  • Nintendo Switch 2 reveal ditched showing players in silly scenarios
    www.polygon.com
Nintendo finally released a first look at the highly-anticipated Nintendo Switch 2 on Thursday. The brief trailer zoomed in on the hardware design (literally) in a sleek animated video and gave us a look at new features of the console like a mysterious C-button and its new snap-in Joy-Con controllers. But unlike the trailer that announced the original Nintendo Switch, this trailer lacked footage of actual humans playing the games and ditched the goofy scenarios showing people using the console. Nintendo released the first trailer for the Nintendo Switch in 2016. The roughly three-and-a-half-minute-long video focused largely on people playing the console in different scenarios in the real world. Although the trailer likely aimed to showcase the flexibility and adaptability of a console with both handheld and TV connectivity capabilities, it ended up showing some pretty goofy and seemingly unlikely scenarios where people could play the Nintendo Switch. At one point two women bust out a Switch at a rooftop party in the fading daylight of early evening to play a game as a crowd of people holding red plastic cups huddles around to watch. In another moment, a person plays a Switch in the park as he walks his dog.Nintendo has shared very little about the Switch 2 and has left experts to speculate on important questions regarding its price point and internal hardware specs. But out of all the important questions that currently linger, Im focused on burning ones like: Would an outdoor rooftop party be a suitable setting for my Switch 2? and Would my dog be OK if I brought my Switch 2 to play along for a walk? Questions like these seem silly, and they are a little bit, but theyre also not. Showing the console being used is a clear way to demonstrate its main features and show how the creators imagine people will use a console. Sure, the idea that someone would play the original Switch in a loud outdoor setting might have seemed silly at the time, but it at least underscored its portability and show how the individual Joy-Con controllers would work when shared. If we saw people play the Switch 2, we could get key insight on lingering ambiguities, like whether or not its Joy-Con will have the functionality of a computer mouse, and just how big the console will be.So while the scenarios seemed a bit off at the time, I was finding myself missing all those weirdos who play Nintendo Switch on the rooftop as I watched the Switch 2s big reveal.

  • How Scary Hour Helps Me Stay on Top of My Finances
    lifehacker.com
We may earn a commission from links on this page.We all have those money tasks that make our stomachs churn. You know the oneschecking your credit card balance after a spendy month, finally opening that medical bill, or diving into your retirement account settings. Enter "Scary Hour," a trending productivity technique that's helping me transform financial anxiety into actionable progress. What is Scary Hour? The concept is beautifully simple: set aside one hour to tackle tasks you've been avoiding due to anxiety or fear. While the term is trending on TikTok (RIP), it's a fresh spin on established time-blocking techniques. But there's something powerful about naming this dedicated time for facing our fearsit acknowledges that these tasks are indeed scary, and that's okay.My financial Scary Hour approachI started implementing this Scary Hour for my finances after realizing I had a growing pile of "I'll deal with that later" money tasks. Hey, there's nothing like writing about personal finance all day to make you procrastinate your own personal finances. Here's how I structure my financial Scary Hour:I schedule it for Tuesday mornings, when my energy is high and my mind is already in productivity mode from starting the work weekMy phone goes on Do Not DisturbI make my favorite ginger tea (a small reward helps!)I keep a physical notepad handy for action itemsI set a timer for exactly 60 minutesWhat I actually do during Scary HourIn my first session, I tackled the immediate anxiety-inducing tasks:Reviewed all account balancesCategorized last month's "miscellaneous" purchasesCalled about an incorrect charge I'd been avoiding (I had accidentally overpaid my credit card and created a negative balance)Finally calculated my true monthly restaurant spending (ouch!)You can work on your deeper financial planning, too:Reviewing and adjusting investment allocationsComparing insurance quotesReading through employee benefits documentationCreating debt payoff scenariosAnalyzing spending patterns in traditionally "scary" categoriesWhy this productivity hack worksThe beauty of Scary Hour lies in its constraints. Knowing I only have to face these tasks for 60 minutes makes them feel manageable. Plus, the timer creates a sense of urgency that helps overcome analysis paralysisa common obstacle I know I face in all things financial decision-making.Most importantly, this approach creates a dedicated space for financial self-care. Not only do you get to reduce anxiety by making scary tasks routine, but you can actually turn scary tasks into small wins. If you're looking to transform vague money worries into concrete actions, this is the hack for you.Tips for your own financial Scary HourBegin with quick wins like unsubscribing from tempting retail emails, making that one phone call you've been avoiding, checking the balance on a neglected account, or filing away important financial documents. From these bite-sized action items, you can build yourself a little momentum. As you get comfortable, tackle bigger tasks, like creating a new budget, consolidating debt, or maybe even researching estate planning.Make this habit sustainable by keeping a running list of tasks for future scary hours. Celebrate your progress, no matter how small, and be easy on yourself if you miss a week. After all, I find the real magic happens outside of Scary Hour. By regularly facing financial fears in a controlled setting, you'll likely find that money matters become less scary overall. I've noticed myself making quicker financial decisions, feeling more confident in money conversations, and experiencing less anxiety about day-to-day money management. The bottom lineMoney doesn't have to be scary all the time. By dedicating just one hour a week to facing financial fears, you can transform anxiety into action. Remember, the goal isn't to eliminate financial stress completelyit's to build the confidence to handle it effectively.Start your own financial Scary Hour this week. Your future self will thank you for facing those fears, one hour at a time.

    www.engadget.com
Pre-orders are now open for four new PlayStation 5 accessories in a new colorway: Midnight Black. That's better than other types of black because it stays up past bedtime. The collection includes the DualSense Edge wireless controller, the Portal remote player and the Pulse Explore wireless earbuds each going for $200 and the Pulse Elite wireless headset, which is selling for $150. All four are expected to ship February 20.Sony announced the collection earlier this month and the new accessories join the already-available Midnight Black standard Dual Sense controller ($75) and PS5 console cover ($55). Like PlayStation's 30th Anniversary collection, the Midnight Black accessories let you add a bit of personalized flair to your gaming setup, but these are far more sleek and brooding. If previous PlayStation releases are any indicator, there's a chance these new accessories will sell out before everyone gets one, so if Midnight Black feels as sexy to you as the video makes it look, you might want to start adding things to your cart.Pre-order the DualSense Edge wireless controller for $200: Compared to the standard DualSense controller, the Edge model gives you a few more features and options for customization. Buttons below the sticks change button assignments while switches adjust the triggers' pull length. It comes with two sets of rear paddles as well as extra joysticks, all magnetically swappable. A matching case is also included. Also direct from PlayStation.Pre-order the Portal remote player for $200: The Portal remote player got a lukewarm assessment from us back in 2023, but we started to come around once Sony started cloud gaming. The gateway has an 8-inch LCD screen (1080p at 60fps), haptic feedback and connects to your PS5 over Wi-Fi.Pre-order the Pulse Explore wireless earbuds for $200: The earbuds connect both via Bluetooth and Sony's own PlayStation Link tech, that promises ultra-low latency connection to a PS5, PC, Mac and the Portal remote player. AI-powered noise rejection technology will make sure your banter is heard clearly. A Midnight Black charging case is included. Also direct from PlayStation.Pre-order the Pulse Elite wireless headset $150: The Elite headset comes with a headset charging stand so you can show off your new accessory properly, while making sure it's ready for next time (and yes, the stand is the same late-night hue). • Why we need to unleash a regenerative revolution
    www.fastcompany.com
Today, the worlds population is growing and urbanizing. Almost 70% of people worldwide will live in cities by 2050, which lies at the heart of our transition to a sustainable, circular, and resilient future. We need to ensure that we design and build cities in a regenerative way for those who live in them. This demands a revolution, with spaces designed to improve living standards, make cities more resilient, and serve society. Taking this approach is about making buildings low-carbon, circular, resilient, and energy-efficient, while bringing nature into cities, and putting people at the core of the built environment.Holcim recently co-presented a report with Systemiq, a systems change company, to explore how we can unleash this revolution. Together, we set out the case for change, and how we can work together across the construction sector to make this the new normal. What is a regenerative city? The built environmenthuman-made space where people live, work, and playis massive and growing fast. It accounts for $10.8 trillion (12% of global GDP) and employs 240 million people all over the world. We will invest trillions more into the built environment over the next 10-15 years. This is an unparalleled opportunity for the construction sector, but it carries with it a responsibility to take a regenerative approach and make the most of this urbanization boom by investing in projects that use this model purposefully.Designing regenerative cities means looking at how we can reduce their CO2 footprint at the design phase, as well as how we can factor in ways to create more value for society.Gradually, an increasing number of designers, architects, governments, and changemakers are switching gears to take this approach, to create value for all stakeholders. Beyond minimizing environmental impact and reaching net zero, its about having a net-positive outcome for both people and the planet.4 key characteristicsWhile researching this report, Systemiq found that truly regenerative designs have four key characteristics. They evolve over TIME. Regenerative spaces are designed to be resilient and adapt to changing economic, social and environmental conditions.Crucially, they center on the PEOPLE who will use them from the earliest planning stages. They prioritize local populations and promote their well-being.They are also integrated with NATURE. Designed as living systems, they restore the connections between people and their surrounding natural environment. Finally, regenerative spaces are deeply rooted in PLACE. At every level, they are informed by the history, ecology, and culture around them.Systemiqs report proposes steps we can take together to fuel this revolution. First, we can form a coalition of innovators who will collaborate to drive us forward. Second, leveraging new technologies, we can create open-source planning resources to pool insights from projects all over the globe. Third, we can attract investors by designating projects as a target asset class. The key to all of this lies in collaborationtogether we can scale up the regenerative revolution!New Yorks Big UThis approach is already taking shape in cities worldwide. One example is New York, where the Big U project is setting the standard for regenerative building. This is just one of many such projects globally using Holcims sustainable building solutions.Coastal cities bear the brunt of our rapidly changing climate, with challenges like flooding expected to worsen in the years to come. Urban spaces must therefore be resilient, capable of absorbing shocks, and continuing to function and generate value. In 2012, Lower Manhattan was hit by Hurricane Sandy, which damaged offices, infrastructure, and housing for vulnerable residents, also eroding coastlines. Preparing New York for another event like Sandy became a pressing need.In response, a group of architects, environmental groups, and policy experts created the Big U. The 10-mile protective ribbon encircles Manhattans southern tip. Holcims coastal protection materials enabled high outer structural strength from the surrounding Hudson and East River. The innovative project is nature-based. Listening to the needs of the local community, it incorporates outdoor spaces such as parks and basketball courts. It reconnects residents in three neighborhoods with the natural ecosystem around them. The Big U is a perfect illustration of a regenerative built environment. It is people-centric, rooted in place, and integrated with nature. It also changes with time, as it was designed to withstand rising water levels until 2100. The project has improved the health and well-being of those living in Lower Manhattan and increased the entire citys resilience. It improves access to housing, jobs, and education, and boosts New Yorks economic growth potential.Transforming the built environment togetherThe Big U is just one example found in Systemiqs report. Local and national governments have begun supporting regenerative projects that directly fulfil their citizens needs. We also see innovation taking place along the construction value chain, as experts put their heads together to promote circularity. Furthermore, emerging financial models increasingly promote and sustain regenerative workflows. This is such an exciting time for the building industry. Our future lies in projects that have positive outcomes for communities and nature like the Big U, which are tailored to the needs of their cities and environments.Regenerative systems by design create prosperity, but they do so in a way thats also good for nature and good for people. Not just some people, but all people. At Holcim, we are leading this shift in construction. Everything we build, we build for people. We urge owners and developers, designers, contractors, and operators in cities all over the world to explore solutions that will make their projects future-proof and positive for people and the planet.Join us as we unleash the regenerative revolution!Nollaig Forrest is chief sustainability officer at Holcim.

  • An Impressive Sky Pool Links Two Dubai Towers, Creating A Distinctive Project In The Skyscraper City
    www.yankodesign.com
Foster + Partners recently designed a pair of attractive and eye-catching towers connected by an exclusive penthouse swimming pool at the top. This makes these towers truly exceptional and one-of-a-kind. Called Regent Residences Dubai, Sankari Place, the two skyscrapers will be built in Business Bay, near the upcoming Bugatti Residences. They will feature an equal height of 590 feet. The towers design is animated by the addition of protruding balconies and pools, which Foster + Partners envisions as creating a visual effect reminiscent of cascading water. The orientation of the buildings is strategically planned to offer optimal views of the Burj Khalifa, the current tallest building in the world. However, the Burj Khalifa may soon lose its title, as the even taller JEC Tower is currently under construction in Saudi Arabia.Designer: Foster + PartnersThe skyscrapers will accommodate one large and spacious residence on each floor. The uppermost level will include an ultra penthouse suite that will generously spread over the two towers. This suite will be linked by the impressive sky pool. The pool will not be exposed to the elements, it will be protected by a bridge-like structure. Since Dubai has a pretty harsh climate, this enclosed plan is for the best. The unique pool is the star element of the project, showcasing something that we dont typically see. Dubai is known for its majestic skyscrapers and towers, but the addition of this sky swimming pool truly allows this project to stand apart from the crowd. The lower floors of the development will be a hub of luxury and leisure, featuring lush greenery and tranquil water features that create an inviting atmosphere. Residents and guests will have access to private dining spaces, offering exclusive culinary experiences, as well as a state-of-the-art gym for fitness enthusiasts. Multiple swimming pools will provide ample opportunities for relaxation and recreation. Retail units will be integrated into this section, creating a vibrant shopping experience. The Regent Residences Dubai, Sankari Place, is a prestigious and luxurious project being developed by Sankari Properties in collaboration with IHG Hotels & Resorts. Specific details regarding the completion date and pricing of the residences have yet to be announced, but it is quite evident that the homes are targetted towards the high-end market. They arent designed to be budget-friendly starter homes, but are premium and sophisticated living spaces for buyers seeking elegance and exclusivity. The post An Impressive Sky Pool Links Two Dubai Towers, Creating A Distinctive Project In The Skyscraper City first appeared on Yanko Design.
