  • CNBC's new streaming service can cost up to $600 a year
    www.engadget.com
CNBC is getting in on the streaming game with a service called CNBC+. The platform will have a global livestream with financial news happening in the US, UK and Asian markets. Subscribers can also watch full show episodes on demand. The service is available via iOS and Android apps or on cnbc.com.According to Variety, CNBC announced the news and pricing plans for CNBC+ on January 1 in an email to people who had signed up for the network's digital offerings. Seems odd to announce a brand new property intended for business and financial professionals on a day when most companies are closed. CNBC is also one of the properties current owner Comcast is planning to spin off into a new company, which makes this a potentially challenging time for the network to launch an expensive new endeavor. And expensive is the key word. Not only is it costly to run a digital platform like this, but CNBC+ also doesn't come cheap for viewers. A regular subscription will cost $15 a month, while the Pro tier bundles in additional stock ratings and picks as well as a My Portfolio feature for $35 a month or $300 a year. For the truly committed fans, there is also an All Access plan that includes participation in an online investment club led by CNBC personality Jim Cramer. That plan costs a staggering $600 annually. This isn't the first time cable news has tried a streaming standalone. Warner Bros. Discovery launched a CNN+ service in March 2022, only to immediately pull the plug mere weeks later. We'll see if CNBC+ can last longer. This article originally appeared on Engadget at https://www.engadget.com/entertainment/streaming/cnbcs-new-streaming-service-can-cost-up-to-600-a-year-211554221.html?src=rss

  • U.S. prepares for deepest winter cold in over a decade
    www.fastcompany.com
A large portion of the U.S. is about to get hit with some frigid temperatures, which experts are calling the first polar vortex of 2025. Around two-thirds of the country will experience the coldest cold snaps so far this winter, with temperatures reaching dangerously low points. For much of the country, the weather will be making an extreme shift, going from temperatures well above the seasonal average to well below. According to Accuweathers Lead Long-Range Expert Paul Pastelok, many parts of the country could even experience the coldest January since 2011. And the frigid temperatures may not let up until February.Experts say the cold will come in two stages, with back-to-back blasts of freezing weather, coupled with bitter wind. The first blast should arrive shortly after New Years Day, with temperatures beginning to fall from the Rocky Mountains all the way to the East Coast starting on Thursday, Jan. 2.Some of the first subzero F temperatures will occur over parts of the northern Plains late this week, then will back off, Pastelok said. The colder weather will come with potential for a wintery mix for the New England area. However, the second cold snap, from Jan. 6 through the 14th, could bring powerful winter storms to other parts of the country. Experts say this dive in temperatures will be the most brutal. And some areas, like the Southeast, are expected to see temperatures far below average.Below freezing temperatures are possible as far south as the Gulf Coast and much of the Florida Peninsula, the National Weather Services Climate Prediction Center warned on X (formerly Twitter). Impacts to highly sensitive citrus crops are possible. Last year, when colder temperatures hit Florida, frozen iguanas could be seen falling from trees, as the cold-blooded animals struggled to maintain their body temperature. For the unhoused, as well as those without heat, this kind of cold can create terrifying conditions. According to the US Department of Housing and Urban Development, homelessness saw a dramatic rise in 2024, meaning, this year, more people could be at risk of death from frigid weather. Already, deaths linked to cold weather have more than doubled since 1999.

  • Musks Kekius Maximus persona deepens his alignment with Trumps far-right base
    www.fastcompany.com
Elon Musk has raised eyebrows with a change to his handle on X (formerly Twitter), adopting the name Kekius Maximus. Along with this name change, Musk also updated his profile image to feature Pepe the Frog, a meme that has been associated with various far-right movements. The move has prompted discussions about Musks ties to digital currencies and the controversial symbolism tied to the meme. The Meaning of Kekius MaximusThe name Kekius Maximus appears to be a combination of two cultural references. Kek started inWorld of Warcraftas a translation of LOL between game factions and later became an internet meme tied to Pepe the Frog.Maximus is a reference to the character Maximus Decimus Meridius from the movie Gladiator. The name is also linked to a cryptocurrency memecoin, KEKIUS, which saw its value increase by over 800% following Musks profile update. In addition to the name change, Musk posted an image of Pepe the Frog dressed in Roman armor, holding a video game controller. Controversy surrounding Pepe the Frog and kekWhile Pepe the Frog was initially created by artist Matt Furie as a benign character, it has been adopted by various extremist factions, particularly during the 2016 U.S. presidential election. Kek, originally used as an internet shorthand for LOL, has similarly been appropriated by far-right communities, including those associated with the creation of a fictional nation called Kekistan. These symbols, once seen as harmless internet humor, have increasingly been linked to online trolling, white nationalism, and conspiracy theories. The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) has highlighted the continued spread of such symbols, noting their association with far-right movements despite efforts to reclaim them.[Photo: X]Musks controversial associationsMusks use of these symbols prompts questions about his ties to far-right groups. The entrepreneur has previously been linked to politically contentious figures and causes, such as his support for the far-right German political party Alternative for Germany (AfD) and his promotion of conspiracy theories like the great replacement theory.

  • New Jersey offshore wind project cant find anyone to build its wind turbine blades
    www.fastcompany.com
A New Jersey offshore wind project is seeking a second delay, saying it still cant find someone to build crucial equipment for the turbines in the latest patch of turbulence striking the industry.Leading Light Wind had already received one pause on its project from the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities, which acknowledged the difficulty the project has had in finding a manufacturer for the blades that would spin to generate electricity. But that pause ended on Dec. 20. The day before, Leading Light asked the board for an additional stay, this time through May 20.It did not specify an inability to find a blade manufacturer as the reason for needing a second delay, but its most recent request said, The offshore wind equipment market continues to experience significant price volatility and the company has not yet identified a solution to that volatility. The company did not respond to inquiries on Monday and Tuesday about whether a blade manufacturer is at the heart of the second request. This additional time will allow us to continue to navigate ongoing market shifts and supply chain challenges, as we work to advance development of this important project for New Jersey, Wes Jacobs, the project director, said in a statement. The board could not estimate when it might consider the request. The project, from Chicago-based Invenergy and New York-based energyRE, would be built 40 miles (65 kilometers) off Long Beach Island and would consist of up to 100 turbines, enough to power one million homes.Leading Light was one of two projects the state utilities board chose in January 2024. But just three weeks after that approval, one of three major turbine manufacturers, GE Vernova, said it would not build the kind of turbine Invenergy planned to use in the project, according to a public filing.A turbine made by manufacturer Vestas was deemed unsuitable for the project, and the remaining manufacturer, Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy, told Invenergy in June that it was increasing the cost of its turbine, Invenergy said.Invenergy said it has invested millions of dollars into the project and remains committed to it. The project must pay $105 million toward the cost of a facility to build monopiles, the tower-like foundations of wind turbines, in Paulsboro.Opponents of offshore wind seized on the new request as more proof the industry is not economically feasible, particularly with Donald Trump, an offshore wind foe, soon to return to the White House. We can only draw one logical conclusion: the Trump administration threatens the lifeblood of the offshore wind industry, namely, large government subsidies and less regulation, the group Protect Our Coast NJ said in a statement. There are currently two other preliminarily approved offshore wind projects in New Jersey.Attentive Energy Two would be built 42 miles (67 kilometers) off Seaside Heights and would not be visible from the shoreline. It is a joint venture between Paris-based TotalEnergies and London-based Corio Generation and would power over 650,000 homes.Atlantic Shores, a joint partnership between Shell New Energies US LLC and EDF-RE Offshore Development LLC, would generate enough energy to power 700,000 homes. The federal government says the project would be about 8.7 miles (14 kilometers) from the shore at its closest point. The company has previously said the closest turbines will be at least 12.8 miles (20 kilometers) from shore. Some observers say it might not be easy to completely thwart the industry, particularly projects that are already operating or that have received the required government approvals.Paulina OConnor, executive director of the New Jersey Offshore Wind Alliance, said the industrys future is promising. There is no shortage of challenges to advancing a new industry through market-wide shifts, but the fundamentals of offshore wind in New Jersey remain strong, she said.By Wayne Parry, Associated Press
