  • KPop Demon Hunters, one of Netflixs most popular releases ever, makes estimated $18 million in opening weekend
    www.fastcompany.com
Netflix appears to have its first No. 1 box-office title in the streaming companys 18-year history thanks to the sensation of KPop Demon Hunters.Rival studios on Sunday estimated KPop Demon Hunters led all films over the weekend with $16-18 million in ticket sales. Distribution executives from three studios shared their estimates for the Netflix phenomenon on condition of anonymity because the streaming company has a policy of not reporting ticket sales.Following a dominating few weeks as one of the most popular Netflix releases ever, the streamer put the film into 1,750 theaters for sing-along screenings Saturday and Sunday. Studios are able to accurately estimate ticket sales for all releases on Sunday morning, though the uncommon nature of the KPop Demon Hunters releases means a wider variance. Some estimates were as high as $20 million. It amounted to a victory lap for KPop Demon Hunters, arguably the biggest hit of Hollywoods summer, and an ironic success for Netflix, whose emphasis on streaming, not theatrical release, upended the movie industry. Another sore spot for Hollywood: The film was developed and produced by Sony Pictures, which sold it to Netflix. Not all exhibitors went along. AMC, the largest theater chain in North America, declined to show the movie. But that didnt stop Netflix from claiming the box-office title its more traditional competitors typically own.David A. Gross, who runs the movie consulting firm FranchiseRe, called it a completely unique two-day musical event. It may turn out to be higher, said Gross. Theater owners are quick on their feet and can add capacity according to demand. The theatrical release, though limited, is out of the ordinary for the streaming giant, which has long stressed a commitment to subscriber releases. The movie debuted on the platform in late June and is currently Netflixs most-watched animated original film. The film centers on Huntr/x, a KPop superstar trio who double as demon hunters. The members, Rumi (Arden Cho), Mira (May Hong) and Zooey (Ji-young Yoo), must protect their fans and face their biggest enemy yet: a rival boy band made up of demons in disguise.Zach Creggers horror hit Weapons maintained strength in the box office during its third weekend, bringing in $15.6 million domestically. The buzzy horror movie has proved its staying power, raking in over $100 million globally since its release.Disneys Freakier Friday landed behind the horror movie once again, earning $9.2 million in North American theaters. The two films are real bright spots as the box office heads into a rather quiet finish for the summer, said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst for the data firm Comscore. Both films, which premiered simultaneously earlier this month, had a minimal 36% drop from last weekend.I think we have to look at the currency of the goodwill generated by people having these great summer moviegoing experiences, Dergarabedian said. We have to look at that as a more important metric than just the bottom-line dollars and cents. The Fantastic Four: First Steps earned $5.9 million domestically during its fifth weekend. The movie enjoyed a strong $118 million debut but has experienced a steady decline.Newcomer Honey Dont! opened in 1,317 North American theaters with a weekend gross estimate of $3 million, in line with expectations. The movie made it to the top 10, right above The Naked Gun.The dark comedy stars Margaret Qualley as Honey ODonahue, a small-town private investigator who investigates a slew of strange deaths tied to a church in Bakersfield, California.Top 10 movies by domestic box officeWith final domestic figures being released Monday, this list factors in the estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Comscore:Weapons, $15.6 million.Freakier Friday, $9.2 million. The Fantastic Four: First Steps, $5.9 million. The Bad Guys 2, $5.1 million.Nobody 2, $3.7 million.Superman, $3.4 million.Honey Dont! $3 million. The Naked Gun, $3 million.Jurassic World Rebirth, $2.1 million.Relay, $2 million.Itzel Luna and Jake Coyle, Associated Press

  • A Paradigm "Shift:" QwertyMax Keyboard Updates a 150-Year-Old UI
    www.core77.com
Believe it or not, on a daily basis you still use something invented in the 1860s. It's not an object, but a UI: The QWERTY keyboad layout, first patented by American inventor Christopher Latham Sholes in 1867.Initially, the QWERTY keyboard only provided capital letters, allowing early typists to send shouty correspondence to each other. But in 1878 Sholes came up with the shift key, allowing one to type both capital and lowercase letters with a relatively compact layout. Competing designs gave uppercase and lowercase letters their own keys; with this chaotic Caligraph typewriter below, uppercase keys are black, lowercase white. After adding the shift key, QWERTY market dominance ensued, and has persisted to this day.Is it time for an update? A startup called TypeMax thinks so. They reckon that symbols we hardly ever used in the 20th centurylike # and @are now daily parlance. Furthermore, coders use symbols constantly. Thus the design of their QwertyMax keyboard adds a dedicated symbol row above the numbers, as well as keys for commonly-used shortcuts and browser navigation controls on the right. The real sign of the times, though, is the QwertyMax's addition of a key that Sholes would not have been able to comprehend. Down at the bottom is a dedicated "emoji" key. This doesn't enable anything on the physical keyboard itself, but automatically opens your computer's emoji panel on-screen. At press time there was no price nor release date announced, just a sign-up waitlist promising 50% off of whatever the asking price will be.

  • Ayaneo KNKR Pocket FIT Elite is a Snapdragon Elite 8-powered affordable handheld
    www.yankodesign.com
Ayaneo has been on top of its game lately with handhelds that serve every type of gamer who loves the freedom of mobility while gaming. Known for its premium handhelds that more often than not reach the $1,000 mark (or even cross it), the brand has something to offer its more budget-conscious gamer. Under the sub-brand KONKR, the Chinese brand has just teased the first-ever budget-friendly Android handheld, which most likely will be powered by the Snapdragon Elite 8 SoC. If thats the case, the gadget will pack a lot of power to play your favorite AAA titles. But we also have to keep in mind the overheating issues that have been spotted in the processor. This announcement comes on the heels of the Snapdragon G3 Gen3-powered Pocket FIT, which was unveiled last month. The new model is obviously more powerful and is called the Pocket FIT Elite. The Ayaneo Pocket DS was announced not long ago, and now, this budget-friendly handheld makes a strong case for creating internal brand competition. One thing thats crystal clear in the teaser announcement is the $399 price tag for the Elite model and $329 for the Snapdragon Gen 3-powered version. The company also threw light on its product roadmap for the future.Designer: Ayaneo, KONKRThe handheld will compete against the likes of Retroid, Anbernic, AYN Thor, or the Windows-powered Flip 1S DS. Given all these brands are going even lower in the price segment, the FIT Elite will fill the gaping hole thats between the lower end spectrum of mobile gaming and the flagship handheld segment. Having a 6-inch display with 1080p resolution and 144Hz refresh rate, the device is built for performance, although it comes in the same skin as the Pocket FIT. Itll have a beefy 8,000mAh battery for long gaming sessions on a flight or the long train commute. Like other handhelds of the current era, the ELITE will have Hall Effect joysticks and triggers, which are essential for the longevity of joystick function and in-game precision, respectively. According to Ayaneo, the gadget will be the worlds first to have a Dual-Mode Trigger Lock on an Android handheld. To make extended gaming sessions comfortable, the handheld has an ergonomic large grip with the Ultra-FIT Comfort tech. Everything else set aside, if KONKR is indeed going to launch the handheld with the latest Snapdragon Elite 8 processor, itll be an interesting addition to the gamut of products on offer for modern gamers. The affordable yet performance-packed handheld is set to debut in September, which is not a long way off. Well be eagerly waiting for more information to seep in a few weeks to make a further assessment about this interesting proposition in the making. The post Ayaneo KNKR Pocket FIT Elite is a Snapdragon Elite 8-powered affordable handheld first appeared on Yanko Design.

  • Dev Log #21
    blog.polyhaven.com
Another two months flies by, heres what weve been working on:NamaqualandWere making great progress with the Namaqualand project and expect to finish it in the next two months. Hopefully, itll be ready around the next dev log!Its amazing how much work there is after scanning a location for just a week Theres not much more to say other than the team has been hard at work grinding out assets, so heres a little sneak peek:Moon ProgressMeanwhile, Dario has started working on our moon scans in earnest. There will be quite a few of them, and theyre all very similar, but we hope this will give you a lot of flexibility and variation in large environments.FabricIts been a while since I last spoke about our fabric scans project, and plans have changed a bit since then. While assembling the Cornell box and pondering what sort of machine wed build to automate the scanning process itself, we were contacted by a company in Germany, Colormass, that specializes in doing this sort of thing.Colormass offered to scan a small set of fabrics for us, more or less at cost. While still quite a bit more than it would have cost us to do ourselves, it would free up a few months of our time to work on other projects, so we decided it was still a good idea. They are working on a set of 30 scans as we speak, but weve seen 4 of them so far:Model RecategorizationIn more general news, weve spent some time rethinking the categories we use for models. What we have now was thought up many years ago, back in the brief days of 3D Model Haven, when we had less than 50 models in total. Now, the library is considerably larger and more varied, and were a bit tired of calling everything a prop or decorative. While were already fairly happy with the new categories weve created, changing categories for everything all at once has a number of technical implications. There are unanswered questions about how specifically we want the new system to workwhether or not it will be the same for textures and HDRIs, too.The website, our Blender add-on, and any third-party tools using our API all need to work seamlessly while we make the transition, taking into account users who may not have the latest version and are still expecting the old categories. Theres still much to decide and determine here, but I thought Id mention it so youre aware of one of the many aspects of running an asset library besides the act of making the assets themselves Blender Asset Drop HandlerSpeaking of our add-on, I made a patch for Blender 8 months ago that adds a small feature that would allow our add-on to be used more intuitively and efficiently.Quick and dirty proof of concept of what could happen if we had asset drop handlers in #b3d's Python API (my patch: https://t.co/JUDP0ls50U). pic.twitter.com/VLaAsHG1Df Greg Zaal (@GregZaal) May 16, 2024The feature is simply a Python hook into the asset browsers drag-and-drop event, which would allow us to attach our own code to this action. For example, we could download the asset after the user drags it into their scene rather than requiring all users to download all assets upfront, as it currently works.Similarly, we could ask the user what resolution theyd like the asset to be or simply follow some default preference. Currently, our asset always comes in at 1K resolution, and you have to go to a menu to change this after adding it to the scene. There are a number of other features we have in mind that rely on this patch, and its been waiting patiently for review for the last year. Finally, there has been some activity, and other developers have been working on similar patches and more general implementations, so its possible we may finally get to see these features in Blender soon Better Astro-HDRIs?Finally, a bit of a teaseOne of our most requested types of HDRIs are night HDRIs. We have a few, and a few more on the way from Namaqualand, but since shooting those weve realized our current lens is a bit soft. Its not bad, the image above being the worst case I could find, but the poor coma coupled with the relatively high level of noise (due to the limit of 15s exposures to avoid star trails) there is definitely some room for improvement.Luckily, Sigma recently released a new lens that blows every other potential astro-HDRI lens out of the water: the 14mm f/1.4 Art.Not only is this lens twice as bright as our current lens, meaning theoretically half as much noise, but its also on another level of sharpness wide open.Nikon Z7 + Laowa 15mm F/2Sony a7R4 + Sigma 14mm F/1.4We visited a local camera store and shot a few tests, albeit during the day, and came to the conclusion that we needed this We have an HDRI trip planned for the end of August, where well put it to the test and hopefully capture the best starry skies anyone has ever seen in an HDRI.Assuming the weather plays nicely with us.Thanks for reading this far! We look forward to sharing more exciting progress in the next Dev Log Until then, feel free to join us on Discord where we are always hanging out, and let us know what you are working on too!
