  • Here's How to Prevent Your Watch Band From Irritating Your Skin
    lifehacker.com
We may earn a commission from links on this page.Fitness trackers and smartwatches want to live on your wrist 24/7. You'll want them on during a workout, of course, and then for sleep tracking, and of course you wouldn't want to miss out on the stress readings and data displays throughout the day. But after a while of wearing a tight silicone band every minute of the day, you may find your skin starts to get red or itchy. Here are some tips on how to reduce the chances of irritation, and what you can do if you already have a rash.Wear your watch loosely when you're not working outMost makers of smartwatches and fitness trackers say that you should wear them loosely for daily wear. Fitbit, for example, writes that you should wear the band loosely enough that it can move back and forth on your wrist and instructs you to Lower the band on your wrist and loosen it after exercise. This loose fit allows air to contact your skin as the watch moves around during the day. This way, no part of your skin gets moisture or sweat trapped against it.Garmin and Apple (to name a few) all say basically the same thing. During exercise, youll want to wear the watch snugly, above your wrist bone (so its at least an inch or two away from your actual wrist joint). This lets you get a nice, snug contact between the heart rate sensor and your skin. But once the workout is over, loosen the watch back to a more comfortable position.A good rule of thumb is that when youre not working out, the watch should be able to move back and forth on your wrist. But during a workout, if you try to slide the watch, your skin should move with it.Rinse the watch band dailyIrritation can happen when sweat, moisture, or other substances (like, say, soap) get trapped against your skin. An easy way to avoid this is to take the watch off and rinse it when youre in the shower. If not in the shower, then try to find some other time during the daymaybe while youre washing your handsto take the watch off and makes sure its clean. Check the care instructions that came with your device; you may be advised to not use soap.Consider a different material for the bandWaterproof materials like silicone tend to be the worst culprits for irritation, probably because of the way they can trap sweat and moisture against the skin. If this is an ongoing issue for you, consider a fabric watch band that breathes a little better. For example, heres a five-pack of elastic bands that fit the Fitbit Charge 6. Whatever your device, there are probably a ton of third-party bands out there in a variety of materials. Folavii Five-Pack Elastic Bands for Fitbit Charge 6 $14.99 at Amazon Get Deal Get Deal $14.99 at Amazon A pro tip, though: if youre going to get a fabric band, get two. That way you can still wash them (or wear them in the shower or pool) and then swap for a dry one rather than wearing the soggy one for the rest of the day.Give your skin a break if its already irritatedIf youve already gotten a rash on your skin, the most important thing is to stop wearing the watch while you wait for it to heal. If you take a break from your watch at the first sign of irritation, it will probably clear up quickly. The one time I had some redness and itching from a Garmin strap, I immediately washed the watch and then, once it was dry, put it back on my other wrist. Yes, it feels weird to have your watch on the wrong wrist, but you need to give your skin a chance to heal. Its also OK to simply not wear the watch for a while.

  • LG Display's new OLEDs are even brighter and more power-efficient
    www.engadget.com
LG Display is introducing its 4th-generation OLED TV displays today, which manage to not only be brighter than what it showed off in 2024, but also more power-efficient and less reflective. The LG OLED evo M5 was one of Engadget's favorite announcements from CES 2025, thanks in part to the LG Display panels it uses.LG Display's new 4th-generation OLED TV panel can reach a maximum brightness "as high as 4,000 nits," according to the company, which is 33 percent brighter than the previous generation panel. It's worth noting maximum brightness is not the same thing as uniform brightness across the same display panel, but it's still a notable improvement when OLEDs can struggle with brightness. Especially when those gains are paired with better energy efficiency, which LG Display says is "around 20 percent greater" on a 65-inch 4th-generation panel.LG DisplayThe changes to the new OLED's efficiency are due to enhancements to the panel's "structure and power supply system" while the brightness improvements have to do with a clever to tweak to how LG is arranging the LEDs in the panel. The 4th-generation OLED uses a "Primary RGB Tandem structure" which stacks independent layers of red and green light elements with two blue layers. Each layer produces more light which helps improve brightness and "color purity."LG Display is also aiding color reproduction (and presumably purity) with a new film coating that reduces the amount of light reflected from the surface of the panel and light absorbed and reflected inside the panel. The company says all of these developments are in service of making better "AI TVs" but if that doesn't sway you, it sounds like TVs with these new panels should just look better too.The 4th-generation OLED panel will appear in "top-of-the-line mass-produced" TVs this year, and LG Display says the "Primary RGB Tandem structure" will be gradually introduced into Gaming OLED monitors in the future, as well. This article originally appeared on Engadget at https://www.engadget.com/home/home-theater/lg-displays-new-oleds-are-even-brighter-and-more-power-efficient-020010221.html?src=rss

  • How our food system needs to change for a healthier future
    www.fastcompany.com
Throughout my career, Ive worked and served in many of the poorest countries of the world, places that lacked running water, access to fresh foods, refrigeration, air conditioning, sewer systems, and many other necessities we so often take for granted. Walking along hot dusty streets in those neighborhoods, where so much was missing, I was struck by one detail that was almost universally presenta small kiosk selling sugary sodas, cookies, potato chips, and other poor-quality foods. And that situation always stuck with me: How are we able to get so many empty calories into the farthest, poorest corners of the world, but were not able to do the same with healthier, more nutritious foods? The answer lies within our current food system. It relies on an 80-year-old strategy, designed to crank out calories on a massive scale to feed a growing population after World War II. Between 1948 and 2017, total farm productivity tripled according to the USDA, while NIH data shows that average calorie intake increased by more than 30% in a similar period.Mission accomplished. But were living with the consequences of that success todaywith a significant cost to human health in the form of chronic disease and more. According to the National Task Force on Hunger, Nutrition, and Health, poor nutrition is the top driver of U.S. deathsestimated to cause more than 500,000 deaths a year. And like many other crises in society, these burdens disproportionally affect those who can least afford itespecially those with lower incomes, those living in rural areas, or those who are in minority groups. In 2022, the USDA released a study that showed nearly 13% of American households were food insecurestruggling to meet their nutritional needs at some point in 2022. But no American is unaffected. And the impact on the environment is unsustainable as well. According to the U.N. and a 2018 study published in Science, 26% of greenhouse gas emissions come from food, while 50% of the worlds hospitable land and 70% of the worlds freshwater withdrawals are used for food production. In short, this is all an outcome of a badly broken formula that must change. Our global food system must evolve to meet modern challenges. We need to deliver affordable and sustainable nutrition (not just calories) that are broadly accessible. Those kiosks I mentioned need to be full of nutrient-dense shelf-stable foods that can be shipped and stored in any climate. The solution? We need to rethink the food we produce, where we grow it, and how its made. How to fix problemsIf theres a silver lining in this story, its this: When we collectively decide to take action to improve our food system, we can move mountains. That same can do mindset that fed people after WWII can drive change today. Which brings up a bold questionHow do we get more affordable nutrition into the hands of more people?Nutritious ingredients should come from where they usually do: nature. There are countless healthy ingredients that exist in nature that can replace synthetic or artificially refined ingredients, but most of them cant be produced affordably at scalethere simply isnt enough in nature, theyre too hard to access, or we cant get enough of them without hurting the environment. What we need are new tools and technology to overhaul our food process and approach, creating healthy ingredients from the endless diversity found in nature. How we can make a differenceOur mission at Elo is to make food healthier and more sustainable, using molecular farming. We identify desirable, hard-to-source ingredients from nature and produce them in other crops that can be grown in high volumes using existing infrastructure. These crops are known as biofactories, and they can efficiently produce large volumes of a rare natural ingredient that can be extracted and put in the market. These biofactories already have robust, efficient processes to create complex natural ingredients that far surpass the capabilities of man-made factories. If we can find and identify the ingredients we want to mass produce through research and modern technology, we can leave it to nature to provide. Our sweetener is a great example. Its inspired by monk fruit, which has been used in China for hundreds of years. Its prized by consumers and food and beverage companies alike for its incredibly sweet tasteand no calories. But monk fruit is expensive, can only be grown in remote valleys of China, and requires extensive labor to grow, harvest, and process before being shipped around the world.Using molecular farming, we reduce monk fruits cost and carbon footprint through local production, using plants as biofactories to only produce monk fruits sweetest molecules in easier-to-grow crops like watermelons and sugar beets.By producing our sweetener as a co-product in existing crop systems, we dont require additional land and other resources. Given that 72% of consumers are looking to limit or avoid sugar, were also meeting people where they are with this new sweetener.Thinking outside the boxIts this kind of new, disruptive thinking needed to improve our antiquated food system. And were not alone. Food science and technology innovators globally are developing inventive ways to create all new, healthier foundations for the foods we know and love. The challenge is to use these technologies so that everyone can benefitnot just those who can afford it.While our food system needs repair, Im confident that the solutions to these challenges lie in using natures own processes to optimize the resources we already haveand multiply their power to create healthful new paths forward. In the years ahead, I cant wait to walk into a kiosk along a dusty, foreign road and realize how much I crave what they have to offer: tasty, healthy, nutrition-rich foods.Todd Rands is CEO of ELO Life Systems.
