LAS VEGAS When I stepped on the showroom floor in Las Vegas at CES, the largest tech industry trade show in the world, earlier this week, I felt a sense of dread. Ive been coming to the show, off and on, for a decade, and the story is always the same: The industry made new gadgets for you, and theyre slightly better than the old ones. Despite the hype, its not often that theres anything revolutionary.But the vibe was slightly different this year. There was no shortage of new machines on the CES showroom floor that are indeed slightly better than the old ones, and which will make your life easier or more fun TVs, robotic vacuum cleaners, fancy phone chargers. What really stood out, however, were the growing number of things that are designed to make you and the planet healthier. Everything from advanced fitness trackers to portable solar energy systems show that innovation means more than cramming more pixels into a display or adding AI features to a washing machine. It gives me hope that tech companies, despite the gloom and doom that they sometimes bring out in people, may be guiding us toward a better future after all.CES, formerly known as the Consumer Electronics Show, takes over Las Vegas at the beginning of January, and its a big deal. Last year, the show attracted nearly 140,000 people, including industry analysts, buyers from major retailers, venture capitalists, and journalists like me, all of whom gawked at the latest gadgets and wild concepts, like Samsungs rolling robot that can turn your floor into a screen. This is the show where decisions get made about what kinds of tech you might be able to buy but only in the near future. Its about as fun as going to an amusement park where youre only allowed to look at the rides.The show started out as a much smaller affair in New York City in the late 60s and is where, over the years, the first VCR, CD player, Nintendo Entertainment System, and Xbox all made their debut. But at this years show, I found myself spending more time in unexpected corners of the convention center, where categories like digital health and energy storage were on display.Health 2.0Digital health probably makes you think about either fitness trackers or Bluetooth-enabled blood pressure cuffs, but the category is expanding in unexpected directions. There are new ways to gather health data, surprising ways to monitor your brain waves, and even AI-powered platforms that promise to make your whole family healthier. And, of course, there are fitness trackers. With the viral popularity of the Oura Ring, there were several other smart rings at the show, including one called Evie, which has an AI-powered chatbot trained on medical journals. There were also other ways to track your health, like Lingo, an over-the-counter continuous glucose monitor that works with an app-based fitness coach. (This is the same kind of tech that doctors now increasingly prescribe for people with diabetes.) Speaking of coaches and AI, Panasonic of all companies is launching a wellness coach for the whole family powered by Anthropics Claude AI. Its called Umi, and its something Id consider using for my own family for things like keeping track of how everyones feeling and even coming up with ideas for fun activities we can do together.Health trackers took on different form factors, too. Master & Dynamic, an audio company, is now selling a set of headphones that can actually read your brainwaves thanks to tech from a startup called Neurable AI. There are electroencephalography (EEG) sensors built into the earcups that can actually sense how well youre paying attention to something. I tried the headphones and was blown away by the accuracy. Somewhat similarly, a Canada-based company called Myant makes smart textiles, which is a phrase I did not expect to encounter at CES. Theyre literally clothes that you wear that have sensors woven into their threads so that your underwear or an armband can continuously monitor health metrics, including heart rate and body temperature. This year, Myant is releasing a new generation of its tech that can also capture EKG readings and continuously measure blood pressure. With all of this data, your doctor can get a much better picture of your health than what a periodic check-in from a smartwatch or ring could offer.Were developing a DSL cable to the human body to really connect the human operating system, Myants founder and CEO Tony Chahine said in an interview. As opposed to thinking of us as a device for a specific thing, think of us as an interface for many things.The health-focused innovations scale up, too. Probably the most potentially powerful invention I saw at the whole show was the OnMed CareStation. Its essentially a portable clinic that can be dropped into rural areas or even in underserved communities in the middle of a city. Once the patient steps in, theyre greeted by a human health care professional on a life-size screen and guided through any number of diagnostic tests with the help of tools like a blood pressure cuff and an otoscope that drops down from the ceiling. Its basically a much more powerful and comprehensive version of doing a telehealth appointment on your phone. The whole thing just needs a power outlet to run and is internet-connected thanks to Starlink. But the companys CEO Karthik Ganesh insists that the fancy kiosk is more than hardware.We have spent too much energy thinking tech is a silver bullet, Ganesh told me and explained that OnMeds CareStations redefine how people can get their health care needs met. In some cases, it gives people who live in health care deserts access to a doctors office they otherwise wouldnt have. A healthier EarthWhile I didnt expect to see so many exciting health-based innovations at the show, I was expecting to see a lot of talk about sustainability and the energy transition. I was not disappointed.One booth featuring three companies embracing renewable energy offered a good example of how clean tech is coming to our homes in a meaningful way. One of them called Biolite got its start making campstoves that could charge your phone but is now getting into the home energy business with a battery called Backup that can effectively work like a generator in the event of a blackout. In the same booth was a similar company called Copper thats making battery-equipped appliances, including an induction range that also works in a blackout. Finally, there was Gradient which makes window-mounted heat pumps (no batteries in this one yet) that promise to bring more energy-efficient heating and cooling into millions of homes.The energy transition is actually something that almost every company I talked to is focused on. All of these new technologies underscore a real shift at the show: For decades, innovation meant making TV look better or speakers sound better, but if youre to believe a lot of the companies at CES this year, its now about using tech to make our lives and our world better. John Deere is electrifying its tractor fleets and making them autonomous to save energy. Volkswagen is rolling out a line of satellite-connected electric SUVs under the old Scout brand. Samsung and LG are expanding their lineups of heat pumps and heat pump-powered dryers which are all internet-connected now. Even Sony is going to start selling an EV in partnership with Honda. I sat in it, and surrounded by screens and lidar sensors, it very much felt like living in a sci-fi reality. (It will cost about $100,000, so that was probably my one and only time sitting in that car.)My CES adventure this year lasted the better part of a week, and as I left the showroom floor for the final time, the dread had lifted and I felt somehow excited about the future of agriculture, smart cities, health care, and even cooking. Of course, what exists in the present at CES can take months or years before its in the real world. Its okay to feel impatient. Antarctic ice, however, has been at it for over a million. An international team of scientists has extracted a 1.74-mile-long (2.8 kilometers) ice core in Antarctica, hitting the frozen continents bedrock. The core represents a chronological register of Earths climate and atmosphere, with the oldest ice dating back as far as 1.2 million years ago, if not more. The achievement, announced in a statement by the Beyond EPICA Oldest Ice project, is expected to provide insight on one of climate sciences most enduring questions. Its worth clarifying that this record doesnt make it the oldest ice core ever extractedthat recognition goes to a 2.7-million-year-old ice core recovered in 2017. What makes the Beyond EPICA core special is its continuous, high-resolution climate record spanning 1.2 million years, offering crucial insights into ancient atmospheric conditions and glacial cycles.The ice core from the Beyond EPICA project. Beyond EPICA project. We have marked a historic moment for climate and environmental science, said Carlo Barbante of Ca Foscari University of Venice, coordinator of Beyond EPICA. The core was retrieved during the projects fourth Antarctic campaign. This is the longest continuous record of our past climate from an ice core, and it can reveal the interlink between the carbon cycle and temperature of our planet.Between 900,000 and 1.2 million years ago, glacial cycles shifted from lasting 41,000 years to 100,000 yearsa shift known as the Mid-Pleistocene Transition. The Beyond EPICA project aims to better understand this ancient climate phenomenon. Led by The Institute of Polar Sciences of the National Research Council of Italy (ISP-CNR), the scientists worked for more than 200 days, drilling into the ice and processing the ice core at a remote site in East Antarctica called Little Dome C, with a balmy average summer temperature of -31 degrees Fahrenheit (-35 degrees Celsius). From preliminary analyses recorded at Little Dome C, we have a strong indication that the uppermost 2,480 meters [1.54 miles] contain a climate record that goes back to 1.2 million years in a high-resolution record where up to 13,000 years are compressed into one meter of ice, said said Julien Westhoff, a postdoc at the University of Copenhagen and chief scientist in the field for the EPICA project.The deepest and oldest parts of the core, which were closest to the bedrock, are made of ancient ice that is heavily deformed, possibly mixed or refrozen and of unknown origin, as well as rocks from the bedrock itself. This section could further scientists understanding of refrozen ice under the Antarctic ice sheet, the glaciation history of this Antarctic region, and the last time the continent was ice-free.The project still faces significant hurdles, particularly the logistical challenge of transporting the segmented ice cores to a lab without risking melting. The precious ice cores extracted during this campaign will be transported back to Europe on board the icebreaker Laura Bassi, maintaining the -50C [-58 degrees F] cold chain, said Gianluca Bianchi Fasani, head of the Italian National Agency for New Technologies, Energy, and Sustainable Economic Developments (ENEA) logistics for Beyond EPICA. Photo: NICHOLAS KAMM/AFP via Getty Images The conspiracy theorist who entered Comet Ping Pong restaurant in Washington D.C. with two guns in late 2016 as part of the Pizzagate hysteria was shot by police on Jan. 4 and died this past Monday, according to a press release from the Kannapolis Police Department in North Carolina. Edgar Maddison Welch was a passenger in a vehicle that was pulled over by police on the night of Saturday Jan. 4 while driving a gray 2001 GMC Yukon, according to the Kannapolis Police Department. The officer recognized the vehicle as one normally driven by an individual who he had previously arrested, and knew had an outstanding warrant for arrest. A vehicle stop was made by the officer and during his interaction with the driver, the officer recognized the front seat passenger as the person with the outstanding warrant for arrest, the Kannapolis Police said in a statement. The police departments statement says the officer was speaking with the driver when two more officers arrived on the scene, and the first officer proceeded to open the front passenger side door.When [the officer] opened the door, the front seat passenger pulled a handgun from his jacket and pointed it in the direction of the officer, the police statement reads. That officer and a second officer who was standing at the rear passenger side of the Yukon gave commands for the passenger to drop the gun. After the passenger failed to comply with their repeated requests, both officers fired their duty weapon at the passenger, striking him. The police statement claims medical assistance was immediately summoned for the passenger and Welch was transported to the Atrium Health Cabarrus hospital in Concord before being transferred to an Atrium hospital in Charlotte when he died on Jan. 6. The three officers on the traffic stop, along with the driver and a back seat passenger of the Yukon were all uninjured in this incident, the statement reads. The officers who fired their guns were identified as Officer Brooks Jones and Officer Caleb Tate, who are now on administrative leave, though specifics about how many shots were fired and who may have struck Welch were not released. A third officer on the scene who was not identified didnt fire their weapon.In Dec. 2016, Welch drove from North Carolina to Washington D.C. looking for kidnapped and abused children he believed were being held in the restaurants basement, a conspiracy theory involving former presidential candidate Hillary Clinton that became extremely popular online in the lead-up to the 2016 election. Welch entered Comet Ping Pong with an AR-15 and a revolver, having a shotgun in his car, and sent families with children fleeing in terror. Welch was reportedly confused when he was told Comet Ping Pong had no basement, a central feature of the conspiracy theory that children were being trafficked and abused there. Pizzagate was started after emails from Clintons campaign manager John Podesta were released by WikiLeaks and conspiracy theorists became obsessed with the discussion of pizza and the Washington D.C. pizza place by name.Alex Jones was instrumental in helping push the conspiracy theory, along with other right-wing influencers like Mike Cernovich and Jack Posobiec. Here in 2024, Posobiec has become even more influential as the editor of Human Events, a news outlet that churns out articles sometimes shared by president-elect Donald Trump. Cernovich also has some influence here in the 2020s, as someone who frequently interacts with billionaire Elon Musk. When I think about all the children Hillary Clinton has personally murdered and chopped up and raped, I have zero fear standing up against her, Jones said in a since-deleted YouTube video posted on Nov. 4, 2016, according to the Washington Post. Yeah, you heard me right. Hillary Clinton has personally murdered children. I just cant hold back the truth anymore.Jones was later banned from YouTube and several other mainstream social media platforms, but was allowed to return to X after Musk bought the site. The InfoWars host has not yet commented on Welchs killing, but it seems like a safe bet that he eventually will. Welch ultimately pleaded guilty in 2017 to interstate transportation of a firearm and ammunition and was sentenced to four years in prison. Markwayne Mullin, a Republican Senator from Oklahoma, revealed that the Facebook founder has invited him to spar multiple times while talking to human cringe factory Benny Johnson during an appearance on The Benny Show. Mark has actually reached out to me, texted me a couple times. The guys gotten into jujitsu real heavy, he wants me to come down there and roll with him, Mullin said. He wants to train, he actually wants to get in the cage and fight. He said, Id love for you to come down and spar with me sometime. I think thatd be great to go down there and do that. Mullin is no stranger to fights, its just that he tends to be the one issuing the challenge. He made headlines back in 2023 when he challenged Sean OBrien, the president of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, to fight on the floor of Congress over some critical tweets that OBrien had made about him. The whole thing devolved into a yelling match with a whole lot of posturing and no actual fisticuffs, which seems like its about the speed Mullin is most comfortable operating these days.There is some fight in Mullins pasthe registered a 3-0 record in three matches in the Xtreme Fighting League, a local fighting circuit in Oklahoma. But he hasnt been in the octagon for an official match since 2007.Zuck, meanwhile, has been building up his fighting resume for a couple of years. He reportedly picked up Brazilian jiu-jitsu sometime around 2022, getting professional training from UFC stars. The tech exec netted a medal in the first tournament he appeared in, then famously got challenged to a cage match by Elon Musk. Sadly, that never came to fruition because as soon as Zuck told Musk to drop a pin and knuckle up, Twitters owner issued a series of the saddest cop-outs committed to the internet, including having his mom intervene for him. While Zuckerberg tore his ACL sparring shortly after the online kerfuffle, hes apparently recovered and ready to get back in the ring. Hes so all-in on his MMA era that he added UFC head Dana White to Facebooks board. So sure, why not challenge a Senator with a history in the ring to throw down? If nothing else, it signals Zucks full right-wing turn. Credit: Dept. of JusticeShareA Japanese Yakuza leader pleaded guilty in federal court on Wednesday for attempting to traffic military-grade weapons and roughly 1,100 lbs of narcotics. Those charges alone will get someone locked up for quite a long timethrow in another conviction for trying to offload thousands of pounds of uranium and weapons-grade plutonium, and its unlikely Takeshi Ebisawa will ever leave prison.Its hard to pick the most damning evidence on display in the Department of Justices court filings. Theres an undercover agents photograph of Ebisawa brandishing a stolen US Army rocket launcher. Theres also a screenshot of a WhatsApp conversation between Ebisawa and a co-conspirator showing images of lab-confirmed heroin, the co-conspirator asking, Is this the correct packages [sic] you gave to my guys? followed by Ebisawa responding, Yes. Then theres audio of the Yakuza boss discussing nuclear weapons-grade material sales with an undercover agent he believed was a general in the Iranian army.Ebisawa pleaded guilty to six counts. Credit: Dept. of Justice Ebisawa unwittingly introduced [agents] to Ebisawas international network of criminal associates, which spanned Japan, Thailand, Burma, Sri Lanka, and the United States, among other places, for the purpose of arranging large-scale narcotics and weapons transactions, the DOJs January 7 announcement explains. If completed, these sales would have helped fund and supply multiple armed militant groups in Burma, as well as distribute drugs such as methamphetamine and heroin across New York.Apart from the narcotics and stolen munitions, Ebisawa reportedly worked for years to facilitate deals involving a large quantity of nuclear materials, according to the DOJ. To prove he possessed them, the Yakuza leader offered undercover authorities multiple pictures of rocky substances next to Geiger counters indicating their radiation levels. These were accompanied by supposed paper records confirming it to be thorium and uranium. During later meetings with undercover officers, Ebisawa later offered up 220 lbs of uranium concentrate powdercommonly referred to as yellowcake for sale. He also told an agent posing as an Iranian general that he could supply him better and more powerful plutonium for the countrys nuclear weapons program.Ebisawa sent photos of supposed uranium next to Geiger counters. Credit: Dept. of Justice Ebisawa wasnt wrong about the plutonium from a technical standpoint. Modern thermonuclear weapons rely on what is called a plutonium pit. This core component contains a gas such as deuterium and tritium that is encased in chemical explosives. Once detonated, the explosives condense the plutonium surrounding the case so intensely that it triggers a fission reaction. The transition from atomic to thermonuclear designation occurs when a warheads uranium core combines to generate a fusion reaction. This crucial detail is what boosts a weapon of mass destruction on the order of a few dozen kilotons to something like Castle Bravo, the first US thermonuclear bomb test. Although initially estimated in 1959 to generate a blast equivalent to six megatons of TNT, the device yielded a 15 megaton explosionallegedly the most powerful nuclear weapon ever detonated by the US.Ebisawas access to plutonium went beyond its potential for devastation. Plutonium occurs much more rarely in nature than uranium, meaning it generally requires sophisticated and expensive laboratory and manufacturing facilities. Buying the product outright likely would have allowed bad actors to skip more than a few steps while saving them quite a lot of cash. According to court documents, a nuclear forensic laboratory confirmed Ebisawas plutonium was weapons-grade material suitable for use in a nuclear weapon. The International Atomic Energy Agency cites only 4,243 incidents involving the illegal handling of nuclear material since 1993. Of those, however, only an estimated eight percent related to trafficking or malicious use.
