WWW.POPSCI.COMHow to read text from images on WindowsWindows has tools for grabbing text from images. Image: Surface/UnsplashShareThere are all kinds of reasons why you might want to extract text out of images. Maybe youve taken photos of restaurant bills and you want to make a record of what youve eaten; or perhaps youve got a bunch of screenshots that you need to get product names out of; or you could have scanned in some important documents that need sorting.Whatever the reason, Windows comes with built-in tools for picking out text from image files (technically known as OCR, or Optical Character Recognition)in fact, there are several different ways, so you can pick the one that suits you best. Heres how to get started, assuming you already have your images saved somewhere. You can extract text with the Snipping Tool. Screenshot: Microsoft The Snipping Tool is the easiest way to extract text from images on Windows. You can launch the utility from the Start menu, either by searching for it or by finding it on the full list of apps. Once youve got the program open, click the three dots (top right), choose Open file, and pick the image you want to work with. With the image on screen, click the Text actions button on the toolbarit looks like a series of lines with a frame around it. After a few moments of thinking, youll see the Snipping Tool highlight all of the text in the image, while the rest of the picture fades out.Youve got a couple of options here: You can click and drag across any of the highlighted text to select it, and then copy it to the clipboard (and from there to another app): So you could, for example, drag the cursor across an address in an image, then press Ctrl+C to send it to the keyboard, and Ctrl+V to paste it into another Windows program.Your other option is to click the Copy all text button on the toolbar at the topthis sends all the text in the picture to the clipboard, so you dont need to spend time selecting it all manually. Use the arrow next to Quick redact on the toolbar to to exclude email addresses and phone numbers from the selection. When youre done with your text manipulations, you can click the Text actions button again to remove the highlighting and go back to the normal editing view. All of these actions are available when you capture a screenshot with the Snipping Tool tooso you could, for example, grab a screenshot of a webpage, then extract all the text from it.Other Windows optionsThe Text Extractor tool in Microsoft PowerToys. Screenshot: Microsoft The Snipping Tool can take care of most of your OCR needs on Windows, but its not the only option available to you. Microsoft has put a similar set of text extraction features in two of its other programs, and while you will have to download these separately, they wont cost you anything to use.First up theres OneNote, which you can download. Its a comprehensive note-taking and organization tool, which you can use to bring together text, images, web links and drawings in digital collections called notebooks. To drop an image into a notebook, click Insert > Pictures on the toolbar, or paste something from the clipboard.Extracting text from an image is then as simple as right-clicking on it, then choosing Copy Text from Picture. All of the text detected in the image is sent to the clipboard, and you can paste it into another app with Ctrl+V (you cant select specific parts of the text in the image, but you can once youve pasted it somewhere else).Second, youve got PowerToys, which is a suite of Windows utilities that Microsoft releases separately from the main operating system: You can download the package for free. Once youve installed and launched the PowerToys program, theres a list of utilities on the left: Click Text Extractor to see the keyboard shortcut for the tool, and instructions for how to use it.By default, the shortcut key is Win+Shift+T. Press this with any kind of image on screen, and you can drag out a selection window: Anything within this window that PowerToys Text Extractor identifies as text will be instantly converted and copied to the keyboard. Again, you can tap Ctrl+V in another app to paste the copied text. Its not the most sophisticated of solutions, but it does the job.0 Σχόλια 0 Μοιράστηκε 151 Views

WWW.POLYGON.COMQuick, watch one of the best sci-fi TV seasons ever while Apple TV Plus is freeApple TV Plus is free the weekend of January 3rd and 4th and, like a lot of people, I have a suggestion for what you should watch. Most of the suggestions are probably fantastic and worthwhile, as Apple has thrown their trillion dollar weight around the streaming wars and assembled a shockingly good catalogue of original shows. But I think you should ignore all of that and sit down for the single best season of science fiction television. No, not that one. Not that one either. Im talking about Foundation season 2.Oh, you think thats hyperbolic? Well Im just getting started. Foundation (season 2) has one of Lee Paces best performances, has the best space ship designs this side of Villeneuves Dune, has the best romantic scoundrel Han Solo-type since Empire Strikes Back, and has the most bombastic television finale since the Red Wedding. Its all backed up with an inexplicably lush costume, set, and CGI budget that cant be explained as anything other than a nine figure tax write off. And you dont need to have seen a single episode of the first season or read a page of the book to enjoy any of it!Heres the thing about Isaac Asimovs Foundation: its a strange choice for a television series, one that requires a lot of modifications to function as episodic storytelling. There were clearly some kinks to work out, and it seems to have taken one mediocre season to iron out all those wrinkles. Luckily, the series also sort of functions like an anthology, with a cast of mostly new characters for the second (and upcoming third) season. All you need to know from the first season is that (spoiler warning) immortal clone emperor Lee Pace is big mad about a group of nerds (led by Ed Harris and his protege Lou Llobell) who keep saying his galactic empire is going to collapse (and theyre totally right, because math). There, I summarized the mediocre first season and now youre ready for a prestige sci fi drama full of pulpy adventures, palace intrigue, steamy love stories (gay and not), and some really good explosions.Still not convinced? Well there is that naked Lee Pace ninja fight in the season 2 premiere. Now hurry up, youve got 10 incredible episodes to watch, you can thank me later!0 Σχόλια 0 Μοιράστηκε 147 Views
