BEFORESANDAFTERS.COMThe new tech that made Mufasa possibleBehind MPCs QuadCap motion capture, premium previs and 2,000 frame renders on the film.Barry Jenkins Mufasa: The Lion King is a fully CG film. However, it is intended to look as if it could have been filmed for real in Africa (just like its 2019 predecessor, The Lion King). To do that, the filmmakers employed an array of virtual production techniques such as VR scouting, virtual cinematography and real-time rendering to plan out sets and action and realize them in a manner that replicated a live-action feel (aided further by the final naturalistic animation and photoreal rendering). One of the new virtual production techniques relied upon on Mufasa was a tool called QuadCap, ie. a quadruped motion capture system. It formed part of the motion capture shoots for the film that took place in Downtown Los Angeles. A still from the official Disney Technology of Mufasa, featured below. Here, a number of the characters such as Mufasa, Sarabi and Taka were represented by performers in motion capture suits (with the resulting capture aimed at informing the final animation and helping with staging).Normally this would produce only bipedal motion captured animation, but QuadCap aligned the performers head and spine movements to the lions head and neck, their legs to the lions front legs, and simulated the lions back legs and hips. It was great because it offered so much flexibility for Barry Jenkins, observes Audrey Ferrara, who was MPCs visual effects supervisor on the film, working with production visual effects supervisor Adam Valdez, animation supervisor Daniel Fotheringham and virtual production supervisor Ryan Champney. On the stage, there would also be DOP James Laxton with a virtual camera and he and Barry could immediately say, No, it needs to be a little bit punchier in terms of the movement, or, Hold on there for a minute so we can really come close to you. It was art directable live in Unreal Engine.MPC was behind QuadCap and all of the virtual production and visual effects on Mufasa. Within Unreal Engine, a total of 12,680 on-stage takes were shot using the V-Cam and motion capture systems. Meanwhile, a total of 7,399 live motion capture and QuadCap performances were captured during the shoot. The VFX studio was involved the whole way, including in early pre-production during a COVID lockdown period with the director and cinematographer, and also production designer Mark Friedberg, and later in Los Angeles. At this early stage, concept art led to early set builds and then VR scouts to help flesh out the world. As sets and shots continued to be planned, so too did lighting. All of this occurred within an Unreal Engine sandbox crafted by MPC.Premium previsThe ultimate goal of this prep work was previs at a high fidelity level. Adam Valdezs goal on this one was, We need to have premium previs, relates Ferrara. In fact, it was to not even think about it like previs, but more like going into the first pass of the movie. This meant our sets were way more detailed in terms of textures, and even the first pass of effects were generated, including water. If there was fire or rain, it would be there, all in Unreal. And then, continues Ferrara, James Laxton would spend a lot of time setting up his light rigs in Unreal. With ray tracing enabled, it gave him and everyone a better idea of how the final shots would look. It can be so hard to project yourself into the final image. It takes so long to get there, usually, so we wanted to give them something that would be shaped closer to what they wanted to achieve sooner in the process.MPC developed new tools to export the resulting Unreal Engine files into post-production, too. We would save the animation, says Ferrara. We would save the light rigs. We would save everything: the cameras, the environments. It meant we had our blocking of pretty much everything. What Ferrara says was also a huge benefit of this premium previs process was effectively having the entire film inside of Unreal Engine. If we wanted to do re-shoots, or if we wanted to explore different approaches, you could go back in there. The lighting was already set-up, you just export, and boom. We even pushed final animation being done in Maya back into Unreal, and when that was rendered in there it really helped with editorial. The previs was the Bible, the cornerstone of everything. As a VFX supervisor, I would constantly go back to the previs. Suddenly, you are not constrained by the pipe anymore. Its malleable, its flexible, and thats great.Going bigger on MufasaThe world in which Mufasa travels in the film spans some 107 square miles. Thats about the same size as Salt Lake City, Utah, all of which had to be created by MPC. 77 digital sets were created, with 5,790 assets such as trees, plants and grass species were built, and another 118 photoreal creatures made. By the end of the film, the VFX studio would have completed 1500 fully-CG shots, and using 25 petabytes of storage (rendering the film in final quality took 150 million hours). The process began with Friedbergs teams concept art and builds, and was also informed by a team that visited several countries including Namibia, Botswana and Tanzania. That team came back with something like 10 terabytes of material, describes Ferrara. Just tons of videos, photos and photogrammetry. The MPC team in post-production would process the photogrammetry of, say, columns in a canyon and share them with the art department. Then they would be able to use it in their layouts for the scouts. Just like the Unreal previs, we had those assets traveling between pre-production and post-production all the time. In addition to the build of many landscapes, MPC also had the challenge of the camera generally coming much closer to the characters than the previous film. The camera comes close and back and keeps going back and forth, says Ferrara. So we needed those characters to hold up very close-up. Theres way more details in the model, way more hair in the groom. We had to rebuild the lookdev and the shaders of the fur from scratch in order to have this complexity. Each lion in Mufasa featured over 30,000,000 hairs to achieve the realistic look of fur. Just Mufasas mane on its own was made up of 16,995,454 hair curves. The lion has 600,000 hairs on his ears, 6.2 million hairs on his legs, and 9 million hairs covering the middle portion of his body. Some shots feature constantly moving cameras and long frame ratesexceeding over 2,000 frames at times (that were also realized in stereo). Then there were effects simulations, including environments. Simulation of the environments was crucial, states Ferrara. We had to make sure that this world was dynamic and kinetic. Those characters are moving creatures moving through a moving world. So the grass, the trees, the simulation of the air, even of the pollen in the air. It was all about making sure that it didnt feel static and that we werent just putting characters straight onto some kind of backdrop. Water, of course, was a major effects simulation task. It existed in several states like rivers, rain, mist, snow and clouds. Says Ferrara: The water is a character in the story. It goes hand-in-hand with Mufasas story, which is his fear of water, the water that separated him from his parents. It needed to be art directable because it needed to perform in order to match the performance of the characters. The films landmark flash flood sequence, in which Mufasa is washed away, was one in which MPC started the process in effects and then went back and forth between effects and animation. We had to almost rehearse this process even before it was turned over, advises Ferrara. It was like us getting ready to go into the arena for the fight and be prepared. Snow, too, was a challenge for the MPC team. My personal fear on this movie was the snow and how to make snow look good and realistic, admits Ferrara. I had this one shot that was my personal nemesis throughout the movie, which was when Rafiki falls down and makes a snow angel. That one gave me nightmares. But it was also very satisfying when we cracked the code and made it work. And cracked the code, MPC did. One particular snow angel shot required the simulation of over 620 million snow particles. WWW.FASTCOMPANY.COMIf you buy a Ford EV, you can still get a free home charger through MarchAfter record EV sales in 2024, Ford is extending a program in which it gives a complimentary home charger and installation to EV buyers.Called the Ford Power Promise, the automaker first announced the program in September 2024, as a way to boost fourth quarter EV sales. We have a lot of customers open to electric, but theyre sitting on the fence, Martin Delonis, senior manager of strategy with Ford Model E, said during a news briefing at the time. The automaker hoped a free home EV charger, with installation included, would assuage concerns about range and charging access. The program was initially slated to run between October 2024 and the beginning of January. Now, Ford has extended the offer through March 31, 2025, for anyone who buys a 2024 or 2025 model year of one of its three EV offerings: the Mustang Mach-E, F-150 Lightning, or E-Transit Cargo Van.The news of the Ford Power Promise expansion comes after a record fourth quarter, where Ford says it sold more than 30,000 EVs. More than half of those sales were for the Mustang Mach-E, the best quarter for that model. Ford says this makes it the best-selling electric SUV in the country behind Teslas Model Y for 2024.For the year overall, Ford sold more than 97,800 EVsa nearly 35% increase from 2023and each of its EV models set sales records. The Mustang Mach-E, which was first introduced in 2019, saw 51,745 sales, up 27% from the previous year. Thats more than sales of Fords gas-powered Mustangs, which totaled just over 44,000 for 2024. Sales of the F-150 Lightning, which launched in 2022 and has since been the top or second-best selling electric truck every year since, totaled 33,510, up 39%. That increase occurred even as Ford paused its Lightning production, a move announced in October 2024 in response to slowing EV demand. (Production resumed on January 6.) And E-Transit Van (launched in 2022) sales reached 12,610up 64% year over year.Ford also saw a surge in hybrid vehicle sales. Earlier in 2024, the automaker announced it was canceling some planned all-electric SUVs to focus on hybrids (but assured its still working on rolling out affordable EV options as well). Hybrid vehicle sales totaled more than 187,000up 40% from the prior year. Hybrid trucks drove that growth, including the Ford Maverick and the F-150 Hybrid.Though there were reports of EV sales in general slowing in 2024, sales are still increasing overalljust at a slower rate than in previous years. And like Ford, a few automakers saw a strong finish in the fourth quarter. Fourth quarter EV sales grew about 12% across the market, according to Cox Automotive. The market researcher predicts that EV sales will keep growing, and that one out of every four vehicles sold in 2025 will be electric.0 Comments 0 Shares 38 Views

WWW.FASTCOMPANY.COMMeet the ethics czar who will vet Trump officialsThe top U.S. ethics official charged with preventing government workers conflicts of interest is about to take the hot seat in Washington, as President-elect Donald Trumps new cabinet and other appointees declare their financial assets and prepare for their new jobs.We are in touch with the transition team and working with them, said David Huitema recently when he sat down with Reuters for his first official interview since being sworn in for the job on Dec. 16. The inauguration will be Jan. 20.Ethics experts say the director of the Office of Government Ethics, or OGE, is in the spotlight during any presidential transition, but Huitema faces special challenges ahead of Trumps second term, evaluating a myriad of business ties for Trump, his family and advisers. President Joe Biden appointed Huitema in 2023, but he was not confirmed by the then Democratic-controlled Senate for more than a year.Experts pointed to the shortened tenure of Walter Shaub, the last person to hold the job when Trump entered the White House. Shaub was OGE director from 2013 and left in July 2017, before his five-year term was up, after clashes with the Trump administration. They also noted that several of Trumps latest nominees have expressed disdain for the agencies they will run. After nine years as ethics chief at the U.S. State Department, Huitema will spearhead the OGEs standard task of helping scrutinize hundreds of new Senate-vetted nominees and thousands of political appointees for potential financial and personal conflicts. If he does his job well, chances are good Huitema could be fired fairly promptly, Shaub warned in an open letter last month. Huitema told Reuters he has faith in the intentions of most new entrants to government. He shared his views on ethics education and maintaining the public trust, but declined to answer specific questions about the incoming administration. The ethics office only deals with potential government employees, he noted. That means it will not vet outside advisers like billionaires Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy, who Trump has asked to recommend cuts in government spending.Q: What does the OGE do, exactly?A: The ultimate goal is to ensure that federal employees are making decisions based on national interest and policy priorities of the administration rather than any personal interest especially financial interest. The OGE itself is a small agency of just about 75 employees, but we work with a team of about 4,000 ethics officials interspersed, who engage more directly with federal employees. One important immediate task, he said, will be with nominee financial disclosure, helping ensure that nominees for Senate confirmed positions meet their requirements for complete disclosure of their financial interests and arrangements.Q: How does the financial disclosure process work with presidential nominees? A: Normally, he said, nominees for top jobs fill out reports early to help the office identify potential conflicts or steps the nominee might have to take if they are confirmed so all that information is available to the Senate and to the officials so they know what they are getting themselves into.Q: What sort of deadlines are there? When do people have to make these disclosures? A: He said nominees should submit a report within five days of their nomination. Our goal is to help these incoming officials, help the Senate and do so as efficiently as possible. He noted that any member of the public can request a copy of any financial disclosure report filed with the OGE. The idea is the public, too, can help play a role in monitoring for conflicts of interest.Q: What is the enforcement mechanism if there are conflicts of interest? A: Its not so much if a conflict comes up on the form itself, but whether ultimately any federal employees is engaged with work that then conflicts with their financial interest. The conflict of interest law is a criminal law, so the ultimate recourse is prosecution by the Department of Justice. Our role is to actually help advise employees to avoid that situation We will work with the agency ethics officials if we learn of a potential conflict of interest problem to make sure that gets addressed, ultimately we work with the Department of Justice as well if necessary.Q: As the State Department ethics head, what lessons did you learn?A: Most employees, career and appointed, want to follow the law and want to act with integrity and they appreciate the help of ethics officials Q: In your Congressional testimony, you said you think the OGE can help in the struggle against the growing cynicism and distrust that can undermine our democratic self government. Can you explain? A: We want to make sure employees dont act based on personal interests, especially financial interests and personal motivations. In practice the federal ethics rules may be more limited in their actual scope than people appreciate, so peoples assumptions that theres a specific issue with compliance with federal ethics laws may not be well grounded.Q: What are some examples of interests that are not substantial enough to raise red flags?A: The financial conflict of interest laws are pretty exact in terms of their scope. Either you have enough stock to pose a conflict or you dont.Q: Can ethics be taught? For people coming from the business side, interactions are often based around How can I use this to advantage me or my company, on purpose.A: I hope so because there are lots of ethics training requirements, he said, laughing. He agreed officials coming from the private sector are used to networking and What can you do to benefit someone so they can in turn benefit you It is a challenge to make sure those officials and new employees understand that the expectations within government are a little bit different. Q: What happens if the DOJ does not take ethics laws seriously? Where does that leave you?A: Criminal prosecution is one extreme, but there is enforcement at the agency level in terms of discipline.Q: The president can grant a waiver exempting someone from conflict of interest laws, correct? Is that something the OGE can push back on, or advise against?A: The president in some cases and agency heads or officials can grant exemptions but must consult with the OGE. He said exemptions can be granted when the potential conflict of interest isnt viewed as that significant. Ultimately OGE needs to know when a waiver is issued. They can be made public.(This Jan. 5 story has been refiled to add Bidens first name in paragraph 3.)Heather Timmons and Gabriella Borter, Reuters0 Comments 0 Shares 38 Views

WWW.FASTCOMPANY.COMOnline shopping grew to $1.2 trillion over the holiday season, Salesforce foundOnline sales hit record highs$1.2 trillion globally and $282 billion in the U.S.over the holiday season, but high return rates could hit strong profit margins, according to new data from Salesforce.Holiday shoppers have already sent back $122 billion in merchandise, according to the data that was aggregated from more than 1.5 billion global shoppers. That figure could eventually grow to $133 billion, says Salesforce.Retailers had a robust holiday season, but a 28% rise in the rate of returns compared to last year is a cause for some concern, Caila Schwartz, Salesforce director of consumer insights, said in a blog post.Part of that high figure comes from an increase in consumer behaviors such as try-on hauls, which is when people buy massive amounts of clothing and record it for social media; and bracketing, which is buying extra sizes above and below the consumers standard size.Salesforce argued that retailers should invest in artificial intelligence solutions, like AI agents, to make the returns process easier and more tailored to specific customers. For sure, the company is building its own AI solutions for retailers. It says that 75% of U.S. shoppers are interested in using an AI agent to complete returns and exchanges.Retailers who have embraced AI and agents are already seeing the benefits, but these tools will be even more critical in the new year as retailers aim to minimize revenue losses on returns and reengage with shoppers, Schwartz said.Despite the high returns, the strong sale season was boosted by surges in mobile and social media commerce, in addition to increased consumer spending, according to the data.0 Comments 0 Shares 38 Views
