• Nintendo finally unveils the Switch 2, its successor to the Nintendo Switch

Bryant Francis, Senior EditorJanuary 16, 20253 Min ReadImage via NintendoAt a GlanceNintendo has finally unveiled the Switch 2, its follow-up to the massively popular Nintendo Switch. It seems the strikingly familiar console will release at some point in 2025.The wait is over. Nintendo has finally pulled back the veil on the Switch 2, its successor to the immensely popular Nintendo Switch. It's currently unclear how much the console will cost, although Nintendo indicated it will hit shelves at some point in 2025.Developers not privy to Nintendo's plans have been waiting on pins and needles for details of what new hardware features its next console might sport. Since the Nintendo Wii, the company has prioritized unique technology like motion sensor controls, second-screens, and portability over graphical and computing power. This time around? Well, it looks like we'll be getting more of the samebut better. In a brief announcement video (embedded below), Nintendo showed a device that looks like a larger version of the Switch with a few added bells and whistles. The Japanese company didn't share concrete tech specs, but we can see the Switch 2 features redesigned Joy-Con controllers that click onto the side of the console (rather than slide), a new-look kickstand and dock, a larger display, and additional ports.Nintendo confirmed the Switch 2 will be backwards compatible with some Switch titles, but noted certain games "may not be supported or fully compatible with Nintendo Switch 2."Software announcements were also missing from today's reveal, although we did see the Switch 2 running a mysterious version of Mario Kart in both docked and handheld mode. The company has promised to share more details about the console at a later date. A Switch 2 focused Nintendo Direct is currently slated for April 2, 2025.Speculation about the Nintendo Switch successor ran rampant over the last year, as developers, executives, and internet detectives with strong sleuthing skills tried to peel back how the company could top the surprise reveal of a portable console with detachable controllers in 2016. Today's reveal allows developers and publishers previously unfamiliar with Nintendo's plans to begin imagining what Nintendo has in store as it prepares to kick-start its next hardware cycle. When the Nintendo Switch launched in 2017, its primary competition was the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 line of consoles. Xbox Game Pass and Xbox Cloud Gaming hadn't hit the market yet, and the promise of a console that could work equally well in living rooms and out on the go seemed like a big gamble. Now, portability is on every manufacturer's mind, with Valve's Steam Deck, Sony's PlayStation Portal, and a slew of other handheld computers hitting the market. None of these devices held a candle to the Nintendo Switch's eye-popping sales numbers (Nintendo projects the console will hit 154.8 million units sold by April 2025), but their existence does challenge the house of Mario to stretch beyond the selling point of portability.Of course this is the company that gave us the Nintendo Ring-Con, Nintendo Labo, and Nintendo Sound Clock Alarmo. Even when it's not debuting new consoles, the company is regularly testing and launching new approaches to physical hardware.Hopes are riding high for the Switch 2 on multiple fronts. Investors are eagerly wagging their tails at the returns new hardware could deliver for Nintendo, and developers everywhere are hoping a fresh Nintendo consoleand hopefully the anticipated release of Grand Theft Auto VI on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S later in the yearcan shock some life into the video game industry and offer more financial stability after two years of layoffs and studio closures.Read more about:Top Stories[Company] NintendoAbout the AuthorBryant FrancisSenior Editor, GameDeveloper.comBryant Francis is a writer, journalist, and narrative designer based in Boston, MA. • Leicas $5,300 SL3-S is its latest hybrid camera for stills and video
    www.theverge.com
Leica has a new camera for pros who shoot both video and stills. The $5,295 Leica SL3-S, which launches today, is a full-frame mirrorless hybrid camera optimized for fast-action stills and 6K video. Like the SL3 its based on, the SL3-S has a compact body and 3.2-inch tilting touchscreen display. But where the SL3 with its 60mp sensor is mainly for still photography, the SL3-S is optimized for speed: its 24mp sensor can shoot video at 6K with 12-bit raw footage, and it can capture stills at up to 30fps with continuously tracking autofocus. The new Leica SL duo: the Leica SL3 (left) and SL3-S (right). Image: Leica CameraThe SL3-Ss newfound video chops mean it supports open-gate 6K (5952 x 3968 resolution) recording of its full 3:2 sensor at up to 30fps, or up to 60fps in 4K, and it can record directly to an SSD via USB-C connection. While it doesnt have an especially high-resolution sensor for stills, it makes up for that with speed and focusing ability. The SL3-S has 779 phase-detect autofocus points, more than double the SL3s 315 points. It also has improved object detection and tracking focus, and it shoots fast enough to enable 48- and 96-megapixel high-res multi-shot composites without a tripod. Otherwise, the SL3-S shares a lot with the SL3 utilizing the same body design with dual card slots (one UHS-II SD and one CFExpress Type B), tilting touchscreen, color-coded menu system (red for photo / yellow for video), and that quirky light-up power button. (Seriously, why is the power button not a nice physical switch like every other camera?) Its a similar approach to the one Leica took with its last-generation SL2 and SL2-S, with the SL3-S once again looking identical to its pricier counterpart, aside from some blacked-out Leica lettering.1/7 Image: Leica Camera1/7 Image: Leica CameraThe SL line is aimed at pros who need their fancy German camera to be more of an all-around workhorse, with high-res video recording and autofocus, instead of a slower-paced, specialized tool for photography like a Leica M rangefinder. So it makes sense that Leica is baking its Content Credentials into the SL3-S, utilizing Adobes Content Authenticity Initiative for image verification like it first did on the M11-P. Strangely, this feature isnt available in the standard SL3, which launched in March 2024, and wont be added via firmware upgrade. Leica spokesperson Nathan Kellum-Pathe told The Verge that the SL3 lacks the necessary hardware and that while software-based content authentication is possible, it does not meet Leicas standard for encryption of this important data.If you have Leica money, but not infinite Leica money, the SL3-S feels like the better value for all but the pickiest pixel peepers.

  • Why Hasnt Sony Done Anything More With Bloodborne? PlayStation Legend Shuhei Yoshida Has a Personal Theory
    www.ign.com
It is one of the biggest conundrums in the video game industry: why hasnt Sony followed up Bloodborne with anything? A remaster (Sony loves a remaster)? A sequel? A next-gen update? Fans of FromSoftwares PlayStation 4 masterpiece have begged for more ever since the game launched to critical and commercial acclaim a decade ago. So, what gives?Fresh from the reveal of his first voice acting gig following his exit from Sony, PlayStation legend Shuhei Yoshida has delivered his Bloodborne no-show theory. And we must be clear up front: this is Yoshidas opinion, which in an interview with Kinda Funny Games he stressed is not inside information, or the reveal of the current deliberations within the bowels of Sony itself.Bloodborne has always been the most asked thing, Yoshida began. And people wonder why we havent really done anything, even an update or a remaster. Should be easy, right? The company is known for doing so many remasters, right, some people get frustrated.I have only my personal theory to that situation. I left first-party so I dont know whats going on, but my theory is, you know because I remember, you know, Miyazaki-san really, really loved Bloodborne, you know, what he created. So I think he is interested, but hes so successful and hes so busy, so he doesnt want, he cannot do himself, but he does not want anyone else to touch it. So thats my theory. And the PlayStation team respect his wish. So thats my guess, right? Theory. I am not revealing any secret information, to be clear.IGN's Twenty Questions - Guess the game!IGN's Twenty Questions - Guess the game!To start:...try asking a question that can be answered with a "Yes" or "No".000/250Lets unpack Shuheis comment here. Miyazaki-san is of course Hidetaka Miyazaki, the boss of FromSoftware. And yes, hes incredibly successful. Not only for the influential Dark Souls series, but, most recently, the mainstream hit Elden Ring, which propelled FromSoftware to new heights. So much so that its getting a multiplayer spin-off this year. And it seems obvious to say Miyazaki will be incredibly busy with multiple projects to direct and a company to run. After Bloodborne came out in 2015, Miyazaki directed Dark Souls 3, then 2019s Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice for Activision, then the aforementioned Elden Ring for Bandai Namco. What's next? Miyazaki has yet to say. What Shuhei is touching on here is a potential desire from Miyazaki to do something with Bloodborne, but he doesnt want anyone else to do it. And Sony, Shuhei suggests, respects that wish, despite owning the intellectual property. Certainly Miyazaki has earned that respect and the ability to pick and choose his projects. The upshot is Bloodborne remains dormant nearly 10 years after the first game came out. But is there hope? In interviews, Miyazaki often deflects questions about Bloodborne, pointing to the fact FromSoftware does not own the IP. But in February last year, Miyazaki at least admitted the game would benefit from a release on more modern hardware. As for Sony, some Bloodborne fans feel a tad trolled by PlayStation. For example, last month, Bloodborne fans freaked out over a potential announcement after Sony ended its special PlayStation 30th Anniversary trailer with a clip from the beloved FromSoftware game and the phrase "it's about persistence."Perhaps, given Shuheis theory, fans will need plenty of it.Wesley is the UK News Editor for IGN. www.elledecor.com
Calling all foodies: were poised for a year of tasty colorsthat is, according to Pinterest. The creative image-sharing social media platform has rolled out its 2025 Color Palette of the Yearand its making our mouths water. The lineup of colors poised to set the tone for whats next in design, beauty, fashion, and interiors, consists of five hues: Cherry Red, Butter Yellow, Aura Indigo, Dill Green, and Alpine Oat.Courtesy PinterestThe palette builds upon the 2025 Pinterest Predicts trends report, which, no surprise, named the cherry-themed aesthetic the look of the year, as well as one of its colors of the year. Gen Z and Millennials will infuse cherries into their makeup, menus and mood boards this year, the platform's in-house creative team concluded in the report. Pinterest's Cherry Red, is a rich, vibrant shade that blends the intensity of red with the warmth of brown. Its not tomato-girl red; Its not Matisse red; Its giving cherriesbut black cherries. Weve evolved. No doubt, this hue has been making the rounds on social media and permeating outfits and interiors, from designer Casey Kenyons latest project to every cherry-bedecked room idea weve seen on TikTok. Courtesy PinterestCourtesy PinterestButter Yellow and Aura Indigo, play into more trends that Pinterest has named in their trend report, which found that search terms purple blush makeup were up 30 percent this year, with aura effect up 35 percent. Both are vibrant and playful, especially together. Courtesy PinterestDill Green recalls a rising trend that certainly doesnt take itself too seriously: pickles. According to the trend report, searches for the term pickle margarita were up 100 percent, with pickle fries, pickle de gallo, pickle cake, and fried pickle dip also spiking. Tell your foodie friends: This year will be absolutely dill-icious, the report read. From sweet treats to tangy cocktails, the oh-so-humble pickle is about to be in absolutely everything. And with a hue like Dill Green, wed wager it will permeate our rooms, too. Courtesy PinterestAnd finally, Pinterest named Alpine Oat their finally color. The creamy, vanilla-toned greige is a classic tone that ties it all together, offering a quiet counterpoint to its bold, colorful color colleagues. While were clearly raring for a year of vibrancy and taking risks, its clear that a solid neutral will always have its place. • The Download: whats next for Neuralink, and Metas language translation AI
    www.technologyreview.com
This is today's edition ofThe Download, our weekday newsletter that provides a daily dose of what's going on in the world of technology. What to expect from Neuralink in 2025 In November, a young man named Noland Arbaugh announced hed be livestreaming from his home for three days straight. His broadcast was in some ways typical fare: a backyard tour, video games, meet mom. The difference is that Arbaugh, who is paralyzed, has thin electrode-studded wires installed in his brain, which he used to move a computer mouse on a screen, click menus, and play chess. The implant, called N1, was installed last year by neurosurgeons working with Neuralink, Elon Musks brain-interface company. Arbaughs livestream is an indicator that Neuralink is a whole lot closer to creating a plug-and-play experience that can restore peoples daily ability to roam the web and play games, giving them what the company has called digital freedom. But this is not yet a commercial product. The current studies are small-scalethey are true experiments, explorations of how the device works and how it can be improved. Read on for our analysis of what to expect from the company in 2025. Antonio Regalado Metas new AI model can translate speech from more than 100 languages Whats new: Meta has released a new AI model that can translate speech from 101 different languages. It represents a step toward real-time, simultaneous interpretation, where words are translated as soon as they come out of someones mouth. Why it matters: Typically, translation models for speech use a multistep approach which can be inefficient, and at each step, errors and mistranslations can creep in. But Metas new model, called SeamlessM4T, enables more direct translation from speech in one language to speech in another. Read the full story. Scott J Mulligan Interest in nuclear power is surging. Is it enough to build new reactors? Lately, the vibes have been good for nuclear power. Public support is building, and public and private funding have made the technology more economical in key markets. Theres also a swell of interest from major companies looking to power their data centers. These shifts have been great for existing nuclear plants. Were seeing efforts to boost their power output, extend the lifetime of old reactors, and even reopen facilities that have shut down. Thats good news for climate action, because nuclear power plants produce consistent electricity with very low greenhouse-gas emissions. I covered all these trends in my latest story, which digs into whats next for nuclear power in 2025 and beyond. But as I spoke with experts, one central question kept coming up for me: Will all of this be enough to actually get new reactors built?Casey Crownhart This article is from The Spark, MIT Technology Reviews weekly climate and energy newsletter. The big story How refrigeration ruined fresh food October 2024 Three-quarters of everything in the average American diet passes through the cold chainthe network of warehouses, shipping containers, trucks, display cases, and domestic fridges that keep meat, milk, and more chilled on the journey from farm to fork. As consumers, we put a lot of faith in terms like fresh and natural, but artificial refrigeration has created a blind spot. Weve gotten so good at preserving (and storing) food, that we know more about how to lengthen an apples life span than a humans, and most of us dont give that extraordinary process much thought at all. But all that convenience has come at the expense of diversity and deliciousness. Read the full story. • Batay-Csorba Architects creates "cathedral-like spaces" for low dark brick-clad residence in Toronto

Submitted by WA ContentsBatay-Csorba Architects creates "cathedral-like spaces" for low dark brick-clad residence in TorontoCanada Architecture News - Jan 16, 2025 - 13:05 html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40/loose.dtd"Toronto-based architecture and interior design studio Batay-Csorba Architects has built a residence that features "cathedral-like spaces" with its steep chapel pitch roof in Toronto, Canada.Named Westminster Residence, the residence is located on a corner property in Toronto's High Park district, surrounded by classic Edwardian gable houses. The goal of the Westminster residence is to provide a sense of continuity and familiarity within the typical roof form. The proposal investigates the idea of spatially occupying the underside of the roof, similar to an attic, while concealed behind a steep terracotta roof. The enormous gable roof, which is interrupted by top-lit skylights, creates cathedral-like chambers that volumetrically open to the bottom of the steep chapel roof pitch, counterbalancing the small footprint.Under the heavy cantilevered roof on the main level, a huge, floating covered porch extends to a private garden in the corner lot's side yard.Behind a 20-foot-tall brise soleil that protects a private balcony and creates the illusion of a courtyard within the city lot, the main bedroom upstairs enlarges into a tall roof dormer with a view of the garden below. The straightforward project shape consists of tall rectilinear dormers, a massive triangular stone-clad roof, a low dark brick-clad volume, and three dark monolithic figures. The covered garage and side patio are cantilevered by the heavy roof, which floats asymmetrically on top of the first floor, creating an unnerving dynamic between the straightforward volumes. The project's dormers, which are similar in size and materiality, adopt very different positions. One grounding the west faade where it meets the ground, while the other dormer mysteriously cantilevers and hovers over the carport.A literal union of partner goals, the material atmosphere is a combination of the villain's lair and a light-filled haven. Concrete, hefty unfilled travertine, dark-stained plain sawn walnut, and dark-textured lime wash walls make up the restricted palette. These elements stand in stark contrast to the double-height, light-filled soft lime wash walls, the wide plank knotted white oak floors, and the soft linen draperies and furnishings. As one goes about the house, the process of transitioning from a compressed cavernous spatial perception to its opposite is described.A floating " steel projection that serves as a threshold and semi-private enclosure punctuates the building's main entrance. The dark, cramped internal entry and circulation conditions are extended by this private area on the outside of the house. From heavy, rough, and textured terracotta roof shingles to hand-pressed brick in a delicate variety of coursing details seen throughout the neighboring context, vertical hand-brushed wood siding and screening, thin powder-coated aluminum projections, raw galvanized steel, and a combination of rough and smooth cast-in-place concrete, the exterior palette incorporates natural materials that will gradually patina and blend in with the low maintenance spreading sedum landscape.A quiet, south-facing outdoor area separates the recreation room from the sunken basement courtyard, which is surrounded by retaining walls and entry steps made of concrete pavers with a dark palette of textures cast in place.A continuous galvanized linear slot drain connects the side yard's acid-etched concrete patio to the structure, which is designed to float above the undulating landscape.Site planFloor planFloor planFloor planSectionSectionAxonometric drawingThe architecture and interior design firm Batay-Csorba Architects (B-CA) creates forward-thinking projects by fusing practice and research.Dedicated to using architecture as a platform for the expression of ideas, they transform buildings into aspirational shapes and experiences through the use of tactile materials, natural light, and spatial massing.Project factsProject name:Westminster ResidenceArchitects and Interior Design:Batay-Csorba ArchitectsCompletion date:July, 2024Site size:08 acres or 3,490sfTotal construction cost:withheldClient/Owner:withheldProject team: Jodi Batay-Csorba and Andrew Batay-Csorba, principals; Sacha Milojevic, Jacob Henriquez, Myles Bury, design teamEngineers: [Structural: Contact Structural Engineering Inc]Consultants:Mechanical: Elite HVAC DesignsLandscape: Gravenor Landscape DesignArborist: Davey Resource GroupGeneral contractor:Whitaker ConstructionAll images Doublespace Photography. All drawings Batay-Csorba Architects.> via Batay-Csorba Architects
