• Scientists Suspect Newly Discovered Mosasaur Fossil Is a Forgery

In 2021, scientists identified a new mosasaur species upon the discovery of a Cretaceous-period jaw with unusual teeth in a Moroccan mine. Theres only one problemthe remains may have been forged. Researchers in Canada have raised doubts about the authenticity of the fossil used to identify and describe a new species of extinct marine reptile, Xenodens calminechari, in 2021. Their analysis, detailed in a December 16 study published in The Anatomical Record, highlights inconsistencies within the previous research and calls for new CT scans of the jaw to confirm its validity. If their doubts prove to be true, it should be established in the published literature that this is a fake, Henry Sharpe of the University of Alberta, who led the recent study, told Live Science. Our rebuttal to Xenodens is now published open-access in The Anatomical Record: this bizarre shark-toothed mosasaur is likely both a forgery and nondiagnostic () pic.twitter.com/9s1UWMYJaw Hank Sharpe (@Paleoartologist) December 17, 2024 Mosasaurs were large marine lizards and one of the oceans top predators during the Cretaceous period (145.5 million to 66 million years ago), with some individuals reaching up to 56 feet (17 meters) long. The researchers from the 2021 study partly based their identification of the new mosasaur species on four sharp teeth found on an incomplete jawbone, dated to between 72.1 and 66 million years ago, and unearthed in a Moroccan phosphate mine. The new mosasaurid exhibits a dental battery [dental arrangement] with numerous small, short, bladelike teeth packed together to form a saw-like cutting edge, the researchers, led by Nicholas R. Longrich from the University of Bath, wrote in the 2021 study. They claimed that it was the first such arrangement of teeth discovered in tetrapods (four-limbed vertebrates), and it was this hypothesis that prompted Sharpe and his colleagues to take a closer look. Two of the surviving teeth on the alleged X. calminechari jaw sit within a single tooth socketa feature at odds with most other known mosasaur teeth and jaw arrangements, in which each tooth grows in its own socket. Mosasaur tooth sockets are developed from the bone of the individual teeth, as opposed to the bone of the jaw, explained Michael Caldwell of the University of Alberta, who also contributed to the new study. That means each tooth should have its own socket.Every time one of these teeth is resorbed and falls out, theres a huge pit left over. And thats because the next tooth is coming into that hole to build all that tissue back up again so that its firmly anchored in the jaw, he told Live Science. Additionally, Sharpes team suggests the presence of possible adhesive material and argue that the particular overlap of a kind of tissue over two teeth is unusual and could indicate forgery, according to the study. The unusual dental arrangement and tissue overlap of the fossil. Sharpe et. al. Besides the teeth themselves, the discovery of the jaw in Moroccos Khouribga province took place under potentially suspicious circumstances, since the fossil was obtained nonscientifically (without technical supervision) from an area in Morocco that yields many manipulated or forged specimens, they wrote in the study. The researchers ultimately suggest that the teeth and jaw may belong to two different creatures, though CT scans of the remains could settle any doubts. It remains to be seen whether the researchers will be able to apply this technique to the X. calminechari fossilor convince others to do soin the near future. For now, proceed with caution if you come across citations of a new mosasaur with strange teeth!Daily NewsletterYou May Also Like By Isaac Schultz Published January 13, 2025 By Margherita Bassi Published January 8, 2025 By Isaac Schultz Published January 2, 2025 By Margherita Bassi Published December 20, 2024 By Isaac Schultz Published December 19, 2024 By Isaac Schultz Published December 17, 2024

Jrva Burial Ground: Creating a Natural Landscape of Remembrance from Stockholm's Urban DiscardSave this picture! Alexander AssalOpened in October 2024, the Jrva Cemetery offers everyone, regardless of faith or beliefs, a space for remembrance, continuing Stockholm's long tradition of funeral history. After overcoming significant planning obstacles, the site, designed by Kristine Jensen Tegnestue and Poul Ingemann, was created to accommodate burials and funeral ceremonies, with options for coffins, urns, ash groves, and a commemorative forest. During the last edition of Open House Stockholm, visitors could explore its surrounding natural landscapes and connect with the space. The history of Jrva Cemetery is linked with the construction of the Jrva area between 1965 and 1975. Early proposals emerged in the 1960s to use the land for burial purposes, but the site was ultimately designated as a recreational area for residents in the 1970s. In line with the "Million Program," which aimed to build one million homes in ten years, urban gardener Holger Blom and his team utilized urban debris to create the distinctive "peaks," areas that would serve as parks for Stockholm's residents.Save this picture! These peaks were constructed from excavation materials, debris, and former landfills like the Granholmstoppen, now home to Jrva Cemetery. This artificial topography is also filled with remnants from the construction of the blue metro line, among other projects. Different ideas for the site's use emerged over the years, including a proposal in the mid-1970s to create a commemorative forest. Save this picture!By the early 2000s, plans for a new cemetery in northern Stockholm gained momentum. In 2009, an international architectural competition was launched, attracting 111 submissions. The winning proposal, arna (The Islands) by Kristine Jensen Tegnestue and Poul Ingemann, was selected. As Stockholm's population continues to grow, so does the need for spaces honoring the deceased. The aim is for this new burial ground to hold the same strategic and long-term significance as the Southern Woodland Cemetery in Stockholm. During this time, the area of Igelbcken was designated a cultural reserve. The Jrva field is not just a green lung, it is part of Jrva's identity and lifeblood. Now it will also be a place where we can come to say a final farewell to those who are closest to us and a place we can return to to remember and honor them, regardless of what we believe in or where we come from - Clara Lindblom, housing and property councilor Save this picture!Jrva Cemetery represents a new type of burial ground, integrating grave sites as "islands" within a natural landscape of meadows and paths. It provides a serene space for relaxation, contemplation, and connecting with nature. Located near Granholm stop, the cemetery serves as a popular destination for walking and outdoor recreation in the Jrva countryside, and at the edge of the Igelbcken cultural reserve near Tensta and Hjulsta. Although open to all, coffin burials are currently restricted to Stockholm residents. In addition to its unique landscaping, the site also features a new ceremonial building with a hall that can accommodate up to 100 people, suitable for funerals and other gatherings.Save this picture!Save this picture! The Granholmstoppen area is planned for phased expansion, with the next phase scheduled for 2034. This development occurs alongside the construction of a residential area at Tensta Terrace. Currently, Jrva Cemetery offers 9.000 new burial plots, and the second phase, planned for completion in a decade, will increase capacity to 20.000 plots.Save this picture! This feature is part of an ArchDaily series titled AD Narratives, where we share the story behind a selected project, diving into its particularities. • How To Make A Furnace In Minecraft
    www.gamespot.com
Aside from a crafting table, you won't use any other utility block more in the early-mid game of Minecraft than a furnace. The furnace is used to smelt items using a fuel source, which creates different items that you might not be able to find anywhere else. To see how to craft your own furnace, check out the guide below.Making a Furnace in MinecraftA furnace only requires a single crafting ingredient and you can acquire that material within your first few minutes in Minecraft. You can see the full crafting recipe for the furnace below:At a crafting table, place eight stone blocks (cobblestone is easiest) in every box but the middle one. This is all that's needed to create a furnace. You can interchangeably use stone blocks, so you don't have to have eight of the same kind. The crafting recipe for the furnace in MinecraftAnd that's all there is to crafting a furnace in Minecraft. You need a wood pickaxe to mine the stone from any nearby source and a crafting table to place the blocks in. It's perhaps the easiest utility block to make in Minecraft aside from the crafting table. It's strongly recommended to make more than one furnace, however, as you can place different materials in separate furnaces to make more materials you may need.Continue Reading at GameSpot

  • Path of Exile 2 devs agree difficulty is a bit too severe right now
    www.polygon.com
Even though Path of Exile 2 will be a little more forgiving in a patch coming later this week, the developers at Grinding Gear Games arent sure how easy to make its post-campaign dungeons. The most common complaints are being addressed in patch 0.1.1 this week: Monsters will leave behind fewer deadly explosions and endgame bosses can be attempted more than once. Item quality will also be improved, which should help players survive the campaign and create more powerful character builds as they reach the games most difficult dungeons. But the punishment for dying in an endgame dungeon, or map, isnt changing yet. Maps will still kick you out after one death, forfeiting all the time and materials you invested into them as well as some of your experience toward the next level up. Hours of progress can disappear in a flash, and anyone not interested in that will have to wait a big longer for a solution.Grinding Gear Games Jonathan Rogers and Mark Roberts were asked in a follow-up interview on Sunday by streamers Darth Microtransaction and GhazzyTV if players will ever get to retry a map after dying. To me, I feel like to be a game you have to have some level of failure [thats] possible, Rogers said. The experience penalty, he explained, is to communicate to players that they may not be ready to tackle harder maps. But I mean maybe thats the wrong way to look at it, Im not sure.Theres a few axis and I think theyre just a bit too severe when all combined together, Roberts added. He thinks the transition from the games directed campaign into the create-a-dungeon endgame is too hard for most people and needs to be smoothed out. But I need to think about it certainly a lot more and get a little bit more analytics on it as well and actually see what the actual problems are.The developers said plenty of things contribute to the problem and that the team is having regular discussions on how to tackle it. In the meantime, however, they want to see how the new patch plays out and focus on the major class balance changes coming afterward. The studio plans to start a new league (read: season) while the game is still in early access, giving players the opportunity to make new characters and test new features. The first league, which is expected to be on its way soon, will come alongside a substantial update to the game and maybe a few of its unreleased classes too.
