pro, but the press materials dont specify a maximum refresh rate. Ive asked for more details there. Both 45-inch monitors have a 5K2K resolution of 5120x2160. Image: LGLG is also releasing a non-bendable model with a permanent 800R curve. Otherwise, its the same 45-inch size, same aspect ratio, and same 5K2K resolution. LGs press release says you can expect sharp, lifelike images with the stunning colors and exceptional contrast LG OLED products are known for. Shared specs between both monitors include a 0.03ms (GtG) response time and support for DisplayPort 2.1, HDMI 2.1, and USB-C with 90W power delivery. The 45GX950A uses a RGWB subpixel layout to improve readability of text on the screen and make the aforementioned productivity work easier on your eyes. Along with these two monitors, LG is also introducing the curved UltraGear 39GX90SA, a webOS-powered home entertainment hub with easy access to streaming services just like LGs TVs. It seems like the company has taken some cues from Samsungs smart monitors here. At 39 inches, this ones a bit smaller than the other GX9 displays, but it retains the 21:9 aspect ratio and 800R curve. Equipped with USB Type-C ports, it offers convenient connectivity, and incorporates LGs ergonomic and space-saving L-shaped stand for a clutter-free desk setup, LG said in tonights press release. As per usual with CES news, pricing and a specific release date are still to come later in 2025. But well be getting our first in-person look at the UltraGear GX9 series in Las Vegas, so stay tuned for impressions early next month along with an avalanche of stunning screens from many other companies, too. Most PopularMost Popular

B-STAR: A Self-Taught AI Reasoning Framework for LLMs
A direct correlation exists between an LLMs training corpus quality and its capabilities. Consequently, researchers have invested a great deal of effort into curating extensive, high-quality datasets, which, at present, are achievable with craftful human annotations. Man-made datasets, however, have one downside: their reliance becomes increasingly unsustainable as complexity grows. Many methods have been worked upon to address this, and one such notion is the idea of self-improvement, providing more scalable and cost-effective solutions. It is a continual process where the loop runs until the generated responses are refined. Self-improvement thereby does away with the need for extensive human data. While Self-improvement is undoubtedly a promising phenomenon, and its implementation testifies to its rapid development, our shallow understanding of it cant be overlooked either. Many self-improvement strategies launched fail in scalability and saturate after three to five iterations. We still lack a deep understanding of the key factors and bottlenecks that drive successful self-improvement. Not only this, but we dont even know why the internal optimization mechanisms remain primarily opaque. In their recent paper, researchers from The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology have identified and proposed methods to monitor the pivotal factors of iterative self-improvement. The authors recognized two dynamic yet crucial factors affecting the improvement process: exploration and exploitation. Exploration refers to the models ability to generate correct and diverse responses. On the other hand, exploitation determined the effectiveness of external rewards in selecting high-quality solutions. The authors presented empirical evidence to confirm that these capabilities may lead growth to stagnate or decline. Further conflicts between the two undermine the models performance. In response to the above issues, the research team proposedBalanced Self-Taught Reasoner, B-STAR: a novel approach for self-improvement to monitor and balance these dynamic factors and optimize the current policy and reward use. They presented a new metric balance score to adjust the configurations of sampling temperature and reward thresholds in the training process. Balance Score assesses the potential of a query based on the models exploration and exploitation capabilities. B-STAR then maximizes the average balance score by dynamically adjusting configurations to balance the above forces.Balance Score captures the interplay of two capabilities by measuring the overall contribution of the synthetic data in training. The metric is designed to have a high number and proportion of high-quality responses. Authors then manipulate this score through hyperparameter configurations.B-STAR was tested against mathematical problems, coding challenges, and common sense reasoning tasks. Results from these experiments showed that B-STAR effectively steered the model towards correct responses and thereby consistently achieved higher scores. B-STAR also yielded higher quality responses, confirming its enhanced exploration capacity. The proposed method maintained a substantial growth rate , unlike other baselines, which slowed down and stagnated. As per the experiments conducted in the paper, lower temperatures were preferred initially and then were subsequently increased to account for the models shifting limitations during training. The opposite is followed in reward threshold selection, where high rewards are set up initially to ensure rigorous filtering on a weak model.Conclusion-: B-STAR captured the interplay of exploration and exploitation capabilities and presented a simple method of hyperparameter configuration with a novel metric to balance factors above and improve performance in the self-improvement process. This paper lays the foundation for advanced research in decoding exploration and exploitation to maximize the quality of generated responses.Check out the Paper and GitHub. SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. (KGO) -- The parents of a former OpenAI researcher who was found dead in a San Francisco apartment have hired an independent investigator to determine his cause of death. He was known for being a whistleblower.Mercury News reported the new updates after police found the body of 26-year-old Suchir Balaji on November 26 during a well-being check. The Medical Examiner says Balaji died by suicide and there are no signs of foul play, but his parents Poornima Ramarao and Balaji Ramamurthy have doubts and have hired an expert to perform an independent autopsy.RELATED: Ex-OpenAI engineer who raised legal concerns about the technology he helped build has diedBalaji died just three months after publicly accusing OpenAI of violating U.S. copyright law while developing ChatGPT.His information was expected to play a key part in lawsuits against the company.OpenAI has said all of its work is legal under fair use laws.Balaji worked at OpenAI for nearly four years before quitting in August. He was well-regarded by colleagues at the San Francisco company, where a co-founder this week called him one of OpenAI's strongest contributors who was essential to developing some of its products."We are devastated to learn of this incredibly sad news and our hearts go out to Suchir's loved ones during this difficult time," said a statement from OpenAI.His parents said they are still seeking answers, describing their son as a "happy, smart and brave young man" who loved to hike and recently returned from a trip with friends.Balaji grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area and first arrived at the fledgling AI research lab for a 2018 summer internship while studying computer science at the University of California, Berkeley. He returned a few years later to work at OpenAI, where one of his first projects, called WebGPT, helped pave the way for ChatGPT.If you or someone you know may be experiencing a mental health crisis, call or text the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline at 988.The Associated Press contributed to this report
